Cheap Shark Shields!
Submitted by oz74 on Tue, 2014-01-14 09:40ad on gumtree yesterday for shark shields for $100 if anyone is looking for one?
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/fremantle/surfing/shark-shields-/1036237379
I had a look this morning and grabbed two of the dive units.
there were still quite a few left - mostly the Freedom 4 units.
all were in excellent condition and a couple had never been used.
im pretty sure that the batteries for these units cant be replaced - so when they cant be recharged they are useless, but for $100 and with the amount of use they would have had to date, still a good few years of use to go.
cheers
Brett

Fishing; with a cray snare
Submitted by Swompa on Tue, 2014-01-14 06:58Went for a couple of dives on the weekend off Rockingham, and for the first time in a very long time, managed to spot a couple of flathead sitting in some sand patches between seaweed. Wasn’t quite sure what the one on Saturday was, but the one in the photo below, measured out at 49cm. Funny part is that I caught it with a snare which got me thinking, what has anyone else picked up with a snare?
In the past I have caught plenty of Cuttlefish, puffer fish and of course crays. I managed to noose a Dusky Morwong around the tail once but it flicked and broke my snare (day over crayfish wise), and have never tried again.
So what have you caught via a cray snare?

Passed our freedive course
Submitted by Paul G on Mon, 2014-01-13 17:12 Well spent the weekend at Rotto doing the freedive course with Jackie , top lady and a great instructor. Jesse reached 14.m could have got 20m ,but the last spot the charter anchored was only 12m Jesse went down to the bottom and sat for 25-30 seconds before coming up.top effort
. I did 12m but had trouble with one ear so didn't push it too much .Sure was different without a reg in the gob. We will be practicing our freediving for the next few months and then may try stage two 30m. Anyone looking to do a freediving course I would highly recommend Jackie .Just give Perth diving academy a call they are running the course each weekend $450 course two days diving of rotto with lunch provided .

Man jumps ship of Scarborough
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2014-01-13 14:29We were involved in rather unusual rescue yesterday.
see nine news video attached - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s68ptgOckyA&feature=youtube_gdata
We received a call that a vessel had a person onboard that was in shock, not moving or talking. Position was 6nm West of Scarborough.
We left Ocean Reef Marina at speed and arrived on secene within 10 minutes. When we arrive found a vessel had picked up 2 crew from a nearby cargo ship that had jumped it the water. The second man had jumped in the save the first man.
Attempts were made to transfer him to our vessel but he would not move. After speaking the the captain of the cargo ship we escorted the other boat back to Hillarys where ambulance and police were waiting.
Apart from that a busy weekend with capsize Saturday and numerous vessel needing our assistance to get back to shore. Given the heat on land was not a bad place to be on the water once the wind changed direction.
Expected it to be a lot busier but I think most decided it was better in air con that out in 44 & 41 degrees

For those of you missing pots ..............
Submitted by alfred on Sun, 2014-01-12 17:28I went over to Rotto on yesterday and on the reef outside Longreach Bay, there must have been close to a hundred pots. I snorkeled over to take a look and all the pots were empty and alot of the lines were tangled up. I really doubt the pots were set there as there was a good mix of short, long, very long and very very long lines, but suspect that they might have been moved by the currents and all ended up in about the same place. So if you are missing pots, go take a look.

Buying Chooks
Submitted by Bodie on Wed, 2014-01-08 09:21Am chasing a few chooks for home, anyone know a place North of the river where you can buy them?
Called a couple but seems most don't have any at present. Young ready to lay chooks, prefer Rhode island reds.
Plenty of Isa browns about, but hoping to get the bigger reds.
Cheers

Shark cull protesters
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2014-01-07 20:51Watched a bit on ABC 7.00 news with the tree hugger Peterfy and a couple of others preparing a boat to head out and interfere with the shark baiting program. The ali dinghy looked like the one NOAH used to transport animals on to the ARK powered by a 15hp Chrysler outboard. Think they were only in service for a couple of years and finished approx. 20 years ago----looks like they are getting some real modern gear to wage their campaign
Looking forward to when the first baits hit the water and the reaction to it.

spare a moment for the victims
Submitted by straith on Tue, 2014-01-07 02:01Can we all spare a moment to reflect with all the calls for dangerous animals that occasionally follow their instinct to feed to be eliminated as a threat to society the recent unwarranted and inexplicable cold blooded murder of a beautiful mother and her child whilst gardening and playing in the apparent safety of their home in warwick this week.
Please can we keep some perspective and unite as a race against these inhuman infections that plague our society from within. If only they had fins on their backs so we could recognise them and kill them before they were able to attack....
The real threat.
Deepest sympathy to the families.

Broome boaties loose a much needed boat ramp
Submitted by Redchoppa on Mon, 2014-01-06 19:32State Gov has canned the much needed Brome boat ramp as of 19 December. Silly thing to do as it has got to be the worst example of a boat ramp in wa. It has about 40 metres of ramp leaving you about 500 metres between the ramp and your boat at low tide. My mates there are fuming over that decision.

New addition to jazz charters
Submitted by flash as on Fri, 2014-01-03 17:52 So Drew asked if I could cut him a peice of cutting board for his rather sad looking aluminum bait board that came with the boat. I decided that with the $$ that jazz4is worth and the great looking boat that it is this bait board was simply not up to the standard it should have been. So with a week of my efforts some quality jarrah from bunnings and some other bling I created this! I am pretty chuffed to say the least! It came out amazing! Now I can't wait to blood it! Thanks for reading! Ads

Xtreme cryovac update
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Tue, 2013-12-31 14:30Hi all.
The Evapac vac sealer continues to be a very popular item.
As you should be aware, FW members can purchase this item from current FW sponsors Oceanside Tackle and Marine and Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz. I would like to announce that the Evapac is also now available at Getaway Outdoors in Bentley. This is making it even easier to have a look at this product. Drop in to see Glen and his team in Bentley who are always happy to help.
The Evapac machine comes with 25bags and jar attchements for all preserving needs.
What are the benefits of this machine?
1. Does not heat up at all while sealing, there is no need to wait between bags.
2. Safety moisture cut off which detects if there is too much moisture present which protects the element.
3. Powerful suction.
4. Proven testing by myself. My machine is nearly 6 years old and still going strong.
5. 2 year warranty.
These stores are owned by serious fisherman and will point you in the right direction.
Regards
Xtreme Dave

GPS Marks
Submitted by psion on Tue, 2013-12-31 13:22Hi Gents, I was looking for some more GPS spots for fishing and decided that a book would be a great start, I bought one on line (The GPS handbook).
While it contains over 3000 marks, that cover Australia, there are no marks/spots, between Rotto/Coburn and Geralton. So for all you newbees looking for a local spot, the book aint gonna help.
There are quite a few around Coburn and Rotto and then the start from Geralton again.
That means 1 of 2 things,
1\ there are no fish there, or
2\ it's the one of the best kept secrets.
Me I'm gonna have to go with the latter.

Lisa snorkling Salmon bay, Rottnest Island , Western Australia by Marc Russo (Australia), on Flickr As you can see in the last image , Lisa was out snorkling while i was out taking photos. When i cam back i found a dugite sniffing through all out bags and snorkle bag. Lucky i had the go pro on a 2 meter pole and killed to birds with one stone. Used it to shoo it off and get some great footage. As you can see its didnt bite just reared up and bumpped the camera and wasnt agressive so it goes to show that they arnt the bad ass snake everyone makes out but you do have to be really carefull. If i wasnt paying attention i would of grabbed my camera bag and may have been bitten . Spent the rest of the day warning tourists. I couldnt be there all day/ week or year so i pit this vid together to show the dangers and to take care.. Here is the vid.....
