Around Oz Trip (so far) - Perth to Thredbo (pic heavy)
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sun, 2013-05-12 19:41G'day peeps
Been a while since I've posted here, thought it was about time I put up an update on my trip around Oz. This is a brief picture summary of the first month away, we covered from Perth to Thredbo skipping a lot of SA as we used to live there.
We've seen a fair bit of cool stuff and so far, touch wood, things have gone pretty well with the car and van. We hit a roo crossing the Nulla but damage was minimal, that's been about it thankfully.
Anyway I hope you enjoy the pics.
Cheers

Sounder and transducer advice/ opinions
Submitted by oz74 on Sun, 2013-05-12 18:37Hi all,
i know that there are a few threads already on sounders but I have a few other points to consider and am looking for info on people's experience.
i currently have two combo Lowrance units which I think are the LCX27c models- one which I use for sonar and one for the GPS. Good screen size and they are linked together as well so makes marking points, tracking etc pretty easy and provides some contingency if one craps itself.
but.... I am considering another separate sounder for some better performance. Currently I just have the standard 50/200 transducer and the first step is to upgrade this to a more powerful 1Kw- and is is where the questions start.
Current transducer is mounted externally, will I be able to keep this as well as another 1Kw transducer for a separate unit?
i am considering a thru hull transducer/s. Any precise positions that these need to be installed? Any idea of the size of the holes that need to be cut?
would you go for a thru hull or transom mount? It's just the size that puts me off hanging it off the back!
Lowrance or Furuno sounder- would consider the HDS8 or 10 or the Furuno 587 or 295 depending on cost? Anything to look out for if I mix current Lowrance transducer with one for a Furuno?
any other information or suggestions is also appreciated.
thanks
brett

Exxy Game Fishing adventure.
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Thu, 2013-05-09 21:25Hi all, just a little teaser for a few crew.
I have been back a few weeks since the Exxy adventure. Full report and pics to come. Just thought i would let you all know that the Marlin and Sailfish are on the go at the moment. As one would expect.
In 4 solid days of trolling out on the West side, we landed 13 billies and only dropped 3 others. (GoPro and pics of each for the doubters). The first few days it was mostly sails and then the opposite on the last two days. The weather for these days was really good and we were stocked at our hook up ratio. Most landed were a good size with one marlin in the 250kg range that bent the hook at the boat. There was plenty of Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and tuna to keep us interested in between the bills.
A big first for me so it was great experience.
As expected, the sharks were everywhere so our bottom fishing was limited to a few hours.
Just waiting on some pics and i will post the report.
If you where up that way two weeks ago, we were the boys in the 7mtr Leisure Cat. Pure heaven, my first time in a cat and i was so impressed.
Regards
Xtreme Dave

Land of sweet Liberty (pic heavy)
Submitted by sea-kem on Wed, 2013-05-08 17:31 Hi all, just thought I'd post a few pics from our recent trip to the US that I thought might interest you guys. We travelled to Dubai, New York,Washington (by train), Orlando and then back to New York. New York is insane and worth a visit just to see it in action. Any hour of the day or night is flat out. This first shot is from a quick cruise on The East river of the NYPD water section. Looks like they use Naiads too or something ver similar.
Saw this reel in the museum of American history, looks like the overhead goes way back
So down to Orlando where it's all go
Camping and fishing store that went on forever. It took over an hour just to walk the fishing aisles
Then to the gun section and hand gun after hand gun so I picked the biggest a Sith and Wesson 460 made my day ;)
There were macine guns, pump actions you name the yanks don't hold back.
Here's a boat for sale at the same place

This was one of my highlights of the trip at the top of the Rockerfeller buliding. Empire state front and the building to the rear left is one of the new towers to replace the world trade centre (tower 1) there will be 7 in all at differing heights.
All in a top trip and will do New York again one day but Vegas will be next.

2009/10 Ford Rangers and Towing
Submitted by holth on Wed, 2013-05-08 16:48Hi guys,
Anyone towing heavy loads or boats with there 2009/10 ford rangers?
Have recently purchased a XLT 4x4 Auto and was surprised to learn via the owners manual and internet that they only tow 1800kgs unless load levelling devises are fitted , then the full towing capacity (2500kg)can be used, didn't know this before purchase. As we know Insurances can be voided if found to be over legal towing weights.
Im lucky that my current boat is under that mark but was looking down the track to upsizing and that would mean having to purchase these devices ($600 plus)
Was surprised how the people at ford, ie parts and service guys don't really know there stuff when l was quizzing them on this the other day.
Also the sales guys not disclosing this when asked of the cars towing capacity when purchasing, but thats another story.
Does anyone use these devices towing boats?
cheers Paul

another death at Salmon Holes, Albany
Submitted by scottbec on Mon, 2013-05-06 16:02From the Albany Advertiser at 3:10 today:
Albany police have confirmed the death of a person at popular fishing spot Salmon Holes earlier today.
Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Peter McLean did not reveal the gender of the deceased person and said police would continue making enquiries into the incident.
Albany Sea Rescue Squad and police retrieved the body and reached Emu Point boat harbour just before 3pm.
It is understood the victim was rock fishing and was swept off the rocks by a rogue wave at the notoriously dangerous fishing spot.
ABC Reported it was a 46 year old Perth Man.
Hopefully no one we know!!
Currently a 1.5m Swell and 10 knot breeze... forecast for the next few days goes up to a 4m swell and 35 knot winds

Geolocation and Exif Data - an explanation
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Sat, 2013-04-27 07:16From the http://fishwrecked.com/forum/landbased-mauds-broad-bar-mack thread an explanation was required.
The interesting thing is that many cameras these days also have on board geo location features, so it is not just mobile phones you need to be worried about.
When an image is saved by a mobile phone camera or camera, it is saved in a file format on the cameras storage media. Embedded in the file format (JPEG, TIFF etc) is another type of data that saves information about the image, such as time, date, location, people tagged in the image, size, resolution etc. This data is known as EXIF:
P.S Apologies for the length of the post, I was testing how to view the geolocation on images in windows 7 but none of my mobile captures have had the gps on. I will test it today after I get back from work.
Exchangeable image file format.JPG, .TIF, .WAV Developed by JEITA, CIPA Initial release 1995 Latest release 2.3 / 26 April 2010; 2 years ago Extended from TIFF, JPEG, WAV Extended to DCF Exchangeable image file format (Exif) is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras (including smartphones), scanners and other systems handling image and sound files recorded by digital cameras. The specification uses the following existing file formats with the addition of specific metadata tags: JPEG Discrete cosine transform (DCT)[1] form compressed image files, TIFF Rev. 6.0 (RGB or YCbCr) for uncompressed image files, and RIFF WAV for audio files (Linear PCM or ITU-T G.711 μ-Law PCM for uncompressed audio data, and IMA-ADPCM for compressed audio data).[2] It is not supported in JPEG 2000, PNG, or GIF.
This standard consists of the Exif image file specification and the Exif audio file specification.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format#Geolocation
GeolocationThe Exif format has standard tags for location information. As of 2012 a few cameras and a growing number of mobile phones have a built-in GPS receiver that stores the location information in the Exif header when a picture is taken. Some other cameras have a separate GPS receiver that fits into the flash connector or hot shoe. Recorded GPS data can also be added to any digital photograph on a computer, either by correlating the time stamps of the photographs with a GPS record from a hand-held GPS receiver or manually by using a map or mapping software. The process of adding geographic information to a photograph is known as geotagging. Photo-sharing communities like Panoramio, locr or Flickr equally allow their users to upload geocoded pictures or to add geolocation information online.
Most of Nokia's Nseries mobile phones (such as the N95) have a GPS receiver and use Location Tagger,[4] a piece of software from Nokia Beta Labs. All captured images are tagged with corresponding GPS coordinates when a GPS signal is available. The second generation of iPhone (known as the iPhone 3G) by Apple Inc. is also equipped with a GPS receiver and uses the receiver to geotag photographs taken with the device. Subsequent generations (the iPhone 3GS, 4 & 4S) also support this feature. The first generation iPhone is not equipped with GPS, and uses a service provided by Skyhook to triangulate and approximate the location at which a picture was taken - using nearby cellular-phone towers and WiFi hot-spot signal-strength data. The Skyhook service provides approximate GPS location information which is then added to the Exif data associated with the picture. Also mobile phones with the Android operating system as well as BlackBerry smartphones with a camera and built-in GPS or Bluetooth GPS add-ons can geotag images with the included camera application.
Viewing and editing Exif dataIn Windows XP, a subset of the Exif information may be viewed by right clicking on an image file and clicking properties; from the properties dialog click the Summary tab and then the Advanced button. However, using this tab to edit Exif information may damage certain Exif headers.[19] As of the release of Service Pack 3, Windows XP still shows evidence of corrupting Exif tags when modifying JPG file properties via the file properties window.[citation needed]
On Mac OS X 10.4 and above, basic Exif information may be viewed in the Finder by doing Get Info on a file and expanding the More Info section.
On Unix systems using the GNOME desktop environment, a subset of Exif data can be seen by right clicking the file in the Nautilus file manager and selecting properties. In KDE, it can be seen by right clicking in the Dolphin file manager, selecting "Properties" and then "Information".[citation needed] Many Unix image viewers give the full set of Exif data.
In addition, there are many software tools available which allow both viewing and editing of Exif data.
Sharing photographs with Exif information may present privacy problems such as revealing a location. Such information may be edited out before sharing the file. Alternatively, there are metadata removal tools that will remove Exif information.

After basically a faultless eighteen months of pleasure running, I am finally selling my pride and joy. It has certainly been a fantastic boat having given us plenty of hours of fishing and cruising Perth waters.
If any of you are interested, the details are listed on Gumtree under Douglass Craft runabout.
Cheers.
