Submitted by whaler235 on Mon, 2015-03-09 07:03Hi guys
bout to plan a trip to shark bay, usually go to exmouth but want to change it up and try the fishing out of shark bay. Anyone have any tips or local knowledge that would help. I'm taking my 23.5 boston whaler conquest and want to do a bit of both game and bottom fishing, where are the best areas to troll and bottom fish? Also things to watch out for in shark bay. Cheers

Salmon 2015
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2015-03-08 19:18Hi everyone, me and dad really want to go and catch some salmon on a day trip down south, flicking lure hopefully at some schools on some well known beaches. I've been looking at some of my old Western Angler magazines and saw the April/May edition of last year, which had a salmon atlas of WA which is very helpful. We are thinking of going on the week after Easter (which I have heard is peak salmon time) and having a day trip, leaving home at 3am and getting there for about 6/8am depending on where we go.
the main question is where to go? I reckon we could get to Albany at 7am or somewhere near, where we know fish will be so we can hopefully get onto some good fish. Please recommend spots, not ur secret ones because we all know what happens then, but general locations that we could get to from Leeming in the city before 8am.
If you recommend a lure aswell it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
lachie

(almost) ready to paint - bait table progress
Submitted by randall df223 on Sun, 2015-03-08 17:56
finished off cutting all the holes and trimmed the fixed cutting board to size. drilled through the ally top so that board can be screwed from underneath. fitted the drain top and bottom, bung and through deck skin fitting for the intake. drilled the mounting g holes on the boat and fitted it. Cut the holes for the overflow outlets but haven't drilled for the fastenings yet.
Just need to tidy up a few burrs and it is almost ready to paint.

How much would you pay for 6 scallies?
Submitted by fisharoo on Sun, 2015-03-08 14:19Well, last night I had to look after my boy. After about 4 hours of computer games, I hit my breaking point and asked if he wanted to go fishing? Not eager to go to sleep at 8 he said ok. So I packed a couple of rods and headed to a local jetty. On the way I had to pick up some bait. Stopped at a local servo to pick up a small bag of mulies. It's been a long time since I bought some bait from a local servo, last time I bought a block of mulies which turned out to be scallies. This time it hit an all time wtf! Since when did they pack scallies in packs of 6? Well I had to buy 2 packs and got slugged 4.70 a pack. Got there and the baits were dry, couldn't even put the cubes on the hook as the scales were hard and flesh was squishy.
well on a positive note, at least we were able to pick up bait at a stupid hour and the blowies enjoyed it.

ok So off to try a new spot in Canning tomorrow... what do people think on soft plastics/bait to use (see pic)
Submitted by tassy on Sun, 2015-03-08 08:07This is my soft plastic supply, an a bream hook/sinker rig
So what do people think, upper Canning river. I was thinking Soft plastics, maybe the madeyes, as the bait I have been getting latly from the tackelshops just falls apart soon as it thaws... The Prawns dont seem to hold together at all on hook.
The running sinker rig I have a feeling is a snag waiting to happen.... up there. My only trouble now is, if I use soft plastics Ic ant get heads in em for shit lol... I tried 10 grubs last night, an tyjhe hooks actually ended up comign 0out asides an tails, an anywhere els but where they meant to be LOL....
The Madeyes are hell to hook up, as th ey are really tough an keep twisting soon as you put the hook in....The home made ones on left, are really sweet to rig up, but untested by me yet. Though others have caught on them.
So comments, suggestions, abuse.....
PS, was at Henry bridge at Applecross ??....this morning under it, an the schools of BB were huge feeding off musles on piers....Spoke to an old guy been there every single day for 30 years... he says hes never seen so many in the canning as this year. Sadly I couldnt catch one....
edit
These hookis I got today ater seeing em on a show caleld "The Water" in WA.... he said they work great... But after getting home I remembered he was using mussles... SO I dont know if they will work for Prawns or not.

canning success
Submitted by lachieH on Sat, 2015-03-07 18:23Hi everyone, today me and a friend went fishing from the old shelly bridge down to kent street wier, used the trick of always moving and when you hit a bigger sized school, you stay there. and that's what happened for us. it was very lively with people this morning, mostly fishing. so we just kept on fishing snags for about 2-3 hours, then I found this spot that looked good, so me and my mate anchored up and started fishing, we soon realised there was a sand bar that we could stand on, so that's what we did. he had brought 2 rods down so it meant he had one in the rod holder with mullet on it (so it stayed on fro a while) and casted it out into the middle of the river (usually what not to do). anyway we were casting all through the snaggy area behind us, when his rod just doubled over. it was taking drag like a steam train, even though the drag was done up to what a bream normally couldn't take. he finally got it in, and I netted it for him. his previous PB was 29cm, but now its all the way out at 35.5cm. this may sound like not big for a pb, but for us it is big, our searching I starting to pay off through the canning. we now have an array of different spots that always hold fish. and the best thing is, we have picture proof!
overall we caught lots and lots of fish, ranging from about 23cm to 35.5cm. very good day.
Best of all we made a GoPro video, unfortunately not including the biggest bream (even though the pics were taken with GoPro) but a few were videoed with the GoPro so the video will hopefully be done by tomorrow night!

Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2015-03-07 16:41
While you bastards were out fishing today.....
I was working on my new bait table / live bait tank
made some progress. cutout made and saw inside for the first time and fitted the cutting board lid on that side. drilled the mounting holes.
tomorrow will see the fixed cutting board fitted and if I can find the right size hole saws, I'll get to work on the cutting board drain, bung, overflow outlets and other plumbing.
excited how it is coming together.

Music on the Water
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2015-03-06 08:23Leading from the FF thread what music do you listen to when out fishing?
My young fella (5 years) love RATM so we play that a fair bit out on river (as long as he promises never to repeat the swearing haha) as well as Sevendust or I'll take it down a notch and put on some Crowded House or Pearl Jam. When I'm driving about the Grinners seems to get a good workout as does Machine Head, Pennywise and Metallica however when we are around East Freo/Peppermint Grove I tend to crank up Sepultura, Hatebreed or Coal Chamber loudly just for the entertainment factor of seeing the disgust on the faces of people entertaining guests on their moored yachts.

Deckie available.....
Submitted by Nick1712 on Thu, 2015-03-05 20:39
Hi All,
I know (and understand why) deckie posts aren't too successful on here, but... here's another one. Will be up in Exmouth for a couple of weeks but once I get back I'll be keen to get out and give people a hand with whatever they are up to.
Have a skippers ticket and have owned boats from 7m 'glass to 3m Tinnies. Have a fair bit of gear, with the exception of deep drop and heavy billfish trolling stuff but, even if I dont have the gear to fish, I'm more than happy to take the wheel, grab the gaff or clear the decks.
Would obviously share fuel/booze/accom costs, and more than happy to drive a few hours from Perth for decent fishing and banter.
I work in the city and usually have to cover every 2nd weekend, but, if i'm around I'll be keen for a fish.
Finally called it quits on Cricket, Soccer and Rugby and spending time with the Mrs is driving me mental so need stuff to do.
If anyone is keen then send me a PM and we can have a chat and figure something out.
Cheers,
Nick
Fishing Related Story - Patrons Cup at Jurien Bay
Submitted by Mick C on Thu, 2015-03-05 20:07With the general absence of fishing related stories lately, probably due to the adverse wind conditions at the moment, I thought I might write one. Nothing spectacular but some solid fish and a good experience.
We headed to Jurien Bay last weekend for the annual Patrons Cup. This is an event between the MAAC and Ocean Reef that has been going on for a very long time. It is fair to say the MAAC has won more than 90% of the time however the current cup holder is Ocean Reef. The MAAC Captain was facing the prospect of being the only Captain from the MAAC that had lost the cup on two consecutive occasions so the stakes were high. Needless to say he had spent many hours drumming up members to make to 2 hour trip up and fish for club pride.
I must say it was touch and go. On Friday morning there was a strong wind warning for Saturday and the pin was close to being pulled. The warning was cancelled at 10am on Friday but conditions were still looking very ordinary. We hastily put the pin back in the grenade and headed up, with our accommodation buddies, about 3pm. A nice drive up and a trip to the pub for dinner and to hear that the comp was on the next day (not sure I completely agreed with the decision as Sunday looked much better, but you must respect it and not complain).
Having never fished Jurien before, we didn’t have a clue. We started by trolling for tailor in very likely looking ground, although the Sanctuary Zone markers (not on the GPS charts?) threw us a bit and we moved on to ensure no rules were broken. After a couple of hours on the water it was clear the weather man had completely got it wrong as the wind howling. We had no choice but to seek shelter behind an island and fish in a few metres of water or get blown out to sea. Lots of undesirables, but I did manage to get a reasonable flathead and a just undersized rat sambo. Dean had a big run on a live butter fish but unfortunately didn’t hook up.
The wind “died” to about 25kn so we headed to shallow reefy ground. Prospects were high with a solid bite but the only thing of note was a 395mm baldie that had to go back. Plenty of undersized desirables and what we called for a big lurking cod (we saw it “chasing”) that snatched a few of our baits and fish but there was no way it was coming in. The only thing it did was made us lose lots of gear.
I seemed to lull again to less than 20kn so we made the call to go a bit deeper – wrong, as half way out the wind turned and the sea “gale” came in. Run away was the call and we came in to fish a shallow reef for herring and gar. I did manage a nice gar first cast but when the heavy anchor started to pull it was “run away to the ramp”. I must say that it was probably the windiest conditions I have ever fished and the cancellation of the strong wing warning was another BoM schoolboy error. We watched at the ramp as everyone coming in was “drowned” and boats took 20 minutes plus to drain.
The weigh in was a real credit to the resilience of the fishermen. The final points score was 99 to the MAAC against 60 to Ocean Reef. You were only allowed to weigh in one fish of each species and this was worth a point. Of the 14 nominated species, there were 3 points for the heaviest. The bags were “equalized” so the playing field was level. I think the main difference was the MAAC had 10 heaviest of species, including my near half kilo flathead, to Ocean Reef’s 4. The fish of the day was a near 14 kilo Dhu caught by an Ocean Reef member (sorry for not getting and posting the full results). Let’s just say the MAAC Captain was very happy and the trophy had a nice soft pillow that night.
We were fairly “dusty” the next morning and were set on just going to the ramp to clean the fish. What do you know, conditions were much improved so we decided to head out again (as you do). We were late (9.30am) but greeted by nice conditions where we could head to the 40’s. There was a whole different story here as YPM hooked into a pinkie first drop, and Kev got a quality baldie a few minutes later. After a few drifts, Dean hooked up solid (the fish were a bit “picky”) to something of size. To the delight of all, a nice Dhu came to the surface and the trip out had certainly been worthwhile.
After that, the sambos moved in and we had an entertaining time with them. YPM got a solid one and the highlight was that other MAAC members could see his technique in landing big fish and know that his past captures have been no fluke. Another highlight was a sambo double header that Kev got on light gear that really tested it, and him, out.
What a great spot Jurien Bay is! Certainly worth another go when conditions are a lot better than they were. Nevertheless, a quality weekend with really good company.
And, whilst I am writing fishing stories I may as well post the picture of the 5.76kg pinkie that Dean got in the Bluewater. It was the “winner” for a long while until one 12 grams heaver was weighed in (sob). Needless to say we were happy when one a couple of kilos heavier got weighed in at the end (hard to lose $1,500 by 12 grams). Nevertheless, a good fish and hopefully a sign of things to come when the Autumn weather pattern comes on and the schools of big pinkies move in nearshore at dawn and dusk – can’t wait.
Amazing what the “go go gadget arms” do to the image of the fish.

fitting out my new bait tank / table
Submitted by randall df223 on Thu, 2015-03-05 19:15
I still haven't worked out how to insert photos into comments so I have copied the link to my previous thread about my new bait table and live bait tank.
picked it up today.
Have started the customized fit out.
tool basket and knife sheath fitted.
holes drilled to clip hand towels onto.
bolts fitted into bases of the rod holders.
and started to fit the hinged chopping board lid fro the tank (you can just see the holes drilled in the back plate for the hinges)
on the weekend I will be cutting the opening for the tank, fitting the chopping boards and maybe installing the hand pump faucet.
