Using Leadheads for flounder and flathead
Submitted by abandon on Wed, 2007-10-17 11:15Hi everyone
Was mucking around with a few various leadhead jigs at the beach the other day. Luckily it was nice and calm and the water was clear and fairly shallow.
I was casting white feathered jigs and small leadheads with soft plastics presented as naturally as possible about 10 metres into a ditch . I was varying my jigging technique with twitches in different directions and random pauses and I could see flathead and flounder following the jig up into the shallows when it was moving, and burying themselves in the sand when the jig stopped. Some of the flounder followed the jig to within 1 metre of my feet. Unfortunately no strikes but its the first time I've seen them attract anything and it was really cool to watch.
I'm just wondering if theres any advice regarding jigging techniques or types of leadheads to use? I found the white feathered one attracted these fish a lot more than the soft plastic (can't remember the exact name of the plastic I was using but they were berkley gulps and shaped like a small bronze coloured whitebait or blue sardine)
Would love to land something using this method!

Jigging Line WX8
Submitted by Mick B on Sat, 2007-09-29 06:15Couldn't find anyone on the www who sold it so just asked a Japanese tackle shop (blind) if they could supply me.
Found entirely by surfing the net Akihito Marunouchi was VERY helpful and even tho they didn't stock the line, were happy to source it from the manufacturer and mail it on to me half a world away!
I cannot speak highly enough about their most helpful service, I recommend them to everyone who requires high quality service supplying Japanese equipment.
fishing@marunouchishop.com
The line - well its the very best jigging line I've used to date - bar none!!
Smooth as silk (smoother) well up to the claimed breaking strain, and easily knot-able with a bimini.
My Z4500 Saltiga took 200metres and 30metres of 50dacron backing to fill, perfect.

Looking for new reel for jigging, casting
Submitted by Paul H on Wed, 2007-09-12 10:47Hi all,
I'm thinking about getting another spinning reel to spool with 50lb braid. Multi use outfit sought - is going to be used for both jigging and/or casting for kingies and anything else that nessecitates something heavier than the certate with 30lb. I'm assuming if it can handle the jigging (under 100m depth and ussually around 60m and jigs around 150 -200gr) it will handle the rest fine.
All suggestions welcome, including rod suggestions.
- would like to keep the price down as much as possible as I just brought a Certate 4000 (30lb braid) for spinning (bluefin etc) and still need a rod for this and a jigging rod for my saltist O/H (and I've only told the missus so far about the High def video camera I just brought, shhhh).
Better get back to work looks like I'll need the dosh.....
fishing bug has hit again, haven't been on the water since easter and looking forward to summer. bring it on!!
Cheers for any help in advance....

PE jig line failure
Submitted by Mick B on Mon, 2007-08-13 23:14I do a fair bit of jigging (like 100++ days a year) and my gear gets used hard and long.
I buy the best I can obtain, I don't abuse it and I maintain it well.
Just recently I had some Varivas 10x10 colour High Power PE3 1 x 5 x 10 jigging braid break on a straight (steady) pull.
I was using 25lb Seaguar floro leader joined to the braid with a bimini x bimini.
There was no contact on the line between me and the snag.
Whenever I've snagged up before with this set-up (which is 1-4 times each trip) the floro has always broken just above the swivel, (tuna knot).
The disturbing thing about this break is that the braid broke at a point midway between the leader and the reel - on a section that had a yellow colour band, the 5 metre mark on this brand of line.
There was no noticeable damage to the braid that I could see - whilst on the boat.
BUT - this specific line is 4 weave PE.
That means that when you reel it under load through the rod guides it makes a grinding noise.
When examined under a X10 magnifier the weave of the working braid can be seen to be 'fuzzy'.
There are clearly small broken fibres sticking off the sides of the braid weave all along the working length.
I don't know if the structure of this braid has been broken down by repeated passage through the guides, by the environmental conditions, or by the action of pulling for a break?
The reel was a Saltiga Z4500 with perfect line roller, and the rod a Saltiga Coastal with undamaged and perfectly smooth, top quality tip ring and guides.
Just my observations and any constructive comments would be welcome.

What characteristics set them apart to determine how well they perform with both styles of fishing?
And what rod would would make a versatile Spin stick for both jigging and bouncing.

Carbontex drag washers
Submitted by Mick B on Mon, 2007-02-26 07:23Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice on obtaining the Carbontex drag washers to upgrade my Saltigas.
I eventually went direct and placed my order with the people who make em.
What a company, family run, plain shipping charges with no added 'extras', and a superb quick service.
Washers for 3 reels and 1oz of drag grease, all in 'jiffy' bag cost $2.45US air mail, not bad for a flight across the pond I rekon.
Check out for yourself on www.smoothdrag.com

Reel Advice - re levelwinds
Submitted by Paul H on Thu, 2007-01-18 11:58Hi all,
Great site, I am going on a charter off the west coast of Eyre Peninsula (South Aust) in a few weeks and looking at updating my gear for the trip. Will be targeting Bluefin, Sampsons and Kingies. Have the bluefin sorted however am looking at purchasing a new reel for the sambos/kingies. I am looking at the Diawa Saltist 40 and will probably spool it with 50-65lb braid. To be used on a 24kg short stroker at this point however will look at a jigging rod with a bit more length in the future. A few locals have said not to use braid without a levelwind (bad for fingers) but i dont see the problem (hey I'm not planning to grab the line and fight the fish hand to hand) and given the depths will be around 70m max I dont see a little build up on the spool as a huge problem.
All views appreciated
Cheers Paul

High speed vs low speed
Submitted by Nealez on Fri, 2007-01-12 12:41Now a burning question, it seems to be a well know fact that a lower speed reel ie, saltiga expedition is better suited for deep water jigging, but popping for GT's, tuna or any pelagic's a higher ratio would be much more suitable. Now im not a millionare (yet) and in an ideal world id like to own both an exp and a dog fight but ill have to settle for just one. Now this isnt a brand argument, my mind is seton a saltiga but im just tring to decide if i will be disadvanged if i choose one over the other, high or low?? which would be the better all rounder??

Jigging advice from Captain Jeff Rogers in Kona
Submitted by Kawika on Sat, 2007-01-06 02:34Captain Jeff Rogers is a very successful charter boat skipper in Kona. He is one of the very few - perhaps the only one - to regularly run jigging charters especially for Japanese visitors looking for jacks and GT's.
Here are some jigging tips from Captain Jeff:
http://fishinkona.com/jigging.htm
In addition, Captain Jeff was kind enough to answer some additional questions from me by e-mail:
Kawika: Does your fluorocarbon leader end with the black swivel to which
you attach your assist hook? That is, are all your jigs initially without assist hooks and later attached to the swivel with a split ring? ----
C.J.: The swivel, assist hook and split ring stay attached to the shock leader on the rod. I take the jig off to stow the rod. I also switch out jigs without changing anything else.
Kawika: Why do you use a single assist hook rather than two? Is it because the swivel attachment system you use only allows room for a single hook? ---
C.J.: I've always just used a single hook. The Japanese came up with this first and called it a trapper hook. I very rarely ever saw anyone use two hooks but the Shimano Butterfly system promotes it that way.
Kawika: What length of assist hook leader do you like relative to the length of the lure? Halfway down? A third? A quarter? ---
C.J.: I like it 1/3 down. Somewhere in that area. I think 1/4 would be too short and you would miss some (not all) bites. 1/2 way is OK too. I rig my hook length for my longer jigs but when I put a short jig on, it's about
1/2 way down.

Not quite what I expected...
Submitted by Kawika on Thu, 2006-12-21 10:09I went out early this morning to do some light jigging with small plastic lures and light line (15# test) to get bait and warm up the old arms a little before breaking out the irons. My target was small goat fish which my mother-in-law enjoys eating. After about half an hour of slow action, I felt an initial light tugging followed by a real hit. Since I was using light gear, I made sure that drag wasn't too tight and just maintained patience. 15-20 minutes later I could see this large Omilu (local name for this type of caranx) at the surface and was able to gaff it and bring it on board. Later I had it weighed at the local fish market just to make sure of the weight which was 20#.

The state record (using speargun, hook & line, whatever) is 25 1/2 # so I felt pretty good about this one...

David Itano FAD jig
Submitted by Kawika on Tue, 2006-12-05 08:04In the July 1999 issue of Hawaii Fishing News, Mike Sakamoto wrote an article about a jigging device used effectively by David Itano of the Hawaii Tuna Tagging Project at the FADS. The first figure shows the drawing in the article:

As described in the picture, David uses a 5-6' length of 20-40# monofilament attached to a swivel at one end of the wire. The main line is clipped or tied to the swivel on the other end of the wire. The lure on the 1/0 size Mustad 7766 or similar hook is either a strip of glitter minnow block or a plastic curly tail with silver glitter in clear background, firecracker (blue and red glitter in clear background) or transparent deep red. A gill net lead or molded lead of 3-5 oz. is fixed to the center of the rod.
I use a somewhat smaller version as shown below:

Note that my wire is bent somewhat. I feel that this allows the rig to settle properly with the leader and hook streaming out above it. I rarely get tangles with this approach.
A picture of the plastic curly tail on the hook is next:

This particular leader and lure hauled in a 40# yellowfin tuna, although it did take some time... ;)
I usually lower the jig to some amount below the school as seen on the depth recorder and retrieve it with large upward rod sweeps, retrieving line down to the water surface. If the fish are around, the rod simply stops after about the 2nd or 3rd sweep and the reel and I begin screaming. Party time...

Home made rod holder
Submitted by Kawika on Sun, 2006-12-03 04:16I like to make things for my fishing fun. And being a little older than many forum participants occasionally need things for fishing comfort. So I made a rod holder for both jigging with a spinning rod and reel and for bringing fish in. The first picture shows the basic setup.

We begin with a PVC T fitting that 1 3/8" o.d. pipe will fit into. Two ~4" lengths of pipe are glued into the opposite ends of the straight section of the T. Now we find a larger transition fitting. The smaller end of this fitting goes over the outside of the remaining section of the T fitting. The o.d. of the small end is ~ 1 7/8". The larger end of the transition fitting has an o.d. of ~2 1/8".

A short section of 1 7/8" o.d. PVC pipe now fits inside of the ~2 1/8" o.d. pipe. A 1/4" bolt goes through the base of the transition fitting to both hold the fitting on and act as a seat for the base of the rod.

I had some leftover foam insulation that I put on the outside of the straight section of the T to act as padding when the holder rests against my stomach. Inexpensive black nylon strapping and adjustable clips complete the whole business.

I made the whole thing out of scrap from previous projects. Not that hard being an inverate pack rat...(^-^) It's the general concept of the rod holder that I'd like to suggest. Of course the dimensions and materials are completely up to the builder.
