HDS 8 Gen 2 as fuel gauge

Does anyone use a Lowrance HDS Gen 2 as a fuel gauge.

I have an HDS 8 Gen 2 and a Suzuki DF 250 which came with a Garmin multifunction device which worked great until recently. It now takes up to an hour or 2 to turn on which means it isn't calculating fuel used all the time, so I intend to start using the HDS as an engine multi function gauge. Wondering if anyone has done this and if so, what level of accuracy they have experienced after 2 or 3 calibrations

Cheers

Eric

Any SBT reports?

Heading out tomorrow, does anyone have any reports of southern blues SOR, particularly out of rocko or woodies? Hoping to hear of anything between ffb and the 40s.

Cheers

Crayfish Biting

Has anyone else ever been bitten by a crayfish before? I have been rayfishing longer than I can remember diving and pots and when measuring a crayfish a couple of days ago had 1 latch onto my gloved finger, it had such a good bite could not pull or shake it off, dipped it into ice slurry and it let go.

I should listen to my own advice from safety days on hand safety when I used to say never put your finger where you wouldn,t put your d##k

Augusta today

 Hi All

Heading to Augusta today for 6 days. Taking my 4.2 Savage with me. Have checked the forecast and looks like we will get at least a couple of days of light winds.

Is there any reasonable demersal fishing within about 5 mm or so of the coast?

I'm guessing there is plenty of kgs and bread and butter fish in close?

Thanks in advance.

2018 was a great year for me

2018 was a great year for me, here is a quick edit of a few of the highlights from the past year. Have a merry xmas and a safe and happy new year

Big thanks Sea rescue

Had a big weekend on the water, great weather , just want to thank Whitfords Sea rescue for the tow yesterday from 30 km off 2 rocks , left the ramp before 4am heading out to the bank with my mate Eric, lots of excitement with awsome water and our first demersal bash for a couple of months , 30 km out and all of a sudden my engine just cut out , just had its 200 major service, well slightly stressed I called up Sea rescue and told them our problem, no worries they said we are on our way, looked at my mate and said we may as well drop the lines, barren ground on the sounder, nothing happened for about 10 minutes , all of a sudden my rod loaded up and I had a great battle with a nice 10 kg Dhu, well after that we had the best hour of fishing ever, got bricked by some monsters, bagged out on great baldies, just as we got our last fish our tow turned up,back at the ramp by 9.00am. Just shows how lmportant it is to log on and have all the safety gear , good radio very important, merry Xmas Sea rescue and fellow fishos .

Palagics catches

1st time doing An actual fishing report

Ended up going out for a long day on the boat yesterday perfect conditions so wethought we would make our way over to the Fads didn't quite make it there but seen a few bird bust ups on the way so we quickly hooked up the lures and the bang we where on.

4 tuna later and tried for a bottom bash and came up with just an eel what a stupid thing they are.

Was a good day over all

Bridgetown Pemberton Redfin Trout

Hey guys,

Gonna be heading down to Bridgetown this festive season for a few days, and wondering if anyone is down there now getting some lines wet who would know if any reddies or trout are on the bite? Looking to do fishing mostly around Pemberton at Big Brook Dam, Rooney's Bridge, and if i can get away from the missus for long enough, down Heart Break Trail. Also closer to Bridgetown I'll hit the Donnelly River aswell.

Got some HB minnows, Spinners and SP to try out, so hoping something will land on my plate for dinner!

Cheers for any help!

Fishing Canarvon creek advice

Hi FW, can anyone point me in the right direction of fishing Canarvon river system? Will be travelling through there for a pit stop quite regularly. Not looking for secret spots just a general idea? Will have light spin and lures. Will be landbase just catch and releasing. Cheers

Tranducer cable with plug

Hi . I have bought my neighbors boat which I used to go out fishing in . He is now fishing up above . The person who was looking after it has taken out the fish finder that was with it . Also he replaced the Lowrance elite 5 HDI with a Furuno fcv-582l . I have checked the internet but can find no details . The transducer cable is a Airmar C172 S2002 . I am probably correct in saying he has replaced the original cable that was connected up to the Lowrance . The plugs no doubt are different to my understanding . Picking up the original sounder on weekend should I also make sure I get the original cable as well . No Idea if the tranducer was swaped out as well hope not .
Any help on this would be great .
Cant wait to get back on the water .

Still large breeding aggregations in Sound

Some large schools still around right up on the surface ......many are real horses !

Wreckless Pro Crayfisherman

Good things have been said in a previous post about a Pro Crayfisherman but unfortunately this wasn't the case yesterday.

Myself and 2 mates were pulling our pots south of the Northern leads from Ocean Reef when a Pro boat came steaming through about 40 to 50 sets of floats at the back of the 3 mile. He could have totally avoided this by travelling a few hundred metres further west, but he chose to steam right through the many Rec pots in this location. I would be surprised if he didn't cut any ropes !

Should this be reported to fisheries at all ?

Cheers

Eric

Geo Bay Moorings

Does anyone know who I contact regarding the various moorings around Dunsborough to see if I can get my hands on one in mid Jan if I get a few nice days in a row? I’ve tried googling it and checked out the DBYC website but can’t find anything.

Cheers

Cray pot tipper advice

hey guys,

ive got a tipper and can never get the pot to get to pivot point without a struggle and hoping someone has a pointer on how to better set it up.

The tipper has a roller full width so bridle not choking. The winch is level to roller. I tried adjusting the roller higher but just makes the tipper flip over when winching.

Once the pot gets to half above water level the rope slips on the winch even with 2 wraps and full tension. Pots are usual 3/4 timber with 2 extra plates in

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Pot found hillarys

My diver found a pot with its rope cut while freeing one of mine today.

if you are missing one in 18 m nw of hillaries , pm me

it may drifted as was standing on its end ie lack of weight

Is a High thrust motor a substitute for HP?

I have noticed a trend at boat yards to put what I think are underpowered (HP wise) high thrust motors on boat packages to keep the cost down.

The answer from the salesman is always, it spins a bigger prop its all good.

Is there any truth to this logic?

Softbaits are the only thing being eaten

The fishing has been tough for me lately but the one thing that always seems to catch good fish is softbaits, curly tails in particular.

science/2018-12-14/even-fish-get-the-bends,-and-they-get-it-worse-than-humans

good article here in the west ,

worth a read as a reminder on dhuie survival and potential mortality rates when people keep on demersal fishing and releasing them thinking its all ok ...

You would't urinate on them if they were on fire

Has anybody had a look at the discrepancy between the predicted wind forecast for falcon and the actual wind speed for Saturday and Sunday on willy weather.

What a joke, with all the money spent on satellites put into space to better predict how the weather is going to be this is the best that they can come up with, I got a far and away better prediction from my dear old mums beetle kept in a match box
Good people rely on these forecast to plan safe travel be it by boat plane or car and this is the best that they can come up with and BOM are in the same (excuse the pun) boat with them.

Computers and such I'd like to know just how much the government spend on these things to do their modelling for them what ever it is it's to much.

Can anyone tell me of a site that is reasonably reliable at predicting weather for the WA coast.

Monties 2019

Gday Folks,

Getting to the time of year when im planning my 2019 trips........ The monties has been on my radar for sometime now and i think its time to get out there and check it out so this post is to gather some more info from people that have done the trip in their tralier boat in the past. Im NOT after fishing spots im after info that will make my trip out there go smoothly. kinda after the tips that your learned along the way ie good camping spots with the different winds and tides.

Anchoring /mooring and any other general information you may have, fortescue is the cloest place for the shortest run out i figure?

Ive done a good few trips in the crusher so have my range worked out pretty good and always use the rule of thirds so i  can carry enough fuel and water no problems and am quite happy with the boat and all that sorta stuff.

Any info or stories will be much appreciated  in helping me decide on the best time to go and from where.

Love my top water fishing  so the trip will be based around that with some jigging chucked in aswell as diving and general relaxing .

Cherrs in advance

Rob
