trolling brackets out of rod holders
Submitted by spoon on Mon, 2011-03-07 07:29ages ago I saw a picture in a fishing mag of a trolling bracket (custome made) that came out of a rod holder and went away from the boat at 90 degrees.
I think for memory ryan did an article on the abroholos islands and there was a picture when they were trolling from a charter boat. it may have even been whiteys boat.
can anyone help us with out with that photo or got any ideas, i dont want to put out riggers on the boat and want to widen the spread a bit

Dean Butler in Exxy.
Submitted by Lastchance on Sun, 2011-03-06 23:08Just read the article by Dean Butler in the latest Bluewater mag discussing his results from 30 odd days billfishing off Exmouth.
Here is an excerpt from the article.
"....As the gig unfolded, we also took the opportunity to claim a few Australian records, as we found plenty on offer. That seemed ok, but apparently we committed the cardinal sin when we wacked the first fish we caught, a small Black, for belly flaps, because we were struggling to find suitable bait. Even worse, we killed sailfish for the same reason.......When you criticise someone for killing a billfish, you're riding the slippery slide of the team that wants to stop fishing altogether......."
He has obviously copped a fair hammering since the trip as he didnt give a report on the fishing at all, just the justification for his/their actions.
Billfish for bait?
Oh dear......

A cycle and fishing trip around Australia
Submitted by worldfisher on Sun, 2011-03-06 19:52Hi Everyone,
I've just joined fishwrecked and what a pleasure it is to be here! I'm originally South African but have spent most of my life living in UK. I've spent the last week reading through the site and it looks like you guys are spoilt for choice when it come to fishing!
My Plan now is to come to Australia to cycle around the country, fishing and working as I go. I would love to meet fellow fishing nuts along the way so if any of you guys have some spare time please please get in touch. Any advice would be also really appreciated as i see I have lots to learn.
My rough plan is to fly into Perth and start cycling north towards Exmouth looking for work as I go. After some months on the west coast I will push up north towards Darwin and maybe eventually make it down on the east coast and round to the south. I would like to try and cycle a loop around Australia depending on whether i have enough time available.
For the last few years i have been travelling and fishing around the world. I've spent lots of time in India fishing for Barramundi and Mahseer, as well as cycling from Uk to India, passing through Central Asia and Tibet. A couple of years ago a friend and i kayaked from Mumbai to Goa (650km) fishing along the way..took us 45 days and was a real blast and learning experience.
I love landbased fishing and hope I can endulge as much as possible around your coasts. Hopefully i will be able to land my first ever Australian Barramundi!
After I leave Australia I have a big trip planned which is to cycle Norway to Capetown with the aim to catch a fish in every country along the way. Its a big ask but i have been thinking it over for a while now, so if i can get the money together I reckon I will go for it.
Well its great to be here and I really hope to meet some of you guys in the coming months. Until then if anyone is interested in a read of my blog is at www.worldbiker.blogspot.com . Also if anyone ever finds themselves in India and needs advice about fishing just give me a shout!
A few photos of previous fishing, I hope you enjoy, All the best, Scott

Bonito?
Submitted by beau on Sun, 2011-03-06 19:34Anyone had any luck with the Bonito landabsed this year? When is the best time of year for them? My dad used to catch quite a few off the ASI rocks but we havent fished there since they blocked it off to cars.
swan river sesh
Submitted by aussie_breamer on Sun, 2011-03-06 18:47Me and my mate Aidan, went for a flick in the swan 2day to explore some new ground, at the first spot, using only 3 and 4lb leaders, we got busted off about 6 times by big fish. I ended up landing 11 flatties, biggest going about 48-50cm, and aidan only landing 3 flaties due to pulling the hooks on nearly every fish he hooked!!! lol. I also lost my fairshare of hookups.
on one of my retrieves, 4-5 sambos followed in my SP, but no hook up, they were about 70-80cm each. I flicked out my Sp again and retreived it really fast and it got hammerd by on of the sambos, had him on for about 10 seconds, peeling line of my Ci4 only to bust me off in the rocks.
then moved location and had a flick with some HBs, on about my fith cast, I hooked into a decent bream which gave me a bit of a fight. It went about 33-35cm - not to bad.
Unfortunately though, whilst removing the hook, the big fella was flapping arround in my hand, causing one of the sets of trebles to get imbeded into my finger!!
with the one treble in me, and the other in the bream, Aidan got the hook out of the fish whist being the clumbsy person he is, getting the hook deeper in me!!
any way, released the fish and couldn't get it out of me, so had to leave to get it removed.
brand new lure, so the barbs weren't crushed.
not many pictures.
cheers,
tom

Good knots for light lines
Submitted by Captain Grumpy on Sun, 2011-03-06 14:27Can the GT knot be used in light braid? i have finally learnt how to tie it and am very impressed with the way it travels through the guides with heaver line and leaders.
For light river fishing i use a back to back uni, but it makes me cringe every time it goes through guides.
I can tie a bimni in braid larger than 20lb no probs but find it difficult in braid lighter than that. is 70-80 turns too much in 3-5kg braid?
Any suggestions on knots that go through guides better than the uni?

Just getting started using live baits.
Have started by attaching a 5/0 or 6/0 circle to the livey using the bridle method, rubber bands and a live bait needle.
What's the best way to attach it to a snapper sinker so it lets go from the sinker when hit?.

Sounds like the chicken run claimed some ribs yesterday
Submitted by allrounder on Sun, 2011-03-06 06:40Just read that a boat was hit yesterday at "The run".Hope it is nothing to serious but a lesson to be learnt either way.Reading about the chicken run on the internet is a lot different than trolling it.Over the years i have fished it many times with a few very experienced skippers and i still approach it with real caution.Sounds like they escaped with a few cracked ribs and a dented pride.Be warned it will kick your ass if you stuff up.

Last Sunday trolling the FADs
Submitted by crushed on Sat, 2011-03-05 21:02Well it's been nearly a week but I finally got the photo's downloaded and resized so here are a couple. I will try to put up a video or two as well a bit later.
Went out last week on Shikari Charters with a mate who often decky's for Al Bevan the skipper.
Left Challenger Harbour at 0400 and did a bit of bottom bashing in about 30m of water, one under sized pinkie came aboard and then another nice sized one about 750mm/8kg or so. Then just as the sun was coming up I was bringing my line in as quick as possible to rebait for one last drop, when my line started going twice as fast in the opposite direction. The fish went for a couple of short powerful runs and then I made a beginners mistake and cranked a bit more drag on. Yep the rod loaded up a bit more but whatever was on the other end barely noticed it and then BANG the unknown creature and I parted company. Me losing 50 - 100 M of braid in the process. The decky lost another good fish not long after and then the sun was well up so it was time to go trolling out by the FADs.
We started the actual trolling about 0730 and went for quite a while with no action at all. But I can think of much worse ways to spend a sunday morning than sitting back with a cold one watching for something to rush into the spread. Eventually we spotted some birds working a bait ball of in the distance and made a b line for it. As we made our way around it the lines went off one after the other, three in total. After some ducking and weaving by the three lucky anglers and careful manouvuring by the skipper it was the decky's turn to shine bringing all three YFT's aboard with a minimum of fuss. Fish dispatched and lines out we were of again, one more hooked up not long after and Graham another angler onboard started throwing the haymakers (Halco not roundhouses haha).
A total of five Yellow Fin Tuna in total and Graham's first time on popper and all were 20 - 25 kg.
Will try to put some video up later, but missed the airborne hookup unfortunately.

Spooling up your reel...
Submitted by PattyT on Sat, 2011-03-05 17:39Hi again guys,
Well... I just cashed a years worth of poo change saving and got myself a Saltiga S-Extreme 6500z. I've got some 85pd braid to load onto it and I was wondering if you guys would recommend getting it put on in a tackle shop or just doing it DIY like I have always done without issue in the past. I havnt really had alot of experience in this line class or with some of the fish I hope to tackle (GT's, Black Jew, Big Spaniads etc.) so im not sure if something could stuff up if I put the line on myself..
Any advice/suggestions would be great.

Whats your favourite type of Fishing?
Submitted by troy fuller on Sat, 2011-03-05 17:24Out of all the fishing I've done, the most enjoyable fishing would probably hard body fishing, i went out yesterday with a mate did some sp jigging and trolling but the most fun we had that day is when we stopped by carnack(probably spelt wrong) and we seen some baitfish getting smashed by something, so we pulled out the tiny bream rods and casted some lures at the baitfish, cant beat the fight on a 2ld rod haha got some nice tailor and herring on the hardbodies
cast after cast, cant get better than that, mate enjoyed it as well as he is from england he hasn't done much fishing, now he is hooked ^^
Whats your favourite type of fishing?

The Fishing Cart!
Submitted by DieHard on Sat, 2011-03-05 16:48Hey all
with the talk on here about fishing carts and bulk rubbish in the suburb,, i decided to make one!
found the perfect buggy frame, perfect for what i was looking for!
found 2 16inch bikes and took off the front wheels. removed the buggy wheels and put the bike wheels on after adjusting the axel slightly, perfect fit!!
one crate for the 22L esky and another crate with the reels (in a tub), burley,rodholders,lights.... on top goes the gaff and 2 rod tubes...
then x2 elastic straps to support the 2 crates and x1 strap to go over the esky and secure it nice and neat.
and if i need another crate i have made a support beam that will let me have another crate!
took around 4 days to make and put all the gear together...its pretty heavy but is the easiest thing to push on the beach even up sand dunes for a bit of limit test and it worked great!
and the great thing is it carries everything i need from; whiting, herring, tailor, skippy, bream to sharks, stingrays, mulloway, pinkys and much more!
Cheers all
PS. all the gear packs nicely into the cupboard after cleaning and the buggy folds down into the shed after rinsing.
and the burley bucket is home made

recommendations/oppinions asked on different overhead reels for deep Saltwater deep bottom fishing with braid lines.
Submitted by glastronomic on Sat, 2011-03-05 15:05Had the opportunity to have a fish with a nice Daiwa braid loaded lever action overhead reel.
I was "warned" by the owner that I would want one, and,.. he is correct.
Likesd it very much.
Cannot remember the type of Daiwa reel, but something similar or the same is high on the list
Looked this morning at the Shimano Tyrnos 30 and liked it.
Did not find a shop with Daiwa reels (recommendations where to go?)
And open to other lever action overhead reels.
Appreciate the help.

Out of all the W.A fishing sites i checked out, this one continues to have quality input and i have learn't alot from all
the member's that post regular reports and advise.
I fish mostly Perth metro, land, small boat, river and some fresh water fly down south.
