Guides for a Calstar 600L
Submitted by bradz on Sun, 2010-11-14 22:01Hi guys
Looking for some advice from anyone who has a Calstar 600L or similar for an overhead. I will be using this rod as my go-to gear for most light jigging and bottom fishing with 30lb braid.
What style of Fuji guides and tip would you recommend? Also, in regards to binding the guides, is double overbinding sufficient?
Looking forward to any assistance.
Cheers
Brad

sambo season
Submitted by turts on Wed, 2010-11-03 19:06gday all
we are coming from interstate (SA) for the samson season first weekend of december (4th).
Had a ball last year and couldnt help but come back. We were there a bit later however last year (27th Dec) and although we got onto plenty of fish the sharks were also out in force. So this year we decided to come a bit earlier.
Just curious when the season actually gets into full swing? i have been told mid november but things still seem a little slow at the moment according to the reports. Hopefully we still get onto some decent schools it would be a shame to come all that way to find they arent out in force yet?!
We are finding over here in SA water temps are down due to the late winter we have been getting and the summer season is off to a slow start for the normal species you would expect to find.....

300m pe4 vs 250 pe5
Submitted by Luke_B on Sun, 2010-10-31 13:37afternoon fellas.
got myself a saltiga 4500 and was thinking of spooling it up with either 300m of 40lb braid or 250m of 50lb..not sure on what to do.
im planning on taking it out on a few charters chasing sambos so i dont want to spend a lot of money on varivas or anything like that as it might get tangled and i could loose a lot of line. so question is, should i go for more line capacity/less strength or go for slightly less line capacity/more strength? i have no clue on how long these big sambos run as ive never done it before so some help will be great.
cheers.

Fishing for King George whiting off mandurah
Submitted by dragrush on Fri, 2010-10-29 01:06Hi--------looking for some suggestions regarding catching KG offshore at mandurah----I have seen one big one caught by a friend but it was a fluke catch and not targetted. I go out to about 20 metres near the James Service reef area and have seen some great reef formation around there . Was wondering where the KG are likely to hang out . The bottom seems to be either sand with lots of small fathead and whiting or butterfish or else jagged reef with "millions" of wrasse ------not much else in between . Anyone got any ideas or can give their own experiences of this area .
cheers

PE2 light jig rod
Submitted by JohnF on Fri, 2010-10-22 09:52Looking for a very light MAX PE2 jig rod to go with my Tierra 4000 (to be upgraded in futire to say 5000 Stella or Twinpower). Opinions welcolme.
Requirements:
- 20 lb PE2
- 50-80 grame jigs for demersals
- budget $200 - $300
- must have long butt
Already have Jigforce PE1.5 to 3, sweet for 100-150 grame jigs and PE3, but too stiff for jigs lighter than 80 grams, lookig for something lighter and more responsive.

Best PE3 Overhead Jigger
Submitted by JohnF on Fri, 2010-10-22 09:48OK guys, looking for opinions and recommendations for a PE3 overhead jigger to go on my Jigforce PE1.5-3. Looking to jig 801-200 gram jigs (I know the rod is rates to 120, but I have jigged 200 on it no drams), and want it reasonably light so I can jig all day.
I have a Calcutta on it at the moment, OK for demersals, very light and comfortable, but too slow at 60 cm retrieve per turn for pelagics. Was thinking around 95 cm per turn would be spot on. I have a Stella 10,000 for the heavy and fast stuff, so this is the intermediate set-up.
Price range - $300 - $600.

Sambo jigging catch care - please read
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Thu, 2010-10-14 12:16
This probably should go up on the forums at the start of every jigging season to remind / inform anglers of the best way to look after their jigged up sambos. This is a resource we want to protect so the more people doing their bit the better.
The document has had input from a wide range of people and provides some great information about the best way to look after jigged up sambos to increase their chance of survival when they go back into the water.
I'd encourage anyone heading out to flick through it and familiarise / re-familiarise themselves with its content.
You can find the Catching and Caring for Samson Fish document by clicking --> here <-- (630kb PDF).

sambo jigging
Submitted by tomas23 on Tue, 2010-10-12 21:25Hey guys , so i want to get into sambo jigging as iv been learking this forum for a while and doing my research. Iv gone out and got my self a suitable outfit and a few knife jigs to get me started, and a few other little bits a peaces. iv done alot of soft plastic fishing so i just wonna change it up a little bit and also the fact that a mate bought a new boat. Now that im pretty much prepared were struggling to find some good spots along/ near rotto?. i know a few guys here arnt gonnna want to give up there spots so we were thinking of going to horseshoe reef and try for a jig there while drifting over or near the reef , and also swirl reef but if that doesnt work out then maybe just look around for some lumps west of rotto? if anyone can tell us what to look for on the sounder or how much depth of water or even if someone would even be kind enough to give us some gps co ords then it would be much appreciated.
cheers guys ;)

A few Lemax rods suitable for the coming sambo season
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Tue, 2010-10-05 21:57With the sambo season kicking off in a month or two I thought it would be an appropriate time to put a post up on the range of Lemax rods jig rods available that would be suitable for the season. If you click on the title of the relevant rod you'll be taken through to the rod's webpage on the Lemax website where you can find all the specs, a few more images of the rods etc.
Lemax SlimMax SW
The SlimMax is the top of the wazza for the Lemax line of rods and despite that the RRP for the heavier end rods are only around $500. They come with Fuji Alconite guides, Fuji DPS / TCS reels seats depending on whether it's the spin or overhead rod and Fuji gimbles. The rods are lightweight and very comfortable to fish with. I started using the SlimMax last jigging season and took it up to the Monties last month as well and am constantly surprised how much power it dishes out. Depending on whether you want to go lighter or heavier the most appropriate rods for the jigging season would be:
Spin / Overhead - 5'3" one-piece, PE8-10, max jig weight 600g.
Spin / Overhead - 6'3" two-piece, PE6-8, max jig weight 450g.
Lemax Stormfire
The Stormfire is a great looking, quality rod which is very well priced. Just this year Lemax have brought it out in a PE5-8 model which going by the specs looks like it should be a rod fit for the job. Unfortunately they're not due in till the end of this month so I can't provide hands on info so consider this a heads up and I'll update the post when they're in. I've been told the RRP will be around the $230 mark which is a seriously good price (I reckon anyway
).
The Stormfires use Lemax' own custom silicon carbide guides and the rods have Fuji reel seats. Only the spin model comes in the PE5-8.
Spin - 5'3" one-piece, PE5-8, max jig weight 380g.
Lemax Sea Ranger
The Sea Ranger is a solid glass rod which has only recently come out. It offers a good entry-level jig rod that is available in both spin and overhead models. The rods have Lemax's custom silicon carbide guides, heavy duty graphite gimble and graphite reel seat and a good length butt for that extra leverage. RRP for these rods is around $230.
Spin / Overhead - 6'3" two-piece PE5-8, max jig weight 500g.
Lemax JigKing
The JigKing is another great looking entry-level jig rod. The JigKing is also a solid glass rod so while it's a bit heavier than a graphite rod it offers more durability making it a great option for people only just getting into jigging. The rods have got Lemax SiC guides, graphite reel seat and stainless steel gimbles and are cosmetically appealing with their coloured joints and gimbles. RRP for the heavier models starts at $170.
Spin / Overhead - 6'3" two-piece, PE6-8, max jig weight 300g.
Overhead - 5'8" one-piece, PE6-8, max jig weight 350g.
Spin / Overhead - 5'5" one-piece, PE10+, max jig weight 500g.
Spin - 5'6" one-piece, PE10+, max jig weight 400g.
Lemax Firebull
The Firebull isn't in yet but I'm looking forward to checking them out because they're a sweet looking rod. They have a graphite red blank and matching red aluminium gimble, Fuji reel seats and Lemax SiC guides, they've also got the longer butt. I can tell you that the heaviest the rods come is PE5-6 and will retail for around $270. I don’t have any info on lengths, max jig weights etc at the moment. These should be in stores by the end of the month.
If you've got any questions on the rods flick me a PM, happy to answer any questions, clarify any info etc or of course you can always go in and heckle the Lemax stockist, the list of them is available --> here <--.
Cheers

Jigging Question
Submitted by Matty05 on Wed, 2010-09-22 18:40Had an awesome day out today jigging for sambos. Arms and shoulders well and truly stretched. I did notice there was a bit of line twist while using a Zest Hardy Long jig that fluttered a bit on the drop.
Question is does anybody use a snap swivel to take out the line twist?
Cheers

knot strengths and drag pressures
Submitted by grayzeee on Sun, 2010-09-19 16:47just had an eye opener
testing my braid to leader to jig breaking strain. i'm running 30lb braid and consistently i'm getting around 29lbs before failiure.
just ran the line through the rod to see how much pressure i was exerting on a biggie that bust me off the other weekend.
jig force hearty rise 1.5 to 3 and a stradic 4000.
i thought i was putting out a bit more drag pressure, with the cap screwed down tight , i was lucky to see 5kg.
(pressure was slowly applied)
and fighting the big bugger , i was prob only using 3 kg's though it was still smoking the drag.
(i suppose at least i know i can lock up the drag and give it some)

PR vs FG vs Till - the first couple of tries and testing
Submitted by till on Thu, 2010-09-16 11:24So, just tried the PR knot. The first one tied is shown. It was tied with the line wrapped around my foot for tension, the braid is a length I "caught" out at the fads one day, poundage unknown.
I wrapped the braid around a tree out the front of my place a bunch of times, then tied a bucket to the mono and started filling it up with scuba weights ~3lb.
The first one, the braid snapped ahead of the knot - probably just shitty braid. It took 14x 3lb weights, and my bathroom scale rated that at 20kg.
The second one pinged at 12 weights, or about 16kg. This one unravelled as it came apart somehow, you can see the ends in the image.
I think I might need more practise for this before its a goer, as well as probably starting to tie it in some less shitty braid. Interestingly in this Sport Fishing Knot Challenge, they tie the FG knot, but it has no ball on the mono, so how important is it?
Ok so I tried a few more PR knots, they broke at 50, 46 and then the braid mainline just failed repeatedly so I couldn't test it over 44lb.
Next, seeing as a few people went in to bat for the FG, I gave it a try and the results were pretty interesting. No knot failures, just mainline braid failures, at 42 and 51lb. I'm clearly going to have to give it a crack with some decent braid, and probably a better test station too.

Okuma Salina II
Submitted by MattMiller on Tue, 2010-09-07 11:13Hi guys, i know these reels have been out for a while now and others have asked this before. So i was just wondering what you think of them?
They come in varying sizes up to 16000 which says it has a drag capable of 30kg (which i thinks unlikely). So there obviously aimed at the jigging/ Popping market.
Considering you can get your hands on them for @$200 i'm interested in what there like.

suggest a reel
Submitted by Luke_B on Tue, 2010-08-17 21:37Hi Fellas.
Im looking to get a medium sized jigging reel for the upcoming sambo season, just need opinions on what to get.
first of im willing to spend good money on it, I do have a Daiwa expedition but I want to go with something smaller and lighter, looking for a 4500 daiwa/ 8000 Shimano. I will be using varvivas big one pe3 (48lb) and the rod is a Daiwa Catalina 5'9 spin pe4.
I have catalina 4500 already but it is the high speed model which i use for Landbased spinning, was looking to get the low speed one but they dont really appeal to me. Ive been looking at a saragosa 8000, stella 8000 swpg and at the Daiwa s-extreme 4500. so far the daiwa gets my vote as im more of a daiwa fan, but id like to hear some suggestions.
cheers.

Alutechnos Jiggers: 12C and new 8V
Submitted by till on Sun, 2010-08-15 19:22The Alutechnos Gorilla 12C reels have been getting quite a good following overseas, its quite narrow, very palmable and has a capacity of 380m of 20lb mono, 4.4 gear ratio, 670g.
Now they have a smaller one coming out called the 8V with a quoted capacity of 300m of 50lb Braid, 580g and 22lb of drag with freespool.
Edit: just put up another image, so you can see how narrow the 12C is. Its supposed to be about the same size as an Accurate 600NN (300yds of 65lb braid), or the older Accurate 665NN (450yds of 50lb). Anyone want to send me one for sambo season?
