PE8 Braid
Submitted by Ectopic on Thu, 2009-12-03 20:17Another questions for you folks
:
Trying to decide what braid (PE8) to spool a SW20000 with. I've read that your looking at around about 350m of PE8 braid which kinda sucks given the usual 100, 300, 600 yard/m it is sold in.
I did see that YGK jig man ultra can be bought as 100m 'joined' spools up to 1200m but 'joined' sounds dodgey. Anyone tried this before?

Sambo jigging outfit advice
Submitted by Ectopic on Wed, 2009-11-25 18:00After the absolute ball we had on Tuesday with Saltwater charters I think its time to get some gear
I've got some rods in mind but I'd like some feedback especially those who have used the gear I'm considering.
(Keep in mind: I'm of slim build, not particularly fit, 72 kg)
Potential Rods:
Ripplefisher 5215 (not 5125) or 5210: availability might be an issue
Hots wei world 52XH
Smith Nirai 55 or Smith AMJ 52EX:
I'm looking a a rod with a parabolic action and fairly thin grips - my hands fatigue faster on thicker grips like on shimano T-curves;
Potential Reels:
Stella SW20000, or a different sized 'PG' model if it balances better with a particular rod.
Any thoughts?

Jigging Leader
Submitted by damo6230 on Tue, 2009-11-24 19:48OK guys whats your preference for jigging leader.
Should I be applying the same stealth with leader when jigging as I do with breaming.......
Standard leader brands for something Flourocarbon...
anything from PE 2 through to PE 5-6

Sambo jigging - where to get started?
Submitted by Ectopic on Thu, 2009-11-12 23:59Hi all,
I'm a keen fisho at heart, who doesn't really find much time to fish nowadays.
I got my first taste of jigging and popping during a trip with Nomad in 2008 and only after the trip realised that Perth was renowned for its Sambo fishery!
I'm keen to try it out and I have a few questions;
Do charter operators provide decent gear? (heard Shikari recommended a few times)
How rough does it get on average? (I do get sea-sick)
How many fish would a newbie realistically expect to catch during a day trip? (i.e. is it common for the inexperienced not to catch anything)
Any other info for a newbie would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Eric

Instructional Video - Tying The PR Knot
Submitted by Accident Prone on Tue, 2009-11-10 13:11Hi guys,
I recently posted another video clip on youtube which goes together with my latest article in next months issue of New Zealand Fishing News magazine. The video is on how to tie the PR Knot and just thought I would share it for those who may be new to jigging.
When I filmed it I tried to explain as much as I could but due to the 10min youtube maximum time frame I had to edit a fair bit out so I hope it is still easy enough to understand.
Some people when they start the PR Knot like to tie a lot of loose spirals and onlt spin tight spirals for about 1cm on the underbind before spinning tight spirals all they way back with the overbind. I prefer to spin tight spirals under and over.
here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbhvZi0fiM4

PE2 and PE8 spin rod suggestions
Submitted by HuggyB on Thu, 2009-10-29 19:38I am in the market for the above jig rods. Budget is pretty flexible, but obviously I dont sleep on a pile of money so a $1500+ rod suggestion would be way off the mark.
PE2: Morethan Branzino 3000 with 20lb Sunline PE (my thoughts: Hots Stilletto Slow Style SSS63HS)
PE8: Stella 20000FA with 1 x spool of 78lb PE5 and 1 x spool 100lb Jerry Brown (my thoughts: Wei world 48/52 or Valley Hill Mogi Special Exploder II 53XXS)
Thoughts?!?

Metro Mid-Week Sambo Jigging Day
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Wed, 2009-10-28 23:34One of Kasey's mates is heading over to Perth between the 16-20th November. These dates fall on weekdays. I found it difficult arranging mid-week charter trips last year, simply due to a lack of numbers.
I know Kasey & his mate, including me, would really appreciate a show of hands of those fellow FW members that could possibly join us jigging.
We still haven't decided on a charter operator, however, this can be discussed pending numbers.
Any takers?
Daz.

Record GT photo
Submitted by Bozos on Mon, 2009-10-12 13:23Hi fellow fisho's. By now many of you would have heard of the Bozos katch 1 jigs so i thought I would attach some photos of recent catches. This GT was caught on a 600 gram katch 1 jig. These jigs actually send out a hummm due to their design and flutter on the drop yet still have a fast sink rate. The technique used is also very different. We use Japanese mechanical jigging technique where you turn half a turn on the lift and half a turn on the drop. Because the jigs actually hummm in the water you can slow the action right down and this method is also much easier on the body and enables you to jig relatively heavy jigs with ease. Anythin you would like to know please ask. Cheers phil Bozos

Jigging Master Gear
Submitted by scottg on Tue, 2009-10-06 21:01Hey guys,
Was recently out with a charter off the Gold Coast (local boat 'chaos') and was surprised with the abundance of jigging options we had - from pearl perch, to amberjack, kings and even some nannygai in 200 meters. I initially jigged with a daiwa dogfight and jigging master 400g rod and rod the reel to have too high ratio so switched to the new PE 6 jigging master reels straight off the boat from the boys in taiwan. Was ABSOLUTELY STOKED at how these reels performed...outperformed my 4000L set up and saltiga 40!!! he also had the PE 4 models matched to 250g rods which were terrific for the 85 meter stuff. We jigged the PE6's on the new 3 kings rods - soft taper like a 300gm but loads up like a 500 - truely a credit to the guy at JM....we ended up with over 20 kings, all around 10kg, 7 AJ's, one tipping 27kg (though caught on a livie) and heaps of nanny's.
The skipper orders most of his gear overseas and was unable to tell me of any dealerships here where i would find a good range of JM gear? I would also love it if someone had one of those 3 kings blanks for me to roll my own custom on...
Cheers,
Scott

What do you jig with?
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Sat, 2009-10-03 22:45I just thought I would put a new thread out there to see what jig outfits fellow FW members are using.
Interested in all light, medium & heavy jigging outfits. Everything from rods to line.
Let me know what you use & how you rate your jigging outfit (light & comfortable - heavy & tiring etc.)

Shore Jigging!
Submitted by Jack Dawson on Fri, 2009-09-18 12:57Hello all,
Thought I'd post up my latest capture on a method I have been experimenting with for a couple of years! It is similar to jigging but in fairness is more of a spinning/jigging hybrid technique involving long casts and short jigging bursts followed by free-spooling the jig back to the bottom! So far I have nailed a few small/medium sized groper, harlequin, kings, pesky salmon and now (after about 10 bust offs) a solid samson. I was pretty stocked with the capture as I got him on my "light" spin gear (in comparison to the GT gear I normally use), 7' trinnus, oceano, 30lb braid and 40lb leader and a 40gm cougar occy jig (with 1/0 hooks). Gonna give this a good go at Steep Pt over summer! He weighed 30kg but I was fishing alone so had to deal with self timed photography...
Anyway I hope you enjoy the piccy!

hi vs low speed catalina for jigging?
Submitted by turts on Thu, 2009-09-17 09:02hey guys looking at heading over the WA for samson jigging. have never done it before and im looking at purchasing my own outfit.
im tossing up the option of the Catalina 4500 but im unsure whether to go the high-speed 4500H or the standard 4500. i am aware of the ratio's of both reels and from my understanding it is easier to jig with the high speed but harder to crank up a big sambo. so far i am leaning towards the low speed 4500.
what do you guys recon with all your jiggin experience over there?? which one would be the best option...
if it helps ill be running a catalina 56S-8/10 rated to 330gm jig and around 50lb braid.
cheers in advance

Jigging Christmas Island
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Sun, 2009-08-23 20:47Hi all,
I'm off to Christmas Island with a mate in 3 weeks. I'll be under the guide of Mark (Shorefire Charters). He's obviously the person to speak to concerning the jigging potential over there, but I thought I would get some FW members input - either experiences/techniques.
I'll be fishing for a week chasing a multitude of species. Focussing heavily on GT's & jigging deep water.
My goal is to jig up a doggy. I've been jigging plenty of times off Perth for sambos & in QLD waters for AJ's. I'll be relying on my jigging technique/skill to entice a dog.
Can anyone offer some advice on what jigs to use - experiences with jigging tuna's etc.
I'll be taking my saltiga 6500exp & stella 10000/20000. I'll be fishing PE6 & PE8 & will probably use 100lb leader for a better jig action.
I'm also in the market for a new jig rod. I've seen plenty of topics on jig rods, so I apologise if it's getting repetitive for some members.
The rod must be suited to the reels mentioned - fish PE's mentioned - be suitable for dogs & other speedsters- fish jigs from 100g to350g - limited to $600 budget - and comfortably fish 9-14kg of drag. So far, I've been interested in the SEED & Xzoga range. Any opinions?
Cheers
Daz.

So Who Is Using Van Staals???
Submitted by Accident Prone on Fri, 2009-07-24 08:56Hey lads,
I am thinking about purchasing a new heavy (PE8) spin set for jigging kings here in NZ and am starting to feel an urge to find out a little more on the Van Staal VS250 or VSB250.
I would either go with a Saltiga Expedition Z6500, a Stella 20000PG, or a Van Staal if I can find out enough about them....
So who has one and has thrash tested it? Can anyone give me some pro's and cons on it as we don't get them here in NZ so i can't even take a look at one. I have fished with both the Salty and Stella so i don't need any info on them, just the VS250 or the VSB250.
I think they are a little lighter than the Shimano and Daiwa, but don't have as much drag? anyone know how much drag they have?
Would like to spool it with around 250-300m of PE8.
Cheers,
Josh

Rod advice
Submitted by kane on Mon, 2009-07-20 19:26Hi
So was looking at getting a Saltiga S-EXTREME 64 COMBI JERK rod matched to a Saltiga
S-Extreme 4500 reel for jigging...
But recently Ive heard the rods are basically pieces of crap....anyone had any experiences with these rods or can suggest a good alternative to match up with the 4500 reel?
EDIT> Also the guy who reckons the saltiga rods are rubbish recommended a Catalina 62s instead.....? Im fairly new to jigging so anyones thoughts appreciated.

Submitted by Accident Prone on Mon, 2009-07-20 07:10Gidday all,
I have a group of friends (all keen and experienced jig fisherman) wanting to cross the ditch from NZ and go and play with some Samson fish.
We are looking at either this coming season or the next if bookings aren't already full.
The boat I am looking at is Shikari Charters - Has anyone fished with them before? thoughts? how many jiggers can fish at the same time (comfortably)?
Thanks,

Rod advice, Saltiga bay jigging rod?
Submitted by MiSh on Tue, 2009-06-30 15:35Im looking for a 20-30lb light jig combo to use on the 5 fathom bank with large plastics and lucanus style jigs. Have had a play with the saltiga bay jiging rod and it feels amazing. Extremly light abd feels like 12-15lb rod rather than a 20lb rod. Just wondering if anyone out there has actually used one or if anyone has advice to a similar rod.
Also i cant decide wheter to go spin or baitcaster. If i go spin ill get another daiwa seagate 3000 (awsome little reel) but im also looking a a daiwa blue backer 200. I know if comparing apples and orranges but what would you prefer to fish with under 30m?
