Buying a new reel for exmouth, thoughts?
Submitted by flexn on Mon, 2013-03-11 22:03Hey all,
Looking for some advice on a new reel for exmouth in april.
I already have a daiwa ld20 2 speed with 50lb for most of my fishing, a spin reel with 30lb for popping, but want another reel for trolling/bottom bouncing and maybe even jigging. Was thinking of a overhead and not interested in a star drag. I will probably be spooling it with around 80lb braid.
I was thinking a single speed saltist lever drag? not sure on what size
Price range around $300 give or take. Or even buy from the states or second hand.
Any suggestions would be good.
Thanks

North Cottesloe Tailor
Submitted by Aaron_Moses95 on Mon, 2013-03-11 20:16Went down to a beach in cottesloe, about 1k north of the groyne. Fairly calm day , but still decent chop on the water. Was throwing a 35g metal , before i noticed some large tailor cruising about 2m in front of me. Most would have been around the 40cm mark, but i saw a couple that would have been around 70-80cm. They were completely un interested in bait and lures. Was so annoying to see them so close to me but swim past my lure time after time. Managed to jig up a decent flathead on a metal, other than that got nothin.
Other than the fact that it was fairly calm, why do u guys reckon that they didnt hit anything?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

denmark
Submitted by thebmac on Mon, 2013-03-11 20:03hey guys, heading down to denmark next weekend and am in research mode. i have found a few spots worthy of a try. the main thing i am struggling with is finding a boat ramp.
the map i have looked at has said there is one at ocean beach. is that a beach launch? or is it a sealed ramp? i have never done a beach launch and not really that confident. is the ramp in the estuary sealed? at least one of the days i will be heading to albany and having a try out there but if i dont have to drive that far i wont.
and lastly any reports on the salmon or is the water temp still too high??
any help or advice would be appreciated.

Fishing rod holders
Submitted by Dale on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:39Heard a story on local ABC radio today where the police in the mid west have been cracking down on vehicles with non approved rod racks. They were giving yellow stickers for them and saying the law was changed against them a year ago. First time I've heard about that. Don't quite know what type of rod racks they are alluding to either.
cheers

Flathead spikes
Submitted by Super peg on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:09I have heard ( cannot remember where) that if one becomes spiked from the spikes on the gills of a flathead that the pain will go away if you rub the area spiked on the belly slime of the flathead, would act a remedy to relieve pain, but think it was mentioned that it needs to be the same fish,
has anyone heard this? Or better yet put it into practice? Or is it a load to be spat and not swallowed

Jigging help
Submitted by Fisher Kid on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:04Am noob at jigging and am seeking some help. I got a 200g. 150 and 120 g jigs, all with plain assists no skirts, i use a little rovex altus lw20 combo(not the best of them but im 14, and i dont have a boat, only use it when im out on a mates boat), i do the jigging --> lift drop lift drop etc, winding as fast as i can during that. And i get no hits, nothing, havent really tried that much but im wondering what im doing worng, o and i usuually use them in between 30-50m of water, for demersals and sambos.
What should i be doing?, Do i need skirted assists? and should i jig alll the way up from 50m or just a bit up then drop it back down? Should i rig with the assists at the top or the bottom? (One of my jigs if rigged so the assists at the bottom will sway side to side when going down)
Any help greatly appreciated.

New sounder up to $3000. Need advice from users
Submitted by Camo.W on Mon, 2013-03-11 15:41Hi guys,
Its time for an upgrade. currently running a Northstar M81 combo unit (came with the boat - tournament 2250 walkaround). Starting to have issues with the sounder and have decided it will now just be used as my plotter.
We have up to $3000 to spend and generally fish the 40-90m range, although have been hitting the fads recently and wouldn't mind sounding out some deeper water and having a bit of a crack at dropping in the 200-400m range.
I'm not sure what transducer is on there at the moment so will be pissing it off and thinking that at the deeper depths we will need 1kw. So far the names that have been coming up are the furuno fvc585 and lowrance hds units, although I dont need a combo unit to do plotting as well. anyone used the simrads? also I do like to manually tweak a lot so easier manual modes would be better.
Interested to know what anyone with some deep knowledge thinks? Cheers Guys

WA Ocean user survey in relation to your interactions with sharks
Submitted by Notorious on Mon, 2013-03-11 15:11As you know, over the past couple of years encounters between people and sharks have received a huge amount of attention, particularly in Western Australia. No doubt you’re also well aware that the WA government has recently changed policy concerning the management of sharks, such that Department of Fisheries can ‘track, catch and, if necessary, destroy sharks identified in close proximity to beachgoers’ (Gov. of WA, 27th September 2012).
We are two researchers working at the University of Wollongong and University of New England interested in learning more about the views of ocean-users on this issue. We want to better understand the WA government response to recent events, and the implications of the change in policy. As part of our project, we have made an online questionnaire to try to gauge the views of ocean-users towards sharks. In particular, we want to learn about the thoughts of ocean-users towards shark management in WA.
We think this project and survey might be of interest to WAUC members. So we’re writing to ask if you would be willing to circulate (via an email list, word of mouth etc.) and/or promote our survey on your website or Facebook page if you have one?
Our aim is to promote the survey as widely as we can, as soon as we can. You can access the survey here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ocean-usersandsharksinWA
As a long time ocean-user I am aware that a great deal of effort is currently being directed towards better mitigating the risk of human/shark encounters in WA. But we think that as yet the knowledge, views and opinions of ocean-users themselves have not been widely consulted. The goal of our research is to address the lack of ocean-user engagement with the hope of informing public policy.
Please see the attached Participant Information Sheet if you would like further information on the project. If you have any questions at all about the survey or our research, please feel free to contact us.
Thanks very much in advance. We hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards
Andrew Warren and Leah Gibbs

Quobba trip
Submitted by Ash06 on Mon, 2013-03-11 08:50Hi guys
we are planning a quobba trip for sometime around dec/jan coming. I was wondering what people's experiences have been at these months weather wise. Unfortunately last time we went was end of September and we were greeted with westerly winds every day, and huge swells with dirty water which basically made fishing impossible. I'm hoping this time to plan it a bit better so we can actually fish most or every day up there. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Ash

Expiring EPIRBS
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2013-03-11 07:59Just a reminder to those who upgraded their epirbs promptly when the new frequency was introduced - your epirb has probably expired - I hadn't realised it but my wife who is meticulous about such things pointed it out to me the other day and whilst it is registered as required they don't alert you either so check the date on yours before being turned back at the ramp

Wire trolling for macks
Submitted by ricey on Sun, 2013-03-10 17:57So if I decide I want to use wire , what wire leader is best and what length?
the premade ones I have are short (40 cm) and snap swivels look bit dodgy.
not super keen on own made ones as tried the weld type and was not sure it would hold? Want lure to swim true.
how many roll the dice and don't use wire at all?
