Fishy in a different way - also ongoing
Submitted by Bluetonic on Fri, 2016-01-15 18:31So bought a new place a couple of years ago and have spent most of that time doing stuff inside.
Decided it was time to prepare the pad for my eventual shed as the backyard was pretty baron.

Hired a bobcat and got my son Ryan on it to help start clearing the lawn for the pad.

And with the help of mate Garbo.

Was wondering what to do with all the crap dirt we were pulling up and decided to pile it near the fence. Thinking about it I thought Hmmm, I could make a garden out of this and hey, let's build a pond.

Pulled all the retic up and got the pad concreted.

And then started to dig the pond out.

Put a pond liner in and put weed mat over the mounded dirt area.

bought a pump that does 25,000 litres per hour as well as a good filter which eventually will be set in the ground.
Put rocks around the pond I managed to get from a friends property in Burekup and used agregate to lay over the weed mate.

I'm going to build decking between the house and the pond.
I've stocked 24 Goldfish but also 30 Silver Perch which are growing exceedingly fast, along with Marron and Yabbies and to date, nearly 4 months now since they've been in, they all seem to be living in harmony.

Put the gopro in the pond and got some awesome footage, the next pic is a still from that. I've also enjoyed dragging a small lure with no hooks across the pond and the Silver Perch go ape.

Will keep you updated on more progress as time goes bye.

Fresh Water Fishing in Victoria
Submitted by devhay on Thu, 2016-01-14 11:53Hey guys, i'm heading over to Wangaratta in early march and am hoping to get a bit of a fish in while I'm there
Will be staying at a friends place walking distance from the Ovens River which apparently holds a fair few cod, redfin, trout, perch and blackfish
Has anyone had any experience out that way? I haven't spent too much time in freshwater other than the odd cast for redfin in waroona..
From what I can see, I'll need a license (which by the looks of I can get a 28 day license for $12) is there else I should look into?
I'll have an ask around at the local tackle shops when I get there and see if I can get some tips, I'm thinking of taking over my 1-3kg bream combo and lures

Big fine for taking egg-carrying female and protected lobsters
A 36-year-old man, Michael John Pereira from Serpentine, has been ordered to pay $5,669 in fines and penalties for not only taking totally protected rock lobsters, but also removing the majority of a female lobster’s egg-carrying appendages.
In Fremantle Court this week (Monday), evidence was presented to explain that the lobster was one of a dozen western rock lobsters found in a cooler box on board a vessel that was inspected near the Leeuwin Boat Ramp in East Fremantle on 30 December last year.
All of the rock lobsters had been taken that day from pots set off Rottnest Island.
The court heard that a Fisheries and Marine officer found residual eggs attached to one of the remaining egg-carrying appendages, which are known as endopodites. A number of rock lobster eggs were also discovered on the deck and gunnel of the boat.
Rock lobsters with eggs attached beneath their body, also described as berried females, are prescribed as totally protected fish. The mutilated rock lobster was therefore a totally protected fish. The accused had removed the endopodites and attached eggs with the intention of preventing determination of whether the rock lobster was a protected fish. It is an offence for a person to alter, mutilate, or disfigure any fish with the intention of preventing that determination.
In addition to the berried female lobster, a further three lobsters were in setose or tar spot condition. Western rock lobsters in either condition are protected between Windy Harbour and North West Cape.
North Metro Compliance Manager Todd A’Vard said the rules around egg-carrying lobsters and also the protection of those in setose or tar spot condition were important in respecting the key times in the breeding cycle for female lobsters.
“We urge rock lobster fishers, who may be unsure of these rules, to make themselves aware of them,” Mr A’Vard said. “The onus is on fishers, at all times, to know the rules.”
“In the current season, we especially need rock lobster fishers to understand the new pot sharing rules, which allow for two licensed fishers to share a rock lobster pot. Each fisher must attach a separate float with only their gear identification (ID) number on it, to the pot. No more than two floats, each with only one gear ID number, must be attached.
“Each licence holder may use no more than two pots to fish for lobster, even if sharing pots. Fishers are not permitted to bring home lobsters on behalf of the person who shares their pot and may only take and land their own bag limit.”
More information on WA’s rock lobster fishing rules and limits is available in the Recreational fishing for rock lobster guide 2015/16. Find that at www.fish.wa.gov.au, or collect them from departmental offices, or Information

Port Kennedy boat ramp situation
Submitted by Smalldog on Wed, 2016-01-13 21:19I Went to throw a few poppers around at Port Kennedy boat ramp and seen over 50 people fishing there which was good to see, what wasnt was the amount of people littering, throwing cigarette buts into the ocean, leaving beer cans and mcdonalds packets on the beach, keeping undersized crabs and fish that were not even close to size one i also noticed a needle on the footpath where i parked my car which we managed to put into the bin. The issue of people parking in the places to rig your boat up and where to reverse back into the ramp is getting really bad there were cars all over the rigging places, cars on foot paths and the actuall car park was empty do people not want to walk or dont understand, It recently took me 20 minutes for someone to move there car of the ramp so we could back my boat in. Obvousily not a huge issue more concerned with the rubbish, broken glass and needle on beach and foot paths.
Note the photos below and the empty car park

Dhufish drag settings - to give or not to give
Submitted by STORMBOY on Tue, 2016-01-12 15:29Hi Guys,
I did a google search using my question, including "Fishwrecked" in the search to see if my question was not addressed elsewhere. I was not satisfied it was covered, hence my question:
For those that catch Bigger Dhufish (10kg+) I would love to know 2 things
1) How tight is your drag?
2) If you give the fish some line- does it get you stuck on bottom (reefed) based on your experience.
For me, I only catch small ones on 30lb braid with 60lb mono with bait. A 5kg Drag would be my max and I have never had one reef me. Ive had them dive back close to bottom but Ive always been able to get them up.
When I look for bigger fish in future will I have trouble with my Twincraft 2-3pe with 5kg drag? Or do you go 10kg plus drag to make sure they cannot get back down once you start the retrieval?
Thanks In advance guys.. I'm sure fellow newbies can learn from this as going just light enough maximises the fun :)

Bait boards
Submitted by Comrad on Tue, 2016-01-12 13:40Hi Everyone,
Just chasing any advice re: bait boards. I'm having work done to my boat next week and was hoping to get a bait board fitted while its in the shop. I like the idea of the Prowave bait boards that I've seen online, but they all seem to be in back order, and I think by the time they get over here, it'll be too late.
I'm chasing something of fully welded plate aluminium with solid mounting feet, not something with flimsy legs. Has anyone got any recommendations for anywhere in W.A. where I might be able to source anything like that? I'd really appreciate any advice anyone may have.

Sounder Shot Guesses
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2016-01-12 10:24Sorry about the quality as I had some glare but I took this on some ground we found out from Forrest Beach last week and wondering what it might have been and yes I had it on auto at this stage as I spent the day fishing and playing around with the sounder trying to get a manual picture better than the auto.
We had just drifted past a couple of lumps I marked where I'd pulled up a Dhuey and a Blackarse and hit some baron ground before this popped up. My thoughts are that I hit some gravel holding a school of snapper... sadly I'll never know as the bite was very slow that morning on account of fishing 2 hours after the low tide.
