DIY Winch Install
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2020-12-06 18:35Been procrastinating on this one for too long and after the Mrs made a meal of dropping the anchor at a packed Rocky Bay it was time.
Have been researching for ages and had the Bell Viper in mind but the fellas at Whitworths have been less than helpful with advice. I walked into a new store MACA in Wangara for some fuel hose and after an hour chatting walked out with $2k worth of winch and accessories. I ended up going the 1000W Micro with the hi spec rope.
It's taken me all week getting up at 5am to chug away before work as I like to plan, measure, mark, walk away, sleep and remeasure before I start drilling holes. Neodymium magnets are a must have tool for seeing exactly where you'll be drilling through on the other side of the well.
So far I've got the roller, winch, wiring and switches in and need some longer bolts to mount the bow roller and run the winch wiring through the anchor well.

Barramundi ROD & REEL bought
Submitted by Mainey on Thu, 2020-12-03 23:37Hi,
Looking at going up north for a Barra fishing trip next winter.
Will be taking my 4.2mt boat, so want to buy a new rod and reel suitable for landing the elusive Barra :)
Have read various retailers, fishing charter and suppliers notes on what is most suited and many appear contradictory in various ways.
*Question*
Do we have any serious Barra fisher-persons here who are prepared to share information as to what they recommend to get Barra to the boat ?
My thoughts are a decent BAITCASTER reel with suitable baitcaster rod, to get the 'bait' out there near the bank, trees and places where the Barra live?
The choice looks like a #200 Baitcaster
What BRAND and Model ??

Freediving Mask Recommendation
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Thu, 2020-12-03 11:03Can anyone recommend a decent mask and snorkel with a GoPro mount and good snorkel purge for some shallow water free diving? With my kids all being water confident I’m keen to give the crabs a crack by hand this year and my old set has seen better days.
Cheers

Missing cray pot
Submitted by Brando on Wed, 2020-12-02 19:02Hi all
When I was coming back into Hillarys this morning early directly into the sunlight I accidentily ran over a pot float. I couldnt reattach the float as we couldnt find the rope. I have the floats and if your float is MA 0567 please PM me. I am happy to purchase a new set of ropes for your pot. If you know of anyone who's pot this maybe, please also PM me and I can get in touch with them.

Conversion stern drive to outboard - advice please
Submitted by stumpie on Tue, 2020-12-01 14:31Hi all,
Wondering if anyone on the forum has any info on who to make contact with in respect to repowering a srern drive to outboards. Is there someone that can manage this entire process of building the pods, reglassing the hole from the old engines and installing the new outboards?
Has anyone done this before? Would you provide some tips or heads up on what to avoid etc etc.
Cheers

Caution for those using Cockburn Sound
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2020-11-30 20:16The old Kwinana Bulk Jetty has a smouldering fire.
large timber pilons have been reported in the water posing a severe hazard to boaties......hopefully with the strong onshore breeze most of not all will be washed onto the beach reducing any hazard.

Saving private Cray
Submitted by Sea Hunter on Sat, 2020-11-28 17:34G'day all. It's been a while since I have visited this place. I tried pickling some Crays last session. It's oookkk but nothing to write home about. I put it in a brine over night and in the morning it was magnificent. I then did a pickle and slowly brought jars up to 85 deg. Waited till all bubbles left the jars and left to cool on the bench.
The final product was a bit flowery. Any suggestions on preserving Crays- ie Saving Private Crays

Looking for a price on a new Engel?
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2020-11-23 07:53I've been considering a fridge for the back seat of the Space Cab. Obviously has to be within certain dimensions, so the search had settled on about a half-dozen candidates, one of them being the Engel MT-V45, the single zone . Looking at prices for a while now, they always run from $1199 to full retail of $1399. I was in Repco on Abernethy rd getting a small auto electrical component, and noticed they were in stock., no price displayed. So I made a casual enquiry at checkout, yep, $1399, full retail. But I know they do a discount for RAC members, so asked about that. ......$1119.00 ....so I am now the owner of another new Engel. Worth remembering if you are in the market. I'm sure someone will chip in saying that they got it/can get it cheaper, but, if your old fridge sh*ts the tin, and you need one in a hurry, one to remember.

Point Peron boat ramp dedicated lanes
Submitted by SeperateKnob on Sun, 2020-11-22 12:04Hey the council is trialing dedicated lanes for launch and retrieve. Should be a good idea for the cray run to avoid confusion with the crazy peak period early mornings. I think it would be better to have 4 of the 6 ramps for retrieving starting from 11am. Don’t see the point in having 3 launch ramps once the sea breeze has kicked in

Advice on rod/reel
Submitted by Seahorse7 on Sun, 2020-11-22 07:17Hello Wise People!
Im in the market for a new rod with a spin reel for boat fishing demersals, bigger fish in general and able to do some jigging like baited jigs, out in water up to 100 mtr ish, mainly 20-80 though. Looking for a good set up with proper saltwater reel, good bearings etc. I've got 6 ft and 6.5ft rods with 4000 class reels which are great but struggle on bigger stuff. Then I've got rods with Tld15 type reels, and trolling rods. So looking to fill the gap with a more capeable spin reel outfit. Im not looking for a cheap rig and won't say price is no object but I will spend a bit more for quality that's worth it!
Your thoughts and ideas appreciated

Spiked by Tarwhine
Submitted by Rets on Sat, 2020-11-21 17:33 G'day,
So a couple of weeks back I was fishing in Lancelin and caught a Tarwhine, I went to grab it and it spiked me in my finger.
I don't think any of the spike broke off in my finger, but the sore is still there after a couple of weeks and it still stings when I squeeze it, but it doesn't hurt if I'm not squeezing it.
Is this normal when you get spiked by Tarwhine? The sore is right on a joint so I'm thinking it's maybe just taking a while to heal because of that. It doesn't look infected at all.
Read back on some old posts that say magnoplasm works for stuff like this, so tried some of that for the time being.
Cheers

Which fish to target this time of year
Submitted by the_lane on Tue, 2020-11-17 10:55Planning to head out from Woodman Point ramp this weekend for a morning fish. I'm a noob so don't tend to venture beyond the islands unless its flat.
So what are the best species to target in the sound this time of year? I seem to do pretty well with squid, but anytime I drop a baited whiting rig down I get overrun with trumpeter.

Few whites in the pots
Submitted by still trying on Mon, 2020-11-16 18:55Finally got a little window that I could make the most of and checked my pots this arvo had 3 pots out and took our 4th one out with us. Got another pot stuck I have had the worst year ever for getting pots stuck. But was able to get 3 crays in each pot and got my first ever southern, pretty stoked. Also threw back a undersized white.
