Stainless Steel prop advice
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Wed, 2011-03-16 20:45Hi, I have a Mercury optimax 90hp with a 13 1/4 x 19 ali prop at the moment. It is quite sluggish out of the hole and wondering if I was to go to a Stainless prop 13 1/4 x 17, would it be better. At the moment I get aprox 28 knots at about 5200 rpm. Rev limit for this motor is 5700 rpm. While I am at it, has anyone looked into Apollo props.(they had a distributer at the Freo boat show, Techno Fibre in Bibra Lake. (www.tailfinmarine.com) Also if anyone has a prop of the above specs and fits a mercury motor and you want to sell, let me know. Cheers.

Recreational Fishers under Siege Southwest Zone
Submitted by Howard George on Wed, 2011-03-16 13:51Everyones probably aware that the Busselton Shire Council has decided to ban fishing on the very end of the Busselton Jetty, against the community's wishes and Geographe Bay along with the Cape to Capes region has been singled out to be made into a Marine Park with sanctuary zones.
The Federal Government has given an indication that a decision will be made towards the end of March in Commonwealth waters. now some readers might think so whats it got to do with me if I don't fish in that area. Well you need to realise that sanctuary zones concentrate fishing effort by both commercial and recreational fishers into a smaller area that just might be around your favorite fishing spot. Ask the guys down on the south coast who have noticed a decline in their fish stocks since Jon Ford closed off an area from Lancelin to Mandurah a couple of years ago to commercial fishermen.
Because I'm a passionate fisherman I'm quite prepared to travel to wet a line and get a feed of fish anywhere in the State where the fish are biting and I'm sure you feel the same as I do and for that reason alone, without sufficient research being done to identify nurseries for the various fish species which in our zone hasn't been completed, the potential for a bad decision being made that has an adverse effect on our fish stocks is very real.
The Fisheries Department is well known for making stuff-ups like having two closures as an example, one for the commercial sector to protect the whiskery shark pups and later a closure for the recreational sector which is purely a catch closure in the West Coast Bio-region. In our area both sectors agree that the closures should be at the same time to give the fish a rest from being targeted by fishermen but as yet nothing from fisheries.
With the numbers we have within the recreational sector we can make the pollies sit up and take notice of our needs by having a united voice on issues. Once things become political Rec-fish West can't help us nor can the Fisheries Department and it entirely up to us through our fishing forums to get our opinions heard by Governments or else they suffer the consequences on polling day.
I would be interested to read your opinions on this subject.

Got a bit lazy and left my bait collecting a little late this year.

FIJI ONO Island 2011
Submitted by JohnF on Tue, 2011-03-15 22:06Well, a breif taste of our recent trip to ONO. Simply awsome week, here is but one of the 30 species caught by myself and fellow members DazSamfishing and SamC.
Sam is doing a mag article, so cant add too much and will let him select all the good photos first, but here is one of the photos of a nice fish that definately wont be making it on (thanks to some over zealous deckies bleeding the tuna before we got some photos and a stray arm complete with claret). Was one of the best tasting fish I have ever had!
Thanks fellas for a top week!

Exmouth Spangled Advice
Submitted by Happydaze on Tue, 2011-03-15 21:58
Getting set up for a trip away to exmouth in april , trying to keep the bases covered and intend to check out the action inside the reef in the tinny when the weather don't suit offshore options. Question is what are the best types of lures to target spangeled emperor in behind the reef, depth of water will vary on the day. What are people having the most success with?
have had plenty of success catching fish on baits over the years both from shore and in the tinny, but this time round would prefer to fore go the whole bait caper, I have the romantic vision of sight casting lures to plump snapper in the shallows
, any help would be appreciated

Lowrance HDS8
Submitted by gib77 on Tue, 2011-03-15 21:21Hey, anyone using a Lowrance HDS8 or similar, think theyve found the best settings for it.
I am running it on 200khz, sensitivity about 65-70%. I use a split screen, with half zoomed in so I can see the bottom better. Sonar seems to light up too much in 30-40m, and not light up enough in 60m+.
Anyone got any advise on distuishing colours, baitfish v decent fish
What about setting if using for trolling, I seem to always have noise on surface
Any comments would be greatly appreciated

LB REEL help
Submitted by ADAMANGLER on Tue, 2011-03-15 20:49hi guys, Im very new to over head reels. Being from a small country town in tasmania for the last 25 years, I didnt really have the need for such gismos. Im just wondering, I want to know what would be a good over head reel that I could spool with 80lb braid, has good casting abilities, and a strong smooth drag. Ill mainly be casting off the beach slide baiting, or ballooning for sharks or spaniards up north, I want about 500m line capacity also. Im thinking the TLD 30 but if anyone here has any better suggestions, please speak up? :-)

Need some help with tackle for Hamelin Bay this April
Submitted by rhys.s on Tue, 2011-03-15 16:50Hi guys I'm a long time reader first time post-er on here, the wealth of information is great!
I am heading down to Hamelin Bay at the start of April with some friends and will be shore fishing for the week. We have 4wd's to get up and around the place but I need some help with what gear to take down.
It seems the Salmon won't be on this year so what other species can I target from shore? I am hoping to pick up a few lures before we head down, what do you recommend?
My small collection of gear includes a beach rig and a light 7" rig.
Thanks in advance guys

Some of the smaller boats then returned to the marina to pull out and go launch elsewhere. Now i'm jealous, Bastards !!

300kg dolphin leaps onto boat
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2011-03-15 09:55Dolphins are renowned for leaping out of the water and putting on a show for tourists but one 300kg monster took things a little further in by jumping onto the deck of a charter boat and landing on a woman in Florida.
The passenger was treated for a sprained ankle and the dolphin gently put back in the water by wildlife officials, deputies and a team from the Isles of Capri Fire and Rescue Department.
This 15ft long dolphin stunned a group of day-trippers as it jumped up and flipped itself onto the deck of a boat on Sunday, suffering a small gash
These were the frantic scenes as the daytrippers tried to save the 300kg mammal and get it back into the water
Lt. Keith Perry said, ''When we pulled up, the boat was three quarters full with water and had the biggest dolphin I had ever seen.
'It was huge. It was a monster.'
The 24ft boat Cool Beans was following a group of dolphins on the Marco River when one apparently mistimed its jump, said Perry.
It took took 10 officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Collier County Sheriff's Office to get mammal back in the water.
Rescuers used a backboard to help get the bottlenose back into the water
Fortunately no one was seriously hurt and the dolphin made it back into the water with no injuries other than the small cuts
The team spent 20 minutes wrapping rope around the dolphin and then placing it on an immobilising board before releasing it.
Perry said: 'He wasn't doing anything to us. He wasn't moving. It was almost like he knew he was stuck and that he had to rely on us to get out.'
The eight people on board were excited about their close encounter with the friendly sea creature.

Banjo/fiddler shark
Submitted by knigit on Tue, 2011-03-15 09:21Caught two on Friday, one of which was quite big but I didn't know what they were so they went back in to steal my livebaits another day.
A quick look on the net gives very contrasting opinions about whether eating them is worth the effort of cleaning the little buggers. Anyone here tried them? One of my mates is cursing me for putting that much meat back in to the water.

Good Fishing session Yeww
Submitted by DhuBoi on Mon, 2011-03-14 22:03Well after a shitty couple of weeks back at university again and trying to get into the swing of another semester, I decided screw uni for the day, the weather was great and missing a few lectures was well worth getting out on the boat with the old man for a bit of a fish or a bit of a crab sesh.
After loading all the gear into the boat and getting down to the water at a lazy 10 am, the Easterly winds were around a 15- 20 knots and dying off/ With the ocean and swell flat as a tack we made the decision to head out wide, which resulted in a pretty interesting result as we found some very decent ground. After dropping our lines, I had a light line and a heavy line out which was placed in the rod holder, my light line set up started pulling drag and after winding up I could see the outline of a nice size king george whiting, only to have a large grey shadow come out of nowhere behind it. As it came to the surface the grey shadow which turned out to be a black tip reef shark smashed my king george down for lunch and creayed a water spray which covered me and took my light line of 15 pound for a quick spin before the hook gave way.
Five mins later after being totally stunned, the old mans heavy rod went off peeling drag only to hear the words for F*** sake and it was gone. Old man put his rod down n while fixing another set up shouts F*** your rod boy. My (shimano torium 30 loaded with 50lb ) was peeling line off like no tomorow. I quickly wound up my light gear and the fight was on.
After 15 mins of battling and 3 solid runs a nice 4 ft Black tip reef shark hit the surface and after a quick dispatch and onto the ice, me an the old boy set up the rods again to fish. After a few more drops resulting in some nice whiting and Kg, my torium took another U shaped look and the line was screaming off again. Just as the southwest wind was starting to really kick up, after another solid 10-15 min battle and getting her to the boat 2 -3 times (realising it was another black tip reef shark,) before absolutely smashing me and making another run for the bottom. 2 grey shadows appear out of nowhere following the shark to the surface and shooting back into the depths (both black tip reef sharks) and on the sounder they were everywhere definately a spot marked in the gps).
The old man gaffed it and we quickly dispatched it and put it on ice. After this the south wester was howling so we decided to call it a day. Here is the result. I have to say for the size of these fish they are incredibly powerful in and out of the water. And some of it was eaten fresh for dinner tonight with fresh garden salad and homemade potato wedges and it was bloody beautiful.
Hope my story didnt bore the brain cheers guys . Back to uni tomorow , but all worth the fun and stress relief.

New to fishwrecked
Submitted by Little_Richo on Mon, 2011-03-14 21:30Hey everyone just saying a hello as I'm new to fish wrecked. I've lived in Perth all my life and love fishing but have never really fished Perth. I do like to get away for a few holidays a year to places like Kalbarri and Walpole but I'm looking to start fishing more locally and thought I'd start by joining up. Unfortunately I don't have a boat (yet...) but any fishing is good fishing.
