Cheapish Halco Lasr Pro's

Howzit,
Just got a couple of lures for up north trip from K-Mart Cannington(carousel). A Halco Laser Pro 160dd 2m+ diver in mackeral colour(H50) for 25% off retail for $17.29 and the 120std 1m diver in mackeral colour (H50) for $13.99. Dunno if that's good or not but worth a mention as I read a post last night about some people chasing that colour Halco's.

2008 Marron Season starts today
Date: Friday, 25 January 2008

Recreational marron fishers are expected to be out in force for the Australia Day long weekend, with the 2008 Marron Season due to commence at Noon today.

Thousands of Western Australian fishers are expected to take advantage of the 23-day season (between Noon Friday 25 January and Noon Sunday 17 February) to enjoy the experience and the chance to take home some tasty freshwater crayfish, which are unique to Western Australia.

Department of Fisheries Principal Management Officer Nathan Harrison said some rule changes were made before last season and it would be wise for fishers to make sure they had the latest information.

“A detailed brochure Fishing for Marron can be downloaded from www.fish.wa.gov.au and it contains the rules and information that fishers need to know, before heading out to their favourite marron fishing spot,” Mr Harrison said.

“Fishers must have an up-to-date marron licence and they can be purchased online from the Department of Fisheries website.

“Last season, the minimum legal size limit for marron taken from ‘general waters’ was lifted to 80mm, to help provide increased protection for the breeding stock. In ‘trophy waters’ the minimum size is 90mm.

“Another key change last year was the possession limit of 20 marron that applies to all areas outside of a person's permanent place of residence - with the exception of 'trophy waters', where a separate daily bag and possession limit of five marron applies.

“Bag limits apply midday to midday and licensed fishers can each take 10 marron per day, from ‘general waters’.”

Mr Harrison said there was no commercial fishing in WA’s wild stock marron fishery, therefore all recreational fishers should understand that they play a key role in the sustainability of the fishery by not taking undersize marron or more marron than the limits allowed.

“Because marron fishers may be camping-out or driving and walking through bush areas we also remind them to abide by fire bans and to help prevent the risk of creating bush fires by being responsible and cleaning up campsites before leaving,” he said.

A commercial fisherman has been ordered to pay more than $20,600 by a Geraldton magistrate, for using one more pot than he was entitled to.

27-year-old Jesse Vivian Rowland of Geraldton yesterday pleaded guilty to breaching the West Coast Rock Lobster Management Plan between 15 November 2004 and 15 March 2005, when he was master of a vessel named Infinity.

The Geraldton Court was told the accused had fished for western rock lobster during those four months, using 92 pots instead of the 91 he was permitted to use.

Rowland was given a fine of $4,000 for the breach and ordered to pay court costs of $1,470, plus a mandatory additional penalty of $15,150 for the rock lobster that were subject to the offence.

Mid West Compliance Manager Dave Griffiths said the magistrate, when handing down his decision, had noted that it was the responsibility of a fishing boat master to ensure the correct number of pots was being operated.

“In addition to the monetary penalty, the magistrate also ordered that the pot entitlement of the licence being fished at the time of the offence be permanently reduced by one unit,” Mr Griffiths said.

“The rock lobster pot was also forfeited.”

Mr Griffiths said pot quotas were one of the important management tools used to keep fishing at sustainable levels within Western Australia’s rock lobster fishery.

“The hefty fine and penalties, plus the loss of a pot from a licence, should serve as a strong reminder to all commercial fishers to operate in accordance with the relevant legislation and be familiar with any applicable restrictions before they fish,” he said.

Department of Fisheries’ monitoring of fishing activity and its enforcement of the rules that apply within various fisheries, throughout the State, is taken very seriously and various strategies are used to uncover illegal operations – including a 24 hour phone service, through which the public can provide information on suspected illegal fishing.

expressions of interest for Marlin YFT trolling out deep

ok with all this talk of yellowfin tuna out there etc, alot of us are into our gamefishing both light and heavy and have been toying with the option of an out deep trenches etc marlin yellowfin tuna trolling day etc, if we can get the right day, always better for a few boats heading out especially for the smaller type of boats, and can give a few people not so confident to head out and give it a go.
i know myself i have a 5.5m boat and will get out there on the right day, so lets see how many people out there are interested and as there will be a few deckies needed, people can put there names down for deckies.
day and dates will just have to see how we go depending on weather especially the way it is lately

I'm going on a 10 day trip to the Outer Coral Sea Territories and have decided to get a new spining reel/rod. Has anyone used the Shimano Twinpower 8000PG? I need to go as heavy as possible....and will use it for just about everything except heavy trolling?.......and no....I'm not going to get a Stella or Saltiga$$$$$

Talking to a local charter operator this week, he made an interesting statement......that the Sambos at the aggregations hit jigs NOT as a food source, but purely out of aggression - territorially.

Having little experience with this, am curious what others thoughts are, expecially when relating it to jigging for other species such as Dhuies & Reds.

The Sol Advantage...

I've been looking at the Sol's recently and would have bought one on the weekend if I could find somewhere that wasn't sold out of them...
But I saw a Td Advantage and started wondering the difference between them.
Has anyone out there used the Sol and the advantage and could offer some advice on them. Or even a similarly priced reel that would match them.
What about a stradic. Are they in the same class or does the extra weight make them not as competetive as the sol or advantage.
Is a luvias in the same category.
Campbell's have the 3000 luvias for 289 which is what the 2500 Sol's are worth.
I was originally looking for a 2500 but at this price the luvias might have got the nod even if it is a bigger size.


mindarie closures

The access road onto the big mindarie wall is closed for construction till the 4th of Febuary. if you want to access the wall, you have to walk about a kilometre to get there.
Its a real pain when you got kilos of fish with you

Fishing tips

This topic has probably been brought up before, but I thought it my an idea to ask Fishwrecked members if they would like to list some tips or ideas that they have come with that may be of use to other members.


This could relate to terminal tackle set-ups, baiting ideas, burleying ideas, boat set-ups etc. It might be idea they have taken from a different type of fishing that they have adapted successfully in fishing for another species.

 


A couple of things they I have used or made that I thought may be of interest include a rod rack that I have attached to my roof racks. A certain major chain store that begins with a K are selling rod holders which are basically an aluminium strip a few feet wide , with rubber grips which you place a rod in. I purchased one of these for about $6, attached it to my roof rack with cable ties. You then tie the rods to rack for additional security. I use a thin piece of material as this is easier to undo and does not rub on the rods. The home made roof rod holder holds upwards of 8 to 10 rods and the rubber grips protect the rods from any wear.

 


Live baiting for bream. I use a small Luderick float (can be purchased at the same store). These are very light, very visible and can be fished at varying depths. A plastic tyre valve protector with a small hole through the centre from the top placed on the line above the float allows you set the depth. I use small live prawns with a single split shot place six inches above the hook. Cast near any structure and hang on.

 


Fishing back-pack. After searching high and low for a sizeable back pack to carry all my reels, tackle, bait, torches etc., I spied my daughters school back pack. For about $60 I brought her a new one and I have a very large, strong backpack they can carry all I need and more.

 


Tackle box light. I bought a small led "book light" which has a clip on it which I can clip to the lid of my tackle box. It is very small, but has more than enough light to light up my tackle box at night.

I am sure you guys have some great tips that may be of use to other members.

Thevenard Island fishing trip

I'm new to this site but I was wondering if anyone had taken there boat over to thevenard island. I just wanted to know just how good is the fishing over there? Heard it was the best. How safe is it to leave your car and boat trailer in Onslow.

Just brought a Penn generation V bait caster and thinking about throwing it in the bin and buying a Daiwa Bayard instead! does anyone have any good feedback on the reel??? and what it the quality etc... like?
THe thing i hated about the penn was when you pull line off the spool the level line stayed still and the line gets caught under the layers. does the bayard do this?

hey guys . for the guys that want some nice size tailor down rocko way i was out on the south side of long point last night and did really well. my biggest was 38cm and my brother lost an een bigger one at the shore line. well worth a look. a few small ones around but some nice sones in amongst them. all up we came home with 8  34cm or more for three guys  in less than two hours. lovely night


Expedition or dogfight ??

hey guys
looking at getting a new reel but not sure what
mainly do bottom bashing with a little shallow water jigging thrown in but also want to try poppering this year up at exxy
could say 70% bottom fishing 29% jigging in water under 50m and then 1% poppers .....
i thought the exp 6500 would cover this well ... but some say the dogfight with the higher retrieve would be better...
im at a loss .... ive never used either of the reels but im sure if i need to recover more line then i will just wind faster :)
any help would be great ... thanks


New rod for TLD 25

question 4 penn generation v baitcast owners

i just brought a penn generation v75 baitcast real, it has levelwind which works perfectly well when iam reeling it  but if i pull line of the spool with the drag on ,the level wind dosent move backwards with the line it just stays still causing the line to pull of the spool at sharp angles. is this a bad design or is there some thing wrong with my reel. thanx

End of an Era

Well it is a sad day, Sold the trusty old trailcraft runabout today. She has served me well and she was my first ever boat.  I will miss her but i am happy to be clearing room for my new more practicle boat. 

Still i will miss her, she has taken us to some great spots over the years and seen some great fish.

May she find happiness with her new owner, must remember to delete all of the GPS co-ord's

Does changing the treble size on diving lures affect the performance in the water?

I am in the process of changing my trebles on my diving lures and was wondering if changing the treble size (up or down) will change the way they swim in the water? the lures in changing trebles on are Laser Pro and X-rap. Anyone got any info - thanks
