Soft Plastics or metals for Kalbarri
Submitted by Poppy on Sun, 2015-03-15 16:07I have always been a bait fisherman. I have been out with Whitey from Jurien on several occassions, but have now booked to go out with him from Kalbarri in early April. I am determined to fish for the first time with artificials and have 3 packs of McArthy 7" bullhead minnows and 4 metals ranging from 120g to 190g. So it will be a first for me on two fronts, fishing from Kalbarri and going the artificial route. I would really appreciate some forward advice regarding the most effective way to go (plastic or metal) or should I just ask the maestro when I get out on the water?
Cheers and thanks.

Coral Bay Closed Post Cyclone
Submitted by SEAFORCE CORAL BAY on Sun, 2015-03-15 11:37Coral Bay closed post cyclone.
Just wanted to let everyone know despite what you may have heard the town of Coral Bay is not open for business at this stage. None of the accomodation is available, what accomodation we do have is being used by local workers, ses and fesa. It should not be too lone before we are ready to go but at this stage the town is simply not safe. The roads may be open but the town is not. As soon as anything changes I will let you all know.

Shark bay in a tinnie
Submitted by Ovaworked on Sun, 2015-03-15 07:22G'day all hoping for sum tips or general info as I'll be taking the family (1xwife 1x5yo boy 1x3yo girl) up to Francois Peron camping around Gregories At the End of March for about 3 weeks.
The tinnie is our first and while I've fished from boats reguarly they've usually been larger so I'm not deluded enough to think I know everything especially about Shark bay where I've only been one other time.
We have a 12 foot tinnie with a 9.9hp outboard to get out in, so range will be limited, I can trailer the boat to other locations if required for different opportunities or to get away from the wind. I have a lowrance 4x chirp sounder and a handheld GPS.
If anyone has some general way points for the area close by to give us half a chance that would be awesome, I don't expect your top secret spots but even a rough idea would be great. (Pm would be fine)
Is trolling a realistic option for the area and our small boat limitations?
My my son is a mad fisherman so it'd suck if I can't hook him up on some good fish :-)

Water wolf underwater camera system
Submitted by Billyfish2 on Sun, 2015-03-15 03:32Have just been checking this camera system out it looks pretty awesome especially the lure fishing aspect. I'm uk based freshwater fisher so looks great to me but not sure if it would be practical or usable in salt water. Having said that if it was,you could get some fantastic shots of fish chasing the lures or picking up deadbaits especially spanish mackerel or sharks the options are endless. Anyone have or used one ? I'm seriously thinking about getting one. The price ? £117 About $215 so not out of the way.

Demersal Bag, Plus a New Minn Kota Technique
Submitted by Mick C on Sat, 2015-03-14 18:38Headed out solo from Hillarys yesterday morning, as conditions dictated that you must. Always a little bit suspect of a complete “glass off” as experience suggests “no run no fun”. Worth a crack though.
Bagged out on demersals, but the bite was certainly slow. The "better half" was extremely happy with these specimens as she thinks they top the “edibility” criteria. Kilos of fillets vac packed and frozen within hours, and the frames ready to deliver to Fisheries (I have done a “deal” with Fisheries where I can get back my frames after it extracts the required information so I can use them for my burley – it is good to have demersal flesh in the burly). Nice fish and a nice result for our “premium fish fillets” store.
Also picked up half a dozen undersized pinkies and Breaksea. Undesirables included a 4-5ft wobby, a 5kg Eagle Ray, plenty of wrasse and parrot, and those evil red devil fish.
The exceptional windless conditions, and a bit of time, allowed me to give the Minn Kota troll track a test. After fishing with a good mate over East recently (http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/quick-trip-east-%E2%80%93-mackies-pinkies-and-sweeties-north-moreton), I really liked his fishing technique in a sea channel environment and thought it would work on top of the nearshore reefs at Perth Metro (particularly the 3 Mile). I wanted to see if the Minn was capable of navigating a slow “drift” on a pre-defined course - you can record a track of GPS coordinates and then motor back to the start or finish of the track, when in the vicinity, using 1 of 20 motor speed settings. Of course performance will be influenced by wind and current on any given day but this feature of the Minn has too much potential to ignore.
I must say that it worked really well. I could “drift” at 0.4kn using speed setting 4, pretty much exactly on the track I had established. I cast lightly weighted snelled baits “upstream” and they sank slowly to the bottom and hit it just prior to being “dragged” (although plenty of other fishing methods would apply to the situation). I got all the Breaksea like this, plus bites and fish on most casts when over reefy ground in the middle of the day! This Minn Kota feature is quality.

Submitted by beeroclock on Sat, 2015-03-14 12:51Well our Gamex trip has been shut down by the bloody cyclone so gonna spend a full week in Jurien bay cos neither of us is going back to work next week. Never fished out of there in a boat so after any info anybody willing to give for demersals out there like what depths should be looking at etc. Also anybody think its worth a try pulling some big marlin pushers along the bank edge out to say 400+ metre for marlin or yellowfin ive heard the fads are not there any more so any jurien bay fishing info would be great cheers Dave

Swan Bream
Submitted by 420casts on Sat, 2015-03-14 12:13Found a couple of spots holding alot of bream in the swan, not too deep but I can't hook many because of the blowies, I have had success with mulies on gangs, squid on single slightly weighted hooks and whitebait. The main problem I am facing is blowfish, so I need a bait they won't hit that the bream will. Any help appreicated.

Vibes
Submitted by Dkontor on Sat, 2015-03-14 11:49Hi guys, first time posting!!
I bought about 10 new vibes after catching my first rainbow on 1 and spending the rest of the day tying them on other peoples lines only to have them lose it after a couple casts in the weed.
My question is how strong are the tiny metal clip things they come with? I hope to catch several species with them and might even use them for stupid big stuff, but they look so thin that a good sized bream would be able to break them.
Edit: the metal clip on the top not anything to do with hooks
Thanks in Advance

Saragosa 8k v 10k
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2015-03-14 10:54I am going to buy a reel to match my 12' Prevail and have pretty much settled on the Saragosa in the 8000 or 10000. They same weight and same size but the 10k holds about 140y more line and has more drag 12 v 15kg and the 8k has a higher gear ratio 5.6 v 4.9.
I am leaning towards the 10k but is the gear ratio going to be even noticable when casting out plugs and slices?

Cray Pots
Submitted by McNults on Fri, 2015-03-13 22:19Evening Gents,
Just a quick one in regard to craypots out from Mindarie Marina... Pulled up both of mine on the same day in the last couple of weeks and upon bringing the first one up discovered that the clip-under-frame-of-pot-bait-basket-lid was missing after ensuring that it was firmly secure when dropping. Benefit of the doubt given, thought 'ok I must have effed up somehow'.
Upon pulling up the second pot (well over 300m away) found that this pot was also missing said clip style bait box lid. Now without delving into the weather conditions too much (pots were in pretty much the same GPS points as dropped in = +/- 15m), you would have to imagine that this is more than a coincidence.
Has anyone else had this same issue occur Mindarie side of 3 mile reef?
McNults.

Are Western Butterfish becoming a "pest" or are there just too many off them around
Submitted by dragrush on Fri, 2015-03-13 20:41Just looking for some comments from fellow boat owners---- Over the past 6 months we seem to be catching more and more butterfish when fishing out of Manurah and Dawsville --- easy to catch but they become a nusuiance when targetting whiting . We have been throwing them back and although I have eaten them in the past , i cannot recall how they were cooked . Does anyone have some good recipes for these fish and do others have the problem with them.

crab pot trial for wilson & irwin inlets
Submitted by hezzy on Fri, 2015-03-13 14:34not sure how thick the crabs can be in these inlets, but knowing how other places have been hammerd with pots, im sure in time this will also cause issues locally in those inlets

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pot trial aims for crab boost
A two-year trial aims to ensure the sustainability of blue swimmer crabs.
Commercial and recreational fishers will co-operate to ensure the sustainability of blue swimmer crabs in the Wilson and Irwin inlets during a two-year trial project which has begun on the south coast.
Previously prohibited, commercial fishers will set pots in the inlets in an aim to boost the supply of crabs, a pilot project backed by the Department of Fisheries with support from both the commercial and recreational sector bodies.
WA Fishing Industry Council chief executive John Harrison anticipated the trial would demonstrate the environmental benefits of using pots to catch crabs.
"This, in itself, is a rare achievement worthy of celebration," he said.
"It also highlights how the commercial and recreational sectors can work co-operatively with regulators to adapt management of WA's fisheries to better protect their long-term sustainability."
Mr Harrison said commercial licence holders in Wilson and Irwin inlets generally targeted species such as cobbler, sea mullet and black bream, with blue swimmer crabs kept as an increasingly valuable by-product.
"Under the pilot plan, the use of pots will allow fishers to exclusively target crabs without taking other species," he said.
WA's peak recreational fishing body Recfishwest has supported the two-year trial which will undergo a review by Fisheries in 12 months time.
Department of Fisheries regional manager Kevin Donohue said the project would test the method to assess its viability in locations where pots were previously not permitted.
He said if successful the trial could lead to another approved fishing method in the fishery and a greater understanding of crab stocks.
"It's a win-win for all concerned," he said.

Missing Kite Surfer Last Night?
Submitted by burnz on Fri, 2015-03-13 14:00was a big search last night for a suspected missing kite surfer last night off Woodman Point / Coogee. Does anyone know if he was found or if he was already in?
His mate came up to us fishing asking if we had seen a kite surfer alone out there as his friend was missing.. Told him not to take chances like that and call police straight away. If he called earlier they would have had some time to search during daylight!
Quick response from emergency services boats, cars, choppers and a plane all looking straight away.
