Coral Bay Reds
Submitted by fat chance on Tue, 2017-03-07 09:45Hi Everyone
Heading up for the annual Coral Bay trip at Easter this year. Keen to hear everyone's experience with what you find works best to chase the Big Reds up there.
We have typically headed out to the 60-70m area and looked for either small bommies or broken ground. Typically use the standard bottom bouncing rigs with mullies and fresh flesh strips. Last trip we had some success with jigs, but found that to be less successful and more of a novelty. Soft plastics also seem to be ok on their day - 7" nuclear chicken seems to be alright - although again, not so much as to separate it from any other method.
Interested to hear if anyone does anything out of the box on this.

easy access boat fishing somewere between perth and Kalbarri ?
Submitted by D_d_001 on Tue, 2017-03-07 09:28Taking a few days off soon and have promised to get a young nephew and my brother out and about for a trip away with the boat.
Not sure the young guy can handle big days out in the boat so looking for a spot to take him. (coastal town with not so big distances to travel to semi decent fish)
hoping to pick up Dhu's baldies etc for him.
My usual destination is Coral bay and we head WIDE but don't want to travel that far in case it's just too much for the youngun.
have heard a few good things about Leeman but never launched or fished there.
Kalbarri an option as I have a few good spots but again some are pretty wide as well.
would very much welcome some suggestions or general comments on places to travel
BTW wouldn't be too happy with beach launch as I'm not really set up for it.
boats a 6.1 genesis. I've had for well over 10 years.
Cheers all

15kg trolling rod info
Submitted by barcelona125 on Mon, 2017-03-06 13:18hey guys,
just after some recomendations on a cheaper 15kg trolling rod, i will be matching it up to a tld 20 with 15kg mono
was looking into the shimano elite backbone but at 1.7m i thought it was bit short, would prefer a bit longer at least 6ft
i have had a quick look at the shimano revolution offshore 15kg trolling rod, if anyone has any personal experiences with them positives and negatives.
thanks for any info,

Where are the bloody fish
Submitted by Swompa on Sun, 2017-03-05 22:09Saturday, launched at Woodmans apt just before 6 and down to the Power Station hot water outflow. Got one tap on the line I was trying to catch a livey on and after an hour and a half and burning through the Shred gave up. Worked south to James Point towing lures but stopped for a whiting fish. Nothing. Worked the reefs and weed patches north, towing lures all the way. Finally got a pair of squid and a herring near pinnacle rock before pulling the pin on the day at 10.
Back out today, again in the sound. Launched at 5:30 sounding the reefs working north south. No fish on the sounder and with sunrise getting close we anchored on the 4th one south and pumped 8kg of burley in, got the trumpeters going... after an hour and a half of nothing we headed out to mewstone. Towed a pair of twisties and managed to find herring behind the island. Something with a yellow tail chased one of the herring up so it went back as a livey but didn't get touched. Anchor, burley for nothing.
Kept working north with diving lures behind the boat past Stragglers towards the Windmills, coming across the dirty water line. Kept putting along it until bailing on the idea and setting up for some whiting. Two bait sized whiting in 30 minutes. Time to work our way in. Found some birds and a bait ball near fish rock but
Quick stop in Freo to see mrs and kids then work the weed banks south for squid. Only one landed was the size of the jig. Down to Owen anchorage and stopped for the last crack. Had a squid free jump half a length behind the boat outrunning a shag. Took a minute to realise what it was, evadent by the ink in the water. Was only small.
Did plenty of miles, used a bit of fuel, crew dropped his wedding ring overboard in 8m of water, all for 12 herring and 2 squid over 12 hours.
How did everyone else go?

Lure choice and tips for land based Exmouth and Cape Range National Park
Submitted by davewillo on Sun, 2017-03-05 17:05Hey all
Heading to North Kurrajong campground for just over a week at Easter, and looking for some advice on gear and targets.
Will take my 9wt saltwater fly gear plus light spin for small stuff, 6kg spin outfit spooled with 20lb braid for lure casting, and probably a heavier spin outfit to soak a bait at night for spanglies. If there are others that would be useful I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Will take a selection of metals for casting for queenies, trevally etc. Would like to try some stickbaits as that looks like fun! Suggestions on the best lures and plastics would be great.
Lure fishing will be for fun by will try to get the odd spanglie for food. Have caught plenty up that way from boats but not shore based. I've heard that baitfishing after dark can be productive.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Cheers

Willieweather
Submitted by Lance55 on Sat, 2017-03-04 18:22Strewth.
willieweather strikes again!
Take day 2 of the Kalbarri Classic as an example.
at one stage today the forecast was for about 5 knots from the North East.
it was stonking in at 20 knots from the South West! We got our butts flogged off ( again) by following the forecast.
they say the info is from BOM, but looking at tomorrow, willie weather says it's going to be pretty good....BOM says it will blow 20 knots in the morning....and from a different direction.
who do you believe????
Whilst we can laugh at this, it does bugger up your day when it's like this, and it happenS all too often.
i know weather forcasting is an inexact science, but look at today's wind graph.....double the forecast all day.
thats not really good enough IMHO.
Look at 3 or 4 different sites and they are all different forecasts.
Rant over!

Shredder Use for Members
Submitted by Shore Catch on Fri, 2017-03-03 18:52As many people know, we custom designed and built a fish shredding machine.

It has been a common question about whether the machine is available for use to shred people’s frames, old bait, cray heads, crab shells etc. There was also the Fisheries issue that you can’t use recreationally caught fish for commercial gain. And of course, how do you control safety matters with a machine that is purpose built to turn flesh and bone into small pieces. Anyway, after much consideration we have decided to make the machine available subject to the rules set out below.
- We will not accept monetary payment for providing the service, however we would expect that you would patronise our shop as a customer.
- Available days are Monday and Tuesday mornings, but you would need to notify us that you are coming in at least 24 hours prior to attendance (some other times may be available subject to our workload).
- The weight limit on products is approximately 20kg per time – this is generally one tub, and any more than this consumes too much of our time (we will generally process 20kg in 5-10 minutes).
- The product is to be brought in frozen – we will not process thawed products. Raw material in an esky that can be then used for the shred is the best method.
- All plastic is to be removed prior to arrival – it wastes our time removing plastic, and worse still is that shredded plastic should not be placed in the ocean.
- We will not process undersized or protected fish – your load will be rejected and we reserve the right to notify Fishwatch (it is illegal to have them in your possession).
- You are to certify that your load contains no metal (hooks) as there may be liability for repair of equipment if it does – if in doubt don’t bring it in.
- You are to remain in attendance while your product is processed.
- You are not permitted to enter our work area; however, you may watch from behind a barrier.
- We will not receive and store raw material or product, and you are to take the product off-site as soon as it is produced.
- We will not accept your shredded product in exchange for any benefit whatsoever.
We genuinely believe that processing fish waste for beneficial use is far better than it going to landfill. After shredding lots of fish waste for people, the above strategy has been developed so that we can provide the service in a managed way.
We hope that you will take advantage of our offer, and it is made in good faith to provide a service for the benefit of recreational fishers. If you would like to discuss, please contact us.
Mick

Garmin echo map sv chirp
Submitted by Curndog on Thu, 2017-03-02 15:59hey guys,
anyone here using Garmin echo map chirp sounders? I recently put a 95 in my boat and think I'm starting to get the hang of it in identifying good ground and fish. Pretty much always use the traditional sounder and only tinkered a little with clear vu and side vu. just wondering if I'm missing out and if there's any benefit to using them. Anyone who's got some experience and advice would be great. Thanks

Axiom
Submitted by gruntre69 on Thu, 2017-03-02 08:00I was going to post this on my other new sounder shopping thread but it probably deserves it's own topic.
Comments anybody?
The iminent release from RM looks interesting. Competitive price, one transducer for most applications, and the big one for me is gyro sensor built into the 3D transduser with a very powerful processor built into the unit to output the roll, pitch and yaw compinsated picture all in 3D.
If this works anything like they are sprooking I will probably go for it. The problem as usual is the only thing you ever see is demos from yanks fishing in shallow flat lakes in the states.
