Questions about Jigging, Jigging Reports and Discussion

New to Jigging, got few Questions

Hi Everyone. I figure im gonna struggle finding the right info just cruising the forums, so here i am with a few questions, alot of you locals sound very knowledgeable of something i am very new to. hope to learn much.

Firstly i am over the otherside @ Cairns, tropical NQ. I fish every other day, whether chasing sooties top water, jacks in the creeks barra on the headlands, fingermark and nannygai at the inshore wrecks, reds offshore, and just now am i starting to chuck poppers for GT, and jig metals and softies for whatever wants to play.

i have got doubles of the twinpower fbs. they are nice, but... yeah. i have a torsa 16 and a saltist 40. i have jigged a little with them, on jigwrex pe4  and monstermesh pe6-8. uncomfortable.

OK Now.. i just purchased stella 5000sw, pe 3 ygk ultra 20kg, i want to put it on a jm powerspell 150.        Any thoughts on this... is this braid to heavy for the reel, maybe 30lb is better, should i use a jm 100, or something entirely different?

Also.. im looking at either the stella 8000pg or the 10000. i have 300m saltiga sensor pe5 75lb for it. What is considered more ideal for  jigging perhaps on a jm 300/350, the cranking power or the speed? ithe lower geared 8000 retrieves almost a metre a turn, so its not exactly slow is it. i will fish around 80m, i would like to use this reel for surface lures as well, for GTs around 20kg... so before i make a mistake, not that buying a stella is a mistake, i think i just need a bit of info based on experience so i can make the right choice.. you know what i mean.

and again the same delemma @ the fat end of the stellas the 18000 and the 20000, jigging 100m+ and popping for 40kg+ GT. is it possible from the same reel? anyone doing this? does it hurt? or how have others got around the problem?

Righto i guess thats a start. thanks for ya time, hope to get a reply or two, and i hope to make a contribution here into the future. jigging isnt huge over here, already there are a few dedicated jiggers and i want to get on that boat hope to meet you all soon.

When does the samson jigging season finish?

hey guys

when does the samson jigging season finish.  im still waiting for my new jigging rod to come from america (about 4 - 5 days away) and i was hoping to hit the water within the month if it was still good.

thanks

Smith amj 52ex? or not

hey guys,

i know this has kinda been covered before, but i am out at the moment looking to get a new jig rod.

i am currently looking at the Smith AMJ 52EX, but when i went to have a look at them there wasnt any in stock.  i didnt want to go ahead and order it in without being confident that this is the one i want as i dont have a chance to load it up and see how it feels. and i dont wana make the tackle shop go out of their way to order it then i just say no thanks.

from my own research, reading through forums, i have seen one where the guy took it out first time on a charter and it snapped (he claims it was used properly)

From your experience, have you ever tried this rod and what are/were your thoughts on it or is there some other rods for this sort of weight that you reccomend

Im looking for a rod to go with the stella 20000 with PE6 line, so basically something i can use for the bigger sambos and for when i go up north.

thanks

Cheap vs Dearer Jigs

Has anyone noticed differences in the quality/action of cheap jigs compared to the dearer ones out there.

I realise that terminal tackle on the cheap ones needs to be changed. So i'm asking more about the action and durability.

Also taken into account the chance of bustoffs with tangles etc on charters where i do all my jigging for sambos.

Metro Jigging day/s

G'day all,

I've got a mate coming over from Sydney this week & we're hoping to get out on some mid-week charters, next week (11th-14th). I'm posting this topic just to see if any fellow FW members want to join us. No bookings have been made yet. It's all subject to the W word (Weather) & numbers of course.

Any takers, please let me know.

Daz

How much drag do you use?

To all the sambo jiggers out there, how much drag do you set your reel to when jigging for sambos?  Do you actually measure your drag settings or go by feel alone?

Sambo Jigging Saturday 2nd January.

If anyone is keen on going for a jig this Saturday with Shikari let me know.

Cheers,

bali fishing charters

Hey guys

Was just wondering if anyone had been on any good charters in Bali? Looking to do mainly jigging and popping. Any help would be apprerciated.

Banax Kingpins busted on day one!!

Ok so we bought 2 kingpins as soon as they came out as they seemed to be a good reel for your dollar but we were wrong! Now we took them out for the first time jigging for sambos, had several hookups on each and were initially wrapped with the performance. The drag was super smooth, they felt good to use and they landed some big fish, however they obviously have a design fault. As you can see in the picture the reel stem snapped clean off from the main body of the reel!! On reel one this happened after 5 fish and on reel two after only 4 fish. One reel you could put down to a monday build but two reels is more than a coincidence especially at the exact same spot! Obviously a weak spot in the reel and i hope that banax recall these reels and fix the problem. Overall the reels were good and if it wasn't for this problem i would be happy to keep on using it. So if you are thinking of getting one i would reconsider, at least until they change the design. More photos are available if you are interested. Now to find that extra $1000 for a Saltiga!

Shout Lightens

Read somewhere that Shout Lightens are reasonably good when targeting demersals on jig so want to get my hands on some to try out.  Are there any stores in the West that carry them?  Alternatively, are there on-line stores that carry a reasonable range? Thanks

Ryobi safari 5000 metalroyal

Has anybody had any luck with these reels? Went out to buy a saltiga spin but looked at the ryobi and it felt realy good so thought i would save some coin and give it a go. The first reel didn't even catch a fish on its first outing the anti-reverse went straight away first drop! Got given a new reel from the rep all good i thought every product has a lemon. Dropped a jig straight down a sambos throat the other day with the new reel didn't even need to jig and as the weight came on the anti-reverse shit its self yet again. Super smooth drag though.

Special thanks to Oceanside: Faulty Lemax

I'd just like to post a thanks to Ryan and Honsu from Oceanside for their help with my faulty Lemax fishing rod. Whilst out jigging last week, my Lemax Slim Max PE8-10 splintered on me and it was only 2nd time i had used it.It hadn't been dropped, high sticked, damaged or anything out of the norm, it was just a dodgy blank which I understand happens every now and then. The boys at Oceanside had no issues in taking the faulty product back to Lemax and immidiately provided me with a store credit in which I upgraded to a Jigging Master Powerspell. Thanks boys for the great store and the great service!
Cheers Mark

Wrenching Fish From The Sea........

Have any of you guys ever experimented with using odd things to catch fish with while jigging other than using jigs?.

I caught this snapper the other day on the adjustable snapper......

Have caught several kingies to around 15-18kg on large ring spanners too. A few other guys here in NZ have used cut down towel rails, steel reinforcing rods for concrete, straightened out horse shoes and yep they catch fish too.

Anyone else used anything else out of the ordinary?

I bet Sambo's would love a juicy 24mm ring spanner! Wink

Smith jigging rod, which one to choose ???

So Im looking at buying a jigging rod to match up to a saltiga exp 6500 running 80Lb braid. Decided on another smith rod but unsure which one to get, this is the two ive kinda narrowed it down to, wondering peoples thoughts on which way to go... KInda leaning towards the frist one even though it is slightly more expensive....

The AMJ-S52EX is a light, potent jig stick made for larger spinning reels.

The AMJ "Armour Graphite for Jig" series is characterised by their light weight, fine diameter though durable blanks.

This model suits anglers wishing to have a grunty jig stick though do not want to go to the heavier PE8+ rods.

Targets include all tropical coral dwellers, cobia, amberjacks, yellowtail kingfish and medium sized dogtooth on PE 4-8 braid.

WGJ-S56H

The WGJ series of jig rods are constucted using the latest generation (WG21) of glass which is 60% lighter as well as being stronger than conventional glass rods. The S56LH is a single piece rod with Fuji Sic guides and a medium fast action. It is suited to lines from from 3-6PE (30-90lb braid) and has a max load rating of 14kg.

Thanks for the jigging tips...

Hi guys, just wanted to say thanks to those who pointed me in the right direction out the back of Rotto. This is my first Sambo... a successful catch and release. A great day all round!

Jigging Jan 4th or 5th anyone?

Just wondering if anyone is organising a charter on Jan 4th or 5th and has room for 2 more to make up numbers! Never been before but keen to go try out some new christmas pressies on some solid fish. If no fishwrecked members are organising a trip I'll have to ring around to see if theres any spots on the charters. Would be great to get out and meet a few members tho who know jigging and soak in some tips and techniques! My bro in law will prob come too and hasn't been before either.

Cheeers,

 Ben.

bluejuice jigging

A few mates of mine and I went out on a jigging charter with Bluejuice today and I think they put on a good show. We caught approx 60-70 sambos which were released with either a release weight or with a spear, if any fish came back up and floated the skipper took the effort to go around pick them up and use a release weight. There were only low numbers on the boat with a couple of those falling to the dreaded sea sicknes, you have to feel for them as there is nothing worse. The weather was great could not have asked for a better day on the water. We only lost one fish to sharks which was to about a 3.5m mako. All in all it was a great day on the water with a couple of rods being snapped and a couple of reels destroyed but it was a hell of a day and well worth it.

Golden Mean Earthshaker ASC-52 8-10

Been looking at my rod options for my PE4 overhead jigging outfit...

Came across this earthshaker and it looks the goods

http://www.golden-mean.co.jp/item/salt-water/earthshaker/

...but was wondering if anyone has used or owned the earthshakers or golden mean's in general and could give me any feedback?

Also if anyone knows an international stockist that woud be great!

Cheers

New jigging reel that may be available, sometime?

Apparently its a copy of an earlier reel by marfix, and perhaps ryobi did one as well. I don't really know anything about it apart from that.

Jigging for demersals

Probably been discussed before but fishing Perth waters for dhuies and pinks what jigs would you recommend.  Knife jig style not SP or slow jig (Octa / Lucanus etc).

Jigging Saturday- who's going?

Well work's over and I've finally made it home. I'm very keen to get out for a jig and Saturday is looking like the day. Does anyone have a charter booked or going in their boats and looking for a extra split in the fuel?
Cheers
Tim

Youngest kid you've seen / taken jigging?

If Saturday's weather continues as it looks right now (on Seabreeze) I'm thinking about taking a couple of young kids from my church out to do some jigging. I'm a bit unsure though because I reckon some of the fish would weigh more than what a couple of these kids do.

I think if I set the drags right and stay close by them in case it all gets a bit too much for them... maybe offer to do some of the more active jigging and hand it over once a hookup takes place it should be sweet but I'm not 100% sure. Just wanted to see if any crew here have taken their youngsters out - say in the 10-15 age bracket - and how they faired?

jigging today

my grandad and i went out jigging today behind rotto and the sambos were firing when we first got there at around 8, with the first three drops resulting in two lost jigs and one fish landed. the sizes were pretty good with the biggest just over 30kg and the smallest just over 20kg. the weather was awsome with a glass off around 11 and we had a light sotherly pushingus us home at around one.

hears a few pics

gemini wreck today

Hey everyone, headed out to the gemini this morning was easy to get to didnt seem far out at all from mindarie marina. Could see land quite clear, tried looking for it on the sounder and couldnt really tell if i was on it. I threw my jigs over few times each drift, gave it about 4 drifts but nothing:( Was hoping for some sambos but im new to the jigging thing and havent seen it done before so just following the technique from videos on the net. Not sure my coords are right for the gem but mine are:

s 31,37,120

e 115,33,630

If anyone knows if this is right or not please let me know. Does anyone know if there is a school that inhabit the gem all the time or its just a hit mn miss thing they might be there or not??

Cheers

New toys arrived today!

The tackleshop I'd ordered a few bits and pieces from finally got their shipment of Hots rods in on Friday and my order was dispatched on Saturday the 5th Nov, arriving at my doorstep 9 o'clock this morning! Not bad for O/S to Perth.

Couldn't wait to check out the new rod I'd ordered, having never seen -or used- one before. Everything was well packaged, I haven't spotted any damage on anything yet. *phew*

Hots One Pitch Slider SOS-56XH

'Apparently' this rod is similar to the Hots Wei World 52XH, but less prone to snapping if high sticked (i.e. a more forgiving blank). It is 5.6 feet in length, rated for PE6-10 max jig weight 420gm. One of the first things I noticed about this rod was the length of the handle, I was a expecting a long-ish handle but it still a bit longer than I had expected from my impression in photos. I measured roughly 78 cm from butt to the end of the fore-grip.

The rod is fairly plane and simple, no fancy bindings or weaves here! Grey fibre weave and black binding for the guides with some silver highlights. Nothing special. I'm not sure what guides are on the rod, and I can't even see what components it uses on www.hots.co.jp.

Rod feels very light, weighs 'nothing' compared to the 20000SW stella. The stella btw was bought locally, prices were surprisingly competitive compared with overseas, was happy to spend a bit more and get it locally. Now all it needs is a 'ultra light carbon knob'.

Spooled the reel up with PE8 jigman, used one of the line stickers that came with the stella to lock the braid down and prevent slippage. Was a real bitch getting the backing off the sticker though! in the end the silver side of the sticker ended sticking down against the spool -not sure if this was right!

Also bought a line spool holder so that I wouldn't have to bother the wife. It seems to do the job well, you can adjust the tension via the red knob. Worked best with the rod tip pointed at the device so that the line came off straight down the guide onto the reel -very happy with the purchase. The handle on the side allows you to wind/strip line off the reel back onto a spool if required.

The line came in 100m joined spools, I ordered 7, thinking I'd fit 350m on, but in reality 300m would have been enough, I got 330m on but would have been happy with 300.

Now all I need to do is find some time off work and go fishing! (Easier said than done).

Cheers,

Eric

Torsa 16 vs Ocea Jigger 4000P/5000P vs other options

Well seeing as I haven't treated myself to a new pressy for a while I thought I'd get myself a new heavy jigging and bottom bouncing reel (PE8). The catch is it also needs to be used as a trolling reel every now and then (mackies, YFT, wahoo etc). The jigging/bottom bouncing will mainly be sambos/kings down south and up for doggies and other big jig targets up north.
I like the lever drag on the Torsa 16 for the trolling side of things, but have only jigged with one a few years ago on Shikari and can't remember what it was like (ie too fast or too heavy).
Who here has jigged with both the Torsa and the Ocea Jiggers and how did they compare?
Does anyone have any other reel suggestions that would suit?
Cheers

Sambo Jigging 4/12

FW member Chrisp organised a few of us to go out on sw charters today. Was a great day out and enjoyed by all onboard. Took a few picutres but not alot so if anyone else wants to add to this thread feel free.

Shared the boat with a group of guys over from Sydney, they took the prize for biggest fish caught with a horse of a Sambo, hopefully someone else can add pics as i didnt get any....

Got to meet a few of the fishwrecked members, once again a bunch of great guys and got to test out some new gear.....also got to test out a popping GT rod as a makeshift sambo jigging rod...was hard work but fun for 2 drops but wont be doing it again :P

Heres a few pics from the day...

First catch for the day....hard work using Saltiga 6500 exp and Saltiga Murimura popping rod :P

Second catch, christening my Saltiga 4500 and Smith AMJ, caught on 45 Lb braid :D

My biggest for the day...

FW members cleaning up.....

A well fought catch lost in the final stages to an estimated 4 - 5 metre great white.......sorry about the pics but it didnt hang around long or surface to get good shots...

And what the noahs ark left behind....

I dont usually bother putting too many photos up as its a pain in the arse on this sight to get the sizing right etc so my apologies of this doesnt work right, if anyone wants to add to it your more than welcome ;P

Cheers, Kane

Rottnest sea containers?

Hi All

I have just arrived in Perth after living in NW for several years and was hoping to give jigging a go at the back of Rottnest. A friend was telling me about these sea containers that are suppose to be out there? Is anybody willing to tell me the co-ord's for these, if they are real? I understand if knowbody wants to tell me. I only intend to release the fish, that's if I manage to catch one! Cheers...
