Avoiding North West Blowies

Hi All, The past 3-4 months of fishing have been seriously frusturating with the large numbers of North West Blowfish. We predomently fish anywhere from 15-50m of water between Ocean Reef and Mindarie, targeting demersals using a range of baits and large Plastics etc. We just cant get past the blowies, they love any bait you drop down there and even beat the target fish to plastics.

Whats worse is they they even put up a very convincing fight leaving you in shock when they hit the surface, Even had one mimicking a snapper last weekend. Needless to say out comes the bat! . This Saturday was a complete disgrace, we fishing from 15m for snapper right out to 22nm in 48m in an attempt to find some un-plagued ground with no success, blowies everywhere. $200+ worth of fuel and bait later I am of the view we could have simply went to the fishmarket and had a massive Seafood BBQ.

So sorry to rant on but my question is, does anyone have a method to get past these bastards?

Cheers

have noticed lots of talk re water temp

So what should I be targeting now its getting colder in the water? Have been trying to be a non bait boat with middling to low success. Does anyone reckon certain species must have bait or does it change depending on conditions/season as to whether you use artificial or real?

Id be really interested in peoples opinion.

Cheers!

Tantabiddi Boat Ramp Question

Guys

Heading up Exmouth in a couple of weeks just wondering if anyone has any updated info on the state of the ramp at Tantabiddi. I know it was pretty well unusable after the rains a week or so ago has this improved at all?

The last photo I had seen looked like the old days at low tide with the hole at the end of the ramp and plenty of sand to get to it.

Cheers

Another Abrolhos question?

 Hi all,

I am looking at getting out to the Abrolhos some time soon for the first time. I have a couple of questions that hopefully the regulars can answer......how much fuel do you use for an over nighter or a weekend, I have a 610 sports cab trail craft I think about 260L with a 115 4stroke merc plan on taking an extra 60/80L in jerrys.

what about communications would a 27mhz radio be enough, could possibly get a marine VHF handheld if needed/recommended

drag netting

G'day guys,

Is it illegal to drag net in the swan for prawns? I have seen some people doing it however I thaught netting of any kind was illegal in the swan.

Get back to me,

Cheers.

Exmouth tides for gt fishing

Just wondering what tides have worked best for gt fishing around the oyster stacks in exmouth also stick baits or poppers

Southern Stones

Gday guys planning a trip down south to the stones and Iv been doing a bit of research and understand it can be pretty dangerous, more so than steep point ? We will be well equipped with harnesses etc and will be keeping an eye in the swell but other than if anyone has any gear tips or recommendations that would be great ! Never been down there before and we will be camping for a few days, so even camp sites, certain ledges to stay away from or ledges with anchor points (without giving away spots) would be much appreciated !

Cheers !!

Heres a couple of recent fishing photos in return haha

Trolling setups? didn't land a fish at steep point :(

Just got back from a week at steep point.   Boat based.  Weather was crap.  Windy and big swells kept us away from the cliff face of dhi.  But when my lure was hit the knot on the leader / swivel - wire trace gave way. :((

Last year I was running 24kg braid to 100lb rover leader (fg knot) to a swivel, then the wire trace.

This year I was running the same braid to 60lb fluorocarbon leader to the swivel.  The knot to the swivel was the one giving way.

I am now thinking I should give the leader a miss and go straight from the braid  to the swivel with a double palomar knot.  And then straight to the wire trace. Effectively eliminating the leader all together.

Thoughts?

How does everyone else run their trolling rigs?

Prawns- Swan river

 Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has been getting many prawns in the swan after the recent rains? Thinking of giving it a crack tomorrow night. Have any particular locations been doing well?

Cheers.

Herring and Squid

Went out Friday Arvo to get a few Herring for fresh Dhuie bait come Saturday.

Got 14 herring and ate 3 that night.. yummo. but while there chucked out the squid jig and nailed 11 squid.. Double yummo..

As for Saturday Dhuie fishing, it was the worst day I can ever remember. Got 2 undersize Dhuies and about 10 friggin bolt cutters.. Some of them friggin huge..

Shifetd a dozen times but couldnt shake the pricks of things..

Just before we decided to head in we picked up a nice size YTK.

Stopped off at North Tail in 10mtrs of water for some sand whiting on the way home and ended up getting 14 before the bloody Bolt cutters arrived and smashed us yet again..

Cant get over the amount of these friggin things around ATM.. Anyone else seeing these in numbers??

Moore river status?

Heading up this arvo and was wondering if there was any info/ gossip bout conditions?

Thanks all!

Squid?

Jumped in late yesterday looking for a feed of squid, Cockburn sound produced a few small squid relative to the time spend targeting them.

Any feedback as to where the larger squad are bing taken?

Have a boat but love Landbased too

Over the weekend with the herring running in the cut decided to go for a fish. Tempted to take the boat, anchor up in the cut and have a go, but realised that I loved landbased just as much. So went away from the mad crowd at the Marina site and had a cool time C&Ring hezza's. It made me realise I loved LB as much as boat based fishing, and since returning from Karratha where landbased isnt a fantastic option, it was a nice change to go back to grass roots fishing from shore.

Made me wonder whther others also share the duel passion about both, or surely love one above the other. Obviously based on fisho's with boats.

Deep drop sounder porn

Been getting heaps of questions about my fcv295 and tranies in an ali lately so heres a few sounder pics from the weekend. There's a lot of bait but also a lot of 8 bar cod and big pinks

the last pic is my 2kw 38hz on a drop down pole for when it's a bit rough and 2kw 200hz

Special rods for WA use

Looking at Gary Howard rods and their is a section that deals with Surf and Rock rods for WA.

I am using Alvey reels currently on a Snyder Glas  12 ft Surf/Rock rod without any difficulty.

So what is different about  Western Australia's conditions?

Cheers

North Metro Run Yesterday

Reel Care.

Just been going over my collection of reels and was wondering how other persons look after their "Lower end "reels.
One of my reels has some corrosion and dents (small) on the spool. I have removed the line and am dressing the damage so that the surface is smooth. Am wondering what others do to prevent corrosion down in the spool area covered with line. Do you wipe a corrosion preventative over the spool rim that the line travels over.
Looking at second hand reels both on here and on Gum tree and noticed the reels also had damage to this surface, surely this surface would damage the line on every cast. What's you say on this.

Eyebrows?

I don't know how many times I have been asked if fish have eyebrows - probably none if I think about it. But anyway, here is conclusive proof that some of them do.

P.s. ate him last night and he was the best pinkie I have ever tasted. So look for fish with eyebrows if you want something delicious

Swan River

Hi guys just wondering what you would expect to catch in the river at the moment and were abouts.

Metro Salmon = First Salmon

Headed out yesterday morning to hit up some rumoured / photographed Metro Salmon with some resident FW gurus.

Now since 2011, I have caught a few dozen herring, a big snook and a Tailor...3 years and 14 days later after my first brag worthy catch, in the metro area no less, with the city in sight, 3 x 60cm + Salmon.

The morning involved two spots, the first having one hookup, a bent hook and shattered hopes. Per my normal fishing abilities, I was able to find the herring and had a rolling mountain of them chasing a Ricter plug. The the leed boat managed to get a couple then it all went quiet.

We (three boats) then headed to the next spot, where there were already a pile of boats similar to D9 when the Snapper season is about to end.

After a few casts are managed to hook something which I was having a great play with until snap the fishing WA Xtreme line snaps.

After a few more casts and seeing the fish stalking my plug it all went quiet, but I looked up to see a group of boats casting into what looked like weed, with lots of splashing.

Quick tonk over and it was all on. 5 or so boats, more at times, with each boat having a hook up at times. A hook up per cast at times, with some flicking lures. Managed to land three, and kept two with snapper coming up to boats within 20m of me.

Fishing Comps

does anybody know of any landbaced comps in perth fishing waters. coming up. Thanks

Cruise craft 500

I thnk ive found the uprgrade to the tinny and i would like to ask for some feedback, ive found a Cruise craft 500 2000 hull paired with a 2010 yam 115 outboard with 104 hrs on the clock. The boat is in good condition on a new trailer with Lowrance hdi 5 wide beam plotter/sounder combo and another Lowrance plotter/sounder combo (one does the wide beam scan) comes with gold maps, the outboard has new hydrolic stearing, just serviced with all recipts and log book. UHF and 27mghz radios and all the rest of equiptment you can think of.

The asking price is 28k, this is my first full size boat so im not very well clued up on them. Ive done plenty of reading and the boat sounds ideal but im yet to find a fellow fisher that has one.

i want to head out 5 miles plus to do some bottom bashing a bit of shark fishing then trailer her up the coast to exmouth etcfor holidays.

does this sound like the ideal boat for me and my requirements, ive looked at the aluminium hulls alsoa nd found the trailcraft a bit of a banger in the chop andmy friends5m plate hull chivers rolles plenty in the swell.

ive had a back problem in the past so a smooth as poss ride is importamt and obviously a bit of comfort for the wife and kids when they come out on her.

Burley Recipe and Technique

Hi All,

A member asked a question on one of my previous posts as follows:

Can I just ask about your use of burley? I have used burley when beach fishing for herring and so on, but never for demersals from a boat. I have always just drifted over the lumps and hoped a fish would be there. So how exactly do you do it? Do you have one of those burley masher things on the back of your boat? Surely that's just for fishing on the surface.   Or do you get the burley to the bottom somehow? Burley cage (herring style)? Or do you send one of those big burley things down your anchor line?

I am certainly no expert in fishing Perth Metro waters (limited local knowledge and experience), and generally fish in <15m, but replied with what I do as follows.

I make my own burley out of fish frames (whiting, herring), fillets (tuna, skippy, tailor, wrasse, parrot, snook), pilchards, squid, shells (cray, crab), chicken feed pellets and tuna oil.  I have an old style mincer that I just chuck it all in and grind to a paste.  I then add more oil to get a consistency like thick tooth paste - the ratio of the fish to pellets is important as you don’t want it too crumbly.  I then spoon it into glad bags and make logs that will fit into my burley bomb.  Into the freezer for a couple of days at minimum.  If you do it right, it produces a fine textured burley for 1-3 hours.

Where the burley bomb is placed in the water column is dependent on the conditions - I attach it to 30m of cord and tie off the front of the boat as necessary.  If there is little current I keep it near the surface as it spreads wide getting to the bottom.  If there is a lot of current, I drop it deeper so the burley is where the bait is.  I will always send a floater down to be in the burley trail.  I generally fish with pilchards so get a steady trail of heads and tails into the water as well.  It doesn't always work but we seem to be going ok with this strategy.

I wanted to pass this on for anyone else that has similar questions, and also see if members could add to my response with any burley tricks and tips of their own.

Mick
