Advise for buying 1st fiberglass boat
Submitted by roddo on Mon, 2020-01-13 17:29Hi all
Well it's time to buy another boat as our round Aus trip has finished and I'm missing having a decent sized boat.
I'm looking at an older 80s model baron fiberglass boat that looks in great condition has the odd crack in the gel coat but appears nothing serious any advise on what I should be looking for my last boats have been plate ally. I cant feel any spongyness in the floor it has a pod conversion already which looks pretty good. Some of the cracks in the gel coat are on the underside possibly caused from the trailer is this common on fiberglass boats that have not had the trailer setup properly and is it anything to be concerned about

Deck or fishing platform for a Stessco Skipper 420
Submitted by warralakin13 on Mon, 2020-01-13 14:33Hi All,
I have recently purchased a Stessco Skipper 420 and was wondering if anyone had ever built a deck/fishing platform to go over the bench seat at the back and cover over the open deck area between the motor and transom?
I feel like it would be a good way to get more deck space quickly and also make it easier to enter the boat.
cheers,
Luke

Dual Battery Switch - SOLVED
Submitted by Darren253 on Mon, 2020-01-13 09:44Guys, It looks like I’m having my second dual battery switch failure in just over 2.5 years.
The first one lost its spring/locking position after 18months (ebay) so I replaced it with one of these from whitworths. https://www.whitworths.com.au/sw-batt-compact-4pos
I thought I had killed a battery but after a bit of testing and swapping batteries, it is the switch (again).
I removed, cleaned and ensured all connectors were tight and no interference.
- Could it be because I have it mounted upside down? (Dial pointing at the floor)
- Do these corrode and should I try and take it apart to clean up the contacts? It’s the least used battery that is not working?
- Should I ditch the 1+2 type of selectors and go for individual isolators?
(Added info) Yesterday I temporally swapped battery 2 for battery 1 (batt 2 wouldn’t crank originally) and batt 2 started my motor 6 times in a row with a struggle (in position 1). The other previously perfect battery 1 wouldnt crank on the second circuit (position 2) either which brought me to the switch. Both batterys have ample power to crank the motor on position 1.
When I initially thought it was a dud battery I took it (batt 2) for a load test and it came back at 99% capacity so all good! Checked all cables and connections so can only be the internal of the selector switch now... (I think?)

New boat
Submitted by Sea goat on Sat, 2020-01-11 07:58Hi guys.
i will be expecting delivery of my new boat in a little over a months time. I have been doing a lot of thinking about how to set it up as I hope to be able to be capable of taking it to some more remote places, and doing some more extended trips. It’s a 6.4m Caribbean reef runner, and should arrive by end of feb. unfortunately I am not in a position to do the work myself, and am not keen to use the new toy as a learning experience!
Engine being fitted by aqua sports marine, and stereo, radio bilge and some lighting will be done by Mansfield marine, but i was hoping people could give some recommendations as to where to head for advice and installation of the following.
1) sounders, transducers and installatio
2) electrics, battery set up, lighting etc
3) custom covers, storm covers etc
Anything else?
i have a few ideas based on my research but really need to talk to the people in the know about getting it done etc. I am planning to invest a bit getting everything done as would like to make sure it’s done right the first time, so if you have had any good experiences I would be very keen to hear.
thanks heaps..... getting a bit excited!

Engine extension cover !!
Submitted by Paul200990 on Thu, 2020-01-09 20:09Gday guys,
another question from me. Looks like all I do is post on here for advice and questions.
looking at a boat with a 200 Honda in it but having a look at its engine extentikn cowling, it seems that it's been forced open and is a bit warped where it joins in the middle. Could this be a big people from salt getting in there and possibly not being flushed or cleaned correctly.
as attached is a pic of then engine and it's not the best pic but you can sorta see what I'm talking about.

New Trailer
Submitted by Browndog on Fri, 2020-01-03 19:52Hi FW Crew.
I'm looking at purchasing a used fibreglass boat, around 7.5m length, but the trailer it's on is pretty much kaput. I know I've seen recent posts on Tezzas Trailers and the like, but can't seem to use the search function to look them up.
Anyone got a ballpark price on a new 3.5t rated trailer, either ally or C section galvanised? Just need to factor in to my sums so I know if it's worth making an offer.
Cheers all.
BD.

Engine Warranty - 30hp Etec
Submitted by Work to Fish on Thu, 2020-01-02 11:22Hi Guys, I have a question about what's covered under new engine warranty - I purchased a new 30hp e-tec in Feb 2017 and it's covered by a 3 year (or 300hr) warranty.
I have noticed a build-up of salt crystals on the what I think is the cooling manifold - photos attached.
Presumably this was caused by a leaking gasket? If so, would this likely be covered under warranty?
I have tried calling the 4 e-tec reps in WA and all are closed until Monday, so was hoping someone could let me know (from experience) whether or not this is likely to be covered - either way, it's got to be fixed.
Cheers
Shane

Milky grease in Bearings
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2019-12-29 14:50Was due to take the boat to Mandurah and checked the hubs and one of them has milky grease after having done them in Sep. Thinking it's time to replace the 5y old bearing buddies.
Decided to leave it at home as I didn't have time to put my spare hub on but should I replace the bearings or repack them?

Outboard Flushing
Submitted by Leon58 on Sun, 2019-12-29 08:52Looking at a 2016 Caribbean reef runner with a 150 hp Honda outboard,He’s had it moored in a bay in Sydney for about 3 years taking out yearly to be serviced and anti fould, the outboard done 176 hours, I asked him how he got on flushing the moter out after every trip he replied he’s never flushed it out said don’t need to on the newer Honda’s and got told by the mob that services his boat that. I think it’s a load of bullshit. Any Thoughts??

!!Ally boat builder Needed!!
Submitted by Paul200990 on Wed, 2019-12-25 10:20needing a welder/ally boat builder to do an inspection on my boat for insurance purposes. I know it’s Christmas time
but really could use a favour off someone so I can get this claim accepted. Little crack in the hull after hitting something out wide :(
second pic is for the possible corrosion comments. Just dried salt. Abit of acid wash and it's gone.
added a couple pics of the hull after an acid hull clean for the guys that think there is corrosion. It was a quick one only took about 3 mins so wasn't a proper clean

Engine Vibration
Submitted by Bradmac73 on Fri, 2019-12-20 10:24
I have a Merc 175 2 stroke, 2006 model which runs perfectly at speed, idles perfectly, but vibrates like a mo fo when doing less than about 10 knots. Given it runs smoothly, I have (perhaps incorrectly) assumed it is either a drive line issue or something outside of an engine issue that is creating the vibration.
Has anyone had a similar issue, or ideas as to what to check?
cheers

Trailer washdown setup
Submitted by ranmar850 on Wed, 2019-12-18 21:58 I mentioned, in another thread a while ago, that I was going to build a setup to wash down the boat trailer without getting down on my knees with a hose EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
I've always been very particular, but it gets to be a lot of work when you are going out every day pulling pots. It took a bit longer than planned, but I've been using it for a while now, and it works well. I have the garden retic on a bore, which is good water, so I use that for pressure and volume for the wash underneath. It is buried in the driveway, 25mm pvc feeding those big stainless Raindrop sprinklers. Overhead, I'm just running three ordinary sprinklers on 12mm poly, from the garden hose, mounted on the carport. I have an inline fitting to inject saltaway or vinegar in to the feed for that.
So I reverse in until the utes' front wheels are up on the kerb. this puts the bottom sprinklers under the transom and the top sprinklers right over the rocket launcher. turn it all on, reverse in slowly until I hit the stops. Then the sides get a quick hose down, as well as the deck and outboard. job done. I've done a short video of it in action on Youtube--looks like it does a better job than you are likely to do with a hose.

Outboard flushing question
Submitted by Paul_86 on Mon, 2019-12-16 12:00G’day all,
Just got a question about flushing my outboard engine, it’s a Yamaha 2017 70HP 4 stroke, I always flush with decent muffs immediately after use for at least 5mins, up to 10mins, I notice a few days later tho that I’ve got some dry salt build up coming out of a hole on leg of the engine. Anyone know what this is from and how I can prevent it happening?
Cheers Paul

Wheel Hub Cone Removal
Submitted by SpotHound on Fri, 2019-12-13 21:30For the life of me I can't get the cones/cups/races or whatever you call them out of my hubs to change bearings.
I'm hitting it with a 1/2" mild steel rod and a 2 pound gympie hammer and they never move.
The hub is sitting on concrete.
Any tips?
Can I cahnge bearings without changing the cones?

are anodes needed/used on 11 foot dinghy
Submitted by Paul N on Tue, 2019-12-03 13:49I have just picked up a second hand aluminium dinghy to use as a cartopper when caravanning .There is a small amount of pitting in the aluminium but nothing too bad but was hoping to prevent any further deterioration . Having always had glass boats I was wondering if anyone uses sacrificial anodes on there dinghy . If so , where do you put them . Do they need to be placed below the waterline ( could be an issue on a small dinghy ) or would bolting one to a seat be as effective.
Any info would be appreciated .
Cheers
Paul
