Dhufish Length Measurement
Submitted by Tom M on Mon, 2016-12-12 08:18A discussion with a friend on the weekend about fisheries commenting to a fisherman last week on the rules for measuring Dhufish, fisheries guy says that the Dhufish is to be measured from the top lip, not from the point of the fish. Somewhat confusing giving that in the Recreational Fishing Guide page 8 states otherwise as below.
Size limits To check if your catch is of a legal size, measure finfish from the point of the snout to the tip of the tail.
Anyone want to comment on this, or had any experience with fisheries?

Rock Lobster Licence- Do you just add it to your Recreational Fishing Licence?
Submitted by Moking on Sun, 2016-12-11 13:21I've looked online and not sure about this and can't get online to Fisheries.
I'm going to get a Rock Lobster Licence(haven't had/got one) . Do you just get it added to "Specified Activities" on your Recreational Fishing Licence,or do you have to apply for separate Rock Lobster Licence?
And carry two separate Licences?
Thanks.

A danger.
Submitted by Deckie on Sun, 2016-12-11 09:53Just a quick message to those who persist in dropping their cray pots in the North or South leaders out of Ocean Reef and Hillarys marinas.
PLEASE DONT...
As member of Sea Rescue, it makes our job even more difficult when we have to negotiate around cray floats to get to a vessel in need of assistance.
The main purpose of having the leaders is to ensure a SAFE entry and exit from the marinas to clear water beyond the reef system.
When we are travelling into the sun from these marinas to assist someone, the floats are extremely hard to pick up in the glare on the ocean.
The last thing we and the owners of the distressed vessel need, is a delay due to having ropes around the props.
So please, if you are or know of anyone dropping pots in these areas, please find another spot.
After all, one day you maybe the one that is waiting for us to untangle the ropes.
Thank you, a happy and safe christmas to you all.....

Do tailor eat other tailor?
Submitted by lachieH on Sat, 2016-12-10 18:48I was thinking back to salmon season and I remembered that I caught a tailor as a bycatch while throwing lures over a reef looking for salmon stragglers. I was using a McCarthy 6 inch paddletail in the white pearl colour which I would imagine looks identical to a juvenile tailor? i know that trout will eat other trout but do tailor eat other tailor?
thanks,
Lachie

Boat sun protection
Submitted by Kakkerlak on Sat, 2016-12-10 16:21Recently got turned down by council to build a carport for my boat. Was wondering if a good boat cover will keep the gell coat and boat in general in a good condition. It gets very hot in my front yard and even under the cover the heat is intense. Was wondering what everyone else do with a similar issue?

Couple of sounder pics- Mandurah Artificial Reef
Submitted by kirky79 on Sat, 2016-12-10 15:55Hi FWer's
Went out Thursday to check the pots and get a feed of Whiting. Got our first 4 Whites then run out to the Whiting Patch and got a bag of Whiting pretty quickly. Was early and the day was getting better. So a quick search for the co ords for the new artificial reef and we were on our way. This is how they come up on my 587. As you can see I didn't bother zooming in on them.
We also got out in my Bro in Laws boat about a month ago. He has a Hummingbird 917. Seemed like they were holding a lot more bait that day
Got one little Shark and a couple of baby Pinkies, we also had a small school of Big Pilchard like fish come around put 2 down live but no luck. Sorry don't know how to straighten photos
Cheers Chris

Submitted by pelagicyachts on Fri, 2016-12-09 08:02Cool - there must be a bit of steel infrastructure lying around post mining downturn that could be sunk offshore too!
Location to be a secret - somewhere between rotto and garden island - at 12.5m tall it wont be too hard to find! :-)

Harvey Estuary Boat Ramps
Submitted by CD on Wed, 2016-12-07 19:27Hi All
I'm hoping some of the members on here can help me out. The company that I work for is completing a planning study on the two boat ramps on the eastern shoreline of the Harvey Estuary. The boat ramps are on Heron Point Road and Birch Drive. I am interested to know if anyone on here uses those ramps, and if so, where they travel from to use them and how busy they get?
There are obvious issues with the ramps (such as water depth) but ultimately we are trying to determine if there is any justification for significant upgrades. Hopefully some of the users will have a view on this. Feel free to provide any other comments that you have - any information is appreciated.
thanks

gauges
Submitted by wez0062 on Wed, 2016-12-07 15:37one for the Tech Heads.
I have a 200hp ETECH, 2014 YOM on my boat. So the question is, is it possible to replace the factory gauges, with something like an IPad, or similar.
I know ( or think I know) that you can sometimes run or hook them up to your GPS / fish finder, but I really want just a new style of gauge, more modern digital looking display, rather than the standard 2 round gauges.
Or am I just dreaming ??
thanks in advance

boat transfer
Submitted by Shane O on Wed, 2016-12-07 15:28When you sell your boat and trailer or jetski, do you need to fill out a seperate form for the trailer? If yes what value do you put for the trailer, would it be the whole amount you sold the vessel for? Or just a small amount for the trailer, the transfer forms for the boat has no value on it??

Salt Flake Ice
Submitted by Shore Catch on Wed, 2016-12-07 11:31After appropriate testing, Shore Catch is happy to advise retail availability of salt flake ice from our Showroom in Wangara. Salted ice has been used in the commercial fishing industry for years because of its properties.
- It lasts longer. Salted ice definitely lasts longer than regular ice made solely of fresh water and frozen at 0 degrees in cube form. There is good science around this point.
- Being in flake form, the salted ice packs closely around the fish, bait or other frozen/cold storage products and then “sets” to provide a low temperature “seal”.
- The product chill rate is higher, due to the larger surface area of the flake ice and the colder temperature produced by it, thus it improves preservation.
- As it slowly melts, a 5% salt brine is produced to further preserve biological material in the short to medium term.
The product is manufactured in Perth WA by The Salty Fisherman. The Salty Fisherman’s ice is a defined mixture of salt brine and filtered water, frozen between -5 and -6 degrees and shaved into small flakes (see photo).

The ice cost is $6 per 5kg bag or 3 for $15. Given that you use less as it lasts longer, and it preserves your products much better than the servo ice, it is a small price to pay for a high quality product – think of the value of the goods it is preserving. The product is certainly complimentary to our specialist bait and burley products and we are proud to be Perth’s first retail stockist of a product that has plenty of benefits to the recreational fisher.

Fads west of rotto
Submitted by Andyroo on Tue, 2016-12-06 17:05Afternoon gents. Been fishing around the west for a few years now, but this Sunday we are hoping to head out to the fads for the first time. Noticed some interesting area around 20kms west of rotto while playing around with Navionics on the iPad.
Suppose my question is, what can we expect and tips for fishing the area.
Will be trolling hard lures and skirts, and also drifting using fresh whole whiting/herring and fillets plus fresh squid
any info is appreciated .
Oh and boat is 28ft Whitley. Cheers

Mindarie carpark trailer damage
Submitted by Shogun on Tue, 2016-12-06 16:14Hey All,
Went out for a few hours this morning and came back to find my boat trailer had been sideswiped by some nice individual. A kindly note was left the windscreen of my green GQ Patrol by a person named Mick saying sorry.
This nice fella left his mobile number with one diget missing - honest mistake Yu recon?
Anyway was wondering if anybody may have seen it happen as it would have been between 8am to 1100am today Tuesday 6 December.
cheers

Albany 16th Dec - 3rd jan
Submitted by jayce on Tue, 2016-12-06 14:21Hi Guys
Im heading down to Albany for 3 weeks over christmas. Will be my 1st year down there since selling the boat so if anyone is looking for a deckie hit me up.
Have all my own gear for everthing except superdeep at the shelf (will still give it a go with jigs on manual wind but).
Have a few spots off there not super reliable but and i know where to always catch a feed of squid.
Happy to split fuel / ice and more than happy to help clean the boat. and like to keep the boat clean through out the day while fishing.
Will supply beers for the day if you like to have one while fishing. Have a skippers ticket fishing license and a bit of knowledge in the area.
If your into shooting i am more than happy to return the favour with a couple nights out the paddocks shooting foxs when i get home from christmas break.
Posted in fishing buddies aswell but doesnt get much publicity down there.
Cheers Jayce
The Cut - Herring
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2016-12-06 12:38The Cut Herring fishing area on the north side near the marina is on my way home from work. What I have noticed is that it is empty every night/arvo for the last month when previously it was always packed.
Has the hezza's deserted this area. It appears that more people are fishing the southern estuary side of the cut which traditionally has been better for tailor, but in the twilight hours.
Just has me perplexed about what is going on.
Has anyone got any information.
