Lano out wide and eerie
Submitted by joe m on Fri, 2012-01-27 19:36Got up at gentlemens hours and headed off to Lano with Gav and Matt. I have never fished off there before so its was gonna be a day of exploring. Our first couple stops were in 35m but nothing seemed to be interested in our offerings. had some time up our sleeves as the fish didnt come on the chew til around lunch time yesterday so we ventured out to the 50's where i found a nice little lump. the size of the black arse we were catching were nothing short of amazing and there were heaps of just sized pinkies commin over the side as well. just after 11 i nailed a nice dhue of 14.5kg. Not long after Matts rod buckled over and it was smiles all round...until a f#&@in sambo popped up. The sambos were causing grief for the next half hour so with a cracker dhue and 4 huge black arse i called it a day and started to tidy the boat. Thats when Gavs octo jig took a whack! With Matt and I pissing ourselves laughing Gav battled the beast with a locked drag and not too much care at all. Didnt our laughter turn to high fives when an 11kg dhuie popped up! cant wait to get back up there

Marianne Mackay - nearly started a massacre with the PM
Submitted by saltatrix on Fri, 2012-01-27 14:32The same woman, Marianne Mackay, the paid shit stirrer that nearly started the punch up at the Fremantle no fishing zone protest and march which was civil until she started a riot is at it again but flew to Canberra just to do it again.
Talk about a disgusting embarrassment to the real indigenous of this country.
Marianne Mackay, chairwoman of the WA Deaths in Custody Watch Committee, said she was one of a group of protesters who ran from the Aboriginal tent embassy

Echo sounder Help
Submitted by Cortez474 on Fri, 2012-01-27 12:15Hi everyone...... Just joined the site.... Very interesting and informative....
I recently bought my first boat, the colour sounder it came with is an old jvc jrc 61.......not sure exactly how ols it is but seems to work very well....... My problem is distinguishing what the colours mean...... I know red is a hard bottom and I'm pretty sure light red/orange is coral...... But what are the others?? ( yellow, blue and green?)
And how do I tell what is sand? Is the second sounding I get important in working this out??
Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Fireworks
Submitted by davidbland50 on Fri, 2012-01-27 00:23What an awesome night of fireworks. I was amazed too, that there were about half as many boats as last year, and I was wondering why. Whether the heat put people off, or was it because of the extra fireworks created by nature in the way of that electical storm that passed through just as it started. It just added to the spectacular. Did any other fishwreckers go?

Very Lucky Divers
Submitted by Iceman on Thu, 2012-01-26 07:54yesterday morning we got a call that 2 divers had been picked up from just inside Staggies Reef of Mindarie and were requesting help to locate thier boat.
Apparently they anchored on the east Side of the reef and went for a dive. When they surfaced the boat was drifting across the reef and out to sea. Luckily it made it over the reef without capsizing. They were in the water for 3 hours before a passing vessel found them. We located the vessel abourt 7nm of the coast.
Lesson here - if they had logged on the us (whitfords Sea Rescue) and advised a surface time we would have sent our vessl out to look for them within 15 minutes of them not surfacing. We take overdue divers very seriously for this reason.
I have been involved in a lot of searches for missing divers over the years when their vessel is found adrift or on the beach. The only indication of divers is the dive flag. Locating them can be difficult. One time the divers spent 8 hours in the water.
I urge all divers to log on with your local sea rescue when you go diving.

DoT Swan River Australia Day regulations
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2012-01-25 18:43
Skippers will be required to navigate several exclusion zones, implemented around barges, on the river in the days prior and on the day of the event. There are also special restrictions on Perth Water on Australia Day.
The restrictions include:
- an eight knot speed limit will apply from Quarry Point to the Causeway Bridges including all of Perth Water between 3pm and 11pm;
- Perth Water will be closed to all vessels from 4.45pm to 9.45pm;
- vessels are only to anchor or moor in the spectator craft areas; and,
- the Narrows Bridge main navigation channel (centre arch only) is to be used by all vessels.
In addition, the personal watercraft freestyle area west of the Narrows Bridge will be closed from 3pm to allow vessels to anchor.
The Belmont ski area will also be closed from 3pm to accommodate an increase in river traffic from the Maylands and Goodwood Parade boat ramps.
Boat owners are also reminded that after dark the open speed limit on the Swan and Canning Rivers is restricted to 10 knots.
While it is not a requirement for all vessels to be fitted with a radio, boats fitted with one are asked to monitor 27.88 MHz or VHF 9 and 16 (call sign is ‘marine Command’). These frequencies are for any on water information or instructions relating to the event. A message will be broadcast on these channels detailing closures and reopening of Perth Waters.
All vessels must have the correct combination of navigation lights when they are on the water after sunset to sunrise. In addition, although not compulsory, it is recommended life jackets and flares are carried on board when on the river.
It is an offence to navigate a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Be aware of the dangers associated with heavily populated mooring areas. When anchoring, failure to allow for vessel swing in strong winds could result in damage to vessels and injury to passengers. The propellers of passing vessels pose a significant threat to the safety of those passengers who swim in the water in mooring areas and overloaded vessels could capsize if swamped.
All skippers require a Recreational Skipper's Ticket to be in charge of a vessel with a motor of more than 4.5 kilowatts (6HP).
There will be an estimated 1,200 vessels on the water for the event and skippers need to be alert at all times and ready to respond in the case of an emergency situation. DoT Marine Officers would be on hand to advise uncertain members of the boating public.
People wanting a copy of the guide or more information can log on to www.transport.wa.gov.au and click on the button on the home page.

Submitted by timboon on Tue, 2012-01-24 13:15FW Crew,
As I continue to accumilate creature comforts to take away camping it is time I added a shower to the list which will help keep the missus keen to get away.
I've got a good 12v power pack which I'll rig it up to but was wondering what type are the best brand to buy.
I have heard they can stuff up easily if left to cool in water so best to remove after each use.
I have also heard of making yourself outa a bilge pump... Whats your thoughts crew...

Navara / Rodeo/ Hilux / Triton
Submitted by mattyoga on Mon, 2012-01-23 14:08Looking to get a diesel 4WD twin cab ute and have narrowed it down to rodeo, hilux, triton or navara. Will be getting something in the 95-05 vintage. Wanted peoples opinions on the above and specifically:
1) what are the non turbo diesel versions of the vehicles like? - there are plenty of non turbo tritons about, but will they be painful to drive at 110km/h for hours? I won't by towing a boat, just kayaks on the roof so don't need good towing capability, just want to be able to sit on 110km/h without feeling like its hard work. Not that fussed about acceleration either, I don't fang it about.
2) Are any of them bad on fuel economy? I've heard some stories of the newer Navara's sucking on the juice - I know the 2.8TD rodeos are pretty good, though wondered if any of them are stand out bad? For example, the 2.7 TD '96 Navara? I've heard some of the gearing on some models means the engine revs pretty high at 110km/h giving poor fuel economy.
Cheers
Matt

heads up karratha cyclone headin your way (apparently)
Submitted by biggerfish on Mon, 2012-01-23 13:38hey guys just thought I'd give the guys in Karratha a heads up. I'm currently on the hermod a Dutch crane barge working on the North Rankin B jacket instulation we have been on cyclone watch the last 2 days and as of midnight last night We have now pulled all 10 anchors and are sailing sw at a rate of 5 knts (perfect trolling speed). We've all looked at BOM forecasts and cant see that its going to come close to us but Woodside made the call to start moving and at a cost of $1.5 million dollars a day for the hermod and us to be out here it must be a pretty sure thing. Apparently the forecaser that woodside pays big $$$$ too has checcked his models and predicts the cyclone to be around cat4 and heading straight over Rankin and heading for K town. Hope its not right for the guys in Ktowns sake but kinda hope it hangs around out here for a while wouldnt mind watching dvds and playing chess for the next 16 days beats welding in this heat and humidity. On another note has anyone got any suggestions for making some lures we are thinking about getting some spoons from the kitchen welding a few together maybe a few fraid strands of rope and making some sort of hook and tieng it too some scaff wire and 10mm rope surely wed get a mak attack or two.

Xtreme news and information
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Fri, 2012-01-20 20:19Hi all, hope the hot weather and summer fun is reaping its rewards.
Time for an Xtreme update:
Firstly, happy new year to you all. It has been good to see so many of you getting into some fish. Whether it is in the Swan or out in the ocean, it has been a very productive start to 2012.
How can you get an Xtreme Cooler?
There are a couple of ways you can get an Xtreme Cooler. 1: You can contact Dave on 0403978583 who will answer all of your questions. 2: You can go and visit Ryan and Blake at Oceanside Tackle and Marine. 3: You can visit Dave Cole and Damo at Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz. 4: You can visit Dave at the warehouse in MT Lawley to view all of the range. All products sizes and dimensions are on the website. Visit xtremeproducts.com.au for information on current stock.
If you are in the Country and need a box transported, Xtreme Coolers use Australia Post, Davis Road Transport and Fastway Couriers Australia to get the cooler box to you. It's as simple as giving Dave a call for a price in transport to your area.
What's on special at the moment?
Well the big box special is currently running.
We are taking $100.00 off the XT260litre cooler. This means the price for the XTSH260litre cooler in Marble is only $380.00
The second special on offer to FW members is the new XT20litre beer cooler in marble. (Very popular in Dunsborough) This new cooler comes with a carry strap and fits 15 stubbies and ice. I have used mine to death so far this summer and have been very impressed. This item is normally priced $65.00.
For FW members it is only $58.00.
What else can you find at Xtreme Coolers?
We have the new Italian designed Evapac cryavac machine on board. This machine has been tested by Dave over the past three years. The Evapac is strong, versatile and convenient. It does not need cooling time between packaging and comes with a safety mechanism to protect the element. If you want to pack fish quickly, efficiently and want a machine that lasts, then come and have look at how the Evapac works. A great price at $210.00 and the availability of three bag sizes.
Small 100, Medium 50 and Large 25. All $35.00 each.
Postage for the Cryocav is minimal:
Perth Metro: $8.00
Country: $13.00
We back our products 100% and have put them all to the test.
So if you are after a new cooler box that works and a cryovac that is brilliant at doing its job, then give Dave a call to discuss your needs and he will get you sorted.
Let's all hope for an endless summer.
Regards
Dave

Be very careful in the bush...
Submitted by tailor marc on Thu, 2012-01-19 17:14Well its finally happend. In the last year i have stepped on a tigersnake, last week in kalbarri i just about stepped on a whip snake while cutting through the dunes at whittacarra creek . Each time while wearing shorts and thongs.
Last night at bells rapids lookout i hopped out the car and was walking about 5 meters from the car on the gravel next to the road. I wasnt watchn where i was walking and stepped on this snake, it bit my shin. I jumped back in massive shock and realised it was only a stimmy python. THANK GOD!!!!!!
Got a nice couple bite mark on my leg. SOOOOO lucky it wasnt a tiger, dugite or a death adder which are all found there. Took these shots strait after of it mega pissed off. Lovley markings on it and a really health specimen.
Time to buy some decent boots me thinks....

Shark bite at Coral Bay
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2012-01-19 16:46Just heard that a bloke has been bitten on an arm at Coral Bay. He is being flown down to RPH and should arrive around 1900.
Not sure if he was snorkelling at the time when he was bitten but he was brought ashore by boat. Believe to have major tissue and nerve damage to his arm.
Don't know what type of shark was involved in the attack.
