Fantastic Fin-Nor aftersales service.
Submitted by Comrad on Sat, 2016-04-16 17:21Hi Everyone. Just sharing something that recently happened which I thought you may enjoy.
I recently went on a bit of a GT popping trip which I had planned for a while, and after considerable research on this site, Alan Hawk, etc... I got a Fin-Nor Lethal 100 LT, to pair with my T-curve 8 foot stick bait series rod.
When I got to my trip destination, there was a bit of derision about the Fin-Nor, amongst the Stellas, etc... But, I wasn't too phased. Out it went, and it worked really well. I managed to haul in both a 45 and 47 Kg GT without any drama, as well as the cursory other fish one encounters on such a trip. But, on the last day, I hooked onto a decent sized Queenie, and as I was fighting it, stumbled in the swell, knocking my reel on the gunnel and snapping it at the stem. Oh, you should have heard the people jump on the Fin-Nor hating band wagon when that happened...
Anyway, after I got back, on Friday, I emailed Fin-Nor, telling them what happened, including photos, etc... and asking them if this was a common thing, etc... Obviously telling them about the gunnel, and how it wasn't just a freak accident. I just received an email an hour ago, less than 30 hours after I sent them email, with Fin-Nor not asking any questions, simply saying that they'll send me the cast body for the reel, or if I send the reel to them, they'll fix it for me, no charge, no questions asked. Not a single question about sales receipts, conditions, etc...
I think that's the sort of after sales service which should be commended, and I feel that I should let others know

Kalbarri
Submitted by TJ on Fri, 2016-04-15 15:25Hi guys.
We're looking at going up to Kalbarri in June. Mainly land based (no 4WD), but maybe access to kayaks or a dinghy.
Looking at getting across the other side of the river, to try for tailor off Oyster reef, and also fishing the river for Bream, Whiting, Jacks, and hopefully Mulloway and Giant Herring.
Can anyone offer any advice about fishing Kalbarri that time of year, chasing those species.
Also keen on bringing the crab nets up, has anyone fished of the new wharf? How far above the water is it?
Cheers.

Mandurah crab fishery to be certified sustainable

Mandurah swimmer crab fishery set to be certified sustainable, in world first for recreational area
Landline

The world's largest independent investigator of sustainable seafood is set to announce its first ever certification of a recreational fishery.
Key points:
•Mandurah crab fishery set to get sustainable status, in world first
•Commercial fishers hope the eco-label will lead to greater scrutiny of recreational fishers
•The number of recreational fishers using scoop nets is currently unknown
Scientists working for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) are in the final stages of assessing an application for the blue swimmer crab fishery at Mandurah in Western Australia.
The state's amateur fishing lobby group, Recfishwest, is a co-client in the application for the MSC's eco-label, along with commercial fishers in the Peel Harvey estuary system, 80 kilometres south of Perth.
Recfishwest's chief executive Dr Andrew Rowland said its involvement was a reflection of the importance of the fishery to the recreational sector.
"We also want to see a very healthy fishery for generations to come, whether it be from a business perspective or whether it be from a lifestyle perspective or both. We understand we need to be in this together," he said.
The WA Government is investing $14.5 million in pre-assessments for MSC certification for about 50 commercial fisheries.
The MSC's WA-based information officer, Matt Watson, said the blue swimmer crab investigation was the first ever involving a recreational fishing group.
"Traditionally MSC has always been about market incentivisation, giving these guys access to new market premiums on the back of MSC certification," Mr Watson said.
"For the rec guys it's a new story really, it's more about social licence to operate, making sure the collaborative approach between the rec guys and the commercial guys is beneficial to all fishermen that do access this fishery.
"That's really important these days because resource access is increasing as an issue and if we get rid of that competitive element and make it collaborative, it's a really positive story for the management of this stock."
'It's the gold label: we are sustainable'
.

Commercial fisher Damien Bell — who is one of 10 blue swimmer crab licence holders on the 130-square-kilometre estuary system — said the MSC eco-label would prove the fishery was sustainable.
"It's the gold label, you can't argue with it, so once we've got it we can hold it up to the world and actually say we are sustainable, how we are operating here is not harming the environment and we're here to provide good local fresh sustainable seafood to the Perth consumer," he said.
Mr Bell hoped the certification process and ongoing monitoring by the MSC would lead to greater scrutiny of recreational fishers and how many crabs they were taking.
"We share the resource, we are not the only ones accessing this resource, whether the figure be 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, who knows?" Mr Bell said.
"But there's a sharing factor that goes on and because they access X amount of hundred tonnes a year, we needed to make sure that we only weren't assessed, their activities also needed to be assessed and proven sustainable."

WA's Department of Fisheries has a state-wide survey of recreational fishers to determine catch numbers of all species, but it only questions those using boats, not shore-based fishers.
At Mandurah, scoop netting is hugely popular with people of all ages able to catch crabs while wading in the shallows.
The department's supervising scientist for the MSC program, Dan Gaughan, admitted the numbers of fishers using scoop nets was unknown.
"I believe it's in the thousands, but until we do a more complete survey that includes the shore-based fishers with the boat based fishers, I don't really want to guess," he said.
Dr Gaughan said thermal imaging cameras were now being trialled as part of the MSC certification process.
"We've tried cameras if possible to get full 24-hour counts of fishers in some areas and see if that can be applied across the broader estuary," he said.
Dr Gaughan said the MSC scientists had also asked the department to develop a harvest strategy for blue swimmer crabs.
"A formal harvest strategy that lays out how to put the breaks on the fishery if required, so it sets reference points," he said.
"For example, using catch rates, so if the catch falls below those it invokes a management response that's been agreed to by both the commercial and recreational fishers."
Call for registration system to track recreational crabbing
Commercial fishers such as Mr Bell said a licensing system was needed for shore-based crabbers. At the moment only people setting crab traps from a boat need to be licenced.
"You can't have unlimited access, we don't have unlimited access and at the moment there is unlimited access on the recreational side of things," Mr Bell said.

Recfishwest said it would support a low cost registration system.
"We don't think it should be driven in terms of revenue so we wouldn't expect it to be a high cost-type licence arrangement, but some sort of registration where people have to be registered to participate in a fishery from a management perspective is something we think would help us get a better handle on the recreational catch estimates and ensure the ongoing sustainability of the fishery," Dr Rowland said.
He said Recfishwest was prepared to use the political power that came with representing an estimated 700,000 amateur fishers, but the MSC application in Mandurah showed it was willing to co-operate with the commercial fishing sector.
"I think in this day and age we're sophisticated enough to be able to work side-by-side and manage this resource so we can maximize what it returns back to the community more broadly," Dr Rowland said.

Boat Tracker
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2016-04-15 09:45Was talking to a copper I do some work with and got onto the subject of boat security and mentioned I have a hitch helmet, wheel clamp and Datadot (which he says Police don't support anymore by the way) he offered me a very handy tip I thought I'd pass on.
Heaps of us have an old smartphone sitting a drawer and rather than forking out hundreds for a boat tracker he suggested I simply put a SIM card in my old iPhone and hotwire it to one of my batteries hiding it somewhere in the boat where it will get GPS reception. There are a few tracking apps that alert you when your device leaves a certain zone and all you need to do is track the boat to its resting location and call the cops to meet you there to retrieve it.
Obviously nothing is foolproof and it can be disabled but if you have a phone sitting there doing nothing every little bit helps in protecting your pride and joy.

Tamala camping fishing
Submitted by Boppo on Fri, 2016-04-15 05:41Normally go to Peron national park for my shark bay annual pilgramme but thinking of mixing it up a little.
Having a tinny and a 5m quintrex I was wondering where would be the best place to camp for the best access to launching and then fishing either boat at Tamala station?
Which boat would be most suitable?
Have been reading the search items on Tamala and it sounds like we should get a feed fishing a high tide and the channels which don't seem to be too far offshore

He let go of the floatline and off it raced , a quick call to me , chase down and shot through from above and it was ours . couple of crays to round out the bag on the way home...sweet

Kudos for local fisheries compliance Officers
Submitted by meglodon on Wed, 2016-04-13 15:20I got up this morning grabbed a plate of Weetabix and the local paper "Mandurah Coastal Times" and started to read through it got to page 5 and then nearly chocked.
The head line "Crabbing Net Fines"
Briefly the story is about nine people getting done for breaking the laws governing possession of excessive numbers of crabs and under size crabs.
Scum bags all.
To summerise the offences,
Sun Jian Wang possession of 148 undersize blue manner crabs.
Total fine $7600
Jun Wang and Li Gen Guo possession of 29 undersize crabs and obstructing fisheries officers each fines $2450.
Graham noel Gent2 counts of assaulting Fisheries Officers, yet to be sentenced.
Hannah Din and Eh Ku possessing 85 undersize crabs and obstructing Fisheries Officers, yet to sentenced as magistrate not happy that the 2 accused understood (they speak only a Burmese dialect)what was going on in court
Juanjuan An, Sicheng Wan and Yu An processing 43 crabs, each was find $750 plus mandatory penalty of $1900
To Fisheries I say good job, so a few people who do not care about the future of the fishery have been taught a lesson, hopefully.
In the popular crabbing spots there are plenty of signs in various languages so trying to use the excuse "me no understand" is just not on.
So, ok read on a bit further page 16 "Fine for punching" briefly Michael John Vanderzwan who is 198cm tall punched a 60 yr old man in the mouth. Vanderzwan was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation.
What caused this old man to receive a flogging (as well as the group he was with) the old man started to take pictures of Vanderzwan abusing a group of old people. Vanderzwan assaulted the oild man his mate then came up and laid into the others of the group with a crab net.
Hmmm, I wonder why these 2 upstanding members of society to offence at something the old group said to them about their crabbing practises at the Dawesville fore shore. One can only but wonder.
The point being with the second story is whilst F/W members are encouraged to take note and film if possible people who are breaking the law it is not without some danger.
With all this type of activity going on brings me to a statement a Mr Caldwell made in his aspirations to becoming a prime minister of Australia, however I just can't quite remember what the saying was.

Great day out !!!!!!
Submitted by OOH YEH on Tue, 2016-04-12 19:16The call was put out for a Deckie awhile ago and I decided to answer but don't get me wrong I still love going out on my ski ..... Today was the day to pair up and have a look around ..... As the weather predicted were we were going to fish, we decided to stay in close ........ We chased the salmon up first and manage to hook up on my waxwing lure hooked to 20lb mono on a gamoku rod ..... The fight had us all around the boat and dodging the reef break plus all the other boats wanting a look in ....... Finally got the fish aboard ........ Then it went quiet so we decided to move on to another area for some KGW but all we kept hooking up was juvenile snapper time to move again ........ Then we hit the hot spot manage to bag out in a hour ....... I would like to say thank you to the guys that put it out there to have a total stranger on board for the day ..... We had lots to talk about and it wasn't just fishing ..... You know how you are .....

Planning on getting down early and punching out straight through the gap at Hillarys and finding some lumps to drift over... don't reckon I'll even need to get out the wanker.
