Interesting article - firearm control
Submitted by timboon on Wed, 2018-02-28 21:00I was on a plane leaving Adelaide bound for WA a few years ago and read this article....
Its hard to know what to believe in journalism nowadays but i've always been of the opinion that crims get their filthy mits on anything they want so firearm law changes really only affect the law abiding citizens....
Anyway have a squiz if you feel like a quick read...
This article is a few years old now....

Bremer Bay Killer Whales
Submitted by beau on Mon, 2018-02-26 19:59Not fishing, but I thought some of you might be interested as the doco "Search for the Super Predator" by Dave Riggs was a huge talking point on this forum when it first aired a few years ago now. So what does a doco have to do with this post? Well this is the same "community" of whales featured in that documentary. If you haven't seen it, highly recommend it!
Since the discovery of this community of whales in the last decade or so, Cape Naturaliste charters now run "expedition" tours out to the canyon to research these orcas, now in their third season of expeditions. Not your usual "whale watching" charter, the idea behind the expeditions is to give researchers\marine bioligists from around the country, and the world, out to the canyon (1.5hrs on a good day on the southern ocean) that is funded by the paying public(me). Photos taken on these tours, by researchers and the public, are catalogued and compared to I.D photos of previous trips to create a greater understanding of why these animals are here, are these resident animals and are these the same whales that are encountered further up the W.A coastline. Over 120 different orca have been I.D'd out at the Bremer Canyon!
I was super lucky to encounter what we were told by the crew as a "very rare" expedition. The whales on this day were extremely social, displaying behaviours either never, or rarely seen out at the canyon. What i can only describe as "puppy wrestling," small packs of juveniles "mosh pitting" and making multiple close passes of our boat, something I will never forget!
Anyway, here are some of my favourite photos I took on the day and I'll leave a link to view my album of 100 other photos if you wish to.
Cheers,
Beau.

Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2018-02-26 18:27For a bloke that was nearly playing last finals series it seems a little odd to me that he isn't training with the main group and why O why wouldnt he have had a run in the first game of JLT?
Something fishy is going on around here....
I'll be avoiding him in my Supercoach team this year i'm thinking even though he is priced well.....

rotto swim - how did you go?
Submitted by pelagicyachts on Mon, 2018-02-26 11:13better than this poor guy I hope - we were not that close (max zoom on the phone!) but seemed to happen real quick and the conditions were not that bad - my guess would be it was taking on water unknown to them and the wave over the back just finished them off

Bagged out plus some
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-02-25 20:47The alarm went off at 5 . Sandy said you want another hours sleep. So next alarm went off at 6 . A quick coffee and boat loaded we hit the water just after 7. The seas were reasonable and with the clouds off in the distance we headed out to a spot we found last week. We arrived at a location andvset the drift to check things out. Deciding to anchor up instead of just drifting.
First line down Sandy brings up a nice kg. Then the wrasse and skippy moved in . While there the clouds came over and heaps of rain but the seas were flat as with hardly a breath of wind. After a while we had a visitor that stayed around for about 1/2 hour just cruising around checking things out. Estimated his size around the 4 mtr mark. He came within about 2 mtrs from the boat and as always the camera wasnt handy.
Gave up on the anchor after our visitor and set our drifts. With very little wind all day it made it a pleasant day out and managed to bag out plus a few others to finish the day. A couple of undersize fish were returned to fight another day . The trip back was a breeze vruisong in on 25 knots.
Couldnt have asked for a nicer day on the water

If you want a good laugh
Submitted by Bryce Day on Sun, 2018-02-25 17:33Go moor your boat up at rotto just south of where the sawimmers come in.... Grab a beer and watch people wreck outboards, boats & themselves in general. Ive never seen in my life a more comical 3 hours of boating. Or just do the swim. Will be doing it every year from now on just for a laugh.
Highlights from the day were watching
bilge pumps working from 4-10km line,. at least 50L came out of one 5M boat
4 props bent from reef in rotto
3 snapped anodes
one guy getting first aid from anchor to head
3 x boats hitting the little reef at rotto
the boat that topped it was the guy that parked his glass 30 footer on top if it. Ropper effort that one.
Got the best kick from listening to all the comments on the radio about the shark sighting.

Sea Rescue Donation
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Thu, 2018-02-22 14:00Hey Guys
Every month at work we have a casual for a cause free dress Friday and last year I requested Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue as our cause and this is happening tomorrow so we'll raise a few hundred for the volunteers who watch over us on the water.
I just got a call from a colleague who I've worked with for 10 years and get on really well with who used to tell me about her brother's fishing trips but she hasn't mentioned anything recently. She rang to tell me that this one is very close to her heart as it was her brother that was lost at sea off Mindarie in 2016 and asked if she can do a write up to encourage everyone to really tip in tomorrow as she says how amazing Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue were in her family's dire time of need. Pretty heartbreaking stuff!
Can I ask everyone to consider making a donation no matter how small this weekend even if it's your local VMR to give back to the crews that are there day and night to make sure we all get safely back to our families.
Cheers

Nice day out
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-02-18 17:19With the forcast to be nice we decided to go out and give it a bash.
We were heading out to some new ground that looked good but had to cut it short when i discovered a leak in the hydraulic steering which made it very hard to steer. Abandoned the trip out deep and decided as we were aut we may as well have a fish. Still had some steering. Had a look at a bit of ground on the gps that looked possible only 1nm awY . Set up the drift with little wind so no need for sea anchor. First fish on was a nice 40cm foxy . Then to my surprize a nice big kg came to the surface. I was stoked. As the drift continued i got a small pinky that went back. Sandy then got another nice kg. It went quiet so back to the start of the drift again . Hooked up again this time a small dhuie of about 450 went back well. Hooked up to the bottom and busted off both hooks and while i was trying to re rig Sandy nailed another 4 nice kgs. After that only a few small fish came up and all went back fine. Called it a day and cruised in on around the 25 knots.
Keepers 1foxy and 6 kgs. Released 2 small pinks 1 small dhuie and a tiny black ass. So it was a good mornig in the end. Certainly looking forward to a feed of kg.

Quintrex top ender/renegade/ Stacer outlaw
Submitted by Jazzyoh on Sat, 2018-02-17 22:18Hi all,
looking at getting a quintrex top ender/renegade or Stacer outlaw, but still a bit unsure which sizes to consider. Is a 440 big enough to sleep 2 people if needed? Or is 460 probably the smallest? All side console boats aswell. Any input from people with experience would be much appreciated
cheers
p.s money situation may limit me size wise so just want to know peoples thoughts

Deep anchor well - too deep?
Submitted by bradz on Tue, 2018-02-13 10:09Hey guys
My ongoing project boat has forced me to ask alot of questions in regards to boat design and function. The old Regent Viscount has a rather shallow anchor well so I am making it deeper. But, as it does not have a lid/hatch, I have wondered if it will pose a risk in the event of taking a wave over the bow.
As I am sure most of us boaties have experienced in the past, it doesnt take much (usually at very slow speeds) to have a wave come over the bow. Now if you dont have a hatch on the anchor well, this could easily result in about 50 or 60 litres of water filling the anchor well. Yes, the well has a drain hole but it would take quite some time to empty. Do any of you see this as an obvious risk?
The reason I ask is that I was going to make the anchor well deeper to allow for greater rope capacity and allow for greater chain fall (if I fit a winch) but dont want to comporomise safety.

Missed call phone scam
Submitted by ranmar850 on Mon, 2018-02-12 19:53 For those that aren't aware, there is a very prevalent phone scam going on at the moment. You will get a missed call from an overseas number--if you are slow off the mark, and call back, you will be put on hold while the phone bill racks up at an incredible rate. Don't blame Telstra or whovever your provider is, this is up to you. It will always be from somewhere unlikely--I've had them from Estonia and a couple of different parts of Cuba; they likely won't be from anywhere you should be getting calls from. So, unless you are scam prone, and think it just may be that Nigerian prince finally getting back to you
, just don't bother to ring back. And not even worth blocking the number--unless you actually ring back, they will only try once.
