How to catch blue mackerel around Perth?

 Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, thanks for the add.

I'm a mad keen spearo, but I don't know much about line fishing tbh.

Now, I bring dhuie and coral trout home regularly but my wife's favorite fish to eat is actually slimy/blue mackerel, which is a fish that we can't really target while diving lol!

So I'm after any info that could help me get some of these: gear, tackle and all, but mostly when and where?!

I'm based in Perth and have a boat that can go offshore :)

I'm not after peoples' specific spot of course, but general area, depth and ground...

All advice will be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Sky

PS: this is not a joke

Prop advice

Im currently looking at changing my prop to try get afew more revs. I currently have a 13inch 17 pitch prop but have noticed a 13 1/2 inch 15 pitch prop second hand,  would I gain any revs from this change or would it probably just stay about the same?

Sand toothys .

Hit boss up for late morning start. that

Cray spot available

One of our cray crew is having to pull the pin, so I have a spot available for the rest of the whites run, Launch gentlemens hours out of Ocean Reef - weather permitting. Can use pots that are already in the water, just need to switch floats. I have a winch and tipper

Cheers - Eric

Pork Crackling

Came across some pork crackling I had bought reduced use by product. Intention was to use it for craybait (as pork fat). Will this work like pork fat ? Cheers

Chanel Nav Question

So yesterday I was pulling into Elizabeth Quay using the right side of the channel (red line) and the ferry was beelining straight for me (green line) on an angle (i.e. lined up the red marker with the green marker) pushing me straight into the nav marking and rock wall. He eventually managed to turn enough to prevent a collision with him or the rock wall but let his horn rip pretty aggressively.

Was I in the wrong here i.e. that I have to wait and give way to Commercial vehicles through a narrow channel??

cops at the ramps

The cops have been at the ramps putting sticker on trailers. I beleive they wehere at point peron this morning  and banged stickers on for brakes, lights and stopping boaties going out with safety gear that was out of date.

Pretty much sums it up

.

Choppers .

Took the boy down after work for

A fish . aim to put few baits in freezer

little tailor were on the bite pretty much

as we arrived . Was good to get the boy

on measuring each one and showing him

how to de hook fish when using gangs as

AG Report into DPIRD

Well, Well the Auditor General delivers a report stating that DPIRD has a serious conflict of interest issue and weakness regulating the commercial fishing sector!

After just shafting the recreational fishers /local small business up and down the coast with the current massive overreach.

No wonder the commercial sector isn't crying foul, once again the restrictions don't pass the pub test??? (The standard by which all political descision are measured).

Licence fees- with new regs

So is our licence fees going to be dropped seeing we now fish for less time?

New Rules are in

Demersal fishing will now be banned:

1 Feb- 31 March

1 Aug to start of Term 3 school holidays

Start of school Term 4 to Dec 15

Only 4 demersals per boat will be allowed and looks like a voluntary buyback of commercial licences will be offered

Jurien in December

Heading up to Jurien next week for a week and holding no hope at all of being able to chase demersals so hoping FW crew can give me some pointers on other options in December besides demersals if the wind plays the game.

Cheers

Winch all wired

Have a crack tomoz . Or next day . Haven’t tried it yet . I decided stuff foot pedal . I went for on / off switch ( I can put foot pedal on if I wish) . Bought deep cell battery . ( charge up every 4 trips) would make good back up for motor just in case . Makes a mint bench seat . Strength on both sides . We will see . 50 amp trip switch joined to battery box .

New winch set up

Pretty cool . 2 bolts out the way it goes .Good old Ian . Made out of thick ally fixed and supported with 316 brackets and bolts . Good thing about it keeps pot at good working height . Under a minute to remove.

Southern bluefin tuna

Anyone getting any SBT at the moment? Heading out from Hillarys on Saturday to try to get a few.

Cray pots

Gday all,has anyone tried the steel fold up cray pots? And if so is there catch rate any good? Thinking they may stay put better in the stronger currents and swells without putting a ton of ballast in them. Cheers for any feedback

Scotty's Lures - Barra set

A little set of lures I put together this week with a couple of fizzers for barra.
Quite a complex colour pattern that kinda looks rough using the air brush, hand brush and foil work.
I sometimes find it harder to make the paintwork distressed than if I was air brushing for a perfect finish.
Lures still need clear coat and will look a million dollars once applied.
Cheers

If I have put this post in the wrong category please let me know as I just thought it would be cool to just put up pics every now and then of some new creations I have made.

FNQ charter

Heading to Cairns & Port Douglas with the family in March. Keen to do a charter one day and wondering if that's a good time to chase barra or maybe go offshore? I've done both before but at other times of the year.

Keen to hear any ideas and also any suggestions for operators.

Best range of squid jigs

Can anyone recommend a shop with the best range of squid jigs north or south metro. Looking to stock up. Cheers

Importing used outboards from the USA

This may have been covered years ago when the Aussie dollar was stronger. Anyway, does anyone know of agents in the US who broker this kind of process. As I say, I am looking at used only. Thanks in advance, I John

Wireless reversing camera

I have been reversing my boat for may years through a relatively small gate into my backyard.

Always a bit of  bugger after a long day on the water, so I am finally looking at getting a wireless reversing camera with screen

Looking for any suggestions from anyone who might have done this

Cheers for any responses

Bivy Stick Mobile Phone Satellite Extender

Has anyone got/used one of these? I've found mobile reception to drop out >12nm out of Mindarie and have been exploring options and mobile extenders installed in the boat are bloody expensive. Really just looking for ad hoc coms but whilst avoiding installing anything. I've just changed from Optus to Telstra and haven't tested it yet but the Bivy Stick looks like a perfect mobile solution that can be taken on hikes etc as well.

Montie's trip Nov 22' - Montebello Island Safari's

Gday guys, just got back from a week's fishing the Montie's with 13 mates from over east with Montebello Island Safari's.

Could have not asked for better weather bar the last day, too good infact and unfortunately the targeted fish I had in mind on stick baits were very hard to tempt with little to no swell.

Had an absolute ball catching up with friends again, the usual great banter, beers and some well earned fish on our part.

I had finished this post by setting out a day by day break down of what we got upto and what we fished for, explaining how the days unfolded but after typing it all out I realised the post was, well, kinda pretty negative towards Montebello Island Safari's itself as a whole being the facilities, equipment and boats, predominately not alot of positivity towards the skipper and as a consequence of poor leadership and direction, the deckie's as well.

Each day was pretty challenging on alot of fronts and not because of us as a group but we made it work and had an absolute ball.

The reason I say this is that it was us as a group, the paying customer that made the trip memorable for the good times we had and the fish we caught, could it have been better, your damn right it could have been, a whole lot better for a whole lot of reasons and being a pretty positive type of person I just deleted the whole post.

Maybe it was because we were the 2nd last charter for the year and everyone from M.I.S had just had enough and were ready to pack up and take a break, I'm not sure to tell you the truth.

A couple of photo's I had on my phone and still waiting for quite a few more.
