Sounder electrical interference
Submitted by ChrisG on Tue, 2016-12-27 20:39
hello, wondering if anyone has any ideas of cause and how to fix?
have recently installed a 1kw tranny on my head unit.
Previously had two different types of 600w trannys with no issues whatsoever.
the issue is that I get a single line of what I think is electrical interference when I kick the motor into gear from neutral, and sometimes immediately when just starting to accelerate from a constant speed eg moving from 10 to 15kts quickly.
The interference is only very minor eg a single vertical line from top to bottom of screen, or smaller vertical line mid water or even below sea bottom. It's only intermittent...somtimes just one fine line or a couple of fine lines in the time it takes for a full screen scroll/refresh, then it goes away. Very rarely it also happens at cruise at a constant speed but not often.
not a massive deal and the increase in picture quality from the bigger tranny more than makes up for it, BUT it gives me the Sh!ts no knowing what causing it or how to fix it!
as I said never happened in the past, only since installing the 1kw tranny.
head unit is wired into batteries with no common wiring shared with anything else.
i was thinking a couple of potential causes, wondering what others think??
-increase in revs causes alternator to put out more into battery and that spike shows on screen?
-increase in revs/amps causes interference with the 1kw sounding?
-interference between sounder cable and other electrical cables in conduit (but didn't occur with other tannys)?
-batteries on way out and increase in power draw from new tranny is causing minor spike when alternator increases output (happens on both batteries thou even when completely isolated from each other, so don't think so)?

Rigs for big baits
Submitted by mulloway_hunter on Mon, 2016-12-26 20:13Hey iv recently purchursed a saltist 50 and a assasins beach mast and im wondering if anyone has a good rig to be able to cast big baits and sinkers easily without birds nesting. I find my ussual rig of a size 6 star and a half mullet spins too mutch because of the diffrent weight between the sinker and the bait in the air creating a birds nest.
Iv tried slide baiting a little bit but is a tricky technique to master. Any help would be appreciated in advance thank you

Engraving pots
Submitted by Jmac on Mon, 2016-12-26 19:34Found the value of engraving cray pots with your ID today, lost a pot off Hilary's last week in the minefield at the back of the reef. Gave up on it and was resigned to forking out 200 bucks for a new one.
had a call from fisheries today, they pulled spot that had had the rope cut and was tied to a life jacket.
they rang me as had the id on it. Said the vast majority they find don't have it so it's a good idea.
Also if who ever tied off the rope to the jacket is a member, thanks very much good to know the majority of us are decent and do the right thing by their fellow fishos. Legend

In response to Timboon,s dummy spitting episode
Submitted by barneyboy on Mon, 2016-12-26 19:12and for anyone else who might be interested.
I wasn't going to lower myself to this, but decided to put my point across.
As said and agreed to by you and other members on here, rec fisho's take more than pro's for a couple of species.
Further to that, lets take Cockburn Sound snapper fishery as an example. I don't fish it so feel free to correct me.
There is what, 1 or 2 wetliners that work the snapper in the sound?
On any given day when the snapper are on, there would be what, 50 to 60 rec boats fishing the same water. Lets say each rec boat took 2 fish at 6 to 8 kg a fish. That would = 3 to 400kg of snapper at a time.
In all honesty, even the best wetliner would struggle to land that over the same period.
That is why I say that rec fishos take more than pro's. Got it????
And as for you name calling and you 'not doing dumb well', you are doing fine, but you will probably need a lawyer for the defomation case as court jargon can be a bit difficult at the best of times.
But feel free to jump out from behind the safety of your keyboard and screen and say it to my face!! A reality check would do you wonders.
And for those peeps who love a fish but don't get much of a chance and have to purchase fish, don't worry our day will come.
Have I said enough here??

I heard that they maybe running off Cockatoo island with fuel pre booked and put on the barge.
I couldn't think of anything better then four days fishing the archipelago with a good wet season up our sleeve.

Charter first time, sea sickness possible?
Submitted by FishingBhutan on Sun, 2016-12-25 14:49Hi all forum members, this is my first post on this forum although I have been reading this forum for few years now. This forum with lots of insightful posts had a profound effect on me in becoming an amateur fisherman in my own right and learnt heaps about fishing in general like what knots (no pun intended) to what lures and so on.
Here is my question, I came to Australia about five and a half years ago from a landlocked mountainous country and therefore never got in a boat. Few months ago I thought I will go on a charter boat to do some fishing and got everything ready just short of paying and then pulled out because I was not too sure if I will get sea sickness or not. So I was wondering if the sea sickness is similar to car sickness and if you will get sea sickness even if you do not in cars? Also if I do decide to go ahead, what are the best way to avoid if possible or atleast control getting sea sick? Any advice is welcomed and once again, thanks you all heaps for wonderful posts.

Rottnest Island Marine Reserve
Submitted by dj dvd on Sat, 2016-12-24 17:59I've fished rotto plenty of time but alway targetted demersals in deeper water. My local whiting spot has been dead lever since last years salmon season (I think they ate all the kgs and sand whiting in the area). Anyway I'm thinking of targetting shallower water around Rotto for whiting. Doesn't anyone know if you allowed to fishing inside the Marine Island Reserve? I've alwats assumed you weren't, but looking at this guide it seems you can as long as you aren't fishing in the santuary zones. The Marine Island Reserve line that encompasses the whole island is about no discharge of solid waste, fuels etc?
Here is the guide:
file:///Users/danieldeelstra/Downloads/fishing-guide-rottnest-island.pdf
If anyone can provide clarity on the rule that would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas to fellow F/W members
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2016-12-24 12:06To all my fellow F/W members I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a most happy and prosperous new year.
Please take care when traveling over this most joyous of holidays and keep safe, be your travel by boat, ship, train plane or car, remember there are fools out there who can take your life or that of a loved one in a blink of an eye.
To those members who are venturing down to my neck of the woods (Mandurah) I hope that you catch a good feed of the local crabs and enjoy the fishing that is available. Having a try at the local artificial reef has the potential to turn up quite a bit of a surprise for you.
I'm sorry to end this Christmas wish with a bit of advise, however what I witnessed at my local free launching ramp demands telling here.
How not to get help from the locals.
First event 0630, forty knot Freddy I'll call him with 3 of his crusty crew approaches the ramp at what looked like 40 knots plus in his super butte 5m plate boat. Ramp approach from estuary is restricted to 5 knots. Anyway 2 metres from the ramp Freddy throws his 150 hp power train into reverse and creates a massive wave that just about sinks a 12ft tinnie at the launching jetty.
Freddy then in a loud abrasive voice announces to all within 100 metres that the crabs are that thick he caught his boat limit of forty before he and his crew had time to finish their slab of VB and how great it is to holiday in this place.
Case number 2.
Braggart Bob I'll call this bloke arrives at the ramp to launch his magnificent 8m + floating gin palace that had a fore deck that would put the USS Ronald Regan (CVN76) to shame.
Just how he planned to fish or crab of such a boat is beyond me however. One of the locals walks up to Bob and trys to explain to him that the ramp might prevent his launching of his vessel due to its shallow ramp angle. Expletive loaded response from Bob " you locals try and rip us visitors off at every chance you get don't you, I'm not going to pay your outrageous fees to launch my boat again loaded with profanity. Bob trys to launch boat, boat becomes stuck on trainer as stern is wedged into bottom of estuary. Great amount of profanity directed at all and sundry for having such bloody awful launching facilities. Boat stuck on trailer, and can't be off loaded, 2 wheal drive Lexus, can't pull trailer and boat out of water ramp is covered with weed, oow dear what are we going to do. Hey all you locals give me a hand to get my car and boat out.
When I left he was shouting what a bunch of unfriendly people from Mandurah are, with expletives.
Have a great holiday good friends and remember your ramp etiquette.

Deep fryer
Submitted by Curndog on Sat, 2016-12-24 07:56Hi guys,
looking at buying a 5L deep fryer to whip up some battered fish and squid rings. The one I'm looking at is 1600W will this be sufficient? Only use it to cook seafood. Also if anyone has any tips on how long to fry the fish and rings for that would be great. Obviously I know it depends on how thick the fillets etc but really have no idea. Thanks !

Buying crays , fish etc , limits?
Submitted by quadfisher on Fri, 2016-12-23 07:05gday , just talking to some work mates ( non fishos) about the cash for crays scheme, pros selling to the public , trial just announced and some questions came up .( YES I AM WORKING OVER XMAS, SO HUMOUR ME)
The questions are , do cray and fish possession limits apply if your purchasing fish , ie
if I decide to buy 50 crays over xmas and have them at home , whats the go if somehow inspected?
Or if I legally catch say 10 crays , and have them at home , can I go buy say another 20 crays , and keep them in there too?
Or if I buy 41 kgs of fish fillets and have them in the freezer , is that a breach?
I know some will say , as long as you have a reicept or something , you would be fine , but wheres the legal req to keep such a receipt.?
thoughts?

Yesterday's Banger
Submitted by sea-kem on Thu, 2016-12-22 14:55 Headed out into the 20's again but no takers with just pickers so headed to a spot I hadn't fished in a while, it was 12.30 and had been on the water for two hours without a fish in the kill tank. 5 mins into the drift and bang got this boy, 5 mins later deckie had his wife. My boy then nailed a cranking Baldy to top off the day. 12 crays in the pots rounded everything off nicely, beers went down a treat at the filleting table. He came in a smick over 11kg but my mate who was 100m away pipped me by 1.5kg on a bigger model. Great day on the water.

Shark fishing on swimming beaches
Submitted by Troyboy on Thu, 2016-12-22 14:27Hello, I just thought I'd ask for people's opinions and if anyone on FW saw old mate who pulled in the two Tigers at Floreat beach the other day and if so what you thought of the situation? It's hard to get a picture of what actually happened after the media gets hold of it, that's why I'm asking.
Obviously I'm on this page because I love fishing and nothing against shark fishing at all but I mean I think it's one of those things where there's a time and place. When you're wearing an equalizer harness, using a game outfit at a popular swimming beach maybe you're pushing it a bit hard? Not good for the image of the sport if little timmy gets eaten because someone's attracting Bruce with a slab of meat.
Have a merry Christmas anyway, hopefully the weather is half ok!
