Firewood North of the river

Just wondering if anyone cuts their own wood for a wood fire soemwhere north of the river?

Checked out the DEC website, and only showing 2 locations to get wood from (Jarrahdale and south or Waroona). Ended up going down south of Waroon as my old man lives in Mandurah and needed some wood as well. However will most likely need more before winter is over, and looking for somewhere closer to home.

Anyone know of any designated wood cutting areas north of the river in the hills?

Cheers

Which sounder????

Hi all,Trying to get some feed back on what people think and their experiances on either a furuno 585 compaired to the lowrance hds to the same value.I know its an age old dicussion but im interested to get an update fron crew that have had this desission to make, how they went with what they brought and so on.Most of my fishing is done off mandurah in 50-100 metres but i also use the boat for game fishing.finding bait schools that may be 50m under the boat in 1000m of water is what i want my sounder to do.Am i asking to much from a non commersial sounder. My best mate has the 585 and 1kw transducer which is what im leaning toward and he loves it.I currently have a hds7 for my plotter and i like the idea of having maching units so they can talk to each other. Is that just a gimmick?Any info from fellow members would be appreciated.Cheers

GPS / Sounder Help

Hi, I am looking for someone in the northern sector that can help me finish installing my Garmin FF / GPS . I have the unit installed with the GPS working (that was the easy bit) but I will admit that I am not to keen on the instalation of the transducer etc . I know that its probably an easy job if you have done it before but I dont want to bugger anything up So if anybody can help please get in touch. Plenty beer on the go.

Plenty of sharks

While not entered in to this years Carnarfin fishing comp the main thing that has been discussed between crews was the amount of sharks being hooked and eating hooked fish. The times one spent on radio duty and listening in it seem that at one stage there was at least 10-12 boats all hooked on to sharks at once up around Koks island.

I spoke to people down from Exmouth and an old bloke who is stopping on Gnaraloo for a few months and it was the same up that way as well. One rumour that came about was that a week back the fisheries vessel Naturaliste put out a 100 hook set line and caught 83 sharks, a figure I only could dream of while doing it professionally with up to 750 hooks in the water.

Either they consider opening the area up to shark fishing or its going to be a near waste of time going fishing because all you are doing is feeding the buggers.

First dive on new boat

Well with the wind blowing fishing was canned and we went for a quick spin in the boat and a dive on the three mile .viz was good 8-10m and water was starting to get a little chilly or im getting soft We did see a nice harlie and two dhuies .great not having to pull the anchor .just push a button..The boat took four sets of dive gear and four guys 150lt of fuel and didnt even feel any different .handlels nice not as good as glass but that is the trade off i was willing to make .for the deck space.you could live at the Abrolhos for a week and be in comfort .cruising 3900rpm 21knots WOT5500rpm 36.4 knots not bad for a big boat with a load. Will get some fish next week. here are a few pics

Mexicans?

So the bombers were beaten by a team with zero wins...silence, if that was WCE the forums would be going crazy, just goes to show it seems everyone secretly follows WCE!

She's here

Well it's taken a few weeks but the new boat sits in her new resting place. will be hitting the fishing tomorrow and diving Monday give her a good run and introduction into fishing Paul style. get some blood and scales on the deck. will post some pics of her first trip.

Q for the Computer boffins

Hi Computer Peepz,

Can anyone recommend to me where I can get a 'cheap' and compatible (if possible) wifi pci-e adapter for a Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)?

Trying to get my desktop onto ADSL 2+ Wifi but have found my laptop is too old and found it easy on my IPAD, but would like to get rid of the ethernet cables stretched accross the house.

Any suggestions, links etc?  Would like to try and get it local (netplus or someone) so if there's issues I can return it without too much hassle.  Not having much luck with google searches at the mo.

Cheers,

Adam

New Abrolhos patrol boat

New $570,000 Fisheries’ vessel constructed in Mid-West for use at the Abrolhos
  • PV Pelsaert purpose-built for patrols of the extensive shallow reef areas
  • Boosts operational capabilities for management of a vital marine environment

A new 10m, jet-powered patrol vessel to support the Department of Fisheries' expanding operational needs at the Abrolhos Islands was officially named by Fisheries Minister Norman Moore in Geraldton today.

The new vessel was named ‘Pelsaert’ to revive a link with a Fisheries' patrol vessel used between the 1970s and 1990s as well as Francisco Pelsaert, the Dutch captain who commanded the Batavia, wrecked at the Abrolhos Islands in 1629.

Mr Moore said it was important to recognise the environmental and historical values of the island group.

“The Abrolhos Islands include sites of some of the most important historic shipwrecks in Australia, with associated historic sites located on the islands themselves,” he said.

“Adjoining State Territorial Waters, which include Western Australia’s first Fish Habitat Protection Area, also contain some of the most highly valued marine systems in the State.”

The Minister said the Department of Fisheries had the important role of managing the Abrolhos Islands, and the PV Pelsaert would be used to expand operational capabilities.

“The Houtman Abrolhos Islands is an A-Class Reserve and the department plays its part in ensuring the conservation of the area, but also overseeing tourism and recreational fishing and the commercial fishing and aquaculture industries that depend on it,” he said.

“This new vessel will have the ability to patrol the extensive shallow coral reef areas at the Abrolhos to undertake compliance, research and management activities.”

Mr Moore said he was pleased that local Mid-West companies Southerly Designs and Western Boat Builders were contracted to design and construct the PV Pelsaert.

“Purpose-built for its role, the patrol boat has bigger deck space than the standard rigid inflatable design, so it can carry equipment on the deck without the pontoons being damaged by rock lobster pots and contract equipment,” he said.

“The new vessel is capable of operating independently from other Department of Fisheries' patrol boats at the Abrolhos Islands - the PV Chalmers and PV Houtman - enabling a higher level of service delivery.”

clean up your rubbish

Just back from a couple of hours fishing off mindarie rocks and I would ask the so called fishermen that use this area to clean up after they have finished. The place was an absolute disgrace with empty beer bottles, empty bait bags, and all kind of other shit left lying around. Come on guys play the game, we are fortunate to have some of the best fishing spots in the world so why not keep it as natural as possible. Having said that I hope that these so called fishermen are not part of this forum and I hope that I am not the only one who is of this opinion.

Boat security

over the last couple of weeks I've had my boat raided a few times looking for things to steal.

Luckily i dont leave much in there, had some rope stolen, a pair of boga grips, and a 1/3 bottle of scotch (long story but it was a luckly bottle of cheap red label!), and a small medical kit.

Night before last the dog went nuts at something out side, so went out for a look but didnt see anything. Had a quick look in the boat and didnt see much. In the morning i took a closer look and noticed someone had been inside the cabin under the console, and pulled everything out from under the gunwales (gloves, rope, stubby holders etc).

The only thing taken which im annoyed about is i bought a new rope for tieing up to jetty's etc, (you know one of those fancy ropes thats easy to tie and undo etc.)

So it bought me to think about security i can add to the boat. Does anyone know if you can get motion alarms for boats? Im sure someone has told me before you can put something on the boat, and when there is movement (like someone walking on it) an alarm goes off?

What do other do, if anything for security?

Cheers

Bodie

Sunday Night Rescue

Eight rescued from sinking boat

PHOEBE WEARNE, The West Australian May 28, 2012, 5:11 am

Eight people were rescued from a sinking fishing boat about 1km off Hillarys Boat Harbour last night.

A Water Police spokeswoman said the Whitfords Sea Rescue received a distress call about 7.30pm after the private boat struck the Boy in a Boat Reef.

The crew took the people back to the boat ramp at the marina.

St John Ambulance crews attended but no one required hospital attention.

The cause of the crash is unknown but enquiries are continuing.

The 9.5m boat sank but attempts will be made today to recover the vessel.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vessel did not log on. Did not radio Mayday. We got phone call from one of the passengers wive's (who was at home) advising vessel had hit the reef. Initially told only 4 onboard but when rescue boat arrive 8 onboard.

Find it hard to work out how you can hit Boyinaboat reef which is 100mtrs off the marine wall with all those markers  to indicate clear passage.

Me thinks alchohol was involved.

Whitehills beach

Mrs gates had been nagging me to take the dogs down to the beach for a run so I took an hour off yesterday from building the new boat shed's roof trusses and headed down. Also took the new Nikon D5100 for a play....here's a couple of pics.

Still getting the hang of the camera and enjoying trying new things.

GPS upgrade

Hi all,

Looking at upgrading the GPS. The one I have now is an old Lowrance LMS 334C. Not a bad unit but becoming unreliable as it needs resetting from time to time and waypoints just seem to disappear. So would like some recommendations on a new unit.Nothing ridiculously expensive or huge but am looking for quality.

Cheers

Andy

4wd Bushings

took my 90series prado for a wheel alignment and was told all my bushes are stuffed,  (i'm not very mechanical, but seemed to be every bushing underneath but the front sway bar)

pedders are quoting around the $1000 mark.

any info on where I should go and if this is a reasonable price?

I have heard pedders suspension is not the greatest so would this be the same for there bushes too?

Opinions Wanted

Hello, I'm chasing some opinions on 5.5 to 6m ali runabouts (no V-berths) and engine combos under 40k (second hand). My last boat was a 20ft glassy but was too big and heavy for everyday use.
