Xzoga Rods!!
Submitted by seasonsrods on Tue, 2008-09-16 11:08Hi all, I'm David of SeasonsRods the Australian Distributor of Xzoga. Some of you might have heard of Xzoga but I think most of you have not so let me make a short introduction to some of the Xzoga products.
Xzoga's specialty is in thier Jigging and Popping rods, though they do have extremely good spinning and surf rods I think thier Jigging rods are what will be of interest to most of you, especially for the WA Samsons. Thier blanks are designed with what Xzoga refer to as PTF Action (Power Transmission Fighting Action) with thier 4 point action design. What thier design does is to combine a blank with the correct action to work those jigs with you putting in the minimum amount of effort possible while still has the right action that loads up perfectly for when you are fighting the Monster!.
We have a complete range of rods and blanks from PE1 to PE10 for jigging to suit your needs. I will make an introduction of our products with photo's and some additional details as we go but please feel free to visit our website for more information, www.seasonsrods.com.au or www.xzoga.com. Or if you have and quries please feel free to contact me any time either by message in fishwrecked, email: sales@seasonsrods.com.au or hp: 0433832338.
Just some photo's of GT's caught a few months back on one of Team Xzoga's trip to test their popping rods against the GT's off an oil rig.
The last photo on the right shows the GT caught on the custom PE3 Xzoga 7ft 6in popping rod. The rod might just be a PE3 but the butt of the rod still packs a punchs for you to drag the fish away from the structure. In this case the structure was an oil rig.
Some were also caught on jigs. The popping rods are built on Xzoga's Taka G blanks which are 99% graphite.
Xzoga has two different series of blanks that they build thier rods on. One is the TAKA-G and the other is the TAKA-U. Appart from a slight difference in appearence and action the TAKA-G is 99% Graphite while the TAKA-U is 80% graphite + E-Glass construction.

Molding yr own Jigs
Submitted by waterman on Wed, 2008-08-06 14:19I'm set up to mold my own sinkers, but were thinking of giving some butterfly jigs a go. Thinking of using some of the DO-IT Mold blanks & getting a machining/die shop to machine the molds based on some good metal jig patterns, particularly some I used in the 80's that are out of production now & some of my own designs.
Trying to work out whether the Jigs are poured from straight lead or an alloy. Any help appreciated.

Winter fishing in Albany
Submitted by Kawika on Tue, 2008-07-29 13:35Well, it's been a little while since I visited and I apologize for not keeping in touch.
Been trying to do a little more jigging around the 50 fathom dropoffs near home and with some success - a 17 kg GT (small by this group's standards) answered my calls and was promptly devoured by my and my wife's family.

On a different note, it looks as though I'll be visiting Albany near the end of February next year. I'll be there for about a week and will be involved with the Playmakers festival, giving talks about ukulele making.
I'm sure to make time to visit some fishing supply stores and try to do a little fishing on the side. Is this time of year good for jigging? Can anyone recommend a party boat for doing a little jigging?

Razor Gang
Submitted by seansurfy on Mon, 2008-06-30 06:32In the past I've used a combination leader(30cm of wire double crimped on the end of the mono/flouro wind on leader) when jigging in the tropics. Has anyone used a different system that works well? Is the wire necessary? Is the risk of being bitten off out weighed by more strikes? I mainly jig with 80-100lb braid and 150-200lb leader and heavy drag.....Any comments...

Octopussy jigging for Demersals
Submitted by saltatrix on Sun, 2008-06-29 00:19There appears to be a rapid explosion in the range of sinker based jigs with rubber strips skirts being released by different companies.
Daiwa Bay Rubber
River 2 Sea Octa Sniper
Shimano Lucanus Jigs
Have I missed some?
Has anyone had any success inshore Metro with these jigs? Any photos?
Problem with up north is you could cuts strips off your underpants as a jigging lure with success in warmer water.

Taikabua Jigs
Submitted by Stevef on Thu, 2008-06-26 10:45Has anybody had a go with the "new" Taikabura style jigs with the round head and the rubber spinner bait style bodies. Media reports appear to be good however this could also be blokes in the takcle industry talking up a new product
Interested in how they should be fished, what depth of water they are effective in and of course any results with using the jigs.
I bought a couple the other day and am now just waiting on some favourable weather to give them a shot

Jigging up north
Submitted by hlokk on Wed, 2008-06-11 15:23Hi guys,
Now that I have a jigging rod, I thought I would get some jigs to cover all my bases (minnows, skirts, poppers, stickbaits, casting metals, soft plastics, slow jigs (firetails, taikabura), fast jigs ).
Hoping to drop some jigs down into some schools when we run over them. Picked up 3 smith jigs, 1 raider. Got some 60-70g metals I can assist hook as well. Got a couple of assist hooks (need more), owner solid and split rings and BB's. All 150lb (split rings may be 120?). 50lb braid being used.
I figure there will be quite a few macks up there, and a chance of them swiping your jig even if you're targeting something else. I dont particularily want to loose too many jigs. Going to rig them as Mav/Honsu/etc do (BB->split ring->lure/assist hook off split ring). I figure a wire assist would be best?(due to mackerels). I'm thinking of using some 100lb, supple 7 strand, crimped and heatshrinked. Honsus option was to daisy chain split rings, but that can be quite expensive as you'd need a few packs of hyperwire :p.
Lures are 140, 160, 185, 185mm long, in the 150-200g range. So thinking the bottom of the hook should be approx 60mm down which makes it 1/3rd to 1/2 of all.(will be split ringing jigs on to swap). Should that be the point of the hook though?
So, short questions:
1. Wire on assist? How?
2. Length to hook point?
3. Short length leader wire, or heavy mono? Bite twist leader onto mono? (Have 100lb momoi atm btw)
4. Wind on leader(4-5m 150lb?) or just 1-2m of the heavy mono leader?
5. BB on leader, or assist hook as well/only?
A lot more info out there if you want to jig for sambos, but I dont know much much mackeral jigging people do (either targetted or incidental catch :p)

fishing photos
Submitted by Three Lions on Tue, 2008-06-10 12:43A quick reminder when taking photos on a boat. Try turning the flash on. There have been some great photos posted lately, and with the aid of a flash turned out even better. A good example is Mako Magic's marlin, with a flash lighting up his face and the fish it would have captured the special moment even more (Still a great photo). Its easy to get caught in the moment, but try a few photos when the fish are not biting. Then when the big one bites the camera is ready to get that great shot of a life time.

terminating leaders
Submitted by Feral on Fri, 2008-04-04 22:06ok guys here is a question ...
what do you end your leaders with when using heavy lines - pe8 (so about 100lb - 150lb nylon leaders) its more aimed at the jigging/popper rigs as i dont want something too bulky at the start of poppers etc . ... i was thinking of a solid ring with a hawiian snap but was worried the line would cut on the oval shapped ring .. then looked at a large crane swivel or b/b swivel and it looks to bulky.. any answers out there ??

Jigger's Elbow
Submitted by Farflung9a on Sat, 2008-02-16 05:02I started jigging about 5 months ago,I hold/jig the rod with my right strong arm and wind with my left hand although I am not left handed, two weeks ago I started having pains in my right arm mainly around the elbow and on top of the arm below the elbow.
I don't seem to feel much pain when I am actually jigging, but a couple of days later the pain starts, it has not completely disappeared even after quite a few days rest, is this normal and will stop in time or do I need to do some form of exercise?
I am quite a slim guy and do not have arms like Popeye.
Anyone out there had any similar problems?
Tight Lines!

Diawa Saltiga Expedition Z6500
Submitted by Farflung9a on Fri, 2007-11-23 01:18A Buddy has just bough me a Saltiga Expedition Z6500 spooled with Ultra X8 Jig Man 113Lb braid from Hong Kong. Thank you "Fishwrecked" for the names and location of shops in H.G. but on it's arrival here in South Africa i see that the thread for the handle is only for right hand use. I am not left handed but i fish left handed as i like to Jig and fight the fish holding the rod with my strong arm, i do not want to open a brand new reel to experiment, can anyone tell me if the reel can be changed to left hand wind? The instructions are in Chinese and there is a small packet with three washers in the box,are these spares or do i need to install them? I was in Perth last year to visit a mate of mine, so i understand most of the places that you talk about on your site, keep up the good work "Shipwrecked" and Honsu is fast becoming a Legend, perhaps he should stand for Prime Minister? Anyone used/know Shimano Jigrex PE5
Submitted by Mick B on Thu, 2007-11-22 02:31Anyone out there in jigging world used or seen used a Shimano Jigrex spinner PE5 rated for jigs up to 300gm,?
The rod seems to be a handle and tip section with reversed bright chrome Fuji rings and a proper Fuji jigging tip.
Its a sort of dark pinky/red coloured blank with black hyperlon grips and silver allu gimbal.
Found the above spec. rod today in a local store and it seemed a very nice jig rod indeed.
It has a made in Japan label on it also.(?)
I really would appreciate any comments from 'end-users' or anyone who has seen such a rod in action.
Q: Does this rod have a lock-up point, if so where on the rod does the lock-up occur?
Q: Will this rod hold-up when on a 40-60kg fish, or does it fold over with no real fish stopping power?
Q: What is the max. jig I can use?
Q: What is the max. drag I can apply to this rod (at 45degree fighting angle) before I get 'problems'?
Thanks in advance to all who reply.
Looking for a overhead PE6 jig rod
