Exmouth, Ideal Months & Prefered Charters

 Hey Guys,

I'm looking at organising a holiday to exmouth and would like to get everyones advice on the best time of year for reef fishing and best charter options.

I'm very much into soft plastics - who would be best to accommodate this? Also don't mind trolling for pelagics.

Is there better time of year for weather?

Who are the guys charter guys that consistently put you on the fish?

What length of charter ie 2-7 days do you recommend? What is ball park cost of your suggestions.

What boats are the most liveable for the other half as I may have to take the anchor with me.

Accommodation suggestions for the mainland would also be helpful.

Are there many good land based spots to go to while not on the boat?

Thanks

 BS.

Fishing a Berley Trail

Hey all,

I'm very new to boat fishing, and after some advice after going out in Cockburn sound last week and not catching a thing.

What is the technique for fishing a berley trail?  In my head I have it pictured that i'd have to use about 5 litres of berley, and drop out a scoop every 20 metres or so of drifting, and then re drift that area over again to take advantage of the berley..

is this correct and can anyone offer any advice for this?

Is there a different berley technique you would use for king george etc, as oppsoed to snapper/dhueys?

Fishing this weekend

Based on the weather, which do you guys reckon  is better, boat fishing late Saturday arvo/evening or Sunday morning?

land based king george whiting spots

Looking on line some of the pictures of the houses up there there is no where I could park the boat attached to the car all the time.

Fishing today

Great day today boated 11 dhuies, 2 pinks, and 2 blackass, if only every day was like today!

list of do's and don'ts... please add your wisdom

 Hi all,

Probably already been done but was thinking it would be good to have at least one must do or don't from each of us.

Landbased and boat.

I'll get the ball rolling;:

#1 - Never leave home without the SKIPPER putting in all bungs!

(I stipulate it must be the skippers job to avoid major marital, family or  friend rifts when you launch and skipper starts screaming at nominated deckie...  ive been on both ends:-)

Who's next......????

100 Fathom Fishing Club - 2014 Deep Drop Tournament

Since moving to Louisiana I've experienced some mind blowing fishing and got involved with the 100 Fathom Fishing Club. Our annual tournament kicks off next week in Alabama and I will be throwing reports and pics up on the site (piscatus.net). Thought I'd share with you the updates / reports as we get underway.... if the pics dont give me too much hassles I'll post them here too. Enjoi!

100 Fathom Fishing Club’s Deep Drop Fishing Tournament Almost Underway

2014 Sees the 100 Fathom Fishing Club (100FFC) take the annual deep drop tournament to the deep blue yonder off Gulf Shores, Alabama. The tourney runs from June 11 > 14 and is shaping up to be bigger and badder than the 2013 event (held in Venice) with more boats, more anglers and more sponsors on board than ever before.

The tournament is a great place to meet others with the dreaded deep water addiction and is open to all 100FFC club members. The tournament entry fee is $25 per angler which is a small price to pay considering the work behind it and prizes on offer. Even better, the tournament also pairs up offshore boat challenged folk with skippers ensuring that even folks like me can get in on the deep drop action.

All entrants receive impressive captains bags with boat owners getting a little something extra for their support. Major prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish in each of the 8 following categories

  • Snapper - Mangrove and Red
  • Grouper - Snowie, Yelleredge, Scamp, Other *Warsaw & Jewfish ineligible
  • Tilefish - Golden, Blueline, Sand
  • Freakfish - Bearded Brotula, Barrelfish, Wreckfish, Wahoo, Dolphin, Tuna, etc *Reef Donkeys ineligible
  • Swordfish - Heaviest Sword wins it
  • Warsaw - Heaviest Warsaw wins it
  • 1st Place Boat - heaviest crew aggregate from among the combined Tile, Grouper, Snapper, Freak divisions
  • 1st Place Angler - heaviest angler aggregate from among the combined Tile, Grouper, Snapper, Freak divisions

While plenty of fun will be had, there is a serious side to the event with both monetary and protein donations being pledged to charity. The club has selected the Salvation Army Homeless Shelters and the Recreational Fishing Alliance as beneficiaries for this years tournament.

The sponsor list (see below) is truly staggering this year! Kudos to all the companies who have shown their support, many for a second year in a row. I don’t need to tell you how important the sponsors are to these events and competing or not we need to return the favor whenever possible. I will post updates and pics as the tournament gets underway, stay tuned!

2014 Deep Drop Tournament Sponsor Hall of Fame

Stay tuned for updates! Captains meeting is Tuesday night with fishing starting next Wednesday...

Cheers

2013 Stella vs 2010 Saltiga

Been done to death I know, but lets do it again! Im currently trying to decide on a spin reel for PE3. Will be going on a 'versatile' 6-6ft4 rod and be used for metal/placcy demersal and sambo jigging, trolling, livebaitin and the occasional lure cast if needed. I cant decide between the current Stella SW 5000/6000 or the Saltiga 4000. Would like to hear from who have, or have had both of these reels and please, no references to Alan Hawk!

Dirk Hartog Island

Looking at heading up there end of July, will be launching a boat from Denham,
Anyone no if you can still camp in Turtle Bay on the northern end?
Or are you restricted to the designated camping areas on the island.

Also what is the ramp like at Denham for leaving a vehicle there for a few days, is there a lock up somewhere, heard that sea rescue can lock a vehicle up in the lockup for a donation.

Anyone else heading up around that time

Epirb for jet ski

Need to get a EPIRB for my ski, just  to sure on the best type and where to get one at a good price.

First Cockburn Sound Pink

Having bought my first boat (Quintrex Bayhunter Caprice) during the summer, I was stoked to finally see the first decent fish on board on the weekend.

Struggling to find many chances to get on the water due to golf and football commitments on most weekends (priorities are wrong) I thought that monday of the long weekend was a good chance to get out on the water for our first try in the sound with a mate on board with me.

Having absolutely no idea where to look for fish i figured our best chance was to bite the bullet and get on the water nice and early before the sun came up as i had read that this was generally when snapper were most active.

We were the second boat in the water at point perron ramp at around 5:15am and in the sound not long after.

Not knowing where to head, i had read that Sulphur Bay could produce snapper so we decided to head there. The first time on the water at night was a new experience!

Not having looked at the charts before we left we realised once at Sulphur Bay that there were Navy waters that we shouldnt enter so we stayed just to the south of the boundary.

We anchored at first around 10 metres of water and burleyed up but just kept catching butter fish . I wassurprised at the size of hook they managed to take. After 20 minutes of catching these we got fed up and decided to pull up anchor and drift in from 12m of water to 6m of water. First couple of drifts kept producing butter fish and i was dissapointed knowing that i could have still been in bed.

The sun was now coming up and we decided to head a couple of hundred metres further south of the navy boundary and have another drift. First drift and the bait sat on the bottom for a minute without feeling any pesky little bites from butter fish which was a good sign. All of a sudden my reel started buzzing and i was on to something decent. I dont think i had the drag set tight enough to set the hook in the fishes mouth on my size 4000 reel and the fish spat the hook after the first run. Very dissapointed that i didnt get to see what was on the other end i spat the dummy only for my mate to hook up straight away. He was fishing much heavier gear than me and after a few minute fight he had the fish at the boat! a nice 66cm Pink in around 9m of water. As we were high fiving each other after thinking we were going to have no success, my other rod that was floating a mulie out the back got hit and before i could pick up the rod the hook was busted off probably due to a poor knot.

After a couple more drifts accross the same area with no luck, we quickly drifted over the weed beds picked up a few squid all be it quiet small ones compared to some that i had picked up around port kennedy and headed back to the ramp.

Very happy to finally have a decent fish on the boat even if i didnt catch it!

busso salmon!!!!

hi guys, this weekend i went to busso jetty for a fish and i put a live herring down on the 300lb handline hoping for a sambo and caught this nice salmon as a by catch. i also lost a moster salmon as it busted me off on my 30lb outfit. the salmon wieghed 4.5kg and 75cm. i will put some more pics up soon.

new beach rod

G'day guys,

well my old faithful penn beach rod has finely kicked the bucket after about 10 years of abuse. done really well the old girl. mostly used for salmon and tailor rated 6-10kg.

I have been doing some research and I cant really find much info on the Wilson champion trophy surf rods. I picked one up in a shop a long time ago and I remember thinking it feels alright. if anyone has any info on these rods it would be appreciated.

I like the full graphite rods but the way I treat my gear (back of the ute most trips) a full graph rod is not an option so composite it is.

Cheers guys.

What generator would i need?

Gonna start doing regular trips up north and want to bring fish fillets back. Weve got a deep freezer so we need a generator to run it. What power minimum would we need? Had a quick look on gumtreee and they are all different Kva I dont even know what that means I know nothing about generators. We were gonna hire one I havent seen the price to hire them but figure might be better to buy one any advice greatfully accepted

Poor form from Two Rocks Fisho's

Went out for a fish yesterday off Two Rocks. Never usually fish there because of the crazyness at the ramp.

Got to the ramp at 6:10am to find a que of 13 boats waiting. After 15 mins we had slowly moved up the que when i noticed a nice big Haines Hunter and Partol at the top of the ramp just sitting there. Went for a wander to investigate and the two guys waiting there had a flat battery on the Patrol. They asked if i could jump start them. Sure no problems.

In the whole 20 seconds it took to jump start them i asked how long they had been waiting. he said they had asked around 10 cars and non would help cause they wanted to go out fishing asap. Couldnt belive that 10 fellow fisho's couldnt spend 20 seconds to jump start him. He even had all the leads hooked up ready for a car to help.

Crazy thing is the guys that were waiting for the ramp were all standing around watching others launch and had plenty of time on their hands.

So if this was you who was asked and said no Poor form. hope you caught bugger all all day. Bet if he was down the bottom of the ramp holding up the ramp people would have helped.

Second thing is why dont people use both sides of the ramp? plenty of room to have two boats side by side. I did and got the dirtiest look by everyone. Asked everyone if they wanted to go first and knowone did so i cut the que and used it. Easy as with a few deckies. Even pulled it in with a oversize boat on the jetty side and was no problem at all. I can understand if you have a massive boat but surely its just common sense. Wide enough and can half the time of launching. Just hug the right hand side. reverse slowly off trailer and pick up driver off the jetty when they get there. ???????????

Long Liners out of Perth

Curious to find out if anyone knows where long liners operate out of Perth and Surrounding areas?

Was out off Mindarie yesterday and we managed to hook what we initially called a stingray, a 200 odd metre piece of long lining rope, which must have snapped off somewhere. It still had droppers, hooks and stainless clips on it.

Did the right thing and bought it back in, but thought it strange to find off Mindarie? Although it could have drifted from anywhere. It came from 60 metres off the bottom.

No Weights holding each end down, although one end did have a stainless buckle on the end, not sure what that attaches too

Public Holiday Pink

Conned my favorite little deckie into getting up really early and coming out to the 3 Mile with me this morning.  My regular (YPM) had mates staying over and couldn’t leave them and the Friday night “ring in” had to study for exams – fair enough.  When it is all said and done however, a day on the water with your young daughter is gold.

As usual, if you want to catch the pinks, we got out there just as it was getting light – Hillarys is an excellent ramp and you have no problem launching and retrieving in the dark.  Went to our usual spot as it just keeps giving and giving – I found it by accident one day and I don’t know what it is about it but it has very rarely failed to produce.  Got a floater in the water, set the bait runner and started setting up,  and within a minute it was running away.  My clear lack of attention meant I missed it however a squid latched onto the left over pillie but covering the deckie with black ink didn’t seem like a good thing to do, and it was quite small, so we made no attempt to boat it.

A quick re-bait and within 30 seconds it was smashed again.  I was ready for this one and got a good solid hook up.  It was quite feisty and it had the characteristics of a good pink so was no real surprise when it got to the boat.  My deckie did an absolutely awesome job of getting the net under it so we boated a 72cm pink within 5 minutes of arriving at the spot.

We both got straight back out there and the deckie hooked up on a bottom rig.  This one was very large and unfortunately she got absolutely smoked and busted off.  As is the way with the pinks, they go off as quick as they come on and we didn’t have a hit for the next hour.  A day on the water with the kids is not about targeting the large specimens, but making sure the kids have a good time, catch some fish and enjoy the experience.  My deckie was keen on going and catching some bread and butter fish as I do think she was a little scared by the power of the big pinks.

A quick call home and we met mum at the ramp to offload the pink for cold storage, and my deckie could go for that much needed toilet break on terra firma.  We then set off on search of fish she could land on light gear, plus I really wanted some whiting, herring and skippy for my next batch of burley.

What a fantastic few hours we had.  Conditions were perfect for small boat travel and we went to a few different spots and explored the ocean.  My usual whiting spot of Trigg was a dud so we headed out a bit deeper and got some solid sand whiting.  We then headed to an offshore reef and got a heap of skippy and a variety of other interesting things.  The best part was I hooked them and let the deckie reel them in – she even got a 35cm pink.  The 20+kg Sambo chasing some of the skippy up to the boat was quite an experience for her  – no attempt to hook him with a livey as there are only so many hours in the day.

Back home through the big ships and a stop to look at a huge pod of dolphins all around the boat topped off what was a really memorable experience.  When we got back, she couldn’t wait to tell everyone about all the things that happened on the day – gold.

Pro Cray Fishermen

What are the rules for Pro Cray Fishermen these days? I have no particular reason for asking. Just curious. Is there a catch quota now? Also are they still allowed to fish for Demersals?
