Want to learn how to tie assist cords for jigging?
Submitted by hlokk on Mon, 2012-07-16 10:31Hi guys. As a few of you already know, I have been doing up a few videos to help you guys learn a bit more about jigging. I have created a youtube channel, JiggingTips (www.youtube.com/JiggingTips) where you can access all the videos i've uploaded. I hope to add a few more videos covering a lot of different aspects to jigging and soft plastic fishing.
For now, I have some videos of how to tie assist cord, and a very quick rough video on fishing tips. If you subscribe to my channel, you'll get notified whenever I upload a new video. Coming soon will be another method for creating doubled cord assists (for deep drop jigging), a super clear video of all the knots you can use while jigging) and a few methods you can use to finish off your hooks). So dont forget to subscribe!
I will also be adding links to useful fishing videos I find on youtube (jigging, underwater strike cams, how to read your sounder, etc) so you can access these from my channel too (they'll be under favourites). If you find any good helpful videos, be sure to send the link to me, so I can put it on the channel and everyone can have easy access to it. I will also be creating a playlist for local WA jigging, so if you have any videos jigging out of WA, make sure to send them to me and i'll link them up too!
Remember, all my videos are available in HD, so it's best to open these links in youtube and click the little cog (and make the window size bigger).
Don't forget to like the videos or subscribe. Feel free to post comments if anything's not clear, or there are any aspects to jigging you want to know about (you can PM me on here, on youtube, or leave a comment on youtube)

Smith AMJ-52H vs Jigging Master 250gr (either Powerspell or Ocean god/devil)
Submitted by dkonig82 on Wed, 2012-07-04 08:56Bit of a random one, but looking at a new jig rod and thought I'd try for some feedback.
Chasing an overhead rod to fish PE5 on an Ocea Jigger 4000P.
Very keen on a Synit DS250 or Kaha 300, but the price tag is putting me off a bit right now.
I'll be hoisting jigs primarily in the 200-300gr range most the time, but might very occasionally put something a bit heavier or lighter on.
Main two cheaper rods I have been looking at are:
Smith AMJ-52H
Jigging Master Powerspell 250, Jigging Master Ocean Devil 50B/ML and Jigging Master Ocean God 280 (apparently all 3 of these the same blank - PS I know the Power spell is discontinued, but have access to a couple)
Anyone used both the Smith and one of those 3 JMs that can give me some pros/cons?
Cheers
Dan

Advice on new spin jigging rod & thoughts on new Catalinas.
Submitted by muntzy30 on Sat, 2012-06-23 08:01G'day all,
New to the forum (been reading heaps 2nd post) Looking at getting a new jigging rod, I want to match it with the new Daiwa Catalina 4500H about pe 2-5. I have a Venom Live Fibre OH pe 1-3 with a Trinidad 16n and love the rig but want to get a slightly heavier setup. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
I Live in Darwin but originally from Perth, went out with Craig from Saltwater late last year jigging for sambos and loved it, will be having another crack this year. Was a couple of Fishwrecked guys on board, can't remember their names.!! They were fishing with some serious rigs tiny little rods on Saltigas etc!!!!!
Have not done ahead of jigging up here but intend to give it a red hot go this dry for Jewies, Mackies and GT.

Tying assist hooks for smaller jigs
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Tue, 2012-06-12 14:09I have bought a few smaller jigs to try my luck at jigging the shallower inshore reefs - 20m or less. I tie my own assist hooks for larger jigs (90g and up), but I've never tied them for smaller jigs. New jigs range from 30g to 70g.
Looking for some recommendations:
1. Hook type and size? - I use SJ-41's and Kudako's on my larger jigs but the smallest size I can find is #1, seems a bit large for the smaller jigs
2. What weight assist cord should I use?
3. Single assist or double assist?
Thanks in advance!

Three Kings 2012
Submitted by Coxy on Sun, 2012-05-27 16:44After the long await that time of the year had come again when we head over the ditch to fish The Three Kings with Lance and Steve from Enchanter.
The emails, txts and calls were coming in 7 days out about how good the weather was looking, this is always a very bad thing if its looking good that far out it always turns for the worse.
We meet up with Lance and Steve and recd the bad news about the weather but lucky for us we have a 7 day booking rather than 5 so a couple of days stuck at the islands would not be the end of the world.
Loading up at Monganui.

Stevo the best deckie in the business pumped for another trip.

Getting sorted for the first drop.

Lance looking for some kings for us to unleash on at the King Bank

Second drop on the first day Buzz found himself hooked to a freight train, after a short batttle the first 30 + kegger was on board.

Andy come all the way from Perth to see if it was true that kings pulled harder than sambos, well well he soon found out that is was true, Andy with his first king for the trip.

I was next up to hook in to a freight train bringing the second over 30kg on the boat, the new Jigging Master Fallings Special jig worked a treat.

Mike testing out his new Jigging Master Fallings free jigger.

Mike with his new style for the camera

Actual he was just flipping him over for this shot of our double.

Mike and myself letting Andy no that the handle is not just on there for looks.

Andy with another cracker.

Now it was Mikes turn on the freight trains, his PB caught on the first day, this is the reason we fish the Three Kings.

Later that day I tied on my sample of the new Jigging Master Fallings 800 gram jigs to test and found myself hooked to another freight train and up come another cracker to finish the day of.

Day 2 and we were of nice and early to the Middlesex Bank before some bad weather come though.
After picking away at a couple of spots we hit up a new mark and it was all on for the next couple of hours before the tax man turned up.
Richo with a solid king.

Mike spent most of the afternoon bent over the rail and scored this 30 + kegger, one of five for the day between us.

Andy was in all sorts of trouble on the PE8 and Amberjack Sniper Hyper.

Andy with the result.

This photo says it all, by far the best shot from the trip, myself, Moody and Buzz doing battle to freight trains.

Mike with another 30 kegger.

Buzz with another 30 kegger.

While buzz's fish was coming over the rail I had hooked in to something solid on the bottom, fighting different to a king up come a cracking hapuka taken on the Jigging Master Fallings 800 gram jig.

Benno was in charge of filming and taking photos for the trip when I decided to let him have a break and have a go with the Jigging Master Fallings 800 gram jig. A first time jigger it was funny watching him try and swing this huge jig but after only a couple of drops he was soon in all sorts of trouble hanging over the rail fighting for his life, about 10mins later up popped another cracking puka which turned out to be his biggest every fish.

Andy with another.

Stefan with a solid king.

Andy with another next drop.

Mike wanted to have a crack with the 800 gram jig so down it went and it was jumped on straght away, the first bass for the trip.

Moody with a horse over the 30kg mark.

Richo was next up.

After a couple of hours of full on fishing 4 of us were all hooked up to solid kings but our old mate the tax man turned up at the wrong time, all fish were taken including the rest of mine which would have been a donkey around the 40kg mark.

Myself, Richo and Moody with 3 more.

The 800 gram jig went back on and I found myself hooked to another solid puka.

Shortly after Stefan found himself hooked to another solid puka.

The next day was a day around the islands with large seas and strong winds, we went around the corner for a look and there was no way we could have fished in those seas so we chased a few kings but nothing big and snapper.
Richo with one of many snapper.

Mike with the only top water king we could find.

Home for the night.

The next day the weather was still rough so we spent the morning at anchor, Mike went for a swim to find some paua for the boys, paua and puka for lunch.

After lunch we headed out to see how rough it was, most other crews would have been heading back in but we headed out for a arvo jig a day and a half around the islands was enough for us, and this little arvo session turned out to be the best of the trip, on the first drop all 7 of us were hooked up and most other drifts at least half of us were.
Richo with one of many.

Stefan with another solid king.

Myself with another over 30kg.

This drift 5 were landed check out the seas in the back ground, Moody was also hooked up to what turned out to be the king of the trip.

Andy with his another solid king.

Buzz from the same drift.

Moody's from the same drift which was the biggest for the trip.

Stefan with his first 30 kegger, the photo does not do this fish justice due to the big seas but we have some better video footage of it that will be out soon.

After a amazing arvo session we headed back to the islands looking forward to our last day chasing a few bass, puka and kings, no big bass were caught so not many photos taken we saved them for next year.
Myself hooked to a bass.

Richo with another king.

Another for Mike.

Later that arvo we began the big mission back to the cape where we anchored for the night in calm waters before the mission home the next morning.
A big thanks to Lance and Stevo for another awesome trip, and Benno for being our camera man for the week you picked some great weather to come  , bring on 2013 at the Three Kings aboard Enchanter !
Cheers Coxy

Please ,can someone help out the growing number of first time jiggers
Submitted by Dirt on Sun, 2012-05-27 08:06 I know this has been suggested before but it would be so helpfully and apreciated if somebody could post up some footage showing the different techniques for working metals for demersals. That post Kasey put up a while back showing how to tie your own assists was very helpful. I have all the right gear but don't seem to be having as much success as you hear others do, I know there are a lot of variables to this ,I'm still trying to learn how to use my sounder and understand what it is showing,so I know this can also contribute. I was thinking about going to one of those Tacklehq tutorial days to learn from some of the more experienced fishes. Catching demersals on metals is addictive when you experience some success. Went out yesterday ,the misses was pulling up fish on bait on a regular basis and I barley had a touch
any advice on the any of the above topics would be muchly apreciated.

Do you like your Xzoga Taka-Si 6012
Submitted by Demersal Jigger on Wed, 2012-05-23 16:04Well i have only used my Xzoga once and find that you really have to tighten the reel seat locking nut to fit the reel firmly to the rod. Once i started jigging i found that my fingers seemed to loosen the nut so i decided to put a bit of electrical tape on there to stop it moving. When i got hooked up to a half decent fish i swear it felt like the reel moved around a tiny bit even though its locked onto the rod quite firmly. Maybe all parabolic jig rods are like that and i'm just used to using graphite soft plastic type rods which dont bend all the way through the rod.
Does anyone else find there fingers sit on the locking nut and loosen it ???
Is there anything better than electrical tape to stop the nut comming loose ???
Apart from these minor issues the rod is good, i'm almost tempted to grab a Taka-Si 6013 and Caldia 4000 to jig 110-150g jigs.

Jigging for Demersals
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2012-05-22 13:38Have noticed quite a lot of reports and photos lately of people getting into the demersals on jigs.
One question i had is are people having more success with jigs that have a plastic squid, or feathers attached to the assist hook, compared to a simple metal jig like a butterfly jig with just a standard assist hook, no fancy decoration around the hook itself?
Just curious, pretty new to jigging for demersals and have quite a range of jigs, but few (besides pirates) with dressed up assist hooks.

Hookups on skirt assists
Submitted by Brad Y on Wed, 2012-04-11 10:46Got hold of a few inchiku style jigs recently and over the weekend I hooked a few fish on them. However Im having trouble keeping the fish on. The hooks are very very sharp so there is no problem there, but when Im fighting the fish it always seems I get them off the bottom a few meters and then they spit the hooks. I have the same trouble with pirate and octo style jigs quite often, but dont have any issue with metals and single or double assist hooks on them.
Is there a better technique for hooking and keeping fish on the hooks with these suckers?

New Xzoga
Submitted by Brad Y on Wed, 2012-04-04 11:14Just had my new jig stick land yesterday. Its one not too many people (if any) over here would have seen before.
Alot of people are probably familiar with the Xzoga Taka-Si range, in particular the 6012 and 6013 it seems. This rod is still in the same range but is a 6312. I havent felt the 6012 for action but from all I can see the difference is this rod has an extra 3 inches on it and slightly different handle set up. I believe it is designed for "Inchiku" which looks to be pretty much slow jigging with a metal rigged with a pirate style octo skirt and assist hooks. It says max drag 5kg and jig weight to 150gr. It has a full set of Fuji Sic guides.
Now I havent been jigging for demersals much and to be honest this stick is going to be interesting when a 10kg dhuie wants to powerdive home. But I havent loaded it up to feel what it pulls like on a fish yet- hopefully that will happen friday or monday. From what I can gather, people have landed some very good fish on thier PE2 rods so time will soon tell. Ive got it matched to a stradic 4000 with 20lb sunline PE at the moment.
Will take a couple of pics and put them up soon, in the mean time here is a link to the rod in action (I chose a red one not yellow coz red ones go faster
).
