Super Genius

Out fishing for Dhues today. Normally like to use wrasse fillets, but i havent been out since before the ban so didnt have any of my own bait. Bought some mullet & octopus & had a piece of each on my rig. Drifting around for an hour with no decent bites so i thought to myself "If its not working, change something" Put out a small outfit & caught a little western king wrasse. Perfect I thought "live bait - that should kick things along" Put the top hook through the lip of the wrasse & sent it down. Bang - straight away a good fish. "Super genius" I thought to myself. Feels like an undersize Dhuie but never mind, the plan worked. Bring the fish up & yep its an undersize Dhuie. Wrasse still happily swimming along - The Dhuie had taken the skungy bit of mullet that was left on the bottom hook. Thats fishing for you - you never quite work it all out.

Preston Beach Low Life's

Was to take the kids crabbing today but some low life nicked my esky with 6 bags of tuna heads out of my dinghy parked in front of our shack at Preston bet u they thought it was full of beer. Also took a carnarvon crate exchange crate and a bag full of tackle. Luckily I took my daughters Xmas present ( new rod) up to the house.

apparently they also stole a two man kayak off a car at footprints and a some fishing rods from other cars in the area. One way to ruin Christmas Day!

Bunbury Australia Day

Hey guys, anyone know if the water in front of the powerboat club and around the parade is open on Australia Day evening or do they shut it for the fireworks? Would be nice to watch from the water this year

Hi all,

I'm just looking around at possibly getting a second hand go pro for diving. Most of my diving is around that 15-20meter area and I'm looking for something simple as Im no pro editor or anything.

hey guys I was putting off upgrading my boat for a while but my neighbour has decided to sell his. It's a 2009 540 freestyle trailcraft with a 90hp 4stroke Honda 67 hours. He has had the boat from new and comes with ski gear all safety gear. Does come with a sounder but is average and will be replacing with mine if I decide to buy it, also comes with a full travel cover... He wants 30k and is in showroom condition. What's your thoughts?

another crayfish reg conundrem

possession limits are 24 per person

does that mean 24 per licensed person (which would mean only licensed people could be in possesion of crays caught recreationally) or 24 per person in a household

or if i give some to a friend 24 per   both households or i could catch 8 a day and give batches of 24 to friends now if i have these  friends or family living with me does that mean each person can own 24 crays?

this is the only reg i could find

Subject to regulation 16E(3A)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv), (3B)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv) and (3C)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv), for the purposes of section 51(1) of the Act, the maximum quantity of rock lobster that a person may be in possession of is 24 rock lobsters.

my head hurts

Missing Cray pots

 Ladies and Gentlemen

I am an avid cray diver and sometime cray potter.

Now, whilst I sympathise for those who have lost pots due to nefarius never do wells, I have come to the following conclusions to explain why pots go sometimes AWOL

1. Not enough weight. Simple, a strong swell, current or wind moves the pot. It may become tangled with reef and the owner assumes they are poached.

2. The float was not marked, so I have heard recently that Fisheries will impound such a pot. Did you mark your float (as required)? Did you mark your pot with your gear ID (good advice to do this)?

3. A boat has inadvertently run over you float or the rope. This occurs due to:

              a. Inattention on behalf of the skipper

              b. Too much rope on the surface

              c. It is night time and the floats are hard to see

              d. Your pot was in a shipping channel. Maybe not the best location.

              e. Your knots and equipment were not adequate for the rigours of life at sea

4.  Lastly many of my mates have lost pots, been poached or had a gutful and given up. Rather than staying silent, REPORT it and if enough people complain, maybe something will be done about it.

Sincerely

Willy

Runaway Craypot

Interesting dilemma.

Pulled our craypots out on Sunday after an awesome season.

Got to one of mine and thought, jeez, someone set theirs awful close to mine....in fact I thought I'd have trouble being able to put it without running over his rope. There was probably 25 metres on the surface.  Anyway, lets run up on it and see what's going on.

Turns out there was a brand new plastic pot floating and tangled in my pot, with all the rope floating on the surface.

First dilemma....had to pull this dudes pot first and untangle it.  Technically illegal.  Once done, we could see it had no weight at all...still baited!.  Then thought, I'm not bringing this back in as the 7th pot on board....asking for trouble.  Fisheries were at the ramp (Ocean Reef) as we left.  Motored away from the rest of our pots and chucked it overboard.  Second dilemma, as you can imagine, all that did was put a floating pot with two floats and 25 metres or so of rope on the surface, ready to catch the next unsuspecting boat propellor.  I couldn't do it...I said stuff Fisheries, I need to bring this in as it's a navigation hazard, and I'll give it to Fisheries to contact the owner.

Anyway, got back in and Fisheries had gone, so I just left it near the launch ramps.

What would you have done?

Family fishing

I took my family for a day trip over to GI recently. My daughter and I got into some squid, she loves it. Then landed a 49cm bluespot first cast at my 'secret' location, flicking lures along the beach.

Cape Nat Tuna Advice

I'll be fishing out from the cape for a few weeks after Christmas and looking to find Tuna (Yellowfin specifically). Does anyone have any advice on where you're more likely to find them and the best methods for targetting them? (Beyond the obvious look for bait schools and birds etc, etc..)

I've trolled up stripey's and SBT's around Rocky point before but for now i'm really mainly interested in targetting yellowfin.

Any helpful hints much appreciated.

Cheers!

Trailer Suspension Repairs

Having noted a broken leaf spring on both sides of my trailer I spoke and got a recommendation from Trailer Parts to take it to Fremantle Trailers.

Was pretty concerned that, at this time of the year, I had little chance of getting it done before Christmas and wouldn't risk towing it far loaded with a 6.8 as the remaining springs looked crappy and wouldn't put other people on the road at risk by driving it in that condition.

Well I am glad to report amazing service from Fremantle trailers despite this busy time of the year, they also discovered a spun bearing rendering one axle unserviceable and rather than mess around given the age of the trailer I asked that they replace both and am more than satisfied with the work, trailer looks like new and all done super fast enabling me to use it over the Chrissy break.

Nice to actually receive top service at this time of year - thanks Paul and the team

Kalbarri after Xmas

Hi all, just wondering if the use of a throw net is allowed in Kalbarri and surrounds ?
