Squid Jags

I went squidding on Thursday in Cockburn and used both Jigs and Jags.

We didn't do too badly ending up with about 15 squid.

I think we could have done much better on the jags if they had been finer, sharper and maybe had barbs.

When using Jags, the float would frequently dissapear under water but as soon as we put pressure on the line, we would feel weight and then the squid would drop off. We only actually landed 2 on Jags, but had at leat 10 hits on the Jags.

On getting home, I checked through my tackle and found these Owner SQ06 jags and I think they would work great and I would like to try buy some more. Does anyone know if these are stocked in Perth ?. Picture attached

Fitting pot tipper

I have a 595 Cruise Craft that I want to prepare for the fitting of a pot tipper.  Before I start cutting holes in the gunwhale, do any other Cruise Craft owners or knowledgable members know if I will need to reinforce the gunwhale at the point where the holes are cut for the vertical rod holders?

Thanks in advance.

www.perthnow.com.au/news/perth/missing-fisherman-case-for-coronial-inquiry-in-perth-ng-b88661227z

With this Inquiry now on , a with that recent accident and very, very lucky rescue surrounding the lone crayfisherman overboard with leg tangle on rope, just putting it out there,

lone fishing can be  a quiet , me time exercise , or it can go pear shaped very quickly, as seen in the last few years.

Be safe , and take a mate.( if you can)........................... hey that sorta rymes.

exmouth weather suggestions

HI guys.

I am hoping to plan a fishing trip up to Exmouth next year, will be my first time towing a boat up ( hopefully the start of a yearly migration!!). I am pretty flexible with dates, so was hoping to get your opinions on the best month to head up.
I was thinking early may ( to avoid school holidays etc) and will probably be staying up for 8 or 9 nights.
Any comments on what the wind/swell Is usually like this time of year? I have heard it can still be a pretty windy time of year. I am only in a 5.39 aluminium so hoping to avoid rough weather.

Also in the past have always just driven up over 1 day, but now that have the boat will likely stop and sleep somewhere overnight. any suggestions on stops that can accommodate a boat/trailer etc?

Any info greatly appreciated!

cheers!

100% Tuna Sludge available at Shore Catch!

We currently have 100% tuna oil sludge (available in 5L buckets) at our Wangara shop front.

The sludge is a premium product and a little bit goes a long way, evident by the awesome oil slick it produces in our fish based burley logs.

If you are making up buckets of burley to spoon into the water or freezing up your own blocks, this sludge is almost guaranteed to send the fish into a frenzy.

Limited availability so make sure you get in quick.

Land Based YTK

Hey All, As the weather is improving ive been thinking of targeting A landbased YTK, Ive always wanted to catch a Kingy but never really known how all i know is that live squid is good bait.

But I would like to target them on a lure! So if you know any good lures please let me know and how to approach catching them. And what are some good SOR spots? Ive heard you can get them in the swan.

Thanks Alex!!

XL Garfish Season Finished

We have been attending the AJ Langford Fish Market at Canning Vale, to buy the big garfish for the upcoming mid-west ballooning season.

We bought some really nice fish at auction over the past few months, but the market floor supply of XL garfish has now dwindled to the point that we haven’t seen a decent lug for a few weeks.

We have current availability of 1kg vacuum sealed packs at 4 fish per kilo.  As they are vacuum sealed in thick bags, the freezer life is a year or more if you want to keep them in storage.

The availability of very large garfish is a seasonal thing and if you want these baits for an upcoming trip, now is the time.  We have just ceased wholesale supply of the fish to tackle shops and they are only available from the Shore Catch premises in Wangara, while stocks last.

Lancelin during the ban

Heading to to Lancelin this weekend and the weather is looking to good to not take the boat. I know the demersal fishing is great up therebut has anyone got any advice on what to target to the while the ban is on?

Two Rockingham men fined $25,000- Crayfish Offences:

Rockingham: two men fined more than $25,000 for taking lobsters

TWO men have been fined more than $25,000 between them after causing a big loss to a second generation commercial rock lobster fisher’s livelihood.

Keith Bernard Knowler and Sydney James Knowler appeared at Rockingham Magistrates Court today for sentencing after Keith Knowler’s son Jason Knowler was fined $10,000, at Rockingham Magistrates Court on October 9 for related offences.

Keith Knowler pleaded guilty to eight interference with fishing gear charges and one charge of being in possession of more than the bag limit for rock lobsters.

Sydney Knowler pleaded guilty to a charge of having rock lobster in excess of the bag limit.

The Fisheries Prosecutor said the offences happened during an nine-day period from December 12-21, 2016.

In that time, Keith Knowler found the commercial fisher’s pots near Coventry Reef, off Safety Bay-Shoalwater.

He pulled them in, removed their ID floats marked M8 and then attached his own ID floats marked KK0250.

On December 14, Keith and Jason removed an unknown number of crayfish from the stolen pots and placed more of their own floats on more pots.

A few days later, Keith and Sydney pulled the stolen pots, taking 34 lobsters.

On December 21, Keith and Sydney Knowler were arrested by Fisheries officers at the Bent Street Boat Ramp when they returned from fishing.

Fisheries questioned them and found they had a lobster crawling around in the front of their boat and 16 secreted away in a floor compartment under a carpet mat.

At later interviews with Fisheries, Keith Knowler admitted to stealing the pots and crayfish with his son Jason on December 14, along with committing similar offences with Sydney Knowler.

Their lawyer said the facts were accepted.

He said both men were on service pensions and were former Vietnam veterans.

“Keith has been a recreational fisher for three years and he co-owned a boat with his son, Jason,” he said.

“He has never done this before and certainly not involved in a commercial sense by selling the lobster.

“When they went out the son changed the floats.

“The reason was Christmas was approaching and he had lost pots himself.

“He would give the crayfish to the RSL each year.

“He did it as a hobby.

“They are both on service pensions. These two men served their country with distinction”

He asked for minimum penalties.

The prosecutor said the maximum penalties for the offences were $25,000 for each interference charge or 12 months prison.

He said the offences were serious and fish resources for future generations needed protection.

“It’s an offence of dishonesty depriving one fisher of his livelihood,” he said.

“The fisher is a second generation commercial fisherman operating out of Mandurah.

“Co-operation and goodwill is needed among fishers as pots need to be set over night or a few days and offences like this lead to distrust and the offences themselves are difficult to detect and police.”

A victim impact statement from the commercial fisherman was handed to Magistrate Vivian Edwards.

Magistrate Edwards sentenced Keith first.

“The fisherman’s livelihood depends on how many he catches and this has had a significant impact on his livelihood,” she said.

“The offences were serious – you acted dishonestly – eight times over nine days.

“There is a need for general and specific deterrence.

“I note another offender Jason Knowler was fined $10,000 so I must take that into account for parity.”

She also took into account his ability to pay a fine and his prior good record.

“The totality of eight offences at the maximum is $225,000,” she said.

“The gravity and number of offences over nine days is significant.”

She imposed a global fine of $16,000 and the additional mandatory fine of $4500 for the excess lobster.

She made an order for forfeiture of the boat, lobster and related fishing gear and prohibited him from fishing for lobster for 12 months.

Sydney Knowler was fined the mandatory $4500 plus an additional $750.

“In my view your offending is certainly the lesser of the two,” she said.

“I am not satisfied that you would do this again so the prohibition order is declined.”

Trolling for mulloway

Has anyone had any luck trolling in the upper reaches of the swan for a mulloway? What lures do you think might get there attention ?

Flexible Water Tank / Bladder

Does anyone have any experience with fitting a flexible water tank / bladder to their boat as a fresh water tank? I'm thinking of adding one of these to the bow of the Reefie with a 5.5GPM/70PSI ebay wash-down pump as a wash-down/rinse off solution and scrapping my plans for a seawater deckwash. I currently just use a 10ltr bucket of seawater to flood/wash off any deck blood etc and it seems to work pretty well without the seawater pressure pump reliability issues.

www.boathardware.com.au/flexible-water-tank-55l-triangular

How well do these work/last? Can you use the full capacity of the tank once the air has been bleed out of it? Any durability issues? (Would be installed on some carpet or rubber mats)

Hints and tips of reef fishing whilst drifting

So I've recently joined a local reef fishing club and whilst the guys are great fun, the way they operate has me out of my fishing comfort zone. Basically these guys head out to the reef and use handlines in depths usually around the 40m and hop around to different marks and drift. Now I'm definitely more of a rod and reel kind of guy and mainly looking to be a bit more active in my fishing rather than just put a bit of bait on throw it over the railing.

But I don't quite know what kind of set up to use that works with the drifting that these guys do? They also have a strict no braid policy so that's really got me wondering what to use on my set up. I currently have a 1.65m jigging rod paired with a Spinfisher 9500 thats loaded with standard mono. I'm thinking of get a complete new setup as the reel is just wayyyyy too heavy to constantly work. Any suggestions as to what I should get? I'm thinking of using fluorocarbon main line to get the line to sink a bit?

I'm still a beginner fisho so wanted to try some lures but not sure what to get. I got one of those slow jigs (Shimano Lucanus 200g and Inchiku slow jig types) but I didn't really read up on how they're supposed to be used so didn't have any success last time I was out on the reef! Anyway any thoughts and tips to get me in the right direction would be great

Lures to Just Catch Fish

I'm fairly new to fishing as a whole and have always used bait until recently I decided to start trying lures. I've bought a few different kinds for different things such as some twistys for herring, silver hard metal and white soft plastic for salmon, a few others for other particular ones and made some by embedding hooks inside some soft plastics that didn't have any. However I still haven't caught any fish on a lure yet at all (I'm moving it about trying to imitate prawns and distressed fish, not just winding in). I know there is no definitive answer particularly, but if I was to get a lure that I could just walk out to a jetty over the ocean, throw in and catch a fish (herring, silver bream, butterfish, anything), would anybody have any suggestions? Attached is also my collection so far of lures in case I have any in there that should definitely be catching fish but I just don't know how to use.

Thanks

James
