Latest Custom rod
Submitted by Bunny on Sun, 2015-10-18 13:48Here's a fantastic 50lb Samurai Jig 8 rod recently built. The blank was 88 grams and at 6 feet long with that rating it's a gem. I cut this one down a few inches. Custom grips with a fancy Alloy reel seat and metal trim ring and the final rod weight still came up at only 266 grams.
Guides are Fuji Titanium K frames so a fair amount of money there alone. Gudebrod metallic threads (Silver metallic is Fishhawk). I'm loving the colours and very jealous I have to give this one to my mate.

Flathead Lures
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2015-10-18 11:35Just bought my self a new Starlo & Stradic outfit. I'm very fortunate to live right on the beach in Silver Sands but do most of my fishing from my boat. The new gear should inspire me to do a bit more beach fishing. Generally in summer there are plenty of tailor but mostly they are under or only just size. Amongst them are a few good size flat head. Up to now they've been an occasional by catch using bait but I would like to target them a bit more.
Lure fishing would be more fun but i dont have much of a clue what to use
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Knobs on the river
Submitted by Pitty on Sat, 2015-10-17 20:27I was down the river today with the kids at sandy beach Bassendean and the amount of guys smashing past at 20 knots plus was unbelievable. I think the 5 knot speed limit is nuts, but with kids in the water, maybe 10 knots would be suitable. I reckon marine and safety could clean up parked up that end of the river.
seperatly, someone had left a full hand reel with a running sinker hooked to a tree which one of my boys got caught on, people need to clean up there rubbish.

Shore Catch Gains Planning Approval + the "Super Shredder"
Submitted by Mick C on Fri, 2015-10-16 21:07I am pleased to advise that Shore Catch gained formal planning approval from the City of Wanneroo for the establishment of various commercial uses at 7 / 65 Buckingham Drive Wangara. The approval allows Industry (fish processing, amongst others), Warehouse (storage and distribution of goods), Showroom (display of goods for retail sale, including second hand goods) and ancillary offices (to conduct my technical consulting business also). The approved uses are shown on the below floor plan.
We now have possession of the premises and will slowly fit it out. We want to ensure that anyone that visits will have a good experience so we will formally open when the shop, and product range, is ready (the below image shows the start of the showroom). I do look forward to putting on a sausage sizzle for Members when we do open up, and meeting you in person.
In another development we have commissioned the manufacture of the “Super Shredder”. This machine builds on all of the previous work in evaluating fish frame reduction to 10mm x 10mm pieces. The motor, gearbox and drive cogs are shown below, with more updates in future posts. There are a lot of uses for “the shred”.

A number of Members have asked me about “Shredder for Hire”. The new machine will process hundreds of kilos per hour so there is the potential to shred frozen fish waste for Members with a “reasonable” fee to cover costs. I just wonder if this would be a service that people are interested in?
We hope to open by early December, and look forward to seeing you if you are ever in the locality.
Mick

I was at fisheries today having a chat with the local hot sheiler renewing my WRL license but forgot to ask her, my mind was elsewhere

Submitted by Howesy9 on Thu, 2015-10-15 10:06Hi guys.
Have been looking around for a while now trying to find someone who does custom bait boards in the perth area made of stainless steel or even ally. The only ones I have come across at a reasonable price were over east.
Wondering if anyone has had any luck finding someone over here.
Cheers.

Deep drop ban...Why?????
Submitted by Boppo on Wed, 2015-10-14 20:01Understand the demersal ban for Dhuies, baldies, snapper, breaksea cod and harlies but why for the deep drop fish (grey band etc) that have not had too much amateur fishing pressure?
Be good for the tackle shop economy to not have the ban on deep drop fish and would get more into deep dropping which would take pressure of dhuies, etc, when the ban is lifted.
I am probaly missing something but thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

How far out wide for a runabout?
Submitted by Ashen on Wed, 2015-10-14 19:01Hi guys.
I have a 18.6ft Penguin Huntress runabout with a 120hp johnson, dual batteries, 130L fuel tank with 2 additional 25ltr jerry cans (180L in total). Boat handles wonderfully, and the motor is quite reliable. How far out wide would you take a similiar boat out? I have all the safety equipment; epirb, flares etc.
I am quite confident with my boating skills but the furthest I've been out is around 40mtr deep between 3 mile reef and Direction bank, when I had a Voyager LTD.
Thanks

Deep Drop Report
Submitted by Banka on Wed, 2015-10-14 15:01After a couple of years of filtering through old posts on this site and a few PM’s to Ryan to help build our knowledge on this form of fishing I thought I would share some of the results. The most recent was yesterday with the weather looking ok, the Demersal Ban approaching and a brand new jignesis rod from ocean side tackle to try we had to go. A 20kg grey band jumped on the new rod to christen it and the parabolic action did make it easier on the back.
Below sounder shots are on a furuno 587 with a TM260 tranny. In one shot you can see a double header of pinkies coming up off the bottom. Special thanks to Ryan, Reece and Harro for the information from your posts over the years and the questions you openly answer when asked have gone a long way towards helping us get results.
Also thanks to the Furuno and Oceanside team for the deep drop talk the other week it was a very informative night. We still have a long way to go before we hit fish consistently and conquer all the deep drop species but after many trips the “code” is slowly being cracked.

Mobile Phone Antenna's / VHF
Submitted by Bucko on Wed, 2015-10-14 08:43Hey guys, lately we have been pushing further and further out to sea, particularly with the deep drop, and can be up to 35nm out.
I am only in a 5.6m boat, and during this off season I want to try and improve my communications out there. ATM I only have 27mhz with a 1.8m aerial.
So the first thing I am going to do is install a VHF radio, most likely with a 2.4m whip.
The second thing is to try and get an external antenna for my phone.
I have found a phone with an antenna port, so I will use that, no cradle required.
Does any one on here run an external phone antenna, and if so, what sort of results are you getting?
What sort of antenna will I need to get phone coverage 35nm out?
Cheers

Trail craft trailer modifications
Submitted by chopdog on Tue, 2015-10-13 23:14G'day,
just wondering if anyone out there has modified their trailcraft trailer to better suit driving their boat onto the trailer? I've got a 6.6 Trailcraft and unless it's dead centre it can be a bit if a bitch to get on straight away, and wondering if I could convert it to skids or modify the rear rollers so I could drive it straight on without having to winch it,Any feedback appreciated, cheers.

GME GX600 VHF radio problem any advice appreciated
Submitted by beeroclock on Tue, 2015-10-13 20:44Gday i recently installed a new GME GX600 VHF radio and GME VHF antenna to the boat. I tested it straight away on land (Jindallee) by calling VJ6LQ, the reception was perfect with no interference at all and they said i was coming through 5 out of 5 so i was pretty pleased with myself. Went out of two rocks and tried to call VJ6LQ on the lead line there near the cardinal marker - they could hear me but the reception was shocking - loud loud interference and i could only just make out their reply . Continued out 25km west of two rocks tried to call VJ6LQ - nothing but real loud interference. Any ideas why this would happen?
