Ideal "allround" Stella

I lost my SW8000PG overboard, and getting it replaced.

However I am an older fisho that dont use that many clubs, and tend to be versatile (but that still dont answer the Mrs question about why I have 30 odd rods and reels, excluding every fly wt from 4-12!!!). I found the 8000 to be overkill for the sort off fishing I do. Not often you need 25k's off drag.

Plus there is a chance I would not be chasing Northern species, and will have to settle with the SW. All boat based use, mostly BB with SP, baits, but would like to get into jigging aswell. Up here only Coral trout and Rankins, but not reds for some reason go the jigs and there is nothing wrong with that, but for the SW the Stella should be up to that aswell.

What do you recon would be the best alround for what I would do. Doesnt have to fit the glove perfectly, because yrs off fishing do make you adaptable.

Just wondering about going lighter.

WA Government announces Great White Tourism including Cage Diving to be banned

http://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/Pages/WACabinetMinistersSearch.aspx?ItemId=150444&minister=Moore&admin=Barnett

WA says no to shark cage tourism

Portfolio: Fisheries

  • Regulations to rule out tourism ventures based on attracting sharks
  • Research shows potential for these operations to change shark behaviour
  • State policy set for potential operators

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore today announced that regulations were being drafted for a State ban on targeted or dedicated shark tourism ventures, including cage diving operations, based on the attraction of sharks.

“I have decided that Western Australia will not be the place for shark cage tourism, like those currently operating in South Australia and South Africa,” Mr Moore said.

“There have been no formal applications for such ventures in WA as yet, but I have acted to let any potential operators know this State’s policy.

“While such ventures may generate direct or indirect economic benefits, there are also concerns that sustained activities to attract sharks to feeding opportunities have the potential to change the behaviour patterns of those sharks.”

The Minister said South Australia and South Africa had cage diving operations at specific sites where white sharks were known to form significant aggregations, but WA did not have any known areas where sharks congregated.

“Lack of such sites in WA may result in operators wanting to maximise berleying and baiting to attract sharks to meet tourist expectations, which may have unwanted consequences,” he said.

“CSIRO research at shark cage diving sites in South Australia found that white sharks in the study area changed their distribution to align with areas of active berleying and, while there was no determination from the study about the longer term effects on shark behaviour or outside the study area, I would prefer to take no risks until more is known.

“With four fatalities in WA from shark interactions, since last September, the Government is not willing to allow any ventures that may raise even greater public fears than already exist.”

confusion

I'm confused. How can a boat that is advertised in a south of the river boat yard have apparently been sold and yet it is now advertised in a north of the river boatyard for the same price.

Deeper Water King George Whiting

G'day this is my first post on this website.  I have been a long time stalker but been a bit slack on sorting a membership out.  I will post some picturers etc. soon.  I usually fish about 25nm north of two rocks and I have been reasonably successful with Dhuies and Baldies recently but I am real keen to change tactics a bit and see if I can pick up some King George next time I am out.  I mainly fish on direction bank (as shallow as 30m) and the drop off behind it (down to 100m).  I was wondering if anyone who fishes out that far has any success with king George or if I am too far out for them.  I understand that you can get them in close, but I am really interested in hearing from people who do chase them out wide.  Funnily enough I have only ever caught one as bi catch which is a suprisingly low rate compared to the amount of Dhuies and baldies we catch.  We use either fresh occy or any of the small wrasses or saergent bakers we catch for bait, usually on pattenoster rigs either with dropper loops or snelled hooks on a wide range of hooks, usually about the size of a hoodlum 6/0 ( alot bigger than a standard whiting hook but everybody tells me they should be able to swallow a hook that size).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Glenn

Fitzroy river

Me and me mate made a spontaneous decision yesterday to go to fitzroy river leaving this Saturday. Can anyone tell me where to camp where the pools are tidal and I can get my 12 foot tinny in. I'm chasin samon, jacks and barra. Crabs would be a bonus please help me

Crushed barbs - Not - Ouch

Now I am normally all for crushed barbs, but on saturday rushed a new lure with 2 sets of trebles on, and didnt.

End result a sharky mack that ate the lure before it was even set for the troll. Got it to the boat and the inevitable. As I was trying to get the hook out it gave a nice headshake and I had a treble embedded in my Right thumb.

No way she was coming out backwards, so removal of ring, cut arm off treble and much to the dismay of the loved one had to shove it through. Not pleasant but you have to do things if you want to keep fishing.

This whole episode could have been prevented with crushed barbs, as the hook would have been pulled back, rather than shoved through.

Now a pathway for infection, 2 holes and a sore thumb, and more importantly a hurt pride that I forgot to crush them. Lesson learned with pain. Using lures, crush the fng barbs.

Surf Shark Fishing

Hi Guys, looking at maybe getting some gear for shark fishing in the surf. I've been concidering a Shimano TLD 50 due to its relatively low price, and as a rod a Daiwa Sensor Surf Overhead. I would probably be livebaiting most of the time, but sometimes prefer casting dead baits and also probably use the combo for ballooning at some stage aswell. Just wandering if anyone else has any experience or ideas in this area.

Cheers

Casting wire leaders for slide baiting.

I know this has come up before but though I would see if any new ideas come up, recently had a few problems with some big sharks swallowing the hooks and biting through my wind on leaders. I find this happens when I use whole heads as bait because I'm guessing they tend to swallow it rather than chew it like a whole fish or big fillet bait. So what I'm after is a way of adding another meter or 2 of 200lb wire before the stop ring to stop them swallowing the whole slide rig. The hardest bit is finding a castable join or even a join from 200lb windons to wire that the slide will go over.

Cheers Chris.
