Fishing Peaceful Bay
Submitted by ryanmunro77 on Wed, 2016-12-21 10:51I'm heading down to Peaceful with the family and wandering whether it is worth taking my boat (4.5m coastrunner) to chase some KGs etc...or just have a crack beach fishing? How exposed is the coastline for taking out the boat and the family fishing?

Xmas Present for a New Boat Fisho
Submitted by devhay on Wed, 2016-12-21 09:34Hey guys, the old man has just bought a new boat this year after selling his last one a few years ago.. he's an experienced land based fisho and knows his way around a boat but has never done any serious boat fishing other than squid & bread and butter fish in the sound and the odd black arse off rotto
So far we've had a bit of luck with crays this season but now that the demersal ban is done I know he's hanging to get into some fish!
Any idea on what I could get him to set him up for a bit of demeral bashing? He's got basic 2-5kg, 8-10kg and 10-15kg spin and overhead combos and heads out from freo, mostly around rotto and the sound
Was thinking maybe the How to Use and Echo Sounder/Fish Finder book and maybe some termial tackle to suit?
Any must haves that I should look at getting him?
Cheers

Trio fined for undersized crab haul as Fisheries conduct blitz on motorists
Submitted by groverwa on Wed, 2016-12-21 09:24Have a look at www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/trio-fined-for-undersized-crab-haul-as-fisheries-conduct-blitz-on-motorists-20161221-gtfl97.html
Expensive crabs
Three WA fisherman have copped hefty fines after being caught with 61 undersized crabs just days after Fisheries conducted a blitz on motorists near Mandurah, seizing hundreds of undersized crustaceans.
Yong Zhong Xiao, Shuangtao Lio and Yu Liu were fined in Mandurah Magistrates Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to catching 61 undersized crabs on November 26.
Fisheries officers found the crabs in the boot of the trio's car after they had been using scoop nets in Coolup.
All three said they had planned to eat the crabs and had not measured their catch.
The size of the crabs ranged from 89-124mm.
The minimum legal size for blue manna crabs is 127mmm while the maximum bag limit per person is 10.
Xiao, Liu and Liu were all fined $500 plus court costs.
They were all also ordered to pay a mandatory additional penalty of $3050.
The fines come after Fisheries officers cordoned off a one kilometre stretch of Forrest Highway on Sunday to check vehicles near Mandurah for undersized catches.
Of the 700 vehicles stopped during the five-hour operation, 23 had offences detected involving 41 people.
One vehicle had 44 undersized crabs inside, with each of the four occupants receiving a $1000 fine.
Another vehicle had 42 undersized crabs, while seven cars were stopped with between 11 to 19 undersized crabs each, and nine vehicles were stopped with between one to seven undersized crabs each.
Fisheries south metropolitan compliance manager John Breeden said the operation showed most fishers do the right thing.
"The disappointing aspect was that some fishers are not measuring their crabs correctly or simply ignoring the size limit rule and taking undersized crabs," he said.

Mandurah Crabs - Scooping
Submitted by bulkie on Tue, 2016-12-20 12:30We'd usually have a fair amount of success scooping off Herron.
Got a 18 month old now and planning to bring him along for some scooping action. My preference is not to go too deep this time round.
After some advice really for anywhere not above knee level. Would be great if most weren't undersized.

Denham Xmas
Submitted by Fletch on Tue, 2016-12-20 12:16hi all,
heading to Denham and the surrounds with the family on Thursday for a couple of weeks. i have researched up a heap info on here which is great and a huge thanks to members on this site always being willing to share and help...really great.
i'm checking to see if anyone has headed out to Cape Peron recently and any current feedback in regards to conditions, things to watch out for etc..
i am fairly experienced in 4x4 terrain and have a standard Ranger Wildtrak (not precious with it...happy to bash a bit), so thinking capabilities are ok. the only thing i'm cautious about is the wife and 2 kids.
i'm only thinking of a day trip out that way for a bit of adventure (and a fish!).
appreciate any feedback and hope i can actually post something with a fish in it.
Cheers

Not a day good for boating... especially with a hangover!
Submitted by Darren253 on Mon, 2016-12-19 13:36We stayed over on Rotto for a mates 40th on Saturday evening. We had a rough ride out from Woodies early on Saturday, bagged out on crays, awesome fishing off the west end (mate got his first sized Dhu) between 8am and 1pm, followed by far too much to drink on Saturday arvo/evening in Thompsons bay. (mistake no. 1)
I've got a 6m Stessl/130 Honda with full clears so was expecting/planning an uncomfortable ride home on Sunday but a lads weekend pass is well worth it. (mistake no. 2)
Forecast when we planned the trip (Thursday) was 18knots SW on Sunday all day, By Saturday mid morning they were forecasting 22knots but it turned out actuals on Sunday morning of 27 gusting to 31 knots!
I have a newfound respect for my boat, but also the ocean! My aerial snapped on Saturday when my mate in another boat pulled along side to grab some bait and cleaned it up so I was down a 27mhz and had flat battery on the handheld VHF after the days fishing chatter. (mistake no. 3). That alone feeling will never leave me.
I spent the first 45mins wondering how the hell we were going to get through this and opened my eyes to just how easily and quickly things can go wrong in bad weather. I am far from cautious in life but was genuinely petrified.
I'm so grateful that I have a solid boat but more importantly a reliable motor! I had power when I needed it and reliably chugged through the mine field that was the ocean. After nearly an hour of zig zaging and surfing, I've never been so happy to make it into the shipping channel as I was yesterday morning! If we went down there at least someone could have raised the alarm. Around Rotto, waves the size of houses came from 2 directions and only 2 boat lengths apart. The swells were so close together it felt like we weren't getting anywhere!
Once sheltered behind straddlers and the FFB things seem to ease up slightly but a 50min trip still took 2hrs 35mins to get back to Woodies!
I will never go out in anything forecast close to 20knots again! Things can change so quickly and as the title says, it's only a "forecast". All of this was wind driven with relevantly low ocean swells according to the graphs!
We had lifejackets & kill switch on, EPIRB and flares out in a bag but it gave me little confidence when the ocean is so rough! I will be buying and installing a VHF in the boat as a second option, giving the old girl good bath and polish, and never be putting either of us in that position again. My boat has far bigger balls than I do!
Still, my mate wanted a 40th to remember, he got one of those...

Licence for river fishing
Submitted by Mooo0 on Sun, 2016-12-18 23:23Hello,
Last time I've fished was probably 10 or more years ago and I am in search of a new hobbie so I was thinking of getting into fishing.
However, when I check the fisheries website, I seem require a licence to even do it on theside of the river.
Do I understand that correctly? or is that for some other special river fishing that requires a licence?
If I do require a licence, can I apply one on the website and throw the line in straight away? or do I need to wait for the card to arrive first?
Thanks in advance!

Submitted by striker on Sun, 2016-12-18 09:56Recently moved to Esperance and bought a park pass, no sweat happy to do the right thing, however got some mates coming down n we might drive through the parks with them which can be expensive over the course of a week or so.
Have spoken to a few guys down here and they are saying if you have a boat fishing license then that covers you to go into the national parks as well.
Can anyone confirm this ?

Occy Pot Set Up
Submitted by Bing on Fri, 2016-12-16 18:21Hi FW Members,
Long time member and forum stalker but don’t really post, which is going to change starting now! I've purchased my my own boat and working locally now so should have plenty of time to get out on the water.
I've read a few posts about occy pot set ups and thought I’d share the set up I'm currently making. Feel free to give me any feedback, advice or opinions (good or bad). I've currently made 6 pots, they're made from 100mm pvc left over from a drainage job out the back and some left over patio tube. I blanked off the back of the pvc and poured concrete in that along with adding concrete to the patio tube to stop any rolling. Really I could have done without the caps and just taped the end until the concrete sets. I plan on running a main line and clipping pots on ever 5m - 10m.
I’m in 2 minds about rigging my pots with a float and gear I.D or just marking on my GPS without a float, yes I know this is illegal :/
I thought if I used a float others will be able to locate them easier and pull them, I was hoping that if they did they throw them back close by and I could find them next time by searching for the float. By running without a float it would be harder for them to find and pull, if they did find them and pull them it would mean id have to spend more time searching for them as they will be off the GPS mark
Was wondering what everyone else’s experience was? Have they lost a lot of pots in the past and are others constantly pulling them? I've found countless amounts of pots while squidding and never once pulled them, some people just can’t help themselves.
Cheers
