Rumor.

Rumor has it that Twiggy Forrest has purchased the Lighthouse caravan park in Exmouth and shut it down. Looks like another "Eco Tourism " facility going up there. Damn shame for long term holiday makers & fishos. Perfect place to stay between two boat ramps....

What lures to take to Wickham?

OK, so I will be heading up to Wickham for at least a few months.  I have bought a nice 7 foot rod and abu garcia reel spooled with 14lb 0.18mm braid.  The rob is stamped 4-8kg; 10-48 g (I assume this is recommended line and lure weights) .  I haven't bought lures and tackle yet.  I know from trout/redfin fishing it is easy to get a tackle box full of lures that never get used and a few favourites are used all the time, so, what is essential up there?  What have lures do you find yourself reaching for over and over?  I assume soft plastics, and poppers are useful but what colours and patterns?

Cheers in advance.. Bill

Hillarys Crays

 Hey Guys

First time crayfishing , have 4 pots out from hillarys at the moment, Decided not to put them where everyone else has on the sand around the 12-15 meter mark straight out from the breakwater. Went further up towards the Rotto turn off marker and havent had much luck, in a few spots now. Actually no luck.

Has anyone got some advice that could help me find a result?  I am sticking in the same depths as most other Rec potters out there but no luck.

Cheers in advance

Where to buy foam ?

Going to rip the floor off and replace all the old foam. Wheres cheapest place to buy foam for the boat? Cheers

maiden voyage in the new rig

I got a new rig the other week, and got to test her out in style yesterday. took the boys diving to a new lump we found on the way home the other week.....  the new spot was good!

the boat went better than expected in yesterday mornings easterly slop, and I'm WELL impressed with the new Whittley 2150. the new spot produced the goods too, with 3 blokes on 1 tank each, and due to a miss-count, we got 23 (instead of a full bag), but most crays were over 2kg. biggest cray went 2.7kg.

High fives, and some very cold coronas to break her in.

Sydney fishing charters?

Hi everyone, I am working in Sydney and wondering if anyone can lend suggestion to a good charter over here. I will probably go alone or with one or two work mates, and I am interested in targetting kingfish, demersals, or any inshore stuff, I cant cant a a game fishing mission at the moment. Cheers in advance and tight lines.

Processing Crays

This topic will have been covered here before but with the "White" run just ramping up I wondered how members process their catch - from dispatch to freezing methods. In particular in there anything that can be done during preparation to minimise getting the black blood on the tails when defrosting?

Geraldton and surrounds

 hi Guys,

I'm going to be in Gero next week.  Only have a couple days.

Any advice would be great, are tailor around?

Any chance of whiting on poppers?  Need to tick that off my list.

Mulloway?

Thanks for any information.

Rod ferrules stuck together - try this

The following is a cut and paste from another site.  I recall it has come up a few times on this site so may be useful.

"Folks, if you have a multi-piece graphite rod that's got stuck so you can't get it apart try this method.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy6XQuTlNpI

It worked for me today after I had got extremely frustrated and just about given up, having tried all the other supposed sure fire methods: freezing the 'male' section for ages and warming the 'female' side; twisting and/or straight pulling with all my (reasonable) might with rubber kitchen gloves (this is starting to sound dodgy !!); the four-handed crossover tug (sounds like a 1970s scout camp!); dripping CRC or similar in the crack (still dodgy!!); and putting the rod behind my knees and trying to use leg power to pull (dodgy!).

The only adaptation I made to the vid was to use wide swathes of duct tape to fix the wood to the rod, instead of the electrical tape. Also, I had to work out how to reverse the main part of the Irwin clamp so that it pushed apart rather than together.

My dad predicted the wood would just slip along the rod and the whole contraption fall apart, but the tape held fine.

I half expected to crack the rod somehow, but the very small clamp movements and keeping everything aligned worked a treat. Try it."

Bent Street Ramp

If boaties want action to improve Bent Street ramp this summer especially after today when trying to launch or retrieve on sand, contsct the council raise your concerns and request they fix now. A vac truck down there for several hours will fix for the summer. No good standing on the  jetty complaining. If i am the only 1 complaining they do nothing if a 100 complain they will listen

Crabbing in mandurah

Hey guys. Noticed crabbing season opens tomorrow. Any general thoughts as to whether worth a go, or better to wait a few weeks? Hopefully the extended close has allowed time for a few more moults etc. I’m sure it will be pretty busy over the next week or so!

Conditions this weekend

Hi,

I'm trying to get to grips with checking out the wind and seas before heading out. Got a pass from the wife this weekend but looking at the different weather apps; getting different reports on conditions.

Willy - 15-30km/h

Predict Wind - suggests windy saturday morning and then mostly under 15km/h

Fishranger - 25-30km/h on sat, and 15 and below on sunday

Who to believe!!

Only planning to head out to the shallows for some squid and whiting out of Woodman Point.

Mercury Optimax 225 vs Mercury v8 225 ProXS

For those that might be interested, I have made the changeover to the ProXS.

Fuel consumption - about the same, maybe a little less on the V8, but no oil.

                          Optimax            ProXS

3000 rpm               22knots            17knots

3500 rpm               25knots             22knots

3900 rpm               29knots             27knots

Top speed for Optimax was 38knots (5,300rpm) 43knots for ProXS (5,700rpm)

Optimax had a 19pitch Mirage prop, ProXS 17pitch enertia prop

So the extra torque in the 2 stroke Optimax still provided better speed at lower revs.  At 27knots they both used about the same fuel, burning about 1.2 lites per nautical mile.  The boat is 26.5feet overall but with a 7ft 5" beam, so narrow.  Total weight of the boat all up with fuel but no people and no trailer is about 1.7 tonnes.

I chose the ProXS v8 instead of the Merc 225 V6 as it should be understressed and a bigger gearbox and better torque.

Hope this helps someone.

Metro blue marlin

I'd been itching for a fish in the new boat, and after looking at the water temps and weather forecast Thursday last week was the ideal time.  Hadn't had much of a chance to chase metro billfish in the last 18 months or so and this looked like a perfect opportunity.

Forecasts were spot on, less than 10 knots for most of the day, with only some swell left over from the previous few days.  Beautiful clear water meant ideal conditions for blue marlin.

Trolled around the FAD's for the morning then headed further out in search of the elusive billfish.  As per the SST charts we found a nice temp break up to nearly 22 degrees, and just after lunch our luck changed.  A decent sized blue marlin, estimated around 180kg, crashed the short lure.  It missed the hook, and we waited, hopeful of another chance.  About thirty seconds later the shotgun line snaps out of the clip and we are on.

We felt we had a solid hookup but after a couple of minutes the fish decided to turn on some typical blue marlin antics, greyhounding across our wake, and with a jump and headshake the hooks were thrown.

Disappointed at losing the fish but very happy to have raised and hooked one this early in the season.
