Sand Whiting
Submitted by JohnF on Mon, 2011-06-06 19:36Got a nice haul of very fat sand whiting over at Rotto yesterday with my young bloke. It has been quite a while since I have had the humble whiting, chasing bigger prey like maccies and dhu etc for the past year....we only took a couple of flick sticks with us to Rotto for the long weekend as the wind was looking average, but on the way over in the tug we went over a big school of susepcted whiting that lit up the sounder, even at 15 knots....we tested it later with a drop in the wind, and it went off. A fish every drop, and they were all a nice size, up near 30cm, terrific fun with the kids, and left after an hour as we had a nice feed. Unusual to have whiting school so densely...the sounder was even flicking the bottom up 5 metres every now and then thinking the top of the school was the bottom, they were so thick. Not seen that before outside Sambo's.
We just had them deep fried in tempura tonite....wow, cant recall enjoying fish as much, regardless of type. Absolutley excellent. Would rate them right up there!

Kalbarri Holiday
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Mon, 2011-06-06 19:33Arrived here at 3pm. A trip with no incidents although I wont be taking Indean Ocean Drive again. The road north of Jurian is crap!
Weather here is crap. Easterlies and sunshine. It just gets me a bit excited.
Before dinner I had a quick fish at Chinamans. Baits getting hammered before dark. I managed 2 very undersized Tailor and 2 of the same Mulloway. About the size of decent Whiting. The river mouth seems to be a congragating place for the juveniles. In the morning I am getting up early and checking a few places south of the river mouth. The conditions are pefect for throwing anything without weight so let's hope the fish are around.

Submitted by Anthony Hall 87 on Mon, 2011-06-06 00:18Guys,
Looking at respooling my alvey reefmaster snapper winches, they both have old mono on them not really sure what it is or how strong.
Was thinking of maybe heading towards something like dacron, does anyone use this?? If you do what sort of LB rating, want to fish deep 250-300m mark.
Any other recommendations would be handy.
Cheers,
Anthony

Rod recommendation - light spin bottom bouncing.
Submitted by Sammut on Sun, 2011-06-05 13:09I'm going to exmouth and I wanted to take a light bottom bouncing outfit. I have a 6000 twin power and wanted a rod to suit. Something that can handle having a lead weight on the end of it fishing 50-80m of water.
Budget - I don't mind spending a bit of money but was hoping under the $500
Any rods you can recommend?

Squidding last night/this morning
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2011-06-05 09:14Hey all.
Last night after finishing work i asked my mate if he was keen for late night squid in freo and he said yes. So i rigged up and got inthe car at 10 got to woodies at ten to 11 but it was way to windy there so a quick move to the boat harbour and started casting there. After a good 15mins of nothing i was getting bored as was my mate but i then hooked up to a solid 20cm squid that had a follower but it got spooked and swam off. i was just messing around with the other squid and i felt weight so i started winding in and nailed another 20cm squid followed by another 24cmish one.
It was then my mates turn to catch some and he nailed a 20cm one, follwed by 4 runts. I then caught a small one and he hooked some thing that looked to be a good squid but i then sore it was a fat brown blob and thought it was going to be a decent cuttlefish and as soon as the word left my mouth a fat angry cuttlefish was bought up on to the rocks. Few quick photos and was released. My mate then cast out again and hooked up solid only to drop it, this happened twice then he hooked a runt one in close. Hen then cast out and hooked up again this time setting the hooks and landing a Very decent squid of 28cm hood. In then finished it off with 3 more runts and a alright one. he finished off with 6 and i finshed off with 7 my unlucky/lucky number when squidding landbased metro. Finished fishing around 1:45 got home at 3 cleaned the squid defrosted in the shower and went to bed a happy man.
First of the night. 20cm.
Another 20cm squid i like the mraking in this one.
Angry cuttlefish.
My mate happy as with a runt.
My mate big squid, 28cm hood. RIP Yamashita Glow orange Man i loved that jig got me my personal best.
My mate super Happy with the big one.
Not a bad landbased haul if only it wasn't as cold.
The two biggest.
Thanks for reading
Cheers danno

to gaff or not to gaff??
Submitted by grayzeee on Sun, 2011-06-05 08:43i,m interested to know who here reaches for the gaff before the net to land their fish??
personally , i hate the gaff , and will try to avoid using it if at all possible , even when i'm intending to keep the fish.
i know you can still get half of a good fish into a decent size net and help with a tail lift.

Depressing Swordfish fishing program on Foxtel
Submitted by gibbs on Sat, 2011-06-04 18:18Has anyone seen that Swordfish fishing show on Foxtel yet? I saw it today for the first time and was pretty sickened by it. They were pulling in huge billfish, harpooning them, some of the fish were already dead before getting them onboard due to suffercation i guess. The point were i turned it off was when a huge 400+ pound Marlin fought for it's life close to the boat for a few minutes until 1 of the fisherman harpooned and killed it. Pretty sad to see such a monster fish killed like that, it took 3 or 4 of them just to pull it on board.
I think it's a bit distasteful of Foxtel to air something like this in Australia. Hopefully it gets crap ratings and they pull it down. I definately won't be tuning in to it and may even write Foxtel about it.
The deadliest catch on the otherhand i can handle.
