point walter session
Submitted by tombstone on Sun, 2011-12-11 17:30Hi Guys,
Went for a quick session today with the yak at point walter, got there about 11.00am and left around 12.30pm, end result was 6 flathead, 4 flounder, 4 whitting and many blowies. Largest flatty was roughly 58cm smallest was 38cm, largest flounder was roughly dinner plate size the others were average, all caught on a TT vibe golden boy 1/4 oz. all released to fight another day, was impressed with the whitting hitting the vibe though, that's a first for me, weren't huge or anything, but still a first for me.
Sorry no photo's but haven't got me a water proof camera yet, and wasn't risking the phone going for a swim.
cheers.

Today's crays
Submitted by r.gates on Sun, 2011-12-11 16:27Hi all
Headed out this morning at 7.30am for another go at the crays and I'm happy to report that we got another feed. Didn't have to go too far out from The Cut again.
Snared 8 in total but lost one trying to put it in the catch bag....of course, it had to be the biggest one of the day
On returning to the boat it was out with the gauge and while these 4 didn't need to be measured, the other 3 were close....the minimum size is 76mm and I've only got a 77mm gauge and this was a 'loose fit' so I erred on the side of caution and returned them to the water....I know where they live!!
Saw heaps of kackas so that's promising for later on/next season. The vis was only about 7 - 8m and the undercurrent was reasonably strong but it wasn't too uncomfortable.
Don't know whether the shark shield zapping me had anything to do with cramp, but my left leg seized up and that's a bastard when you're trying to get back to the boat....yeah, I know, toughen up gates!!
Back at the ramp just after 11am and home for bbq cray for lunch...went down a treat, again.
regards

ps: don't bother fishing the spot in the vid as we moved spots for pics. :P

Darwin to Perth road trip...Exmouth land based fishing
Submitted by worldfisher on Sat, 2011-12-10 15:18Hi Guys, been a while to get to write this up. After i reached Darwin i went to South Africa for 5 weeks and then returned via Singapore to Darwin where a friend and I got a camper van and drove down the west coast fishing. it was a bit easier than riding the bicycle and gave a bit more fishing scope!!
just starting to arrange Norway to south africa on the bicycle so if any of you guys have any contacts between those two countries that might help catch me a fish i would be most grateful for the help...
all the best, Scott www.worldbiker.blogspot.com
In singapore my mate and I went for a fish on the reservoirs targeting the Peacock bass that have been released by some aquarium hobbyists. We managed a few small ones on the fly and spinner and saw a few beasts in the shallows. this was the best of the bunch. A good looking fish!
In South Africa I managed to get after some Sharp toothed catfish and blue Tilapia on the local crocodile river. These two tilapia were the best of the bunch and pretty tasty after being bbqed.
Sharp toothed catfish. We found dead doves were good bait..nice amount of blood that pulled the cats in quick. was quite fun collecting bait too!
Back in Darwin i went out with a mate on his boat. we did a little fishing but most of the time Jamie worked as he is a coral collector. when we did stop the action was fast and furious with small gts all over the poppers.
Parked up on a reef to the east of darwin at low tide. Two big Gts nearly nailed my roosta popper here. they were trapped in a big deep blue hole in the middle of the dry reef...the last second they turned and vanished! damn
we stopped in Kakadu where i hoped my mate would bag a few fish to start the trip off. he got some barra and lost a few tarpon. Croc phobia seemed to have hit him pretty bad so it wasnt long til we were back on the road.
Camping in kakadu
Nick with a small barra taken on a surface lure in Kakadu
On the move south somewhere in the kimberley region.
fruit bats roosting next to the road.
This was the first sea fish we caught. at point samson..not quite what we had in mind but welcome all the same!
along the road we saw some decent wildlife including this frill necked lizard who was keen to eat a fly!
Exmouth was the destination and we headed there fairly quickly,,,...seemed the best all round destination where we could get some good fish land based
Got this little beauty in the marina. also dropped a couple of small trevally that day and saw a few sharks sniffing around
First day and we had a look around bundegi and managed to lure a few fish including three coral trout, a nice rock cod and a little barracuda...
coral trout on metal slice
Cod on soft plastic
we did a bit of night fishing for sharks and rays.. got this nice leopard/ zebra shark first up
and then this beauty
and this one..
and nick got this one that nearly spooled his twin power 12000 which was quite amusing! see here
http://www.youtube.com/user/worldfisher1#p/a/u/0/LbR6ZabxJA4
The Flies were pretty annoying in exmouth
Resident Osprey at bundegi..
Down at the mildura wreck there were a few small gt's around just before sunset everyday..a silver stick bait produced the hits and the biggest probably went 6kg which was fun on light gear. wading out to waist deep water gave the best chance to reach fish...turtles and sharks were swimming around my legs and even a dugong past within a few metres from me..
trevally on the stick bait..

The 12 hour Tailor, shark and mulla sesh!!!
Submitted by ealzee on Thu, 2011-12-08 13:30hi guys this is my first report hope it goes alright.... A mate and I decided to spend an allnighta a few hours nth of perth (between lancilin and cervantes) ;) to do a late arvo tailor sesh, early night for shark(bronze whaler we after) then go for mulloway from 12 to dawn till the tailor bite again in the morning. WOT A CRACKER OF A SESH WE HAD!!!.
got the lines by 5:30 arvo, first cast!!! Mates on to his PB tailor in seconds while i'm still baiting up!! From then on we landed tailor after tailor, there were jumping all over the place. The smallest one being 43cm and the largest 59cm! we both landed 10 each about in an hour and a half, we kept 3 for dinner and due to some ferious hookups, some were fatal so ended up filleting 2 for bait. aahhh finally a smoke and a drink break before cooking some very fresh tailor on the gas burner. Perfect!! but.. its far from over.....
We then walked up the beach to a point where very shallow sandy waters meet a drop off that runs into some deeper reefy sections. We change rigs to capture a shark or two and on go the fillets! 2 beach rods 50m apart. Now the waiting game..... didnt have to wait long within 5 to 10 min my reel sizzles.. then nothing. i'm baiting up again my mate reel screaming for 15sec, then nothing!! WTF is going on!! Out go our baits almost instantly on again and again spat the hooks. 2min later my mates on finally hooked. with not more than a 40 sec fight a small bronzie appeared in the shallows absolutley exhausted!!! We beach him!! This little shark has been going back and forth taking our baits!!!! My mates first bronzie and i have to congratulate him on that!! we had i big bust off with a large run of about 200m before busting on reef! It took a whole large tailor head. WTF?? landed an eagle ray small one.
By this stage it bout 2 in the morning and nothing was seeming to fire so we rested up and got a lines back in at first light for a few casts at the tailor before heading off. and i was rewarded with the biggest tailor of the trip.
all and all very good trip but not perfect... still no mulla

Abalone Fishing
Submitted by Matt T on Wed, 2011-12-07 13:03Abalone at Trigg
The abalone season had come around again and it was time to hunt for some of the tasty little beggars at the local reef. I like the short season as abalone is quite rich and you could not eat it everyday (i'm sure some people would disagree), so having only a few weekends a year to have a feed works out well. I also enjoy the early morning swim and the fact that it's all done in under an hour.
My brother Jimmy has finally come back to live in Perth with his wife (and new baby son), after spending a few years living in LA and playing guitar for the metal/rock band Helmet. I thought it was high time to bring him back to reality and get out there in the ocean and pick up a morning feed of ab's. He was actually really keen to get in the water again, it's funny beacuse the spot where we hunt for the ab's is only a few hundred meters up from where he would take me snorkling when I was a kid.
So on Sunday we met up at 6:45am at trigg beach and got geared up. As always there were heaps of people getting ready and it can be a real pain in the arse to find a parking space. I had picked Jimmy up an ab knife, gauge and bag during the week as this would be his first time going for ab's. He had some gloves that he had used for snorkling but had forgotten them - oh well, he'll be right. It was a beautiful morning, the tide was really low and the sea like glass. By the time we had walked down to the beach it was 2 minutes to 7am and for that we were thankful as it had become pretty damn hot in our wetsuits.
Diving into the water felt fantastic, there is nothing like cool clear seawater to wake you up out of that early moring daze. The sight up and down the beaches is incredible on the abalone mornings - literally hundreds of people clambering over the reefs, some still fully dressed with absolutely no diving/water gear. Lots of people don't even seem to be able to swim - it is a real worry as even on a calm, flat day like Sunday, the surge below is still considerable. Some people have to remember that no seafood dinner - no matter how nice - is worth dying for. It was worth noting that even with so many people in the water at one place all chasing the same limited resource, there was not one fisheries officer to be seen. One would think that with a season of only an hour, that they would have every officer available at the main metro sites. They must have been up the road.
Jimmy and i swum around the reef and came up to the sides that would, on a higher tide, be bashed with the sea as this is were the abalone love to sit. Right in the white water. This obviously makes them hard to take on anything but the low tides as you just keep getting smashed against the reef before you can pry the buggars off. It was quite easy pickings and there were some great sizes there that meant I had more than ten in the bag within about 10 minutes. Just then Jimmy swum over and told me he had nicked himself by accidentaly grabbing the ab knife by the blade. Within half an hour we both had our bag limit (20) and proceeded to swim in. Jimmy showed me his cut finger and it was really bleeding now so we dashed up the beach and wrapped it up at the car.
We met back at my place to shuck and trim the ab's as I've got a handy fish cleaning station in the back yard. A couple of band aids on Jimmy's finger and he was ok - I rekon it probably could have used a stitch or two though. The ab's cleaned up beautifully and I put them in a soy, chilli and garlic marinade to share with guests coming over later that day. Anyway, a couple of pics below of the abalone after cleaning - hope you liked the report.

Our first taste...
Submitted by r.gates on Mon, 2011-12-05 21:44Hi all
After hearing and reading about all the crays being caught since the season opened, I finally got out there amongst them on Saturday. We didn't have to venture too far from The Cut and although the ground was real lumpy, it only held a few...enough for a taste, at least.
Also got to christen the new shark shield and I'm happy to report that it was working just fine....I lost count of the number of times it zapped the hell out of me!
Didn't take the camera down with me because we were hell bent on trying for a feed, but sure will next time....saw a small dhuie, a monster sambo, schools of buff bream and skippy.
Cooked them on the bbq with some olive oil, pepper and salt...went down a treat.
The weather isn't looking too flash for the next few days but as soon as it clears up, we'll be out there again.
regards

Billfish at Rotto
Submitted by Grooveepants on Mon, 2011-12-05 05:58Went trolling for Tuna yesterday South side of Rotto and my first hook up had the reel screaming off line. When the fish wasn't running, the weight was substantial and I could barely lift it up the water column. After about 5 minutes I felt something slip like the trebbles had tore free and all of a sudden the weight wasn't there but I still had a fish on. I thought I must have been hooked up to two Tuna or something and one had gotten off. Anyway when I got the tuna to the surface and into the boat I realised that it had markings that indicated something had been hanging onto it. There was only one small pucture mark on the top of its head and the rest was just discolouration caused by the pressure of whatever had been holding onto it. Even the drag mark along it body was visible from when I felt something slip.
Could a billfish have taken my tuna before I got to my rod?
Any other fish would have left teeth marks and it was a good sized tuna so I don't think a sambo would have nabbed it?
Any ideas?

Margaret River Bream Report
Submitted by barrabass on Sun, 2011-12-04 23:05Hey Fishos,
This is my report from my last weekend down south. (Margaret River Region)
Saturday:
Headed down to the Rivermouth for a fish. Fished for about 3h and was only rewarded by 2 tiny bream on bait and a herring on fly (and my mate got a tiny bream on a lure which he foul hooked). Pretty Crappy Morning but the vid can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXV68LZ_Nxc&feature=youtu.be
Later at night as we were at a friends house for dinner in Busselton my mate and I went and fished the marina for bream, ended up with 3 Tailor, a Snook, a Small Snapper and some random un-identifiable fish. Great time, after dinner we went out again to the marina walls in search for mulloway but we needed to catch some bait first. The only thing that took out bait was a 3 and a half kilo Sea Sweep which we lost as only using 2kg line so we tried to gaff it, AKA: no bait out for mulloway :( (If only I had kept that snook for bait!!! :( ) In the end we fished there for 5h and the video can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np-voC2ABmo
Sunday:
Took the ‘yaks out and headed up the river for a 3 and a half hour sesh and we had a lot of fun!! The bream were all 20cm+, which is good size for the Margaret. Got about 15 from the yak and land based. The biggest was 27cm and was taken on a gulp crabby 2” (great lures and would highly recommend (not affiliated) ) Over all a great day, You can see the video at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQTRPC8oxlA
Thanks for reading.
PS: Good work to the Firefighters whom fought the Prevelly fires as they did a great job, there is so much burned bushland and most of the fires have burned peoples front yards even but those awesome firefighters put is out in time and saved many homes…They did a great job.
(FADS next weekend :) )

Sunday Afternoon River Tailor Sesh
Submitted by hunterdive on Sun, 2011-12-04 21:18hey there Gang,
I put decided to put the tinny in at Point Walter this afternoon, after my Saturday fishing plans were interupted by a garage sale that went a bit out of control. After all the reports of tailor around, and a week earlier having got a couple up towards Freo, I shot over to Matilda Bay and put out a chrome twisty on one rod and a small Impulse shallow diver I picked up from the bargin bin at Bluewater Melville.
In the next 2 and a bit hours I recon I landed over 40 tailor, mostly undersize or just size and lost a lot close to the boat, it was manic. I had most hookup on the diver, but the chromy still got a few. It was great fun on the bream gear. I didn't see any bird action that others have mentioned, but the most productive area for me was from about the Royal Flying Squadron yacht club around to opposite Point Walter before it gets shallow right over on the northern side. That said, I still got fish right in front of the old Swan Brewery and Matilda Bay areas. I would be good to consistently get the larger ones some how, I tried a few different size lures bit still lots of choppers.
So in all, a great fun solo session, there was plenty of other out there doing it too, probably a few FW members. I saw Dan's new Contender fly past me and maybe a few other boats I recognised, Ryan C's Trailcaft with Verado with engine cover maybe?? Get out there guys, they are thick.

River Submarine
Submitted by Graeme76 on Sun, 2011-12-04 17:15Went for a fish down around Stirling Bridge in the early hours of this morning. Picked up 4 Flathead around 30-40cm, 7 choppers & a heap of Tarwhine. I also threw a whole squid & scaley out on my heavyish beach gear. At about 2am I hooked up to something on the heavy gear that emptied my spool of 280m of line (25lb leader 30lb main) in about one minute flat. I had the drag done up as tight as I dared & this thing peeled line off like I had the reel in free spool. Once the spool was empty the leader popped & I was left rather stunned to reel in my main line. Wasn't a Mulloway as I've stopped them up to 19kg on this gear with ease & a shark would have bitten straight through my mono trace. Don't know what it was, maybe a dolphin managed to snag itself while it was swimming past or something but whatever it was it game me a hell of a rush while it lasted. Before anyone says it, there were no boats going past me anywhere near the time of the hookup.

Swan Choppers
Submitted by nickyau2 on Sun, 2011-12-04 14:06Got out a couple of times in the last few days in the Claremont area chasing choppers... got 5 keepers last night when the run went hot. Three of them would have pushed 35+ which was a big surprise for river choppers, plenty of 20cm little tackers. Also saw a big flock of birds working just out of point walter... if you've got a boat get out there!!!! saw plenty of people trolling no where near that school but they were still getting fish.

Forget the mussels, where are the tailor and herring?
Submitted by BigDunc on Sun, 2011-12-04 14:01My young bloke Bill, 5, is busting to catch something on his line. The first dad and lad session last summer to Guildford, his first cast, a giant blue swimmer crab. Next cast a 44cm black bream. Dad and uncle got zero between them for the day and bless the boy, each time we see uncle, nearly a year later he still says "Remember that fish I caught and you got none?" He's been a bit traumatised because last time we fished there bout a month ago he caught a large long necked tortoise, we got the hook out but he's not keen on dad performing amatuer dentistry on another squirming, croaking reptile.
Where can we chase herring or even tailor in the metro area? Haven't got a tinnie yet but it's on the cards for Xmas. Any help would be awesome.
Thanks, Bill and Dunc.

Rotto Cray report no 3
Submitted by terboz123 on Sat, 2011-12-03 16:53Headed to rotto today. Lost another pot and found it some what 400m from where i marked it in my GPS. Pretty frustrating...so it came in and just left two pots out that havnt seemed to be touched in a nice quiet bay.
All in all two pulls resulted in 21 crays, 4 keepers the rest burried or tar spots. Got some real nice jumbos pitty they all had eggs, best pot was 13 in one.Alot of the tar spottted crays were patchy not the normal big black mark if you get what i mean, mind you they all went back in the drink regardless. No whites yet. Guess with the numbers increasing per pot they could possibly be starting to walk, So the missus pots are in and will get swapped for wooden ones with metal bases, over the plastic or it just might be where i place them, as there are alot of cray pots around and i guess they just get pulled till people get their quota.
Nice day on the water it was red hot at one stage!

My Dream !!! My 10KG Toman !! My Birthday Gifts !! By BKKGUY
Submitted by bkkguy on Fri, 2011-12-02 22:06What the biggest birthday gift for me for this year???
To land another monster size toman - A massive N whoppy 10KG , barely 2 DAYS after my birthday.
The feelings N the excitement that day simply hard to describe......awesome fights...:)
I was there with my Netherland angler, he has a few missed on the big toman N MAMA toman too.
But that wild fishing, you just dunno when the next big one is going to hit....

But that wild fishing, you just dunno when the next big one is going to hit....
I've landed many MAMA tomans N those singles averg size 5-6KG.
The last time I hit on a 11.5Kg (on land base), that was 1 year ago..
This catch was different from that 11.5KG catch because when you fought the big monster toman on a boat.
The difficulty level of the fights was more challenging N unexpected.
You don't know when the monster toman will make the next dive under the boat.
By record, those singles toman are much stronger N heavier than those MAMA toman.
The MAMA tomans always have to keep looking after her baby fry thus doesn't feed well during these the fry period.
Unlike the singles toman which constantly looking for her next meal.
Fat N strong fights , that what I can say about those singles toman fishes..:)
The minute the monster toman hit my buzz bait lure, it made an attempted to dive towards the nearest bushes.
Luckily I'm using a strong braided line- Varivas.
This type of PE line can withstand the hash abrasion caused by the main line rubbing against the thick bushes.
Due to the nature of the wild toman fishing , I always inform my coming anglers to use a higher PE braided line.
You can never tell where you gonna get a strike from the monster toman.
Can be anywhere !!!! Just remember that no every toman hookup happen in the open and free from underwater obstacle.
Be my guests and share together with me the happy moment for that day.

West Cape Howe NP
Submitted by cuthbad on Fri, 2011-12-02 13:04This time each year me and a few mates have a trip to celebrate a couple of birthdays and the start of summer. Only had a few days this time so went south instead of the long drive north. While it isnt exactly a fishing trip, when they ask me if I'm bringing the fishing gear all I can do is laugh. I hadnt been to the cape range park before so I wasnt sure what to expect and since I broke my foot a couple of months ago rock fishing was out so limited to the beach. I know shelleys isnt the most productive spot in the area but you gotta admit its bloody beautiful!
Spent the first morning chasing bait and stocked up on herring, luckily my mates missus came down to help since as you know the girls always catch more fish. Was a great morning, nothing clears a hangover like a quick fish and a swim!
After a day on the beach we grabbed the gear and headed down for an evenings fishing. I carried the fishing gear, everyone else carried the drinks, beach tents, stereo etc..... it was clear where our priorities were....
After about an hour I was losing confidence, and the first fish didnt help.....
Next fish had a bit more weight to it... but quickly turned out to be a ray. handed the rod over to my mates missus and after a bit of help setting the drag she was on her own. Eventually, after a bit of a workout landed a small eagle ray.
That was it for the night as everyone was hungry and we ran out of beers.... the next morning I sneaked down to the beach and got a bait out while the others where cooking breakfast. 20 mins later had a banjo shark/fiddler ray on the sand. Nothing great but good fun for a quick morning fish.
I just wanna mention that while a couple of us were camping, my mate and his girlfriend were doing it in class with a bloody big camper van. That arvo I was told enough fishing, come n play poker n have some drinks. We managed to reach a compromise where the back of the van was opened up so I could leave a rod out the back and fish while we played.
Eventually the mullet I had out as bait got hit, I jumped out of the van and landed the small hammer head. If I had been more geared up (and more sober) it would have made a great swim bait cuz im sure there were bigger sharks out there that would have smashed it. But I didnt, so he went back.
So the fishing wasnt red hot, but what a beautiful spot and a great way to relax for a few days with some good mates. I'll be back again to have a more serious shot at fishing there hopefully when I have my 4x4 to make the most of the beaches in the area.
Cheers

tailor trolling
Submitted by Timmo on Fri, 2011-12-02 11:52went trolling for tailor in the swan with a spot of crabbing on the side. Got a few small blueys and a burried female but all on the small side so no keepers!
Trolled alongside point walter following the birds and picked up some solid tailor all above the 30cm range on the Halco Laser pro 120 and my brother using a chrome twisty. The dolphins moved in and the birds and tailor scattered. We then moved upriver a bit and found more birds diving. Then it was on like donkey kong catching tailor after tailor! My brother caught more albeit smaller ones on the chromy and whilst he was pulling in his fish my lure was just sitting in the water and getting hit! We ended up getting our bag limit for a good feed on the BBQ with family and mates! The twisty was catching more whilst the halco was accounting for the bigger specimens with the biggest going 40cm. Also not one was undersize and all were nice, fat and healthy!
Excellent fun with my brother catching his first fish on lure.

Point Walter Black (Silver?!) Bream
Submitted by BlowieMasta on Thu, 2011-12-01 23:38Hey Guys,
Was out at Pt Wally's last week looking for some flatties... didn't manage any amongst all the weed, but did manage a few of these bream.
From the shape I'm pretty sure they are black bream, but was suprised at how silver they were! Maybe because they are on the sand flats? Or am I just going crazy and this is a tarwhine? Didn't think the nose was rounded enough to be silver bream...
Lemme know what you think.

Wednesday Crays
Submitted by tiimmbo on Wed, 2011-11-30 17:05Hit the water at 7 to a howling easterly but soldiered on to the back edge of the FFB to be greeted with some great viz and few tasty roaches.
Viz in shallower to Garden Island was crap, 5m at most, but still a few crays about in close as well.
