Fish Eyes
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Sat, 2011-01-22 15:24A comment made on the post re Rachels Dhui got me to thinking
I've watched many fishing shows (can't get out to do it myself atm) and i see fish after fish brought up from the 'deep' But they never cover the eyes, even though they are goiong to release the fish
Surely fish fro,m the deep are going to suffer being displayed in bright sunlight (and not even being able to breath)
Wouldn't their eyes be permanantly damaged after that bright sunlight, possibly the first ime ever?
Curious

Interesting Days Fishing
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2011-01-22 08:59Went out for a morning jig sessiion with my young bloke, and saw JustOneMoreCast while we were out.
Wind was higher than expected, and we started the morming hiding in a bay at rotto having a squid while we waited for the wind to die down. Only one sqid...
Headed out after an hour in the bay, and drifted some lumps I have fished before as well as a few cray pots in the 40's.
Both me and the young bloke were demersal jigging.....first tiime flor the young bloke, not sure he is hookeed yet as he gave up after an hour and went to bait. I jigged all morning before the wind got too much and we headed home.
Second drop for me, nice strike, dogged fight with small runs to the bottom, and I thought this was a good size du, then after a few minutes it went bezerk and realised I had a good sambo. Oceajigger equitted itself well to boat a pretty nice size sambo on PE3. The smabo was excorted by a small shark all the way to the surface, I could have touched it as I pulled the sambo in the boat....he did not touch the sambo as the sambo was a bit big, but sharks are still around......

Few other bits and bobs on jig (goatfish and several bakers) before we moved to a few cray pots right on top of an old spot I had done well at before......dropped a nice fish when it pulled the hooks after touching a cray rope on the way in, then the young bloke got our feed for tonite with a nice pair of breaksea cod.
We were going to have a run out to the barges wiith justonemorecast but the wind picked up much earlier than seabreeze indicated, and we only got 1.5 hours of fishing wirth a reasonable drift rate in so we started to head home.
Spotted a nice school of tuna with plenty of free jumping fish.....soft plastic on light gear got smashed as soon as it hit the water and after a pretty lengthy fight, a nice SBT was circling next to the boat. After 4 attempts at netting the crafty tuna, the hooks pulled, which saved me from releasing it.
My young bloke Rob then spotted what we thought was a sunfish, which trned out too be a nice hammerhead.....oiut with the PE5 jig gear and I put on a half a wrasse on the assist hook ad set it out......the dissapearance of the seaglls on te surface a minute later suggested te shark was nearby and he soon hooked up, only to spit the hook. He circled the bait a few times, darting in and out, before taking it again about 100m from the boat. Awsome! He then proceeded to strip line form the Stella at a rate of knots, so Rob started te boat and we chased it down for 5 minutes.
Finally got it to the boat and after 10 minutes of wrestling the beast, even managed to get the hook out, as it was in his hammer......was a nice size fish, and was a tad worried about loosing my hand but the extra long pliers came in handy. The hammerhead swam off happily.

So, pretty mixed day, but good fun.

Soft Plastics Day off the Cape
Submitted by Seaquest on Fri, 2011-01-21 20:13Headed out for a fish today off Cape Nat. Decided to give the SPs a go today as the conditions where great and I had a new SP combo that I had not use as yet.
After a bit of sounding a few fish where located and down went the SPs. Wasn't too long before Clint was on.

Not long after a good fight on the light gear Clint landed the first dhuy of the day.

After a couple of more drifts and not much luck we moved on to another spot. As approaching the ground we came across some more fish on the sounder.
Down went the SPs and Clint was on again. Another good fight resulted in another dhuy.

With our dhuy limit reached and it still being early we decieded to sound around for some more ground. I also was to still pretty keen to boat my first fish on a SP.
Wasn't too long before we came across some good ground with a few fish showing on the sounder.
Down went the SPs again and after a couple of drifts you wouldn't believe it but Clint was on again. This fish went hard and again Clint had another dhuy boat side which was the biggest of the day.
This fish was left in the water, dehooked and sent back down within minutes of being landed for a successful release.

Decided to go over where Harro was fishing and see what he was up to. On our way we came accross some more good ground with fish on it.
Down went the SPs again and this time it was my turn. Not a dhuy but a nice BB and my first fish caught on a SP.

Decided to give it one more drift as I was keen to catch my first dhuy on the SPs.
Well it wasn't too long before Clint was on again. Another solid dhuy was brought up and quickly released.
As you could image I was a little bit cut at this stage with Clint having caught 4 dhuys on SPs to my one BB.
With sea breeze on its way in it was time to head home. Guess I'll have to wait to the next trip before I get my first dhuy on a SP.

Damage to skeg
Submitted by Tandawg on Fri, 2011-01-21 16:11I have sustained a small chip about the size of a 10c piece at the front of my skeg.
Its going to be a claim through insurance so I need some advice on what to do.
1. Do I replace the whole bottom end of the gear box?
2. Can panel beaters apply some bog and then spray Yamaha grey on?
Obviously 1 is the more expensive option, but as insurance is involved - doesn`t really matter.
Insurance told me to get one quote but don`t know where to start my search.
Thank you

Fishers banned and fined for pulling “other fishers’ pots
Submitted by hezzy on Fri, 2011-01-21 11:59
The Department of Fisheries has welcomed a magistrate’s decision to ban two men from fishing
for 12 months and the big fines imposed on them, for illegally pulling other fishers’ lobster pots.
In Fremantle Court this week (Tuesday 18 January 2011), Magistrate Robert Lawrence ordered
the men to pay fines, penalties and court costs of $6128.40 each, after they pleaded guilty to
seven charges against both of them.
Magistrate Lawrence also warned the men that, if they breached the order preventing them from
being involved in any fishing activity for a year, they would be committing a further offence and
would be liable to a potential fine of $10,000 and six months imprisonment.
Jose Manual ROCHA of Fremantle and Joao Garces GONCALVES of White Gum Valley were
fishing near Rottnest on the 29
th and 30th of March, when Fisheries and Marine Officers observedwww.fish.wa.gov.au.
the men pulling a total of 19 recreational rock lobster pots.
Acting North Metropolitan Compliance Manager Ryan Parker said not only had the pair pulled
more than the daily limit of four pots, our investigations quickly determined that some of the
pots did not belong to them and they had not been given permission by the lawful owners to
retrieve them.
“We get a lot of calls from rock lobster fishers, who suspect their pots have been interfered with,
so this is a warning to wrong-doers that we can and will pursue those who fish illegally in this
way,” Mr Parker said.
“When they were apprehended at the Leeuwin Boat Ramp, the men had also knowingly
concealed excess catch and undersize fish. The magistrate said all the offences were very serious
and the pair had shown a blatant disregard for the law. The big fines and the fishing ban he has
imposed deliver a significant outcome that will be a major deterrent.”
In other fisheries cases before the Fremantle court this week, three men caught in a crab fishing
blitz at Woodman’s Point in February and March of 2010 were issued with fines, penalties and
court cost bills, for a range of offences related to size and bag limits.
Scott David HANRAHAN of South Lake pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $1679.20,
Raymond John MILLER of Fremantle must pay $2,719.20 plus a further $1759.20 for crabbing
offences that occurred two weeks apart and Drew Craig TEAGUE of Kardinya, who was fishing
with Miller on the first occasion, was ordered to pay $2719.20.
More details about the rules for recreational rock lobster and crab fishing are available from the
Department of Fisheries’ website at

Well done fisheries
Submitted by tailor marc on Fri, 2011-01-21 00:04Just spent this arvo/ night fishing down the river.
Noticed some guys catching undersized crabs and keeping them. They "wernt australian" and didnt speak a work of english so i thought i would ring fishwatch ph: 1800 815507
The lady took my details and within 30min i had fisheries officer ringing my mobile saying they were coming down. Not long after they did rock up and walked strait up to the guys and went through there stuff. They gave them a good lecture chucked the undersized crabs back and looked like they got some warnings or fines.
I acually think that the offenders didnt know the sizes etc but now they do.
It was really good to see them come out and responding to the calls..
Well done!!!!!
Take down that number and if you see anything suspicious or people doing the wrong thing then call them

esperance from 2 weeks ago
Submitted by fishing94 on Thu, 2011-01-20 20:49day 1) we got to the pink lake caravan park around 1 we were already to unpack the stuff and get the boat on the water to go and have a look around. soon as were we unpacking stuff my dad seen some stuff leakin from the car so we popped the bonnet up and there was a huge hole in our one of our hoses we were surprised that we did'"nt break down. so after we unpacked we shot of to repco in my aunty's car when we got back my dad fixed it in about 20 minutes. so now we were ready to go.
we got to the baot ramp around 3, once the boat was in we headed of, once we got out of bandy creek boat harbour and we were headin for the island at first it was a bit spooky because the water wasant that deep but very dark blue after drivin around the closest islands for a bit my dad asked me if i wanted to troll a lure. so i did 10 minutes later i got a hit so i wound it in and it was a 70cm snook winding these things in is like having a leaf on the end of your line. so after that we decided to bottom bounce after we got nothin so we headed back home.
day 2) got up at 4 in the morning ready to head deep, an hour later we were 40km off the coast goin past some big island so if you juresic park these island are for you. finally after an hour and half of driving around we decided to bottom bounce it was about 40-50meters of water first dropped a had some massive bites but nothin for an hour so we decided to go some where else. after tryin 4 spots wid no luck we anchored next to a reef. first drop i hook something got it to the top and it was a wrass we were so happy not!!!. so after catchin slimy cod and wrass i got boored so i chucked on a lead head marabu jig first drop just jigging the jig around a little bit untill it felt like a big bit of sea weed on the end of my line. so i kept on windin and finaly got it to the top and it was a big cuttle fish it was my first and the first thing on my marabu jig.
after the cuttle fish i caught we headed in more closer to one of these other island. here we were shelted from 30 knot winds. after 10min of burlying up there was tons of sweep, herring and skippy all around the back off the boat me my brother and dad were castin unweghted squid tenticles on a little bait holder hook and windin in fast and we would get herring mainly but we got a few sweep and skippy. but my aunty decided to stay on the bottom she god some little bites so she set the hook in the fish wasant much of a fighter tho but once to the top it was a western devil fish one of the prettiest fish ever. after that we had enough of the herring so we decided to fish the bottom. it didnt take long untill i got a massive bite now this thing was fighting once to the top it was a flat head this flathead was red had a skinny mouth and was 70cm the strangest flathead ive ever seen.
once back at the boat ramp there was a few blokes at the cleaning table we had a look in the esky and bucket and asked them how many fish they got and said they got 4 BB,3harliqiun and 40 nannagai and swallow tail u could see the amount of swallow tail and nannagai they got from all the fillets they had. there were 4 of them fishing and 2or3 would of been enough for each bloke but not 40 every day they were sayin they get.
day 3) decided to head to the beach for a quick fish once we were there i started throwing around a little gold slice after awhile it got booring catching herring again so headed back home and just sleeped for the rest of the day.
day 4) it was blowing gale could not go out in the boat because it was so windy so i headed to the jetty first cast with squid jig got the biggest squid i hav ever caught once up put it on the fish measure and from the back of the squid to candles it went 91cm it was a jaw dropper the eyes were nearly bigger than a golf ball after that had enough of the wind so headed back. once back we looked at the weather it was supposed to be good the next day so now i was excited.
day 5) woke up at 4 again this time we were headed 50kms of the coast todays swell was atleast a 4 meter swell so we knew it was tuna time so chucked out my nills master lure half way around the reef had a huge hit my line was peeling of my spool this thing just had one big run it then was just dead weight and a few head shakes after winding in for about 10 minutes the fish got to the boat it was souther blue fin tuna once in i weighed it and it was 12-13lb so we chucked him in the ice box. an hour of trolling and catchin leaves (snook) we decided to drift some good ground it didnt take long untill my aunty hooked something good this thing was a fighter once to the boat it was a skippy it went 50cm so we chucked him/her in the ice box. it did'nt take long untill i had a few good bites so i set the hooks in this one all of a sudden my 20lb fins braid on my stradic 4000 stated to peel off so quick after my reel was just about nearly 8kilos of drag finnaly it gave up i thought it was another tuna because of the big run and then stoped but no once to the boat it was a huge skippy once in the boat i weighed it and it weighed 7 kilo i was so lucky i did not get spooled.
after that day we ended up with 2 skippy,1 harliquin,2nannagui,1BBand 1 tuna
day 6) we decided we had, had enough of the wind so we headed home

Brucesta's New Boat - Las Vegas
Submitted by Brucesta on Thu, 2011-01-20 17:14Well i wasn't going to buy a new boat until we sold one of our houses but this beasty came up and i couldn't pass it up. I decided not to go new again as that was just a hassle and really for the price i paid i've saved a bunch, I was set on a new Chivas 206 in a centre cab config then it got too expensive, the mrs then found a second hand Mustang Tournament locally here which looked the goods and i made enquirys but after reading on the net the early hulls weren't very dry at all, something i'm trying to get away from so out of sheer curiosity i went searching for other 5.8m-7m boats in a centre cab config and sure enough this came up.
Purchased new in 2010 the hull is a little older but the motor has 40 hours on it, all the options ticked and at a very good price at $74000 after negotiation, he was selling due to his want to permanantly have a boat in the water (lives on the dawesville canals) and so he didn't want a trailer up the side of the house and then have to antifoul the boat, he originally purchased it after owning a 685 outsider but he wanted a smaller boat to tow north which never happened. bank approved the loan and i'm off to do the paper work this weekend while i'm down and then pick it up the following weekend after another long drive in the 4x4.
I've named the boat Las Vegas as i was lucky to see it, took a gamble on getting the finance and won and now to roll the dice on catching some fish.

Onslow gets cyclone shelter
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2011-01-20 10:07Brendon Grylls
Minister for Regional Development; Lands; Minister Assisting the Minister for State Development
Thu 20 January, 2011
Portfolio: Regional Development
Onslow residents have a secure place to shelter from cyclones thanks to a $7million State Government Royalties for Regions investment, which has funded the building of a multipurpose facility that doubles as a major recreation and community centre.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the facility was designed for its dual purpose and was an important part of the long-term strategy to create sustainable communities in the Pilbara.
“This building is a great example of why the Royalties for Regions program is so important in addressing the long-term needs of regional communities like Onslow which are so often marginalised because of their isolation,” Mr Grylls said.
“Given the current threat of cyclones off our coast at present, and recent flooding in the Gascoyne, this development is a timely reminder of the needs of communities throughout our State.”
Onslow is situated in the centre of what is known as Cyclone Alley. It is subject to up to six cyclone warnings each summer and averages a direct hit every two years.
Previously, the only evacuation point for the 750 permanent residents was a single classroom at the Onslow Primary School which holds fewer than 50 people.
However, the centre will not only cater for the residents during cyclones, it allows locals to play sport year round in a town which swelters through most of the year.
Temperatures in Onslow average above 35 degrees for almost half the year, and for 30 of those days, it rises above 40 degrees.
The centre contains a gym, as well as a modern basketball court with an electronic scoring and shot clock. There will be netball, volleyball and badminton courts as well as an indoor cricket pitch and a day care centre.
North West MLA Vince Catania said the development of the Onslow Community Centre provided a secure evacuation point for the town and would meet critical social needs that had been lacking for years.

Cutting between deck and hull?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2011-01-20 08:36Hi Guys,
After some advice here - My sounder is erratic, as it is mounded on the transom of my boat, but I cant get it submersed properly because the hull is stepped, and at an angle. I want to do a through hull mounting on the transducer, so I would need to cut through the fibreglass deck(may be plyboard between?) and make a "hatch" to access the hull - I have a 6,1 m Guardian, and the guy I bought it from, said it had a sealed hull, with compartments to stop the boat from sinking if the hull got damaged? It has a bung in this cavity on the transom, and collects about a litre of water on a full days trip, so I suppose this could be true.
If I need to cut through the hull, I would like to add an underfloor petrol tank, to get the 3 loose plastic tanks off the deck and make space for my Esky/gear, and seal up the under deck compartments to retain the bouyancy - I know it would be less, but would polystyrene pushed into these cavities not do the trick?
So the end result would look like a hatch on the floor, with the transducer and fuel tank below it - see the thread on Fraser 626 - 2nd Photo.
Has anyone gutted a Guardian before, or even better, does anyone have the plan of the underfloor setup? Is it ply covered with a layer of FB or just FB, are there struts or compartments below the deck, and are these for strength to keep the boat together, or just for bouyancy? Any Do's or Dont's regarding this type of mod? Will my current Hummingbird 565C transducer work through the hull? Anyone know where to get around 80L fuel tank for a boat?(for V shaped hull). What material would be best for the hatch cover, as we would be walking over this all the time?
Anyone want to do this job for a fair price - during the coming winter?
Any help and advice will be appreciated.

Overwhelming interest shown in developing Karratha into a major city
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2011-01-19 09:29Overwhelming interest shown in developing Karratha into a major city
Portfolio: Regional Development, Lands
A total of nine leading Australian and international property developers have formally expressed interest in taking on a landmark project to dramatically accelerate the State’s Pilbara Cities’ vision to transform Karratha into a city of at least 50,000 people.
Following an Expression of Interest (EOI) process late last year, the nine groups have applied to develop up to five parcels of prime land in Karratha’s city centre covering almost six hectares and a further 160 hectares of residential land at coastal Mulataga.
Once developed, Mulataga will be a premium coastal residential suburb of more than 2,500 dwellings, linking Karratha directly to the sea. The rush by developers follows an announcement by the Finbar Group late last year that work on the town’s first high rise residential and commercial towers would begin in early 2011.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the response to the Mulataga/town centre EOI demonstrated that the State Government’s Pilbara Cities’ vision to create vibrant major cities in the region had gained significant momentum.
“Through Royalties for Regions we are investing an additional billion dollars in the Pilbara region over the next four years and this has sparked strong interest from the private sector,” Mr Grylls said
“Developers both here and abroad are clearly recognising the potential a town like Karratha has to become a major economic centre.
“In partnership with the private sector, the Western Australian Government is committed to creating more liveable, well-appointed North West centres that encourage familes to settle permanently, breaking the cycle of a transient fly-in-fly-out population.”
The shortlist of developers will be announced at the end of February, with proponents then moving to a Request for Proposal (RFP) stage in the procurement process.
“Short-listed developers will be asked to produce proposals to create a range of mixed use opportunities in accordance with the Shire of Roebourne’s City of the North Plan,” the Minister said.
“At the same time they will also be required to design a premium residential community at Mulataga.”
North West MLA Vince Catania welcomed the strong response from the private sector and said the opportunity for medium density commercial, retail and residential development would bring the Karratha city centre to life.
