Perth Lunch Time Tailor

I decided to go out for a lunch time beach session this morning and after catching a skippy, small salmon and flathead on plastics I changed lures to a Halco Twistie and managed to get these tailor and released another 4. To top it all off I thought after such a good session I decided to take my missus down there for half an hour on sunset and managed another 3 Tailor before they went off the bite. After a quick change of lures again to a Halco Popper I managed another Tailer and this stonker of a Salmon. All in all, another great day south of the river

Mulloway Number 3

Saw Tooth

Currently at Telegraph pool (Second Night)
Fished pretty well all day trying to catch a Barra, but with the water temp 19 to 21 deg c
it has been a hard slog..
I threw out a live bait at dusk and ended up with this Saw Tooth.. You don't catch one of these every day..
Released without harm..

steep point 2013 full report.

well after a lot of driving from albany for just a short 3 day trip to steep with my mates Micheal, Harley and my brother Aron we where all so relieved to come over the hill and look down onto the point. as soon as we got there out came the fishing gear and the first helium balloon was up and away with a nice mullet bouncing around under it while we unpacked camp and set everything up. after camp was set up we headed to the cliff to do a bit of spinning and after about 30 mins the ballon rod buckled over and i look out to see a fish well over 20kg launch out the water, no knowing what i was i called it for a big mack and thought sharks must of been on it for it to jump and told my bro to go hard and get it in, 15 minutes later on full drag on his torium 30 and penn prevail overhead combo it was close to the rocks with no more jumps before all hell broke loose and this bill came soaring out and a big headshake and ive screamed SAIL, we all coundnt believe it and another tense 10 minutes and we had it safely on the rocks. We all where so excited and just lost it that 3 hours in we had a sailfish on the rocks!!! Best start to a trip ever haha We spent the rest of day 1 diving the shallows for a few small baldchin grouper and some jumbo crays before fishing the night for reefys in the shallows for a few small emperors. Day 2 we spent the morning ballooning abnd spinning again for no result after another dropped sailfish as the hooks didnt set properly and watched whales swim past and a few more sailfish freejumping out to the west. the middle of the day me and michael dived the cliffs from the faultline around to the oven and out to monkey rock but was very quiet with lots of small fish and a few far to friendly sharks around. That night we fished the cliffs once again for nothing great but still had a ball with the cod and plenty of sharks to keep us busy on the rods. day 3 we dived the shallows again for more jumbo crays before packing up and heading home on the 16 hours drive. all up was an awesome trip and we all had a great time but fish where hard to get and few and far between for all the landbased guys.

Two Rocks Tinny Session

Me, my brother and old man went out from two rocks friday morning in the tinny and brother Jarrid caught a massive Baldie and later on we got stuck into a school of good sized skippy. Old man also got a Dhuie 47cm so when we released him he was not a happy man. Great day out since we normally only get wrasse and butter fish

Into the "Blue"

Hey guys,
When I say into the "Blue", I am not talking about the old salt and briny...what I am eluding to is the excellent run of blue salmon we are experiencing in the north at present. The wintery chills may have done much to slow down some of our favourite northern adversaries like Barra and Jacks...but on the flip side, the blue salmon are going nuts!! Such  an unreal sportsfish which fight hard and perform acrobaticss like a Russian gymnast. They are eating almost anything guys so be sure to get amongst them.....but only take what you need ofcourse.

Cheers,
Luke

Topwater Day

I headed out from Carnarvon for a day of casting stickbaits and poppers, catch of the day was this 115cm GT.

He took three goes at the 200mm dumbell before hooking up and was landed on a Stella 18k, PE 6 and a 24kg Tcurve rod.

Half an hour later the popper dissappeared down the gob of a much larger GT and will never be seen again.

Glidin' with the Sootys

Hell yeh for show holidays. Sure I could have went to the show and ate ridiculously overpriced junk food and then been on the verge of puking as I followed this up with a ride on the zipper and kamikaze but you know what – what could possibly be a better way to spend the show holiday than taking an early morning kayak fishing trip with friends.

Ended up landing 5 nice little soots in a few hours, of which 4 of the 5 were taken on surface. Gotta be the most enjoyable method by a country mile.

Was just awesome being out there in a pristine location....

South West Nanny Grabbers

Freakin' freezing start to the morning yesterday, jumpers, jackets, beanies & a new pair of high welly's to help keep the tootsies warm & launch the boat! Well the nyunting surge took care of that as they filled up to the amusement of the boys.

Straight into it, battled the sharks & sambo's however which made for pleas of mercy in those depths

Seaquest then found pay day, check the sounder reading the top of the school as if it were bottom... crazy thick

Pinky's came as bycatch

Last week's Metro Madness (Pic - middleweight)

  Hey Guys.

Was lucky enough to head out last week with my mate Spook. You will have to forgive the lack of details (though im sure spook will be happy haha). All I know is that we left from ocean reef mid morning mid week, i work away so day's off are not hard to come by. The misses has been asking for a while to come out and had snagged the day off too so we were hoping for a big day on the water. The skip went to a few spots and does what he does best, within about half hour my misses had hooked onto her first pinky, around 4kg and breaching 70 cm. That was when the action started, we had 3 lines out and 3 lines ziiinging. All in all we pulled 4 sized snapper onto the boat (only kept 3) in about half an hour and all on light gear so it was a bunch on fun, fun being mandatory.

Spent a couple more hours hour on the water, hooking up some CNR rays, blackarse, bronzy, too many NWer's and the obligatory sambo which is always good fun and definitely gives the light gear a good work over.

All in all, a beautiful day out on the local waters. Cheers to spook for always doing a fine job and the misses (a good luck charm it seems haha)

2 Tailor from last week

I thought while I was on a roll I'd post the 2 smaller fish from last week.
One on a silver and purple Hide Shallow and the other on a Bullchop. Good fun again and it shows the quality of metro fish at the moment.
Samaki Zing rod and Shimano Rarenium 2500 with 20lb Daiwa TD-Sensor braid to a PR knot with 20lb Jinkia leader.

Thanks, Brent

500lb Blue Marlin on 30lb spin gear!!

Hey guys, I posted up quite a long report on an exmouth fishing trip with Josh from Onstrike that I just got back from (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/awesome-exmouth-trip) but was waiting on some footage / photos of a very unusual capture that happened right at the very end of the trip.

We had trolled for two days straight with 6 fish raised the day before on skirts but we werent able to land any which was fairly devastating. Josh changed tactics and left the heavy gear at home deciding to bring out the lighter spin gear and switched from skirts to some skipbaits with circles in hope of getting us a more solid hookup seeing as many of the black marlin the day before had been on the smaller side and just refused to commit to the strike properly.

So again we trolled all day with high hopes, unfortunately the action from the day before was just not there. The whole ocean was buzzing with life and at times we where surrounded by bait schools and tuna bust ups the size of football fields. There just had to be some big predators lurking nearby, surely!!

Late afternoon approached and we decided 4:30 would be our cut off time to head in. Sure enough as 4:00pm approached we had a billfish appear in the spread, but it only toyed with the baits before vanishing into the deep. It just wasn't our day! Almost defeated as 4:30 ticked over Josh made the call to give it another 15 mins, just in case...

As we made our way into shallower water heading back to the ramp with our hopes fading it happened... in less than 50m of water right out from tantabiddi ramp the call of "Huge billfish, right rigger!!!!" rang out. We looked up to see a bill yet again playing lazily with the bait... this was it, our last chance! It took the bait and dissapeared, I grabbed the rod and started to reel - all of a sudden the drag started to sing and we where on, finally!!

Here is Josh's explanation of the fight.

"At 4.45pm yesterday while fishing for juvenile black marlin we had a large fish up on the long rigger. The skipping gar was tracked for more than 30 seconds before the big fish lunged. This blue marlin is estimated to be around the 500lb mark, it took an hour on 15kg (30lb) tackle for us to get to the leader before we released her. We never had more than 100 metres of line out and was subdued on a spin reel, with a 130lb leader. We believe she was still actively feeding on other prey while we were fighting her! She was hooked in 48 metres of water with the water temp at 25.8c. Matt Wilson was the angler and Roger Toma took these amazing pics. Wade Carney grabbed the leader and set her on her way, stay tuned for a snippet of video."

A short clip of the big blue putting on a show:

www.youtube.com/watch

It was such a surreal experience and if our size estimates are even close to accurate it was likely a new state record on 30lb, but I was a lot happier to see it swim off strong to fight another day.

A freakish once in a lifetime fish to find especially in so shallow and something I'll never forget. All thanks have to go to Josh from Onstrike for finding and helping me land this fish. Without his skippering expertise knowing where to position the boat at all times and talking me through how to play it I would of had no chance in landing such a monster on light gear so thanks again mate!!

Hope you guys enjoy the footage!!

(edit: Changed youtube link to new longer video!)

Raising the metro Tailor bar

Got this tailor at 9:30. Went 80cm and fought every bit of it. Knew he was big as it was just a stale-mate for half of the fight, it was an adrenaline rush. Spent my time reviving him and got soaked by waves not that I cared, it was great to watch him dart off ready to get bigger for next time he swims into my range! Caught him at my new(favourite) spot along West Coast Hwy. Caught on the Samaki Zing 7' 8-15lb rod, Rarenium 2500 with 20lb and Hide Shallow lure Thanks, Brent

couple more spanglies

new ground chasing flattys on the bream outfit with little shad lures. no lizards but a couple of small nth westers with this one just passing the 41cm exam. great fun in knee deep water.  I love these fish

Tailor at mid-day

Headed down to a potentially good spot between sorrento and trigg at lunch time for a cast. As you can see by the lure the first cast got smashed and ripped the front single hook out of my new Hide Shallow. Next cast got hit by a decent fish in the white water and he ran hard, went 60+. Next cast and a 50+ came in, then the inevitable shut down after releasing them. Just as well, my 20lb leader was fraid to about 4lb by then.
Used a Samaki Zing rod, 2500 rarenium, Hide Shallow lure
