New Tinny
Submitted by Swompa on Tue, 2023-04-18 10:29Picked up the new toy yesterday. Dont see the point in having heaps of money when we're old and no ability to do stuff so do it hard now and live when we have the ability to do so whilst making memories with the kids.
She is a 7.2m (8.2 overall) Bullet Welding plate boat with 250 Suzuki horses on the back.
We are extremely pleased

Stradic 4000fg drive gear
Submitted by selthy on Sat, 2023-04-15 12:16Long shot here... Anyone have an old unused Shimano Stradic 4000fg (identifiable as white with wooden handle) lying around? Does nit need to be in working order, I'm looking for a drive gear as mine snapped on a recent trip up north. It's an old reel, but holds some sentimental value to me and keen to repair if I can find the right part.

What is Wrong With the New Rules?
Submitted by Mick C on Thu, 2023-04-13 11:10We are putting together a document that details the “errors” with the recent changes to the Fisheries Regulations and would value your input. Please comment below as to what you think the issues are and why the current strategies are unlikely to achieve sustainability of the demersal fishery in the West Coast Bioregion.
Comments are also welcome on issues other than sustainability such as social impact, economic impact, risks to public safety and anything else that you consider relevant.
We really value Fishwrecked members opinions and encourage comments on any matters. Thank you in advance for your time.

Dirk Hartog
Submitted by Richyjerrett on Thu, 2023-04-13 03:39Hey all, I've got a trip for mid June to go to DHI. I'm looking to go after Bonefish. Has anybody actually targeted them there previously ? I've caught them at Cocos and other places but I've never been to the island before and was wondering is it viable. I see from various fishing sites that they've been caught there, more by accident than going all out for them. I'm not after spots or anything, I just want to know if anyone has fished any flats and caught them. Thanks for any advice/help.
Big swell coming - Cray pot advice?
Submitted by steve434 on Wed, 2023-04-12 15:42Hello fellow fishwrecked mob, I'm chasing some advice, I've got a couple of craypots out at the moment near inshore reefs, I'm a little worried that the big swell coming over the next day or so will cause issues to the pots (damage them, wash them under a reef etc) what are your thoughts, bring them in or leave them out? Has anybody else had a bad experience with pots during rough weather/ swell?

Catching Occy
Submitted by Gunnawundai on Mon, 2023-04-10 19:06With the price of occy these days I am going to try to catch my own. Anyone else having a go?
Trigger traps or occy hide traps?
And what about theft? I am thinking to put my cray number on the floats, we know what happens if you get caught pulling other peoples gear.
Comments? so many questions!!

Local custom rod builders
Submitted by chevaps on Sun, 2023-04-09 09:15Hi all.
Looking for some leads on any local custom rod builders similar to the following builders from over east:
https://www.stevessicstixandrigs.com/
I've had a couple of rods built through tackle store "contacts" and haven't really been overly impressed with the end result. (similar experience with reel servicing.....)
Cheers.
Tom.

Monkey Mia/ Denham trip report
Submitted by Sea goat on Thu, 2023-04-06 20:46 Hey guys.
had a week up in monkey Mia, and the wife was generous enough to allow me 2 days to fish! Luckily the 2 days I went out turned out to have some of the best conditions I have ever experienced! Glass offs, not a breath of wind. Have only ever had one day out of Denham before as last years trip was ruined by a cyclone, but was keen to replicate the lack I got last time. Went in with no marks, so was a bit of a learning curve!
firat day out was from monkey mia with the father in law. Headed up to the point. Got pretty excited with the first fish of the day feeling pretty big but the excitement some turned comical when it came to the boat! Lol.
moves positions, found some nice blue lined emperor. A decent black snapper, and father in law scored a double header of ok rankin, bigger one being about 56cm. Caught 4 more about 35-40, so threw them back as wanted to let them grow for next year! ( was only in 6m of water so don't think barotrauma was going to be a big issue. Swan off great.)
achool Mack we're like a plague, but we're great fun, esp for the in law as not really a fisho.
came across 2 big bust ups and missed 3 opportunities on big macks! Sight carded to the schools but for absolutely smashed on 3 seperate hookups! By the time I swapped to heavier gear they were gon. Spewing! But was excited.
next outing was. From Denham. Headed out to upper part of dirk Hartog where I got the Mack last year. Bait everywhere with birds diving but no fish under them. Faffwd around for a while teolling and casting to the bait schools but nothing.
went in close dishes some ground for a nice black snapper, and caught a few baby pinkies, then the sharks started smoking me.
aftwr much searching found some deeper ground. Pulled up nice cod, and good emperor then sharks... lost 2 really good fish so moved in . Disappointing as the ground was buzzing!
found another wicked spot, pulled up a 68cm pink snapper.
then did another drift and got a double header if 65cm pinkies and also the floater out the back went off at the same time so had 3 60-65 cm pinkies flapping all over the boat! Needless to say 2 went back. First world problem lol!
had a good feed and was getting into early arvo so started motoring back at 35 knots, didn't even have to hold the steering wheel!
saw a bust up and this time there were big splashes under! Stopped and cast an unweighted mulie. And the water exploded! 30 mins later had a massive tuna at the boat! Would have been comical watching me try to gaff it and controll it myself! Maxed out my scales which go up to 25kg. Was epic on an outfit set up mainly for dollies at the fads lol! I was stoked! Burned back home with my heart racing.
cant wait to go back!
photos don't do it justice,( note, I'm 6'2 and about 88kg) wife needs to practice her photography but the girth was huge! I'm thinking between 28-30kg.
stipped in Kalbarri for A few night son way back, went spearing with a mate, I need to work on accuracy. Got buzzed by a decent shark in the way in which is a new experience for me which I'm not keen to repeat lol! Not sure if it was the shark shield or the poke with the spear that sent it off, but I swam to shore pretty quick!

VSR Dead?
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Thu, 2023-04-06 10:12My BEP VSR has ceased working i.e. no charge to the second battery anymore but was working last trip out a few weeks ago. When I had it installed around 2017 the guy left the aux wire bare and didnt seal the terminal end of the negative wire and both corroded so assuming the corrosion has worked its way into the sealed unit and just bite the bullet and replace it?

does anyone have any rough prices, and/or recommended brands and installers? I know from memory it was more exensive than a standard suspension upgrade.

All forgotten when we got a size Dhu on the boat!

Naturally, because I am not a moron, it swam away with assistance from a release weight.

Quobba spinning Rod & reel suggestions
Submitted by hairyhaggis on Fri, 2023-03-31 11:02Hi all,
Heading up to Quobba in June, going to be doing mainly ballooning/droning for mackies, but also wanting to spin some lures/metals/soft plastics
Just wondering if there is a nice rod that can do all 3 well? Looking for something that can cast well, and allow me to work stickbaits, poppers, and plackies.
Looking for a rod in that $200-$500 range, cheaper the better, but willing to pay a bit more for that better rod. Would a PE2-4 rod be good enough?
Will be using it to target mackies, tuna, kingies, snapper, spango, etc.
At the moment looking at:
SALTIST HYPER LIGHT ROCK SPECIAL S902-PE2/4
Shimano Coltsniper BB 96MH PE3
Cheers!
