2013 Salmon report Yagerup

We drove from Perth to Yagerup beach near Pemberton on Saturday, and arrived at 2;30pm. we did a lap of the beach to suss out spots and gutters, as well as gathering intelligence on other fisherman's rigs and catches. We settled for a likely looking gutter. I rigged up my Ugly Stick 12ft beach rod and Penn slammer 760 with 330m of 25lb green mono. tried on a gang/surf popper paternoster, put a mulie on and cast out. 4 casts later a few big bangs and I strike, I'm on! The salmon gave a good run parallel with the beach, I walked along following him. The penn reel was screaming, pump wind, pump wind, after a few runs in the shallows while we were trying to grab him and we got him to the safety of the beach. My first ever salmon.

We caught 2 big bull herring that day, and another 7 salmon on Sunday. The salmon fought hard on Sunday with aerial jumps and acrobatics resulting in some lost fish, but nonetheless Sunday morning was a hot session with 10 fish hooked, and 6 landed. The surf poppers were gold, 5 of 7 landed fish were caught on them, and only 2 on bait. We lost 7+ salmon due to the hooks bending, and in once case a big salmon bit straight through the gangs.

A while back on fish wrecked reeltime there was an article on homemade surf poppers so in MacGyver style I whipped some up with balsa wood shaped with my swiss army knife, some glue and nail polish, and a tail made of feathers. After the premade rig was bit through by a big salmon, I tied on the sad looking homemade surf popper, not expecting anything. But after a few minutes I was on. The homemade surf popper actually worked, and better still, unlike the cheap premade surf popper rigs, the hooks didn't bend.

You can just see it hanging out of the fish's mouth (the yellow thing). (FAIL, derpy eyes -_- Sun was shining strait in the face)

I was stoked four 4/5kg salmon and numerous long battles lost with bigger fish due to bent/straightened hooks, I will be back next year, with better quality hooks, more surf poppers and a longer weekend. :)

ammo jetty

Heading there tonight, thinking of doing some ballooning, what bait/tackle would I need?

Leeman trip

Heading up to leeman this weekend was wondering if any one know any cheap accom, normally we sleep on beach in tent but thinking its gonna be a bit cold for that this weekend , any tips or anyone got a spare room or yard we can set up tent

Rubbish on beaches

The amount of rubbish being left behind on beaches is just getting out of hand.  Who are these morons who think it;s acceptable to leave shit everywhere. No reasonable person can accept that leaving stubbies and fishing line on the beach is Ok. I figure these are the same crew who reckon it;s a great idea to cut sick in the sand dunes too.......Sooooooo does anyone have any better soloutions to beach litter than my current method of picking up other peoples rubbish and taking it home. Perhaps if you have been fined for littering the persons involved could be banned from the beach for 12 months. Your vehical license and details could be put into a data base for rangers to monitor.

Open season on scum who trash our beach environment

boat fishing out from point billie / lefroy bay

Heading up to lefroy - point billie on the 13th of may in a 5.8m ally boat, it will be my first boat trip to the area and just after a little advise on a general area to start looking for some good bottom bouncing grounds to play with some decent demersals, not after anyones GPS spots, but some general areas to start looking?? Any advice would by much appreciated!!

Cheers, Matt

Today and upcoming

Well after 5 years of just an annual "see if it still works" run, the tinny finally got into some salt water when wife, kids and I went for a fish out of woodmans point.

Firstly we headed south to the cliffs for a drift for a squid, and first cast, while trying to settle the brown dog, we got a small squid. That was where the fishing success ended, but we drifted around for another hour, trawled along the cliffs then headed to the actual woodmans point for another drift without luck.

Overall a very enjoyable morning on the water. The motor didn't miss a beat which was really pleasing.

Next up is a week in Yallingup after a week at work. Have everything I need for salmon, apart from ability, then Exmouth for a week in July (was up there for a week in 2005, spent $300 at the local blue water and didn't catch a thing hence my comment about ability).

I will report in from down south if anything interesting happens, fishing wise :-p

don't know how to add pictures to a post

but this is worth its own thread

best spinning rod to take to steep point?

hey gusys, i was just wondering if there was any advise on spin outfits to take up to steep point. im heading up thursday week and so far have just bought a new setup, saltiga 6500 loaded with castman 110lbs braid a bit over kill  i know but got it matched with a asuza 802 pe5-8 and a t-curve 802 stickbait rod. i was after a bit lighter aswell to match a stradic 6000 just to flick a few lighter lures up to about 80g. any advise would be much appreciated. cheers

Rod Advice

I just bought a new Penn Prevail beach rod. I have taken it home and when I put it together i can't get the male ferrule to completely insert so the joint is flush. The male ferrule is about 100mm long and when I try and join it there is still about 15mm that won't insert itself. I have tried parrafin to lubricate but to no avail.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Jurien bay late May help

 Guys,

I have secured a week off in late may and have family coming from east, taking them camping at Jurien and taking the boat. After some help with where to go to get some baldies snapper or maybe a dhuie. Boat is 18.6 so quite comfortable traveling 20 kms. Not after secret honey holes but some help would be great. Was also going to drag a lure around but I guess Id be a bit late for makies that time of year?

Thanks again guys.

Grey Nurse at Wagoe

Just got back from Wagoe. The sea was flat all week but no easterlies for ballooning so we had to settle for a lot of reef fish and plenty of lost rigs. I put out a live bait on a slide (hoping for a big Mulloway) from one of the gaps in the reef and ended up getting bitten off after about 15 minutes. I tried again with a whole tailor on a slide the next day from a different spot about 500m down the beach and managed to land this shark. Amazing it still had my hook from the previous day in it's mouth

Best Tough Beech Spin Reel

Now we all know A Stella or Saltiga is tops for spins, but I would loathe to take one on to the beach with all that sand etc.

Just wondering price no issue with the best toughest spin reel would be for the beech.

Considering what the yanks do with their Tailor (bluefish) fishing using Van  Staal's whether that would be up there.

Cheers

Big deep sea squid (perth canyon)

Hey guys.

was just flicking through youtbe, when i came across a recent wa fiheries video. it has some awesome footage of some deep water species, ie gray-band, red snapper, gem fish and many more between the 100m and 500m mark.

one shot in particular caught my attention when a huge squid comes upto the camera and sprays inc everywhere got a clear view of the size of it. just wondered has anyone caught one of these before, closely resembles the humbolt squid of western america???

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d27m1ECzxA

the footage is around the 6:17 mark

thanks

Harry

Lenoxx fishing camera? Are they useful?

Has anyone ever used a lenoxx fishing camera to look at the ground that they are fishing?  Just wanted to see what other users experences with them have been.

Rod and tackle box trolley - any ideas?

Being fully landbased, I have to treck a fair way to get to some of my spots and carrying three rods, tackle box and bait is difficult when i am by myself so I was wondering if any of you have made your own trolley or cart that has a few rod holders and stuff on it to make carrying all pf your gear to your favourite fishing spot a little easier? This is sort of what I want, but i am on a tight budget so some cheap ideas to make something similar to this would be good. Cheers.

The Yellowfin Jiggle!

Sandy Point, Warroora Station

Did the annual trip to Warroora Station this year and decided to stay at Sandy Point where as in previous years we've stayed at 'The Lagoon'.

http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y389/warroora/Worrara093_zpsee9ee412.jpg

Sandy Point was the choice because it's easier on our aging bodies to be able to launch the boats and have them safely moored inside the reef where as The Lagoon means launching at Sandy Point and driving 20 odd km down the coast and mooring without the protection of a reef.

Camp Warroora.

Sandy Point has a bid of a head case caretaker in Stewie who can 1st scare you when you meet him in is Budgie Smugglers minus a toe but cheers to him he went out of his way to make sure the tracks in were graded so we wouldn't get bogged,... even if it was all hours of the night he decided to do it.

His pet goat was another story though!

As in previous years we had shirts made for the occasion, this time from a supplier in Busselton who did a great job.

Every Thursday we made the short trek to the Coral Bay Pub for 'Locals' night where the person who has made the most F*%k ups for the week had to wear a special pink shirt and carry a pink Bunny all night.

I think Graham kissed every girl in the pub that night!

Can't beat the YFT Gucci Bag! Think I'll have to patent that one!

http://i1272.photobucket.com/albums/y389/warroora/20130403_182057_zpsb250796d.jpg

All in all this years trip was at the start of April where previous trips have been in the middle of May, so the fishing wasn't as good as the past and locals put this down to a major coral spawn that had just happened. Even so, we did manage a few good fish.
