New FW Introduction
Submitted by Devo1965 on Tue, 2014-03-11 15:17Hi all, Name's Stephen, which only my mother uses, all call me "Devo", not from Deviate but from school mates modifying last name which has stuck. I became a member of FW some months back and was waiting for a decent catch to go with my introduction, but have hit a dry spell and have nothing to brag about lately. I've fished various locations around Aussie in the last 40 years (yes nearly old enough for the grumpy old mans club), including Geelong area in Vic, Narooma & Bermigui in NSW, Darwin, Steep Point and Perth area to name a few. Now settled last 10 years in WA, Port Kennedy. I am a member of MBFC but never around for most comp's due to work commitments. I have had trouble like most to crack the Perth area fishing codes but have a reasonable catch success mid year with Pinkies on the 5 fathom with earlier mornings and late arvo/nights. My next adventure is taking by boat over to the Abrolhos Island for 2 or 3 nights, I am fairly well prepared and have read every article I can find on the issue. At this stage I have penciled in early April before Easter weekend to be ready for a good break in the weather before heading off. I believe there is a WAFA Helco comp at the island between the 5th & 11th of April, hope this doesn't make it had to find a mooring area. I am hoping to meet a few FW members as I work various rosters and fish alone due to may Son now 15 and sadly has lost interest and original fishing buddies not always available. Also keeping my eyes peeled if any other boats going to the Abrolhos Island early April. A couple photo's of pink's caught on the five, My son will still fish when he knows there on and soft drink, chips and tim tams loaded. Cheers, Devo.

Rods for Abrolhos trip
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Tue, 2014-03-11 08:32I'm heading out to the Abrolhos Islands next weekend with Reel Affair and am chasing some advice on what rods to take. I'm thinking I'll take a PE 3 and PE 5 jigger and a light-medium spin setup for casting around the islands / tuna schools and maybe some soft plastic work. If I decide to do any bait fishing I'll just use the charter's gear.
Does that sound about right or is there something else I should be aware of?

Rotto Shorebased fun fishing
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2014-03-11 08:26Hi all
Searched on here for not much info. Since the last 6 yrs up in karratha has ended having some R&R at Rotto before starting work in the new job in Mandurah. Used to spend a lot off time there as a student, but was more interested in G&G (grog and girls) then.
Been ages since I have fished anywhere there shorebased. Not taking the boat over due to servicing needs, so shore based.
Not looking for anything huge, more just sitting back soaking a line and relaxing (which is why I love fishing).
Anyone have any suggestions for a lazy fish.
Only taking bream/hezza/tailor/squid type rigs over, ie light.
Comments appreciated.

fishing comps
Submitted by petermac on Mon, 2014-03-10 22:25the amount of fishing comps around these days (not just in WA ) that are offering very good prize money , if a bloke was a crack fisherman ( and I am not ) he/she could probably make a living just fishing comps with a bit of sponsorship

Saragosa SW?
Submitted by tainted on Sun, 2014-03-09 21:54Hey ppl,
I've been eyeing up these reels for a while now and was curious if anyone had any feedback?
In particular I'm looking at them for a possible beach combo. I love my baitrunners but the amount of grit I find when servicing tells me that they wont last forever. Maybe the Saragosa's new sealing might be worth the cost?
Cheers in advance,
Tainted

Light Estuary Popper Fishing
Submitted by Lowza on Sun, 2014-03-09 16:51Three weeks ago a mate suggested I get into Top water fishing for the usual bread & butter species I target. The lure of choice was the 3B Berkley Popper.
After the first weekend I was addicted had around 15 Top water hook ups on herring landing all also had 3 Hits and 3 Follows from some BIG! yellowfin whiting however non landed. Also there one big black ray ramming my leg as well turns out you shouldn't leave your wading bag with necked fishing in waste deep water.......
Second weekend similar 15 or so Top water hooks up on herring with a couple of hits and follows from yellow fin still yet too land one.
Third weekend the best herring fishing I have had in years, schools and schools out there with 30+ Hooks ups, 25 or so landed with 10 kept. The conditions were perfect crystal clear no wind. There were hoards and hoards of BIG yellowfin on the flats however they were not interested in the popper this week. I tried subsurface stickbaits and also a hardbodys but very minor interest.
Does anybody have any suggestions surrounding getting these yellow fin whiting on poppers would be appreciated.
The herring were decent models too around high 20s/30cm.

Solar panels
Submitted by jarrid on Sun, 2014-03-09 08:48I have done a search and haven't been able to find wha to am after. I am looking to get a solar panel set up on the roof of my boat to tops the batteries up but also to run up to say two fridges. The worst case situation would require having enough grunt to maintain the 2 x fridges for two days whilst the boat is getting towed from say exmouth. I have twin batteries and a vsr.
Questions are:
- what wattage panel?
- what type of panel is generally used?
- what else is required in the system? Is it jus a regulator or do you need a charge controller?
- any recommendations on where to source the gear locally (been told jaycar)
roof

bus bar

isolator

vsr.

Power Cable Fittings for Electric Reel
Submitted by Belly Fish on Sat, 2014-03-08 20:58I'm keen to ditch the alligator clips on the power cables for my electric reels. I'm thinking of running a cable from the battery under the gunwale, then installing three take-off points equally along the side.
I'm assuming this is what quite a few anglers have done, my question is can anyone recommend good quality, salt resistant fittings for the job and where to get them from?
Thanks
