Big Cobe
Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2019-09-14 07:42A few photos of a big cobia I shot off shark bay this week.
We were diving a nice 8m bombie in about 15m surrounded by sand. A mate said he’d seen a big manta earlier, and when I saw this off in the distance, I originally thought it was another shark! Once I realised it was a cobe, I took a few deep breaths and hid behind a fan coral for a few dives, until I ambushed him on one of his ledge patrols. I nailed a good holding shot, and he stripped a good 50m of line off my reel before I started to gain control! Unbelievable power these cobia.
Went 27kgs, and definately my pb.

What fish is it?
Submitted by fab on Fri, 2019-09-13 16:14Hey guys and girls, my mate and I are in exmouth at the moment and are wondering what fish we saw swimming on top of the water, with mouths open. They weren’t feeding or anything, almost looked as though they were taking in air. They were big, with large tuna shaped tails. It looked so strange, two of these big fish just cruising on top of the water with mouthes open, not interested in bait or lures. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you for any feedback.
Cheers Fab

skippy for bait
Submitted by Sea goat on Wed, 2019-09-11 15:01Hi guys.
have noticed a number of people seem to target skippy for bait. Just wondering how they go? can see how they would be good as firm flesh and moderately oily. what species do you generally target with them, and what sort of rigs? and do you generally use them as whole baits, or strips on gangs?
if mainly using them for sharks etc i wont bother as dont do too much beach fishing, but if good for other things i reckon i can keep up a decent supply!
seem to be all i can catch lately, and sick of buying bait. so far havent tried them as bait as have only kept what i will eat fresh, but keen to give them a shot, so next time will keep a couple and freeze.
cheers!

Shelter Bay Campsites
Submitted by Belly Fish on Wed, 2019-09-11 12:45Hi there.
I've been going to Steep Point for the last 10 years or so camping at Shelter Bay, normally the Easter 1 or 2 campsites.
This year (June) we couldn't get Easter and stayed at Lombardos.
Campsite was good, but the anchorage was terrible. Normally I put a mooring system in, with a big admiralty anchor. Works well at Easter. In front of Lomabardos, the bottom was flat limestone covered in around 2cms of sand. The anchor just couldn't dig in. Eventually I found a large rock and I just wrapped the anchor around it and we managed.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with either of Wellard 1, 2 or 3, or Hull 3 campsites with respect to anchoring.
Cheers
Terry

WA Water Corp Waste Water (sewerage) Results 2019 Point Peron
Submitted by Tom M on Wed, 2019-09-11 12:39The WA water Corp has just released their 2019 Annual Ploom summer water quality report, this is more of an overview with the detailed annual report for Point Peron (Sepia Basin) due later this month. So another year and it gets no better. The report shows that 40% of the sites sampled exceeded their threshold for Faeces Bacteria, 50% of their sites sampled exceeded Phosphate levels and 60% of sites tested exceeded their Nitrogen levels. (42%) of the surface samples exceeded the primary recreation contact guideline. Thermotolerant coliform concentrations at Sepia Depression exceeded the seafood consumption EQG in 32% surface and 18% of bottom samples. I will publish charts and greater detail when the Sepia Basin report is published and again bring it to the attention of our Premier and Minister for water. Any boaties in this group with a Gopro that they would be prepared to send down to film I would be interested in a message.
And for those that just think it is Point Peron, not much better for Ocean Reef or Swanbourne.

Plastics at night and Hale rd Reef Snapper?
Submitted by br3nno on Tue, 2019-09-03 21:49Hi all,
Looking to chase some snapper.
Obviously Cockburn is now closed for fishing. Is there much luck towards the North a bit?
I have fished the inshore reefs around Hillarys but it must be a nursery. Only juvenile, sub 35cm Snapper.
Also, how do plastics fare at night? Still aa effective?

Helping to gain some insight into the fishing and boating communities
Submitted by Joeyw on Mon, 2019-09-02 19:31 Hi,
**This post has received prior approval from Fishwrecked Admin**
New to the forum and seeking help to gain some insight into the fishing and boating communities.
Looking at ways to bring boat owners and the fishing / boating community together and would very much appreciate 1 - 2 minutes of time to answer a brief survey. To say thanks to those that can spare the time, I have 3 x $100 BCF vouchers to give away that will be drawn 30 September 2019.
Many thanks in advance to those that can assist.

Safety Bay- Bent Street Boat Ramp:Work(Excavation) to begin next week.
Submitted by Moking on Mon, 2019-09-02 19:21Excavation of the Bent Street navigation channel is scheduled to start next week and is expected to conclude mid to late October.
The Bent Street Channel will remain operational throughout the work, but there will be no access to the Carlisle Street sand boat ramp due to truck movements for transporting the excavated material. Alternative boat facilities for recreational boat users are available at Donald Drive.
The sand excavated from the channel will be transported to the Millar Road Landfill Facility for re-use.
At least the Ramp will remain open this time.

Land-based Fishing - Broome WA
Submitted by JarradWA on Thu, 2019-08-29 20:11Hi All,
Up in Broome until Friday 6th September so hoping for some land-based fishing tips. Disappointing to hear only 180m of the 640m of the jetty boardwalk is accessible now as I do not have access to a 4WD. Not targeting anything specific just keen to get out for a fish.
Good fishing spots (?):
The Jetty
Entrance Point Rocks near the Fishing Club
Town Beach Boat Ramp Rock Groyne
Gantheaum Point Rocks
Cable Beach North of the Rocks
Gear I’m taking:
15kg travel rod
5kg travel rod
40-pound hand reel
200-pound hand reel
Hoping for any tips or pointers for any of the fishing locations such as suggested bait, recommended lures, best tides (slack water top of the tide?) etc.
If any locals are going for a fish and want some company / someone to assist with costs let me know.
Thanks in advance.
cheers

Man's body found today-Boating off Garden Island.
Submitted by Moking on Wed, 2019-08-28 16:54Not good to read about this-perfect condition out there today?
"A man has been found dead in waters off Rockingham in what is believed to be a boating accident.
Police say the man was seen floating near the Garden Island shoreline not far from his upturned dinghy about 12.30pm.
Water Police responded to a report from a member of the public and recovered the man’s body.
It is understood the man has been identified and police have contacted his next of kin.
Police are investigating the circumstances of his death and it is not yet clear how the vessel came to be upturned."
