Kalbarri

Just finished a trip in kalbarri which started off with meeting fellow fishwrecked member tangles who showed me what tackle is needed to fish certain spots a big thanks to him then throughtout the trip we had a ball flicking bream lures upriver for heaps of estuary cod and a suprise mangrove jack caught by my mate! We then had to give these kalberri tailor a go, rough conditions made it hard but the gillies metal ended up the goods with a chunky lil tailor of around 45cm. One other suprise for the trip was a giant herring caught of a jetty near the river mouth on a snelled mullie just sitting of the jetty (apologises about the bad photo phone ran out of charge before i could get anathor one)

bream and whiting

Gday members,

Here is a few fish that I though were worthy of posting.

First fish is my new pb bream, pulled the tape out to 48cm fork length, was caught down at canning bridge on a 2.5" zman grub in motor oil 1gm jighead, put up a great fight long runs then turned around and tried to brick me in the pylons, had some serious girth and some awesome bumps on her head.

Second fish is a nice whiting I caught about a week ago down at canning bridge, went 34cm and tasted great, again caught on a 2.5" zman grub in motor oil but with a 1.5gm jighead, put up a great fight, barrel rolling and even got airbourne once I had got it into the shallows, there has been big schools of whiting around the bridge lately, been having a crack with poppers and stick baits with no success as yet.

Third fish is another 40cm fork length bream from canning bridge, caught using 2.5" zman grub in bloodworm colour 1gm jighead, didn't put up much of a fight, thought it was a decent flatty to begin with, just heavy weight, went berko once it hit the sand though, got spiked a few times trying to calm her down.

And finally is a 40cm fork length bream caught underneath canning bridge using 2.5" zman in bloodworm with a 1.5gm jighead, the current was really pushing through that day and was hard to stay in the strikezone with the 1gm jighead always good fun trying to stop a rampaging bream around the pylons, sorry about the photo, still working on the perfect shot.

All these fish were caught on 4lb berkley crystal line with about 15ft of 4lb Sunline rock fluro carbon leader, personally I find that the long leader tends to get more bites. Hope you enjoy the photos and the short write up.

Also seen a few giant herring making and appearance around the bridge, haven't managed to land one myself as yet, but a bloke down there 2 weekends ago did, was NOT released though :/ each to there own though. Spoke to him a couple days later he said it wasn't very good eating.

Regards Matt

Reporting unusual catches to Redmap Australia website

G'day Everyone,

There have been some pretty strange catches lately with the recent warmer ocean temperatures. Its getting to be a long list of species such as cobia, mud crabs, spanish mackerel, dart, spangled emperor, threadfin salmon, marlin, queenfish etc. - all being caught and spotted much further south than their documented range. For the first time we have a way of collecting and sharing these unusual catches and sightings through an Australia-wide initiative called Redmap (www.redmap.org.au). Redmap stands for the 'Range Extension Database Mapping Project' and we are really keen to see and document what fish and other marine species are on the move in WA waters and how that might be affecting our fish stocks and fisheries.

The great thing about Redmap is its a legitimate citizen science project. When you make a report and upload your photograph to the website (www.redmap.org.au), the identification and report will be verified by a marine scientist making your information another piece in the puzzle to determine which species are on the move. So next time you head out for the fish, remember to take your camera or mobile phone out with you as you just never quite know what you will catch. Look forward to seeing some amazing pics on www.redmap.org.au as we kick off the project in WA.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers,

Mike Burgess

Bunbury Dhufish

I was lucky enough to head out with my cousin from Bunno when I was down south over the New Year break. We were after some dhueys and it was a great day for it - flat seas and no wind..perfect day for fishing.

The last time we had gone for dhueys together was up in Gero about 12 years ago when 3 of us bagged out but this time I was going to be happy if I got one.

Lucky for me I ended up pulling up a great dhufish from the depths! It was a great first fish on my new stradic/tcurve. A great day and very thankful for the opportunity to get out.

Cheers!

marron 2013

had a good day on the marron at my spot 9.15 already another two cars there all was good. caught our 32 in about three hours. went home amd had a big feed.

Bream

Hey guys went down to canning bridge last night for a flick. Was chucking some mullies around hoping for a tailor or two. Had a few hits but no hook ups. Then managed to hook something and it took off like a frieght train. Thinking im onto a nice tailor or maybe a small mulloway. Fought him for a few minutes then caught sight of the biggest bream i have seen in person. Landed him and he measured at 485mm sorry no wieght didnt have scales with me. After a few photos put him back and watched him swim away. Woohoo went home a very happy camper. Sorry about poor picture quality from i-phone.

Swan crabs

Not as good as most of the stories on here, but this is my biggest crab ever. 168mm across the carcass and 635mm nipper to nipper.

first fish for the year

went down to a local spot sunday morning nice and early. morning started slow with only a few herring and a small eagle ray.

once the berley started working then the fun began, ended up catching 4 small mullas, not monsters but good to see some small ones around, and fun on the lighter stuff. think there was a school of them as they were on the bite for a while.

pretty stoked as thats the most ive caught in 1 trip

9.1kg Dhuu & 2.15kg BA cod

Cheers Jesse.

New member PB Baldie

Hi Guys , new member to the forum , but have been a regular visitor. Caught this on fresh fillet of wrasse  in 30m metro yesterday, by far my best BC. Half the Fillets BBQ'd up a treat , other half are in the freezer

good catches in close

all these fish were taken with in 8kms from shore and using no more then 25-30litres of fuel. a pretty good effort i think.

Last trip in Pohnpei

Went out yesterday for the last trip in Pohnpei. Nine foot swell and 25 knots - the trade winds are definately here. So it wasn't great but I targetted the many mahi that are here on light gear. Hooked up five and had a great time on the 3-5kg rod in the bit of calmer water we found.

It's been a fantastic three years catching every fish the pacific has to offer. Time to head back to Perth and get stuck into the many fish up and down the west coast.

Dunsborough snapper

caught off dunsborough today. With meat unfortunatly

Festive surface whiting

Catching whiting on poppers is something I've wanted to do for a while and finally got into it after seeing all Callums posts. My brother and I have had a bit of successes over the last couple of weeks in the Mandurah system. We've used Bassday Crystal Poppers, Strada Virals and Berkley Subdog (?) lures. Had our best day the other day catching and releasing 15+ Yellowfin.

Cheers guys.

Esperance Salmon

Had a red hot sesh on salmon on the weekend, east of town...caught 8 in about 30 mins as they came in real shallow chasing hezzas. My young fella, Torin is the salmon king!

pb baldy and from the kayak :)

found this guy out in 25 meters yesterday ....was quite surprised to say the least

My Biggest GT to date

Beat my previous record by a heap. Had scales that went to 22kg and it topped out at that. One happy camper :-)

He was released healthy to fight another day!

local deep drop

Been hitting the deep drops locally for a couple of years now and have had success from Mandurah to 2 Rocks. All are min 200m, max 260m to get the grey bands.

Anyway, as they say the older you get the wiser we get, so I finally splashed out and got an electric reel.

Brett and Tony that came along thought they had better borrow one each too and as it turned out we all ended up with Daiwa Megatwin 1000's to use. Tony was a deep drop virgin and for some reason we couldn't convince him to try the wind ons?? luckily as he hit the boards with the 30kg first up (pic 1)!!

All I can say is never again will I fish over ~ 150m without one. The reel was brilliant and the fish were on the bite.

Plenty of grey bands, pinkies and little reds. Interesting it is only the grey band that would struggle to go back, the others you don't even need the release weight. Bretts came off porbbaly 40m from the surface and sure enough a minute or so later up he comes for the skipper (that's me) to claim with the gaff!!

Biggest in pic is over 30kg and smallest 12kg.

Next challenge is now for the blue eye's and hapauka's.

Being a coral bay person of ?24 years going to try for some ruby's in May too.

Loner rat king

Only a rat, but my first and after a session of zero activity and superb conditions on Monday from 3am onwards, following a more active session the morning before in the exact same spot (few undersize dhus and the usuall reef pests), I decided to cast at a cardinal marker on the way back after seeing a shag in the water and 1 twitch after it hit the water it was smashed, great fun on light gear but sadly no more to be seen after that, prob should av put him in the live well, think he went and told his mates.....pretty stoked to get another species under my belt

What a way to end the year, bronze and blue magic!!!

Spent the days before new year chasing mulloway and diving a bit with some ok results. New years eve I couldn't be bothered with drinking and the hangover so the call was made for a few of us to hit the beach after a final big shark for the year. Had 3 runs on big baits and got one very nice bronzie just on sunset and a little one on a cast bait just before midnight.

New years day we got up a bit late and mate sends me a message "lets go for a dive" Crap ok no probs hahaha, went to a spot close to town with the water being so calm and clear. Huge walk in and talk of how much it would suck to walk back out with a few decent fish. Hour in the water and we said that's enough hahaha. 35kg of fish was very hard to walk out and a huge mission!!! Well worth the effort and my mate Michael got his big blue he has been after for a while. All in all a magic few days and what a way to bring in the new year and end the old!!! .

New years metro tiger shark

Fished a popular metro beach last night..

Hooked up three times, first time rubbed me off on my leader, second bit straight though my wire trace pretty quickly.. third time lucky hooked up to something big, after 2.5-3 hours of fight and it taking me for a walk up and down the beach several times it appeared in the waves. BIG shark was the call so i ran down to tail it and it bit me off !! took 2 of us to pull it up the beach clear of the water inch by inch. Didnt like its chances of survival after such a long fight but it swam off quite stongly once i got it past the waves.

What a night..

Couple from today

Had a fairly quiet day today. Was hoping for some tuna but the weed sent us off the bank and out to the 40s south of Rotto where we found acres of bait but not a bust up in sight. I managed my first reasonable sized fish jigging which I'm stoked about. My brother, the birthday boy, caught a sambo on waxwing, the strike was awesome, and I caught my first reasonable size sambo on a skip-baited tailor in the shallows.

2nd Night in a Row Fishing & Another Good Size Tailor

Went down for a couple of hrs tonight and got this nice Tailor

Tailor Time (Fianlly back into some big ones)

went down to the beach last night, where conditions were perfect for some tailor, i hooked into a few and landed 2 nice big ones, both over 50cm and the biggest just on 60cm, pritty happy with that since i havnt hooked into some tailor in a while

Couple days of fishing

Finally got a chance to get out on the boat again, with myself and best mate/part boat owner taking advantage of the amazing weather we've had last couple days. I'm way too burnt, exhausted, sleep deprived to go into details, but I'll sum it up quickly.. Headed out past the islands for the first time for our first try at trolling, managing a few 1-2kg jellybean sbt, and many rat ytk, which over the two days became my number one pest species. Thanks to the guys that Pm'd me and commented on the thread the other day regarding tuna. Managed 16 squid on the way back to the ramp, including this arrow-head squid?? Can anyone confirm that that's what it is? More jellybean tuna yesterday, plenty of rat ytk, including a session we had on a bombie where they were going nuts for richter plugs/stickbaits, too chaotic and forgot about photos. Caught a tailor which we turned into a 1.5m sambo which was just insane in 4m of water, the gopro footage that I have not yet edited is insane! Has anyone managed any larger tuna lately? Some 4-6kg models would be nice.. Cheers

14.8kg Dhu + more

Hi all

Went out off Bunbury yesterday morining at 3.00am, got out fishing by about 4.20am pretty quite to start just lots of skippys and little snapper.

Was havin no luck at the current spot so moved out a bit further, still not much luck at that spot and only seing a 2.5m shark, which didnt take a bait

we decided to move out even further. Got to the spot and bang, my dad got a small dhu, 52cm, after that a few more drifts, i hooked up to what i thought was a YTK had the Stella 5000 screamin, after lots of good runs a big dhu poped up.. And had a bag limit for dhues.. he weighed in at 14.8kg.

After that we had one more drift, and i then caught a 50cm breaksea cod, And then called it a day.

Heres somes pics

Cheers Jesse

Todays Catch. Wow what an awesome day had by all

Well the weather was beautiful today in Jurien Bay. Couldn't have asked for anything better!

Great day on the water yesterday

Hit the water yesterday north of Mindarie. Trying out the new SS264 transducers that I recently had fitted for my HDS8 by site sponsor Hayway Marine.

On the water at Gentlemens hours of 7.30 and headed out to a couple of areas that we had previously fished. The new transducers worked a treat marking what we believe to be fish at 26 knots in 42m. A couple of drops and quick drifts and the fish started to come on board. First a big Sargent Baker, bait. Second a small (sized) pinky, released. Third a 2.5kg baldy and a stonker black arse. Next drop 3kg pinky and another bigger baldy. Next drop, whammo, 14kg dhu and his slightly smaller mate at 11kgs - all bagged out by 10.30.

Tried to get another dhu for my boy (to be released of course) so he would have some bragging rights and right on cue another big dhuy hit. Got him nearly to the top when he powered back down stripping line off the TLD then bang .  . . . all gone, pulled up the line, looks like a reasonable shark snaffled the lot ! Tried for a bit longer but they had gone off so headed in for an early day and a couple of coldies.

Great day on the water with my boy and a mate and great to get back into the fish !

cheers
