More swan river lizards
Submitted by BGR on Wed, 2012-12-05 13:15Started out at South Perth and skated/ fished our way along the river until we reached the Canning Bridge. Managed to pick up 7 in total between myself and two mates with only one under 40cm and I was pretty happy to have caught the two largest both around the 55cm mark, one after the other. One of the guys doesn't fish and borrowed some of my gear managing to pick his first ever fish in the river, just under 45 cm flathead on soft plastics is not a bad way open the account.
All fish were taken on 3" shad soft plastics and I was fishing my 2-5 kg custom rod with a Abu Garcia Soron STX.
I reckon it was some of the best weather you could hope for when fishing the flats, light easterly blowing and nice 30+ temp. One of the better days metro fishing I have had with all fish returned to fight another day. Yew.

Land Based Ray
Submitted by snapper_seeker on Mon, 2012-12-03 07:02Caught this Ray at a secret location on a whiting frame it took some great runs of aproximately 80 metres but it tired pretty quick, it was about a 10 minute fight. I saw him swimming in the shallows so i quickly rigged up and casted the snelled whiting right in front of his nose and he inhaled it. I love sight
casting to rays in the shallows. The whole fight was completely visual.

Had some huge kingys and sambos come in for a look and even had a small turtle come up off the bottom, didn't think turtles came that far south??

Alien Invasion
Submitted by YellowSubmarine on Tue, 2012-11-20 18:48Caught this last month just before the demersal ban started, been meaning to post since. Thought I'd snagged a large clump of weed as I was winding up.
First cuttlefish I've ever caught but apparently its a biggun. Such a freaky looking beast.
Whole lotta a-grade bait right there.

thankyou oceanside
Submitted by joe amato on Mon, 2012-11-12 22:38i went into oceanside to pick up my things i ordered, i had my cousin with me from italy for the first time, i asked mike to show him some pictures of bass gropers that ryan and staff had caught in the past. when he showed him, my cousin had no idea fish grew that big, it was so funny because all he could say was wooow, after seeing this mike was a very generous, and gave my cousin maurizio a promotional mini dvd, plus nolder copy of western angler, which made my cousin so happy after his previous captue of trout, plus he was so excited after seeing dolphins, pelicans plus also been taught how to catch scalies, but was in disbelief of the amount of scalies which myself plus good m8 frank had taught him to catch yesterday morning. also he couldnt believe we use them for bait and dont eat them, but anyway thankyou oceanside and my mate frank

Todays Effort
Submitted by Fossil on Thu, 2012-11-08 16:26Picked these up today in the river. All came on an SX-40. Yes even the whiting was on the SX-40, in fact it was the very first cast I put out for the day. Lost a second smaller (not by much) whiting as I lifted it from the water. My partner in crime for the morning cracked it for a 45cm flatty as well but I'll leave him to post up pictures of that if he wants to after I've emailed them to him later.

pb bream while after tailor
Submitted by hookedon on Wed, 2012-11-07 20:55after a week of crappy weather and then a break from it on tuesday i decided on a last moment to go for a flick down at the narrows as the tide was to finish coming in pretty early (12 30) i thought it would be a good night to try for a mulloway plan was to bait cast some half mulies to get some tailor then use that as live bait for the mulla how eva the tailor wernt playing the game and got none. i was down to the dregs of my bait gave the cast out the blowies started smashing the bait but i slowly wound it in and then all of a sudden wham my 2kg line started peeling of my reel and nearly spooled me a run much like a salmon (straight lines and big head shakes) and after about 5 minutes i seen it 1st thought was a small mulla then i realised a massive bream with an awsome bronze shimmer in the light i was stoked didnt get any tailor or mulla that night but am happy as a pig in shit it measured 45cm and weighed 1.4kg beat my pb by 5cm and about 300gms

Bream on plastics
Submitted by SandGroper84 on Mon, 2012-11-05 10:24Gday members, been a while since my last post, but thought id share a couple photos of fish that ive caught over the past 2 weeks. Both fish were caught under canning bridge on the raffles side of canning river.
First fish was caught using a Zman 2.5" grub in bloodworm with a 1g squidgy jighead cast at the pylons in around 1m of water with a slow retrieve, the fish hit solid and straight away tried to get me back into her home, with some crazy rod work, a couple hand breaks to the spool and a few pirouette's the fish gave up and I had won the prize! she pulled the tape out to 43cm (fork length) was a girthy fish as well, after a few photos the fish was released to make another anglers day. time of capture was around midday and was slack tide.
The second fish was caught using my go to plastic, a 2" snapback in motor oil with again a 1g squidgy jighead, this time the fish was caught casting out on the flats into the running tide on the edge of a weed bed, I was not working the plastic at the time as I was removing a wind knot from my braid, I had only just got the knot out when the stella started screaming, the fish took off away from the bridge before deciding that home wasnt out in the open and doubled back quick smart and had me snagged around a pylon before I could blink... it wasnt over yet though, still able to feel the fish on the other end I backed my drag off and started to walk out towards the pylon that I was snagged up on, I got to within a metre on the pylon when I spotted the fish and she must of seen me too, she unsnagged herself and gave up, I grabbed my leader about 2 feet away from the fish, which was lucky I did, because a second or 2 later my leader completely parted where it had been snagged up around the pylon, I lead the fish to shore and put the tape on her, another 43cm (fork length) bream, this fish was nowhere near as girthy as the other fish, but put up a much more exciting fight, after a couple quick photos and quick swim of the fish she swam off strongly, time of day was around mid morning (9-10am) and the tide was pushing out hard.
Tackle used was berkley crystal line in 4lb and sunline leader in 4lb on a stella 1000fd and shimano tcurve tournament.
These are just the 2 40cm+ fish I have landed, on average ill get around 20 fish per trip, most around the 20-35cm range and with some serious unstoppables, hope you enjoy the write up guys and girls and get some useful info from it.
Regards Matt

Exmouth trip - big dolphin fish
Submitted by catch.fish on Wed, 2012-10-31 18:26Hey guys, just got back from two days fishing off Exmouth with Josh from Onstrike! Had awesome weather and plenty of action, catching and releasing all sorts of fish over the two days. Got some nice queenies, shark macks, spanish macks and dolphin fish.
On the last day decided to try for a big marlin so we trolled for most of the afternoon with no luck but right as we contemplated giving up and heading in out of nowhere this big blue came flying in bill and fins right out of the water waving around. It smashed the lure and dissapeared with the reel screaming. We where on, finally!
I grabbed the rod and held on for a blistering first run, in the distance we could see a good size marlin getting airborn followed by another big fish jumping all over the place right near it. After 10 mins or so it dove deep and we didnt see it jump again for the next 20 mins or so as I slowly began to regain some line.
After a good fight I finally had it in close, Josh had the tagging pole out and as we finally saw some colour we couldnt believe our eyes. Somehow I was now connected to a horse of a dolphin fish - the marlin was nowhere to be seen!! No idea how that happened as all of us on the boat watched the Marlin come in and nail the lure with our own eyes - only explanation is that the dolly somehow smashed it out of its mouth or beat it to the strike by a split second without us seeing!
So no Marlin this time but was stoked with the size of this dolphin fish, pics dont quite do it justice! Cameras where all out of battery so had to snap a quick shot with an iphone.
Definitely an unusual way to cap off an awesome couple of days fishing.
