Tailor fishing
Submitted by Troyboy on Wed, 2026-05-13 12:31G'day fishos, im trying to do a few more videos and give some useful advice as much of what i've learnt has come from this site and it's members, so over the next while i'll be doing some tutorials on some basic fishing techniques.
I've recently changed my landbased setup for a bit of a different approch (not a new style by any means) and that is a lighter combo with 20lb line and an 11" rod.
I chose my new rod specifically for Tailor and casting unweighted mulies (pilchards) and lures. Tailor are a great fish to target here in W.A. with fish on this type of equiptment giving a good fight. IMO fish from 30-40cm are the best eating size. some days i'll keep one others I release. I'm just chasing a new pb currently @65cm on bait but hoping for a 70 sometime soon.
So here's a short video of some recent action and if anyone has any advice for targetting bigger models in the metro area feel free to flick me a message.
And before anyone rips into me I know I need to work on my handling of the fish, don't wipe them, support the body at all times, wet the brag mat etc, just starting out on the catch and release thing and hey atleast these ones got a second chance I guess.
Tight lines!

Sub for more vids soon!
Rod-Assasin rapid spin 11" PE1.5-2
Reel-Diawa Saltist MQ 5000D-H
Line-20lb Tasline
Leader-60lb Sunline FC (just incase something large is hungry)
Hook-Single 7/0 J (I found this spot a bit too snaggy for gangs)
Tips for newbys
-Fish the bite times, high or low tide, sunrise, sunset etc.
-Use google maps to scope new spots
-less people=more fish (Do the miles get the smiles)
-hook exposure/bait presentation is a key
-Bait, fresh herring, and pilchards
-expereriment with different hooks sometimes I find the fish won't take a gang but will hit a single, more chance of snipoffs but no hookups=no fish. But I do always start with gangs.
-Bait Cotton
PS:If you know the spot keep it hush hush!
How quick can a fish get lit up?
Submitted by scuttlebutt on Fri, 2026-02-27 13:33Was going through some of my old videos - here's a little jack that I had eating some peeled prawn. What's interesting for me is how quickly those vertical fright-bars flash up. I've seen little marlin do the same thing. Amazing critters..
Flicking Fligs at Coral Bay - Chasing a Mainland Bonefish
Submitted by big john on Sat, 2025-01-25 09:25Gave Cocos a miss this summer and headed north with slugger chasing a mainland bonefish.
Plenty of fun to be had, even with our main quarry proving tricksy.

underwater footage of red emperor and trout
Submitted by scuttlebutt on Thu, 2024-12-26 17:40
Here's a little clip I took dropping a gopro in 60 metres off Cairns. You see a nice Coral trout take the bait and spit it out, then a Red Emperor around 8kg get hooked and come to the boat. Interesting to watch the shark hanging around too. Must have been just not confident enough on the day...

Pilbara Dinghy Missions
Submitted by OldMateAdventures on Wed, 2023-08-09 11:23We are currently working up in the sunny town of good ole Port Hedland for the winter (escape before the heat hits too hard as I'm getting a bit soft these days!).
Manage to finally get a nice day on the water on my days off and zoomed around the shallow reefs off the back of Finni Island in search of a feed.
Got smoked a few times on light gear and soon learnt my lesson that it's not a good idea to let anything have any line up here!
Still hoping to land one of these mystical BlueBone that I hear so much about so I'm going out rock crab hunting tomorrow to up my bait game and see how that goes!
Thanks for watching and will keep ya posted on my BlueBone Hunt....

Walpole Fishing Nornalup Inlet
Submitted by OldMateAdventures on Mon, 2023-05-22 08:01Hey there Team, Haven't posted a vid in awhile and on our annual migration up the west coast we finally had a couple of nice days at Walpole! Last few years everytime we get there it's blowing it's head off!!
Fished here as a kid every april school holz, magic place and love coming back. Didn't get into the rivers for Bream but managed a feed of good ole Hezza's and the next episode we got onto some KG's in the shallows.
I remeber the old man used to always take a couple of crab nets and we used to always end up with 1 or 2 monster Blueys from the mouth of the river, was good to still find one and wrangle it into the boat!
Thanks as always for watching and the support!

One Perfect Day
Submitted by big john on Fri, 2023-01-27 16:43Recently spent another two weeks product testing up at the magnificent Cocos Keeling Islands with my brother. Had a mixed bag of weather, but thankfully all fishable.
One morning I hit a flat not really knowing what to expect. It was a falling neap tide, with not a lot of movement, not the ideal scenario or so I thought. Funny how the fishing gods can have other plans.
All fish were caught sight casting to them, using a variety of my Fligs.
BTW, if you're running a Go Pro, I can highly recomment the Sandmarc CPL filter.

Bonefish on Crab Fligs
Submitted by big john on Wed, 2022-10-26 08:26Finally got some spare time to knock up a quick video of my second trip to Cocos Island chasing bonefish on spin tackle, this time using Crab Fligs.
Conditions overall were less than favourable but we still fired a few shots, I had planned to get the get the drone up to film some eats but the wind and rain put paid to that.
Heading back in January, with possibly another new product, and hopefully favourable conditions for sight casting and filming (drone).

Misso out guns me again
Submitted by OldMateAdventures on Sun, 2022-01-16 08:28We head south down to Augusta to give the new tinny for a run. Way way more stable than the old girl and almost the same weight. Going to look at fitting a small winch to the roof to make it a little easier to load and unload.
Kel managed to land a few whiting to start the journey off with the new tinny and we had a lovely feed of whiting that night.
Soon we head down the south coast close to the boarder and then start making our way back up slowly, any good spots south of walpole to the boarder is a must do/see/fish with either the Dinghy or beach fishing etc?
This year we'll be trekking most of the coast of W.A. full time, can't wait!!
Thanks for all the support team and hope everyone has a epic 2022 on the water!

Catching squid off Denham
Submitted by OldMateAdventures on Thu, 2021-12-09 08:42We get down to SharkBay area hoping to get into Big Lagoon but rain the day before stopped us from getting the van out that way so we lived it up in a caravan park for a couple of nights.
Anyone had much luck fishing the Big Lagoon area? Looked like a great spot and hopefully get in that way next year for a week or more.
Thanks as always for watching Team and hope everyone gets to wet a line over the Christmas break!

The ultimate backyard mega catamaran build
Submitted by Fathom on Mon, 2021-12-06 16:2232yrs ago Clyde E S (Tell him he's dreaming), started designing/engineering and building his own mega 100ft boat....by himself.....in California, 85miles from the ocean.
In 5yrs he had accomplished something I thought would most certainly be imposslble.
When completed he sawed it into 7 pieces, and in one day he loaded 7 trucks and headed for the coast.
Reckons he put it back together in the water in 6hrs.....???
Cant wait to see the rest of this famous build.
"Kaleidascope" is still in good nick doing charters in Mexico with new owners.

Lower Ord river Fishing and Camping
Submitted by OldMateAdventures on Sat, 2021-11-06 08:40Haven't posted on here for a while, it's been a hectic journey the past year, misso battling cancer (and beating it!) and making the decision to quit 9 to 5 life and packing up everything for life on the road! This is one of our more recent vids of our journey (misso out fishes me again!) on our first ever mission with our old 88 Viscount caravan we renovated we decided what better reccy run than to send it on a 8000km trek up the west coast and back.
The tip of our journey was Hairy Dogs Fishing camp down Parry Creek rd on the Lower Ord between Kunnunara and Whyndam where we stayed for a week. We met a mate up there also who bought his tinny along. We struggled to land any decent Barra until the day we booked onto a charter at the camp.
We had Jimmy who was a unreal guide and gave us all the tips and tricks on where we went wrong (should of done it first day!).
The heat pushed our gear and setup to the extreme and tested us all out but was unreal fun! Highly recommend the camp and or doing a charter with Greg and Janes team!
Thanks as always for watching!
