Current

Was out past direction bank yesterday and around 11 no wind but the current was ripping. Drifting over a knot, couldn't hold bottom and the fish shut down.

Anyone else out there yesterday experience this?

Does the current tend to shut down the fish or was this just coincidence?

Was a magic day on the water none the less

2014 Etec blowing fuses...any idea?

 I've got a 130 etec

only a year old, and over easter I noticed my batteries were a little on the low end of charge..so I replaced one with a mates battery which was brand new as it was Easter Sunday and nothing was open

anyway, fished a whole day and was all good then halfway through the next day I lost my smart gauges and my engine wouldn't re start once switched off, but I had plenty of battery charge...deck wash still working as were all my electronics...but once the engine was turned on, the fuse in the top of the engine would blow but I could keep running the motor, but i lost the use of electric tilt

one of my deckies suspected it to be blowing a fuse (which is linked to my starter motor and smart guages, and located on top of the engine under the cowling next to the flywheel) because the engine is trying to pump amps/charge into the battery in the bank that is too low to receive charge..

ive taken to my mechanic and he is a bit stumped for now until he gets a second opinion

my question is...does anyone have an opinion on this issue? Has it happened before to anyone?

i think it's battery related which have now both been changed but am not an overly mechanical person someones like to know what some others may think?

cheers jess

ohh what a day to be on the ocean

left hillarys with Gareth for the salmon, first cast was a beautiful big salmon on the roughest home made popper you could imagine, we caught a few more but it was slow, we put the pick down and backed onto a reef , n/easterly no swell, heaps of bait around, started the burly and it started to get going, big skippys salmon on bait, poppers, s/plastics enough to atracked a few boats into the area, picked a few more up trolling and casting s/plastics and twistys, at one stage the reef exploded with jumping salmon, amazing sight, couldn't get a photo as we were both hooked up! then a brillant run home, great day

Salmon for $65.00 dollars each at Rockingham Jetty!

The Salmon were running this afternoon and word got around quickly,as these photo's show:

And why $65.00 for a salmon in Rockingham...........Because that's what it cost to park close to the Jetty!

Penn Reel Parts

Needed to replace the line roller bearing in one of my Penn reels so with the reel in hand, I trundled up to my local tackle store.

Ask the chap behind the counter and he said no mate, we don't do that any more, however if 'I' wanted to go online and obtain the specific part number he might be able to help me then.

Fark that, came home, looked up the schematic, found the part number, found it online in the US and had had it arrive today (6 days total between placing the order and receiving it) all for $9.36 US postage.

Anyone interested in Penn parts then I'd highly recommend Scotts Bait and Tackle in the US.

Beware of SEAWEED! Outboard fire can be the result

 Hi All

Just a FYI, my outboard (2004 75hp, Mercury 4 stroke) caught fire the other day, the only issue I can put it down to is seaweed.

We were heading home after a day spearing the bank, I power over a clump of seaweed and momentarily the outboard note changed a little. Thinking nothing of it I continued on. About 1 minute later, the boat jerked a little, concerned, I ease off the throttle and turn the motor off. I tilt the motor up and notice seaweed come away from the leg, I am unsure if it was around the prop or the front of the leg (I presume around the leg covering the water intake)

Then I notice what I thought was a little steam coming out of the cover, I smell the 'steam', then realise it was a burning rubber smell. I tell my deckies to remove the cover while I look for the extinguisher in the bow. They pop the cover off, and sure enough there is a small fire at the front of the engine closest to the boat. We put the fire out and the power was cut the motor. So we call Rockingham Sea rescue and they tow us in and we gave them a donation ($100) as thanks.

Since I have NO IDEA about outboards, what is likely to be the result of the fire, overheating? motor ceased up?

Also, what is the likely repair cost on the motor?

Red pig fishing reels

Has anyone heard of these Red Pig fishing reels and any comments or experience with them?

Most surprise fish catch

I just posted on another post a big surprise when we caught big reds in a drop off ranging from 8-12m. Was a stellar day with 6 reds landed, all in the 8-10kg range. The limit was already reached when we caught the biggest 2 but felt good to release them anyway. Also had 2 trout one 70 and the other 82 in the esky. We were targetting snapper in the spot as we previously named it Snapper City because you were bound to get a feed there. Went back a few times but never saw a red there again. Also the trout and reds came up at dusk which also surprised me, especially the trout as they go to bed at night.

Also caught a Mangrove Jack at 52cm in 60m of water with no land in sight, aswell as a legal Barra at the back of Rosemary Island in 40m. Thought it was a sandbass initially, but common sense soon prevailed.

Down south caught a nice size Skippy in Bassendean chasing Bream. Sailfish hooked not landed near the chicken run off Rotto.

Not to many weird ones for me, but Im sure there is some very unusual captures.

Gummy Sharks, Cockburn Sound

Hi Guys,

I am hoping to hit Cockburn Sound on late Friday afternoon into the evening to try and loose my Gummy Shark virginity. any pointers on where I should fish and what bait would be most appreciated.

Bundegi sanctuary zone

Heading up to Exmouth soon, and am keen to fish the gulf, weather  permitting. I wouldn'tlove to chase some queenies and trevs at the flats. I've just had a look on one of the  maps that I've got of the area, and it shows that its a sanctuary zone.  Is it a sanctuary zone and not fishable, or are my map reading skills rubbish?

Cheers Fab

Nanga Bay Whiting help

 G'day Guys

After some help in chasing whiting in the Nanga bay area. The wind is blowing from the ESE all morning up here so been sticking close to the shore and have had no sucess getting the famous Shark Bay whiting.

We have scored some babies from the beach but if anybody has any tips on depth for the bigger ones it would be appreciated. The sand/weed beds are from 2-5m in the south area where we have been going.

Needing help with fishing out of Mindarie

hi everybody, I recently brought a boat and have been taking my son out for some offshore fishing. Living in Merriwa it's easy to drop the boat in at Mindarie and head out.. We have been out behind the 3nm outer reefs and steggies about 4 times now and have come home without catching anything?? We both have boat rods and I make up paternosca rigs which I copied from the charters we have been on previously and bait wise I have gone through plenty of different colours, sizes and styles of soft plastics .. Am I fishing in the wrong spots ? Is it my rigs or bait choice ?? Any advice would be very appreciated... Thanks

Game Fishing Indonesia

Hi, my other half has hassled me for years to go to Bali which I've managed to fend off, now she wants to go to Lombok in November. Has anybody game fished anywhere near there?, I wouldn't mind having a crack at some Dog tooth or anything really, maybe a night or two trip. Any ideas?

Salmon Holes Name Change - Response From DPaW

Just in case anyone is interested, I received this email from the Department of Parks And Wildlife in response to the name change suggestion. My response back to them is copied below.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your email regarding the Salmon Holes. The weekend’s events were both tragic and also exasperating given the level of work undertaken by Parks & Wildlife in conjunction with Recfish West, the Albany Sea Rescue group and others to warn of the dangers of rock fishing at this site. Over the Easter period there was a major collaborative operation to manage the site, with particular emphasis on safety, but despite this one person did end up in the water and was fortunately was rescued. It was also noted that while a small number of fishers tied themselves on to the rock anchors very few people accepted the offer of a free loan of life vests.

Following the death of one of the fishermen and the presumed loss of the second last weekend there are a number of suggestions as to what further actions could be taken to prevent such tragedies, including yours of renaming the site. This has been considered in the past by Parks & Wildlife and others but it is not thought that a name change will have a major positive influence on people’s behavior. It would be great if it were as simple as that. One of the strategies employed over Easter at the Salmon Holes was to provide maps of other beach fishing locations around Albany where salmon could be caught to try and direct people to safer locations and reduce any belief that the Salmon Holes was the only place these fish could be caught.

With the assistance of UWA a survey of fishers was conducted over the Easter weekend to assist in improving the understanding of their fishing experience, knowledge and awareness of the ocean and risks, swimming ability, understanding of the risk signage and use of safety devices – the results of this survey are yet to be finalised but they may give an insight into what further can be done at the Salmon Holes to ensure visitor safety.

The risk warning signs at the Salmon Holes are in the English language but carry both pictograms and the international danger symbol – while it could be claimed that the level of public awareness and signage is not effective at the end of the day it is people’s own decisions, actions and responsibility for their behavior which will dictate the level of risk that they will place themselves in. The Salmon Holes can be fished quite safely – from the beach.

Your email and concern for the dangers at the Salmon Holes is appreciated.

Regards
Greg

Hi Greg, I hear everything you are saying but I still think the point is being missed. I have spoken to a legal firm today who specialize in public liability claims and they also feel there is a potential issue here.

It’s a contradiction to put warning signs up all over the place but to give the location a name that clearly suggests the fishing is good.

Despite the warning signs, a visitor unfamiliar with the area (especially overseas visitors) might quite understandably draw the conclusion that it can’t be THAT dangerous if it’s called the Salmon Holes. It’s practically an invitation to go and fish there.

“It is not thought a name change would have a major positive influence on people’s behaviour” – Really? , whose opinion was that? I think you’ll find there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that the name of a place or product will have a significant influence on people’s behaviour in relation to it. In fact, there is an entire, multi-billion dollar industry that specializes in just this – it’s called marketing.

Besides which, have you got any better ideas? At this point it seems not.

I’m not suggesting a name change will offer a 100% guaranteed solution. I, and plenty of others, are of the opinion that when it comes to saving a life, it’s worth a try.

Anyway, as is so often the case, money often calls the shots in cases like this.

With that in mind, you will be interested to know that the legal firm I spoke with suggested the family of a drowning victim could be allowed to pursue a liability case on the grounds that the name of the location encouraged the victim to engage in an activity that was known not to be safe. These are their words, not mine.

As they pointed out, it’s a bit like having a road down to a cliff with a sheer edge. There are warning signs all the way along it telling people not to go near the edge but the place has been named “Wonderful View”.

I think they were using an extreme example to try and get the point across but I assume you can see how the principle applies to “Salmon Holes”.

Anyway, I’ll leave this with you.

Regards,

Paul.

Robinson Sea Bream / Red Emperor

Hi Guys,

Last year I headed up to Exmouth in July for the first time with the boat in tow. Without knowing any specific locations to fish we just headed out from tantibiddi and sounded around to try and find some ground. We managed to find some gently sloping ground in around 50m to 60m that produced a few good sized robinson sea bream along with some big spangled emperor and quiet a few trevally that became a pain in the backside.

I am heading up again this year in June and am looking to catch my first red emperor.

My question is, am I fishing the right ground to catch red emperor if I am catching these other fish or should I be looking for something else?

Any feedback is welcome!

Salmon Holes --> Dead Mans Rocks name change

This was suggested by another member (credit to TryMyLuck). The more I think about it the more this makes sense. I've just written to Albany council, The Saturday West, The Sunday Times and The Albany Advertiser to put the suggestion forward. Anyone else fancy contacting them? Warning signs clearly aren't working. Perhaps changing the name from something that positively encourages visitors to put their lives at risk there to something that gives a true impression of how dangerous it is would make a difference. A long shot maybe, but surely worth a try.

Salmon Holes Strikes Again

One dead, one missing. RIP.

It's got to be the most publicised dangerous place to fish in WA. Warning signs everywhere and people are still killing themselves there.

Last time I was on the rocks there I was tied on, had a self inflating life jacket on, rockhopper boots and an epirb on my belt. It was fairly flat and I felt a bit embarrassed next to the two rough looking bikie types next to me in shorts, singlets and thongs. They could obviously swim a lot better than me...

Feelings go out to the families. It's just not worth risking your life for a fish.
