Carnar-fin 2018: Updates

(Admin- please delete if promotional posts like this aren’t permitted)

Hey all

For those of you that are interested, this is just a general information/ update on Carnarvon’s “Carnar-fin” competition this year.

As you may be aware, the comp came very close to not running this year, but thanks to the hard work of the Carnarvon Chamber of Commerce, a group of local businesses and some passionate locals, it is definitely running, and by all accounts, will be as good as ever.

Dates for the comp are, as always, the last week in May/ first week in June (Monday May 28th – Sunday June 3rd) to coincide with the long weekend on June 4th to allow for the metro boys to get home after the week

The comp is a not for profit event designed to support the community, with proceeds to be split between the local Lions club (who usually run the event, but are unable to this year due to some unfortunate personal circumstances) and the Carnarvon Yacht clubs initiative to reopen the currently closed town waterway (keen media watchers/ fishos have probably seen/ read about this recently) , so its all for very good causes. Rest assured, the “old boat ramp” (on the commercial harbor side) is still fully function and provides easy access to the open ocean.

Some facey links you will find more info on, and which will be regularly updated with more details are:

https://www.facebook.com/events/143671319782487/

https://www.facebook.com/CarnarFin/

A new improved website is also currently under development and should be up in the near future.

Give the pages a like and follow if you are keen to find out more, or just support in principal.

The comp itself will be of the usual tried and tested format with some new improvements/ additions.  Western Angler and some other fisho related big guns are trying to make an appearance to help support the event. Kids competition/ juniors day, daily prizes, sausage sizzles (and rumour has is, fresh B+E burgers at the ramp in the early mornings!) supporting the local sea rescue, and all the usual entry souveniers and give aways are also back as usual. Registration is also relatively cheap compared to most of the other North West comps as the focus is on inclusivity. The different catergories of fish (17) give landbased, tinny, small and big boaters the opportunity to have a crack.

Those who have ever fished Carnarvon before will know how good the fishing is around these parts. The comp, while it can get serious for the hard cores, is overall pretty relaxed and more focused on fun and having a good time, so its open for everyone, no matter what your skill or seriousness level.

Would be great to see some support for this event, even if just in spirit/ comments on here and the facebook pages, and we hope to avoid any potential negativity referring to “catch and kill”, “upsizing” etc etc as everyone involved in this event have the best intentions of the community- both Carnarvon and fishing in general- in mind.

And don’t think about winning the Red Emperor category… that ones mine this year J

Stumbled upon this little fishing dynamo on You Tube this morning. Made it a little difficult to get out of bed.....

Denmark accommodation?

I'm looking for some recommendations on where to stay for a week with the missus and two young kids? Something self contained. Close to some fishing any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Young bloke on the jigs

First red for my young bloke on one of neap tackle jigs.

New reel, then new rod

OK I'm keen enough with my fishing interest to spoil myself a bit and upgrade to a nicer combo.

I mostly bottom bash with bait in water 40-150m at present but am interested in possibly deeper water and also jigging. I have some cheaper combos at the moment that work but they aren't ideal. Penn GT (65 lb braid) and TLD25 (80 lb braid). I will convert these to trolling use or the Penn is good for guests with the level wind.

I will continue to use the new outfit for bottom bashing but want a reel that doesn't wobble as much on retrieve. I'm thinking PE6 will be enough and it would be good if it could spool 350-400

I'm thinking some kind of Jigging stick will be the rod but I'll worry about that later...

My thinking in order of preference at the moment is:

Shimano Talica 10 single or 12 two speed, Fin-Nor Marquesa 16, Diawa LD40H single or 2 speed

Now my biggest difficulty is do I go for a larger version 2 speed to get more a versatile reel and put up with a 650 gm reel or just go for the smaller lighter single speed and call it for a max 150-200m depth outfit.

So my question is: Other than the slight weight difference, the slight extra expence and the slighly more complex build, is there any reason as far as using a reel goes that a 2 speed is a disadvantage over the single speed version?

Has anyone used both a single speed and two speed Talica of the same size? Is the 2 speed as good?

I know the Diawa 2 speed doesn't have an AR bearing so might have a slight amount more slop

New batteries

After my boat being idle in storage for too long I now need to replace the batteries.  The storage company has recommended Power Crank Batteries who they deal with frequently and they have provided me with a quotation for a pair of Power Crank N70ZZCMF (850CCA) batteries.  Motors and associated electrics are not my forte so I thought I would ask if anyone has any positive or negative comments / experiences with respect to Power Crank batteries.

Guilderton Moore River 3 mile Reef

Hey does anyone know whereabouts three mile reef in Guilderton is? Planning to go for an overnight fish one of the days.

Do you drive onto the beach at the groyne and head up the beach from there or do you need to access the beach from the tracks near the lighthouse?

How far up the coast is it?

Steep Point Availability

 Good day ladies and gentlemen,

A few mates and I booked a camping site (Tip) at Shelter Bay from 27th May to 10th June 2018. Unfortunately we had to make the trip shorter due to unforseen circumstances and as such we cancelled the first few days of the booking last week. We will now only be going from 1st to 10th of June. That means that some lucky fisher will still be able to get a spot, that is if someone else hasn't already snapped it up. Thought I would let you all know so that perhaps a fellow FW member can get a spot.

Cheers!

Bream fishing spots nor

Stolen Furuno gear

Hi Guys if anyone hears of any Furuno gear being sold cheap can you let us know

went to pick my boat up from a fabricator in Perth to find out the 295 and 2 x 2kw tranny’s they  fitted had been stolen the night before, they also took my original 585 that was in boat, 2 other boats got stripped at the same joint as well with Furuno gear

PE 4 Jigging Combo ideas

Interested to hear what people are using

Currently have a great pe2 outfit that I use in shallow water, but looking for a slightly heavier combo that will allow me to fish a range of depths from 80 to 250m.

Most of the time it is jigs, but did go back to bait on the weekend and we did ok

Heres an idea of what im looking for.

Overhead reel prefer star drag but its not a deal breaker

Capacity around 400m of a quality braid with a BS of around 50lb, more interesting in actual breaking strain as opposed to a PE rating

Rod options will be a bit harder I imagine,as would like to be able to jig with it, but also drop sinkers if the fish arent playing ball

Budget, mid to higher end gear

Happy to hear what you are using or what you would suggest

Cheers

Rick

Insurance claim

Well first of all I have to thank sunshine aka Gordon if it was not for him I’ll be stuffed

january 15 my boat was broken into and the good person that did it had done some damage to my boat. They smashed open the lock on the door and Silly me left 2 rods 2 reels and my tackle bag in the locked cabin all stolen they also stole my flares and platinum card out the gps/sounder combo unit they did try and steal my simrad nss12 but could not get it out of the dash so they smashed the screen and damage the dash also stole my stereo was pretty devastated. So did the normal thing called the cops they did nothing cause it been raining and then called the insurance company, got told what they wanted got the necessary quotes sent all the photos and quotes off thinking cool should here back soon asking for bank details but not this time was to ask questions where my boat was and was told they would be looking into it. Unfortunately couple days later the phone call I didn’t want and that was to be told they declined my claim very devastated now, thinking the worst that I am now massively out of pocket and not being able to afford everything. Ended up reading a few post and found sunshine and so happy I did we need more people like Gordon cause mate you are a legend and don’t think I would have had the outcome I did without you. After speaking with sunshine and explaining my situation he was more than happy to help and could not believe what was happening, gave sunshine all the necessary documentation and authority to speak on my behalf to the insurance company, off went the response letter from sunshine and then we had to wait a few nervous weeks wondering and waiting many emails back and forth plus phone calls and then got the phone call on Monday from sunshine and it that just made my day that insurance company had reversed the claim and have now accepted it and will payout for the damaged goods plus some stolen items. I can’t thank sunshine enough I could keep saying it over and over definitely wish there were more people like Gordon in this world you are definitely one in a million mate and I appreciate everything you have done for me and my family

hopefully have the boat back in the water very soon now thanks to sunshine can’t wait

thanks

Hayden

Oversize Sign Set-up

There has been some discussion about oversize sign set-up. This is what I do that works well. Soft split vinyl signs for the front of the Landcruiser and a single hard sign on an alloy frame that drops in my rear bait board holes on the back of the boat

Friday Funnys

Enjoy

Cervantes long weekend query

hey guys - looking for some friendly advice.
thinking of taking the boat (5m plate ally) up to Cervantes this long weekend - forecast is predominantly for easterlies; fresh on Saturday and Sunday is dropping off to eventually be great by the time it is to leave on Monday.

looking at the Willy weather forecast...

what do you think...?

if i do take it out is there relatively good ground in close enough to not get pounded by the easterly wind waves?

any advice greatly appreciated.

Dave
