Lure Prices
Submitted by longhairedlout on Fri, 2011-06-10 08:15g'day all,
just a quick question for all the people in the know with the tackle trade.
Is there any particular reason i can buy rapala, yo-zuri etc lures on-line from the states for virtually half price of what i'm asked to pay in tackle shops around perth ??? A good example is the yo-zuri hyrdo magnum's, i have seen them retail for up to forty dollars here, yet online from the US is less than half of that ???
I'm always keen to support local boys and keep my money is australia.... but with the Aussie dollar having it over the US greenback.... can anybody shed some light on why we are asked to pay so much for these lures?
Cheers guys.

Fishing Exmouth in August.
Submitted by terboz123 on Fri, 2011-06-10 07:42Hey guys
im starting to organise our 2 and a half week trip starting late july and finishing mid august.
Ive never been up to exxy so this is a first. With the research ive been doing i hope the southerly winds dont come into affect till september like they say!
Firstly need some advice on fishing the area's generally?what to expect around that time of year?Fishing the gulf? Fishing the west side?
i know its seriously some one what out of a season, but i plan to do a bit of billfish trollling out wide. I plan to get a nautical map and start studying all the areas soon enough
Have a 6.2m Pro Line 21 Walk around to play with up there......
Any one recommend their favourite lures to exxy pacifically.
any advice would be good as i have never been there to this date

New toys.
Submitted by danno on Thu, 2011-06-09 20:44Hey all.
Well after buying a shimano jewel rod on an impulse buy that i never used or was ever going to use i was now regretting it so i rang up the boys at tackle world and i took in my rod to get my money back but i got store credit which i was going to use on squid jigs until i sore this out the corner of my eye. I picked it up, walked away from it picked it up again, then my mum told me to get it while it was here because ive been wanting one for ages so i had another quick play with it and walla i bought it and 2 more jigs. I'd tather have a gaff that im going to use then a rod thats just going to sit there so i got that and 2 jigs for an extra 23 bucks. Not to bad now i just need to get out there and use it.
Cheers danno.
Ps just incase someone doesnt know its a 3m squid gaff :)

twisted leaders
Submitted by grayzeee on Thu, 2011-06-09 13:13terminating a twisted leader!
is it as simple as tying a uni with the open end to solid ring/hook/whatever ?????
also , do you half the poundage required of a leader or can you go a bit less due to stretch??
although a piece of doubled 50lb must have less abrasion resistance than a piece of 100lb no??

Spinning for trolling?
Submitted by bream on on Thu, 2011-06-09 12:26Hey guys, Just bought a lemax slim max and ajiking wahoo 8000 for jigging. Realistically I'll hardly be doing a lot of jigging, more bottom bouncing and hopefully trolling. I know a overhead reel is more idealistic for trolling and even bottom bouncing but could I still troll with an 8000 size spinning reel, or is it worth trying to swap for an overhead slim max and overhead reel just for a bit of piece of mind that I won't get spooled on my spinning gear Thanks!

fishwrecked weatherman idea.
Submitted by JIM1 on Wed, 2011-06-08 22:35just thinking about how everyone trolls the sites to look for weather updates to know if its worth going out. my idea is someone puts there hand up(or open thread) to put a median weather report from one/several sites. be this a full report or just to let people know that one site says calm and one site says high wind. then perhaps find a site sponser to donate a fishing item of low value to who ever gives the best report of the month as a prize?
Ideas/imput?

Recommendation on transom mount1kw Transducers
Submitted by A-SALT-WEAPON on Wed, 2011-06-08 22:06Need some advise guys.
Im going to purchase a furuno fcv 585. Done all the research looks like they're still the best on the market. Now that ive decided on the brand of sounder now comes the next bit.....Tranducers.. Done a heap of research on these as well (transome mount) and im steering towards the 1kw airmar tm258... Biggest question that looks like that gets asked is what depth will you be mainly fishin in? Most of my fishin gets done between 30 to 90metres mainly in the 40 to 50metre mark. Now i can go a 600watt transducer but hay the furuno can push out 1kw better picture apparantly so why not bugger the expense. Its gettin put behind a 6.2m ally they look like a footy there huge.
The choices i have are the tm258 the tm260 or the tm270
My thoughts are at 200kz that the tm270 is to wide of an arc at 30metre depth your looking at a 14m diametre, i think it's to big. The tm260 at 30metre depth your looking at a 1m diametre which seems quite small and only till you get out to 90 metre it gets to 3metre diametre thats a lot of circle work. The tm258 is more of a oval shape at 30metre i think it goes 1metre long by 2.7metre wide the next bit of info is at 122metres deep its 6metre long by 11metre wide
Ive spoken to Tailor Marine and they say there most popular seller is the tm258.
I would like to know if what your thoughts are on these transducers who's running what and how do you like them. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

rod for callisto
Submitted by JIM1 on Wed, 2011-06-08 12:03got given a callisto bait caster a few years back and thought its about time to marry it up to a rod, what i dont have atm is a gp rod that would be good enough for salmon, is it do-able to get a rod around the 8ft 8kg mark to marry up with this reel or should i give up now? planning to throw metal lures, bait cast mulies, standard rigs and have this as primarily a gp beach rod...
Thanks

Rod advice for 8-10' heavy spin
Submitted by flangies on Tue, 2011-06-07 21:21Hey guys I have a trip to Quobba coming up and I'm after a few more rod options for what to buy, budget isn't really
An issue provided it's quality but I'd prefer to keep
It under $400 it will be for pe 3/4 spinning with metals mainly. Pretty confident I'll
Be sticking a saltiest 4500 on it if anyone has a second hand one they would like to offload, or a combo for that matter.
At the moment I'm pretty keen on the Demon blood 962MH which is rated 2-4, does anyone have one and how do they rate it?
Or what do you use and why?
Thanks in advance

Garmin Fish Finder Help
Submitted by dunkyboy on Tue, 2011-06-07 21:15can anyone point me in the direction of a good website that will help me understand what I am seeing on the screen of the fish finder/sonar, we were out yesterday in the Cockburn sound and at one point the Garmon was showing loads of fish symbols in around 3 meters, there were quite a few jellyfish in the water, could this have been what we were seeing on the screen ? also we came across an area which started showing long vertical lines on the screen, not too sure what this means ?
have only had the boat for a few months so have never used a fish finder before, the manual does not have much information in it at all, I would appreciate any info anyone can offer
cheers

Exmouth Paradise!!!
Submitted by Bloodshot on Tue, 2011-06-07 20:055 workmates and I spent 4 Days aboard "PARADISE", fishing for some Billfish off the beautiful Exmouth coast. We were not dissapointed at all. Josh from On Strike Charters was ledgendary and really put us onto the fish, His ability to read the water, birds, bottom and weather was second to none. 6 of us went up for the 4 days and all 6 of us landed our first ever billfish in the first 3 days of fishing. 4 Black marlin, 1 Sailfish and 1 striped Marlin. Was the trip of a lifetime. we also landed Dollies. Yelolowfin Tuna, Spanish Mackeral and Wahoo. Could not have been better. Cant wait to be able to do it all again.

Sand Whiting
Submitted by JohnF on Mon, 2011-06-06 19:36Got a nice haul of very fat sand whiting over at Rotto yesterday with my young bloke. It has been quite a while since I have had the humble whiting, chasing bigger prey like maccies and dhu etc for the past year....we only took a couple of flick sticks with us to Rotto for the long weekend as the wind was looking average, but on the way over in the tug we went over a big school of susepcted whiting that lit up the sounder, even at 15 knots....we tested it later with a drop in the wind, and it went off. A fish every drop, and they were all a nice size, up near 30cm, terrific fun with the kids, and left after an hour as we had a nice feed. Unusual to have whiting school so densely...the sounder was even flicking the bottom up 5 metres every now and then thinking the top of the school was the bottom, they were so thick. Not seen that before outside Sambo's.
We just had them deep fried in tempura tonite....wow, cant recall enjoying fish as much, regardless of type. Absolutley excellent. Would rate them right up there!
