Counting down to exxy
Submitted by meersy on Sun, 2011-03-06 21:10
Hi all just gettin the tub ready for the big trip to exxy.Just thought i would share some pics of her in all her glory as I have just completed a major re furb.Just a quick rundown on what I have done, the most obvious is that I took the 351 winsor inboard out and had the hull extended for a new honda 225 outboard. To compensate for the weight distrubution and bouancy differance I took the original 150l fuel tank out which ran down the middle of the boat and got a 205L tank built that now sits across the transom, which I have mounted my fold down rear seat to.I also had 2 90l fresh water tanks built into the extention that i have hooked up to a deck wash. The differance this has made to the ride and handling is awsome. The top speed is now 45kn up from 36kn and fuel consumption has improved by 60L on a average 70nm fishing trip.My fuel consumption is 1L/1nm.She cruises most compfy at 28kn.I have also re-done the interior inc fitting a couple of dvd screens for the squids for when they get a bit bored trolling.Ha ha.I must say it was a big gamble doing this sort of modification to a boat that is 32 years old(1979) and spending this much doe on it but now it is all done i dont regret it one bit.I would put her up against any new boat of the same size anyday Instrument wise im running a furuno 582L 600w sounder and a lawrance hds7 plotter with the platinum card.If any fellow fishwrecked members see us up in exxy around gamex time give us a shout.Always keen to meet like-minded fishos.

Car and Trailer Storage Dampier/Karratha
Submitted by tiimmbo on Sun, 2011-03-06 12:01With a pending trip up the coast almost upon us in early May I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice about car and trailer storage in Dampier or karratha. I will be driving my car and trailer up there and need to leave it somewhere for about 2 and a half weeks while we cruise up from Perth towing my tub as the tender. Last stop will be the Monties then we will finish up back at Dampier. I dont fancy parking it up at a ramp for that period of time out in the open.
Does anyone know of any storage places in either town? Or does anyone have a spare lump of dirt at there place?? Will happily pay for the service.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Box Jellyfish numbers related to big wet ?
Submitted by DRBROOME on Sat, 2011-03-05 22:40Hi guys , i had a big wake up call last weekend after almost getting stung by a box jellyfish , thankfully i was wearing Polarized sunnies and spotted it half a metre from me. Later that same day we counted 5 box jellies swimming past the boat in depths of 2m - 25m and Today i found out a mate got stung by the tentacles of one that got stuck in his cast net...
I have lived in Broome just over 2 years and only seen a few box jellies but it seems like this year there has been a huge explosion in their numbers... i think it might have to do with the huge wet season we have had so far this year...
Anyone know if this might be true ?
Needless to say , the first thing i did was go buy some vinegar to keep on the boat and will be allot more careful in the water this time of year.
Cheers

Bony herring and mullet
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2011-03-02 21:30Took the girls out for a trip down the channels south of town to stick the net in for a few mullet [mate got 30 in an hour a couple of days back]. Finished up with 6 mullet with the biggest 5 as a guess around 2-2.5kg, huge and only with its nose stuck in 3 1/4 inch mesh, one big yellow fin whiting and a heap of bony herring about 6-9 inches long. Just about the right size for small skip baits or cut in two for botton bouncing.
It would have been mission impossible if I didn't have a track still in the GPS from a recent trip down there because the water is still a lovely brooowwwnn colour.

cabinet maker wanted
Submitted by saltydog on Tue, 2011-03-01 16:38Any cabinet makers on here!
Smallish job for the ole lady.
She basically wants a couple of shelves, two doors and an empty space filled with some drawers.
Her existing kitchen is only 4 years old and is just ya generic basic white doors and drawers nothing ornate or fancy!
She's had a quote already and they want $2K for the job. Personally I think she's being ripped for that amount!!!
So if you want to give her a quote send me a PM.
cheers

Yellow tail Kingfish albany
Submitted by southcity104 on Tue, 2011-03-01 08:16On my last inspection we found some news papers under the floor of the Eclipse island light house of the coast of Albany.
The intire paper was an interesting read with Pills to cure everything, pre WW2 events, 8 acres in spearwood for 145 pounds! Best of all i found this article which was the closest to a fishing article i could find.
These papers have been fwded to the local museum

FAD Marlin
Submitted by adam.steff on Mon, 2011-02-28 13:41Raised a Marlin, thinking it was a Black, on Friday out at the FADs. Unfortunately broke our line after a brief struggle and spending a lot of time out of the water. Has anyone got some guidance on fighting techniques reference letting it run or trying to slow it down with drag, and more importantly driving the boat. I have heard of chasing them down but unsure how or when.

Company makes diesel with sun, water, CO2
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2011-02-28 07:52Interesting read for anyone who is into this stuff
IF this is at all possible, imagine the impact imagine the impact on the oil and gas sector
A US biotechnology company says it can produce the fuel that runs cars and jet engines using the same ingredients that make grass grow.
Joule Unlimited has invented a genetically-engineered organism that it says simply secretes diesel fuel or ethanol wherever it finds sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company says it can manipulate the organism to produce the renewable fuels on demand at unprecedented rates, and can do it in facilities large and small at costs comparable to the cheapest fossil fuels.
What can it mean? No less than "energy independence", Joule's website tells the world, even if the world's not quite convinced.
"We make some lofty claims, all of which we believe, all of which we've validated, all of which we've shown to investors," said Joule chief executive Bill Sims.

Can Dolfins stun fish with sonar?
Submitted by iana on Sun, 2011-02-27 21:22I was down at Woodman point jetty this morning, and wittnessed natures breakfast time. A pod of Dolfins had herrings balled up under the jetty. every now and then a herring would dart out from the school, skipping across the surface, jumping out of the water in meter jumps, or swiming on their sides in circles, as though their brain control for swiming had gone out of wack.
These fish were picked off by the Dolfins, diving terns, shags and cormorants and or common seagulls. Given a few minutes the herrings that were missed seem to recover. I wondered if these fish had been dissabled by the Dolfins sonar.
Is this a regular event at the jetty? did anyone else on the forum see this, as there were plenty of others wittnessing the event.
