Fish species reference
Submitted by Perfish on Thu, 2013-06-06 15:06Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good, complete fish species reference book. I have a couple already but have found that they are missing some of the species I've been catching (and in some cases unsuccessfully targeting).
Cheers in anticipation!

probably a silly question.. but..
Submitted by Norty on Thu, 2013-06-06 04:17Hi guys and gals,
This is probably a silly question but
do squid live in the river? I know they're saltwater creatures
but with the flow of the ocean thru freo harbour just wondered if they go as far as
leeuwin boat ramp or maybe east st jetty..
Thanks

How much are you ok spending on a lure?
Submitted by beachsoul on Thu, 2013-06-06 02:36My son with a nice Tailor (Released to grow a bit)
Ive been looking at some of the stickbait options available and I know they will suit the style of fishing I enjoy but at $25 - $30 a go im balking at the price......I know that one good fish to me I will feel like it was money well spent but that sinking feeling would still be there if a fish did me on one of the gurgling reef ledges that I love to haunt. Yes it would hurt.....worse still would be the old bust off casting!
I think im going to splurge tommoz and see how some of them work........the satisfaction of watching a BIG Tailor swipe one off the surface will be worth it......

Buying a new rod and reel, Could use some options
Submitted by PattoMelon on Thu, 2013-06-06 00:24Evening Gents,
As the title says, Im looking to buy a new Rod and Reel on friday.
I know VERY LITTLE about a good quality set up and all that junk, I currently use that 8foot 2 piece hunk of crap.
Im getting sick of having to haul around a 2 piece, Because i need to break it down to fit in my car. Dealing with tangled line next time i head out.
All that kind of crap.
I could use some opinions on simple 1 piece, with the capability to fish off Jettie's and estuarys. Everything other then off a boat.
Cheers :3
Patto.

Tailor stickbait from June/July WAngler
Submitted by reel_scientist on Wed, 2013-06-05 20:32Has anyone positively ID'd the stickbait mentioned on pages 66-69 of the current WAngler? I've got two possibilities but one doesn’t look quite right and the other doesn’t seem to be available in Aus. It doesn’t help that I'm not sure if the 'clue' has a typo or not.
I would love to know what it is so I can pick one up before I head off fishing. If it's a closely guarded secret but your happy to share please PM me! my lips will be sealed.
Thanks in advance

the power of social media
Submitted by petermac on Wed, 2013-06-05 18:12after i took delivery of my new boat just over a week ago i had gripe on this site about the wiring ripping out of the center console when i tilted it down. well i will give credit where credit's due the supplier of the boat fixed the wiring problem pronto. since then i have been able to go over the boat pretty closely and was dissapointed to find weld spatter and weld burn marks on the hull and droplet marks on the transom where some type of chemical has been dripped on it. i dont think i am being fussy but i just thought the standard of finish wasnt good enough, so what I did is I left negative feed back on the manufacturers facebook site. i have now had 3 phone calls from eastern states from them and they are sending a rep to look at the boat tomorrow morning. The power of social media is all powerful but use it carefuly

Changing trebbles to singles on lures
Submitted by EKUL on Wed, 2013-06-05 14:26Hey Guys,
Looking at changing all my trebbles to single hooks (with split rings) could anybody reccomend what type of hooks you would use for this?
Have had a quick look at local tackle shop and asked the worker there for a bit of advice - but had no idea.
Any advice would be great.

How to catch King George Whiting and not Wrasse
Submitted by Philthy on Wed, 2013-06-05 10:16I've been getting out on some prime looking KGW ground anywhere from Fremantle right up to Jurien Bay and have been struggling to get anything but bloody wrasse. I was wondering if anybody had any tricks up their sleeves on avoiding these buggers.
I've still managed to get my feed of KGW, but i prolly catch 1 whiting for every 10-20 wrasse...

Advice on Offshore weather conditions and boating
Submitted by dant on Wed, 2013-06-05 09:11Gday All,
Thought i would open up a thread to help us new boaties deal with offshore weather conditions, and how best to handle many different situations that the weather/ocean puts on for us.
I would be greatful if the experience boaties could share some experiences on some scnenarios that they have encountered and how they handled the situation ie, heavy following sea, slow down or power through?
Im still learning the conditions at the moment - but after the wk end in Jurien it opened up my eyes a bit as to how the forecast may be not quite what you think.
Thanks All

Land based in Coral Bay
Submitted by exmouthmarlin on Wed, 2013-06-05 08:09Hi
I will be in Coral Bay in late June for a week holiday with the family. I normally have my boat with me but this time we are caravanning. Therefore, I will only be fishing from the shore. Could anybody tell me some good places to fish from the shore and what to expect.
Thanks

"Lure De Fridge"
Submitted by Robbo88 on Tue, 2013-06-04 16:20G'day All,
So that time of year has come around again..Exmouth for 10 days!!
We're leaving mandurah around 9am Thursday (bugger peak hour traffic) and planning to make it to the overnight rest stop at Lyndon river on Exmouth Rd. Other mob in convoy will stop in Carnarvon overnight. Friday we'll jump back on Rd first thing and hope to arrive in town by 9, unload and have boat launched by lunchtime haha. The rest of boys will be heading down from Karratha on the Saturday.
The weather up there looks like its on the mend so fingers that keeps up!
So my question is, will there be any other fellow fishwrecked crew in town at the same time?? Always good to be able to catch up and meet other members for a beer and put a face to the name.
Cheers
Robbo

Any GIS users?
Submitted by WAter-baby on Tue, 2013-06-04 10:59 Greetings fishwrecked community,
I have been sitting in the background for a while enjoying all your fishy posts! so firstly i want to say thanks for all the eye candy
. Ofcourse now that i want something, i have decided to create an account!
I was curious to know if any of you rec-fishos out there are using GIS software as part of your tool-kit? i would like to know if anyone can point me in the direction of datasets related to our WA coast? i am sure they would exist out there somewhere... otherwise i know that there are digitzed marine charts getting around, has anyone tried to georeference them?
I am a keen fisho and i love WA with all my heart, i am still a GIS rookie but i see it as a powerful tool that has the potential to ad some serious value to the rec-fisho arsenal and the wider concept of rec-fishos as a tool for citizen science!
I look forward to getting to know some of you guys and would greatly appreciate any wisdom/shapefiles you might have

LED Strip Lighting
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Tue, 2013-06-04 09:02Guys just bought some 500mm LED strip lights and have started re-doing the wiring on my boat, not that there was anything wrong with it before except the fuel guage wasn't working which i found a loose wire. But now its all out, i'm adding the anchor light, cabin light, two extra speakers for the stezza, a new VHF radio and the strip lighting. Seems the boat has a loom fitted to include the extra lights to the switchboard but they arent connected.
Curious as to where others have placed their Strip Lights, under the side pockets or in them seems to be popular? Doesn anyone have any pics of them going or suggestions on where to put them?
