Ningaloo advice needed
Submitted by Pottsy on Sat, 2021-03-13 09:19G'day fisho's,
Seeking some advice from those that have been and conquered Ningaloo. I'm travelling across from Mexico (Wodonga, north east Vic) to camp at Point Billie and Nth Lefroy from the start of June 2021 for 6 weeks. I'm pretty sure the trip will be the last family holiday before my 18yr old (who cant be told) moves out of home. Anyway, I'm just trying to make it the most memorable experience he has in the hope he might want to continue fishing with his old man in the future! My other 16yr old young fella is pretty keen also.
I have read a lot on here from Ranmar (amongst others) in a vain attempt to learn from their experiences so I'm not wasting precious time blundering around. I've got a 4.65 Quintrex Renegade with a Honda 60. I've got most of the gear sorted (nothing flashy - Shimano Sustain in 5000 & 6000, 2 x Sargossas in 10000 and a TLD 25 and Tyrnos 20). Ive been stocking up on poppers, bibbed xraps, stickbaits, soft plastics and trolling skirts. I guess the trip is about ticking a few species off the bucket list with my two young blokes ie Spanish Macks, Mahi, Sailfish, Emperor and Wahoo (if theyre around this time of year).
Wondering;
1) Braid or mono for the Tyrnos and TLD and is a steel trace a must?
2) What sort or distance behind the reef (or depth) should I be trolling in and what sorts of speed
3) With the skirts, are there any colours, lengths or brands that work better than others (never trolled them).
4) will half oz jig heads be enough weight for around the reef and are the 5 inch jerk shads a goer or smaller paddle tails?
Not into harvesting fish to take home although I'll be looking for a feed every 3 nights or so.
Any advice that you can give would be hugley appreciated. If anyone is up that way at the same time, beers on me

John Dory
Submitted by nebbian1 on Sat, 2021-03-13 01:39I pulled this old guy up a week or two ago:
It was a fish I'd never seen in the flesh before. Since then I've done some research, and I think it's a bit rare to catch.
How special would you say that it was?
Caught in 20m off Gracetown.

New Boat Wrap
Submitted by Tim on Fri, 2021-03-12 16:48Just uploading a few pics of the new boat wrap and to share some positive reviews for some businesses that couldnt do more to help.
Had the design done by Allen at Titan Graphics after some great feedback from Jon Jarvis. Titan Graphics | Facebook
The team at AAA Windscreens and Tinting did an awesome job of the install too. Found out after they have an inhouse graphic artist that would have happily looked at a design for me. AAA Windscreens & Tinting | Facebook
So much detail in the graphic it is pretty full on up close.

Whats worse than a wobbegong in your craypot
Submitted by Ericl on Thu, 2021-03-11 10:37Left 4 pots in the water after the white run and have been pulling every 3 to 4 days weather permitting and getting between 5 and 8 per pull which we thought was doable. One got stuck a while back and being old and not a great catcher we decided to abandon it so catch has been from 3.
Been using old bait and fish heads, frames etc and idea was to leave them till all bait finished which happened last Tuesday.
Pulling the 2nd pot we agreed it was pretty heavy and hoped for a better than usual catch, but alas, when we got the pot up we saw a wobbegong. Also 3 crays in the pot, so working out how to not lose the crays and also not get bitten we failed to notice that there was not one but 2 wobbys in the pot so there was a head on either side making things very tricky
We turned the pot around so the gate was facing out and manouvered the crays so we could hold on to their feelers from outside the pot, opened the gate and the carefully tipped the buggers out and managed to keep all 3 crays
Was pretty tricky in a pretty ordinary sea Tuesday afternoon
Proibably pull them out today if weather OK at 4:00PM

Annual coral bay trip cancelled due to shark plague
Submitted by beeroclock on Tue, 2021-03-09 16:58Mates and I have been doing coral bay trips annually around May for the last several years and have now decided to cancel and never go again (unless a serious shark cull happens). Reason im posting this is cause its just a damn shame, we use to have an absolute blast every year until the shark problem got worse and worse. Last couple of trips sharks were all over us and it really does start to put a dampener on your trip (if youve been there done that you know exactly what i mean!). Losing heaps of bottom bouncing tackle, expensive lures and great fish (both demersals and pelagics) really starts to piss you off so we decided we not gonna put ourselves through it anymore. Other reason im posting this is that im kind of hoping more fisho's do it then maybe business owners and others who live in places like coral bay, exmouth, shark bay etc start seeing posts like this and really push for action.. Our trips are always 4 boats and usually 8or more fisho's so thats a small fortune of money that will now not be injected into coral bays economy . I also know of others who are not interested in going to these places regularly anymore as well, just a bloody shame, cheers for reading

Metro broadbill
Submitted by resurgence on Sun, 2021-03-07 20:49Went for a look around the FADs today with the family to try for some mahi and tuna.
It was a lazy morning after a big night so we didn't hit the FADs until nearly 10:30. Water temps were up around 24C but water was dirty. In addition to a couple of light outfits for the small pelagics I decided to throw out a bigger lure on a 15kg outfit on the shotgun position as there were a few wahoo caught the previous weekend.
After bagging a couple of small SBT's for the kids we worked our way north along the FADs. Water conditions didn't really improve but we persisted anyway.
Watching the gear from the bridge we got a bump on the shotgun then about 30 seconds later the rod went off. Sarah grabbed the rod and although we had some nice weight we couldn't see the fish. Following about a 10 minute fight we had the fish boat side and to our immense surprise it was a juvenile broadbill!
A broadbill of any size in the daytime on a surface lure is certainly something I don't think I'll ever see again.

Submitted by uncle on Sun, 2021-03-07 05:55W Mayhem at the ramp with the eastern end of cockburn closed off, punched out way out to the forty’s ( forecast was way off) got to a spot with 30 mins of bite time left, I was using a big Johns swing head, first drop a 52 cm dhu, tagged and released, next drop a nice 58cm baldy, only bits and pieces after that, thankfully most boats were in by the time we come in

Metro Marlin Madness
Submitted by Bodie on Fri, 2021-03-05 20:42Myself John F and Daz, put a plan together to have a crack at a Metro marlin on the heavy tackle when the conditions were looking favourable. None of us having ever caught one in Metro waters we didnt rate our chances all that high, but thought we'd give it a good hard crack today out on the regulator
Morning started off shit, getting to the Marina only to have to find some cover from the pissing rain! didnt feel quite right, chasing marlin in winter weather!
Conditions were not the best, and even in the beast it was a slow trip out wide past rotto. Had a quick flick at one of the fads whilst rigging the outriggers did not provide any results other than one free jumping Dolly.
We set the gear, 80 wides to the ready and headed west.
It was quiet early on, water wasnt right so moved around to find the conditions we were after. Come lunch time we were in some warm water that looked fishy. Wouldnt have been 15 minutes and Daz half quietly says 'can you watch the long' (not a normal Daz statement he's usually screaming ON THE LONG) he's seen his fair share of Marlin, just not something you think you would be saying in Perth. Next minute off goes the long, short run and it dropped it, with a bit of teasing it came back and we were on. Fair to say we were all dumb founded that we were actually onto a Metro bill. John was on strike, and onto his first stripey. After a bit of arerial work and putting up show for himself, our first metro bill was boatside!!
Some photos and we sent him on his way, pretty green so didnt take much encouragement to swim off. We were all a little in shock that we had actually caught our first Perth metro Marlin on pretty much the first time out on the heavy tackle in Metro waters.
Spread was reset and the plan was to stay in the water we had located, was still very fishy. Must of been about an hour or so, it was my turn on strike and needed to have a leak over the side. Took the harness off and was having a tinkle when nec minute off goes one of the 80 wide on the long rigger! Whilst im mid stream and on strike, with no harness or gimble.. off to a good start, with Daz yelling "its a blue and its a good one" Sort myself out whilst the boys clear the spread and clipped onto the 80 for the stand up fight. The fish had dumped 3/4 of the 80w (37kg), John quickly clicked the 300 yammys in reverse and we were backing down on a reasable fish. It dogged it out for a bit fairly deep and was probably a 30 or so minute fight with planing the fish up.
Up comes the leader and Daz is to work, looks over the side and looks back at me and says 'its a big fish'... then up pops a cracker blue! estimated at 450lb
Needless to say we were all in shock. We've all caught bills before including blues, but just not in Perth.
Fish released really well, and we went about chasing another. we barely set the spread to have another stripe come up and look at the rigger, only to shy away. Was a fairly action packed 3 hours or so with 3 fish coming up.
Ended the day 3-3-2 Which is bloody awesome in just about any game fishing location along our coast!! Metro Marlin Madness

Perth to Cape Leveque and everything inbetween
Submitted by Swompa on Thu, 2021-03-04 13:08Howdy All,
The 2020 trip to Monkey Mia is back on again in 2021 after being postponed due to covid. It has now grown legs and we are going a hell of a lot further and venturing as far as Cape Leveque over a 5 week period
We have been Perth to Exmouth with plenty of places between. Flown into Karratha and Broome though have not seen anything between.
What must i see? Where must i go? How can I catch a bloody spaniard?
We're taking the 3.3m inflatable with a 9.8hp so will have some boat fishing capabilities.
Cheers in advance

Submitted by dakka on Sat, 2021-02-27 18:15I took my dad out for a fish today ended up being a pretty good day, left pt kenedy ramp at 10 am was a bit sloppy going out, so i stopped at our whiting spot, caught our 30 then headed out as the weather eased off a bit, so we were still in the bite time for today ended up with a nice feed for him to take home, he is 80 and in early stages of Alzheimer's disease
So now i have to cherish these moment's we have together now, will try again tomorrow before he heads back to Northam.
